Just a day after releasing the stable build of Android 14, the wheel keeps turning and now we have beta 2 for the first quarterly platform update for Android 14. The update is available for the Pixel 5a and newer.
According to Google, there are a few issues that were fixed in this new beta, which includes an issue that sometimes caused the Settings app to crash when a user accessed system Bluetooth Settings after pairing a device. They also fixed an issue on some devices where the scrolling animation sometimes stuttered or paused. And finally, fixed various issues that were impacting system stability and performance.
There are some known issues still in this beta, which includes not being able to connect to cellular service after swapping SIM cards. And the battery level in the status bar sometimes shows 0% temporarily.
This is running on the October 2023 security patch, so it is patching the latest security exploits, which is good to see.
What’s new in Android 14 QPR1?
This quarterly platform release is going to be the new Pixel Feature Drop, which if Google keeps to 3 months between updates, that should launch in January. Though the September Pixel Feature Drop was delayed a month, and just landed yesterday. So it was scheduled for December. But as we learned today, Google is not pushing out updates on a specific date anymore, instead pushing them out when they are ready.
In this update, there’s not a lot of new things here so far. Though one of the big changes comes to the Pixel Fold. Which will now allow you to force apps to open in full screen, and other aspect ratios. Meaning that Instagram can now open in full screen. Google also added a battery cycle count to the About screen – similar to what Apple has done with the iPhone 15.
