Privacy and security are some of the biggest topics that are brought up talking about artificial intelligence. So far, there has been a lot to worry about in those respects. However, there is some good news, as multi-factor authentication has landed on ChatGPT.
If you don’t know what multi-factor identification is, it’s a useful tool. When you sign in to one of your accounts, you would typically use your email and password, and that’s it. However, multi-factor authentication adds another layer of security. Once you enter your email and password, you’d then have to enter an additional code that only you can access. This code is generated through an authenticator app that generates a six-digit code. You’ll then be able to log into your account. It’s not a surefire way of staving off account hacks, but it will definitely make your account much more secure.
ChatGPT is bringing multi-factor authentication
At any given moment, there’s always some person out there trying to gain access to your accounts. Once they do, there’s no telling what sort of harm they can do. Because of this, multi-factor authentication is crucial. According to an OpenAI official blog post, multi-factor authentication is now available for ChatGPT. This feature can be accessed in your ChatGPT Settings. When you activate this feature, you will need to use an authenticator app or another means of authentication in order to log into your account.
How to activate multi-factor authentication
Doing so is very easy. First and foremost, go to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and download an authenticator app. A good recommendation is the Google Authenticator app.
After that, go to the ChatGPT website and click on your profile picture at the bottom left corner of the screen. Open the setting, and you will see the Multi-factor authentication section right under the Theme section. Click on the Enable button, and you will be taken to a page where you’ll scan a QR code.
When you do that, your phone will take you to your authenticator app. It will ask you if you want to add ChatGPT to your list of accounts. Confirm that you want to add it, and you will see the account pop up on the app’s home screen.
However, in our testing, it didn’t work that way for us. Instead, we had to add the account by pressing the “+” button in the Google Authenticator app and scanning the QR code from there. So, you may have to do that.
You will then see a six-digit code generated in the authenticator app. Type that code into the text field on the QR code page on your computer. The code resets about every 20 seconds, so, be sure to add the most current code. After that, the last step would be to copy the recovery code that OpenAI gives you. Copy it and store it in a secure spot. You will use this code just in case you can’t access your recovery authenticator app, and have to log in.
