This year, we’ve seen artificial intelligence get added to virtually everything. And it seems like some companies aren’t finished yet. TikTok user @robdad_ posted a clip on the site with the caption, “I just randomly discovered Spotify’s ChatGPT?” The clip shows the feature available as an option under Your Library, and after tapping the plus sign to create a new playlist, a few prompts appear.

The test shows that you can ask for anything, with a disclaimer at the bottom saying “Powered by AI”.

Spotify has confirmed to TechCrunch that they are working on this feature. It’s currently available in a small test. It’s unclear if Spotify will roll this out to everyone or when that might happen. Spotify is likely feeding it to a small group of users to see the feedback and how well it works. Google does this quite often with updates to its apps. And Spotify also routinely runs tests on different features to see how their users will react and if it improves the experience.

Spotify already uses AI for its DJ feature

Spotify is already using artificial intelligence for its DJ feature, which basically acts like your own personal DJ. It does use Xavier Jernigan as a host from time to time in the DJ. Jernigan was part of Spotify’s popular “Get Up” show that aired every day on the service. It acted as a morning show, giving you news and talking about topics mixed in with some of your favorite shows.

AI DJ uses Generative AI from Open AI (the creators of ChatGPT). This is put in the hands of its music editors to help provide you with insightful facts about the music, artists, or genres that you’re listening to. And it uses Spotify’s very popular and very good personalization technology. So you’re getting a lineup of music recommendations based on what they know you like.

Using AI to create different playlists could be a very interesting feature. However, it could be limited at first, based on how well it tests. If it succeeds, you can bet that Apple Music, YouTube Music, and others will add it too.
