Recently, we’ve been covering news surrounding a possible second and more affordable version of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. While this is all early information, we’ve been getting hints from multiple sources that this could be a possibility. Just recently, according to Winfuture, a mysterious Galaxy Z Fold phone with the code name Q6A appeared.
The Galaxy Z foldables phones are some of the most expensive foldables on the market, reaching close to the $2,000 Mark. While that’s the case, most notebook-style foldables are very expensive. The cheapest notebook foldable to ever hit the market is the Tecno Phantom V Fold, which comes in at roughly $1,100 when converted to USD.
So, with Samsung’s Z Fold foldables so high in price, the company wants to make the form factor more accessible.
A mysterious Galaxy Z Fold phone code-named Q6A appears
We are half a year away from the unveiling of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. As such, we need to be sure to take this news with a grain of salt. Anything could happen between now and the unveiling, and who knows if this potential project could be canceled?
Rumors have been coming out that Samsung has been wanting to make a more affordable Galaxy Z Fold phone. If it’s an affordable Foldable phone, we’re pretty sure that Samsung would put it in the FE series of phones (Maybe a Galaxy Z Fold 5 FE). Previous reports have come out saying that Samsung is considering this.
Now, thanks to a fresh new leak, we have what appears to be a bit of concrete evidence. Reports state that the code name for a mysterious Galaxy Z foldable was discovered. Last year, the Galaxy Fold 5 (Review) and Z Flip 5 used the code names Q5 (for the Fold) and B5 (for the Flip). This year, the code names are going to be Q6 and B6.
Well, a mysterious code name was found at Samsung. This Galaxy Z foldable has a code name Q6A. Obviously, this is not a direct indication of a cheaper device. However, this, coupled with the previous rumors, all point in that direction.
Launching a more affordable Z Fold phone could be a bit tricky
If Samsung does launch a more affordable Galaxy Z Fold 6, pricing it could be a bit tricky. Phones like the OnePlus Open (Review) offer the latest and greatest specs, and it’s priced at a lower price point than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, we’re certain that this mysterious device won’t have the greatest specs. So, if the price of a watered-down Galaxy Z Fold phone is too similar to a fully specced-out OnePlus phone, that’ll look pretty bad on Samsung.
So, Samsung will really have to focus on making this an affordable device. However, making it too affordable could potentially eat into the Z Flip sales. Galaxy Z Flip phones have been priced at $999 for a bit. Launching a Fold at a price too close to that could possibly cannibalize the Z Flip phones. So, if Samsung does launch this cheaper Galaxy Fold, then it will have to hit a sweet spot to make it appealing to buyers without cannibalizing any of its own products.
