At its ‘Scary Fast’ event on Monday night, Apple decided to launch quite a few new Macs to finish off the year. This includes a new MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch, with the new M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chipsets. They feature some big GPU gains of course, and some smaller but still noticeable CPU gains.
But the big news out of this event is actually the new color for the MacBook Pro. Apple has finally brought back its matte black color for the MacBook. Something we have not seen since the MacBook in 2006. This is still an aluminum laptop, and Apple is calling it “Space Black”, they are also saying that it will be better about fighting the fingerprints, which we’ll have to wait and see on that.
Inside the new MacBook Pro’s are the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chipsets. Apple has, for the first time, brought the base-level M3 chipset to the new MacBook Pro 14. Previously, Apple kept around the MacBook Pro 13 with the older design and touchbar, for the base-level chip. It’s good to see that is gone, completely now. The 16-inch model comes in M3 Pro and M3 Max only. They both also ship with up to 128GB of RAM inside.
3nm across Apple’s Fall 2023 lineup
Just as the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max launched with the 3nm A17 Pro, so is the new Macs from Apple. These are all 3nm chipsets with the M3 moniker. That’s actually a fairly big leap for Apple Silicon here. These are also all capable of hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing, and that’s going to be huge for gaming on Mac. Something that Apple has really started to talk more about recently.
The design for these MacBook Pros are the same as previously, the biggest change here is the brightness of these Mini LED displays. They are now about 20% brighter. Now sitting at 600 nits of peak brightness for SDR content, and up to 1,600 nits for peak brightness which is unchanged. The typical brightness for HDR is going to be around 1,000 nits, which is rare for a laptop.
Apple’s new MacBook Pro’s are available for pre-order right now, and will start shipping next Tuesday, November 7, 2023. The M3 Max models are delayed a couple of weeks, with shipping times starting on November 21.
