Now, whether you’re an iPhone user or an Android User, don’t grab your torches pitchforks Just Yet. It doesn’t seem like either one of the platforms is to blame. There’s a chance that this could be a carrier issue.

Several people commented about this on Reddit. It seems that this feature is affecting iPhone and Android users communicating through AT&T. When a message is sent from an Android phone, the iPhone user receives the message, but the Android user’s phone number we’ll have an additional digit at the beginning. It will have the “+” symbol at the beginning, making the iPhone think that the message came from an international number.
This means that this message will be sent to its own thread rather than the main one. When the iPhone user tries to respond to the message, they will get an error message saying that it is an invalid number. However, the Android User will still receive that message. When the Android user gets the message, their phone will say that it’s from an invalid number.
The reports coming in thus far have been from AT&T users, but we’re not sure if it’s only AT&T. For all we know, this could be affecting other carriers as well. Specifically, this seems to occur when the Android user is running AT&T. The iPhone user can have any carrier.
So, the issue could be that AT&T is adding on the extra digit when sending from an Android phone to an iPhone. At the moment, AT&T has not commented on this issue.
