Ever since its inception late last year, generative AI has slowly but surely been penetrating every aspect of our lives, be it education, entertainment, video editing, or even filmmaking. Now, in line with these efforts, Wayfair, the popular online furniture and home decor retailer, has introduced a new generative AI called Decorify, which acts as a “virtual room restyler,” aiding users in redesigning their living spaces.
How is Decorify different from Augmented Reality?
While similar in essence to other AR apps that superimpose existing furniture into a user’s space, Decorify first asks the user to upload a photo of the room they wish to redesign. After the upload, the AI presents users with an extensive array of visual styles, ranging from well-defined themes like “mid-century modern” or “farmhouse” to more eclectic options like “bohemian” or “perfectly pink.” And after selecting the desired style, Decorify uses its generative AI to recreate the room.
Furthermore, users can also browse through Wayfair’s vast product catalog and add new furniture to their redesigned rooms. However, it is important to note that the exact AI model that Wayfair is using is still unclear.
“Combining the visual discovery and inspiration with shoppable products from an extensive catalog that covers everything home, Decorify has the potential to drive significant value for Wayfair customers,” said Shrenik Sadalgi, Wayfair’s R&D director.
Early days
Although Decorify represents a significant development in the realm of home decor, it is not without its limitations. Presently, the AI is limited to decorating living rooms, and some users have reported odd reflections in curtains or unexpected placement of plants. Furthermore, Decorify is prone to misjudging the rooms’ dimensions, resulting in inaccuracies in the virtual representation.
Nevertheless, Wayfair remains committed to addressing these limitations and aims to enhance the AI model by incorporating “proprietary branding data.” This would not only provide the company with more accurate “1:1 matches” within the generated designs but also help consumers align the decor perfectly with their new room.
