Of all the countries whose citizens use ChatGPT, Italy seems to be the most cautious. Notably last year, the Italian government banned ChatGPT from being used in the country. However, about a month later, the government reinstated the ChatGPT. Well, it seems that the drama isn’t over, as Italy says that ChatGPT actually breaches the country’s data-protecting rules.
OpenAI has never really been on Italy’s good side. The country expressed great concern over the privacy of its citizens. This is valid, as in order to train ChatGPT, OpenAI has to feed it tons of data from around the internet. This has gotten OpenAI into some legal battles over the past year. One of the most recent courtroom specs dealt with the Wall Street Journal looking to sue open AI over copyright.
Italy says that ChatGPT breaks data protection rules
Back when ChatGPT was reinstated in the country, Italy’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPA) launched a fact-finding activity. This continues to look into the company for any potential data privacy risks. Well, it appears that it found something, as Italy says that ChatGPT violated its data protection rules. However, the GDPA did not specify which rules were broken, at least not publicly. What we do know is that open AI has 30 days to respond and address the issues.
ChatGPT is under the watchful eye of the EU government. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) actually set up a dedicated task force charged with looking into OpenAI and ChatGPT.
ChatGPT was able to satisfy the Italian government last year, however, it does want to push things way further. For example, it wants OpenAI to implement age restrictions on people who use it along with giving users the ability to opt out from letting the company use their data.
These are all steps that the country wants to take to make sure that its users are protected. Data privacy is one of the main concerns in our modern AI-driven World.
