Bing AI vs Google Bard: Which should you use?

The fight is on! Microsoft and Google, two of the biggest tech companies in the world, released their own AI-powered chatbots in the hopes of leading this new frontier. Microsoft’s chatbot is called Bing AI and Google’s is called Bard.

Both chatbots are powerful, and they’re backed up by massive language models. However, which one is better? Which one of these chatbots is more deserving of your time? That’s what we’re here to establish. Here is a comparison between Microsoft Bing AI and Google Bard.

Bing AI vs. Google Bard: Speed

When it comes to speed, Google Bard is definitely the winner. Bing AI is faster than ChatGPT, but you still see the bot typing out its responses. It takes a while to type out longer content, and it also takes a second to start typing it out.

It will take longer depending on whether it needs to perform a Bing search. It will do that from time to time depending on what you type in. That slows it down even more. However, it’s not unbearable.

In the case of Bard, it’s much quicker. For starters, instead of seeing it type out all of the words, the entire response will appear all at once. Also, it delivers the response quicker. When generating a story, it took Bard between five and six seconds, whereas Bing AI took over a minute to finish it.

Bing AI vs. Google Bard: Conversation

One aspect of conversational AI is the ability to be, well, conversational. You can have full conversations with these chatbots as though they were human beings. When it comes to emulating a human conversation, Bing AI is definitely better in that regard.

When Google detects that you’re trying to spark up a casual conversation, it’d quickly try to shut down the conversation and move onto the next topic. It wouldn’t inquire further about what you’re talking about.

Out of the box, Bing AI is almost the same way, but it actually has three different conversation modes. By default, it’s not all that conversational, but you can set the conversation mode to “Creative”. In this mode, it will constantly continue the conversation with questions about the topic at hand. Its responses could sound a bit clinical, but it’s definitely better at keeping the conversation going.

Bing AI vs. Google Bard: Information

Neither of these chatbots does exceptionally well when it comes to conversations, but that’s not what they’re meant for. These chatbots are meant to be reliable hubs for gathering information. Both Bing AI and Google Bard are powered by powerful search engines, so you literally have the internet at your fingertips when you’re using them.

When it comes to information, both chatbots offer you with a ton of information about the prompt. Not only that, but both also show you the sources it obtains the information from.

While this is true, Bard seems to put more effort into its responses. Bing AI’s responses are pretty fleshed-out, but Bard just goes above and beyond. It offers additional tips and context on whatever you search.

If you ask it for a recipe for tacos, it’ll give it to you and list additional tips and recommendations. If you ask it a science question, it will answer it and provide additional information about the people responsible for that field. The list goes on. Bard just gives you a more robust experience when reeling in information.

Bing AI vs. Google Bard: Advice

When it comes to providing advice on different subjects, Bard and Bing AI are both similar and different. Both chatbots give you a bulleted list of items that you should do or keep in mind. Bing AI does a better job of providing the links to the source material. This is a win for Microsoft because you could better fact-check the information you’re being given.

As for the content, Bing AI is more straightforward. It will deliver your list of items without much fanfare. As for Bard, it would give you a long paragraph explaining a bit about the subject at hand before giving you the list. Also, Bard will often give you additional tips and things to keep in mind after the list.

Bing is better at seizing the opportunity to sell products. If the subject involves an item that you can find on the internet, you’ll see a box with that item and where you can buy it. When asked how to swaddle a baby, it gave a bunch of shopping links for baby blankets.

So, Bing is more to-the-point with its responses, and Bard gives more fleshed-out responses.

Bing AI vs. Google Bard: Written content

When it comes to written content, both Bing AI and Google Bard are about neck and neck. Full disclosure, neither of these chatbots is on the level of ChatGPT when it comes to written content. As said before, they’re search engines first and foremost, so that’s where most of their power lies.

These two chatbots do a respectable job, regardless. You’re able to produce code, short scripts, short stories, essays, poems, articles, and other forms of content. Bard struggles with writing eulogies whereas Bing can produce something resembling one (but it’s not great). Other than that, both bots are pretty even.

Which should you use?

So, which chatbot deserves your attention? It’s pretty hard to say because both chatbots have similar benefits and drawbacks. Bard tends to give you more fleshed-out responses that give you additional context. Bing AI is more straightforward, but it’s a lot better at telling you the sources it got its information from and providing links for you to click on.

Neither chatbot is completely accurate with its facts, so you run the risk of getting wrong information, either way, you slice it. Also, neither is great when it comes to emulating a conversation, but Bing AI takes the cake in that regard.

Both chatbots are pretty closely matched, so it might come down to personal preference at the end of the day.
