Today, during the Wonderlust event, Apple unveiled the new iPhone 15 series. After many, many leaks and rumors over the past year, it’s now official. The iPhone 15 comes with USB-C across all four models – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. There’s also no “Ultra” model as some had speculated.

Let’s go over what Apple has done with the new iPhones this year. It’s actually turned into a pretty decent upgrade. Starting with the vanilla iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. So what’s new here? Well, a few things. Primarily the Dynamic Island, the A16 Bionic and USB-C.

Dynamic Island is now available across the entire iPhone 15 lineup. It’s a pretty nifty feature, though not something that you’d upgrade specifically for, unless you really hate the notch. The Dynamic Island is pretty cool as it acts as a sort of timer at the top of your screen, and makes it easier to jump to different apps.

Then there’s the ‘new’ Apple A16 Bionic chipset. Eagle-eyed readers would notice that this is actually the same processor as the iPhone 14 Pro had last year. So it’s an older chipset, but still pretty good. The iPhone 15 Pro will get the A17 Bionic. There’s also USB-C here, and as expected, the vanilla models are getting slower transfer speeds. Though this only matters if you transfer files via a cable often. Which you probably don’t.

iPhone 15 Pro series gets the biggest update in years

While it might not seem like it, the iPhone 15 Pro series is actually getting a rather large update, and arguably the largest update since the move to iPhone X. So what’s new here? Well, the Pro series is getting a new chipset in the A17 Pro, which is a 3nm chipset. That’s the first 3nm chip for Apple, and that should be a lot more power efficient. Allowing for better battery life and better performance.

Like the other iPhone 15 models, it is also getting USB-C. So now you’ll be able to use the same cable to charge your MacBook Pro, iPad Air and now iPhone 15. It is getting USB3 speeds, that will give you up to 10Gbps transfer speeds.

The other big changes are on the cameras. Both models are getting upgraded ultrawide and telephoto cameras. However, the iPhone 15 Pro Max is getting a periscope telephoto lens, which will allow for up to 5x optical zoom.

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max is also getting a new button on the side, replacing the Mute Switch. Apple is calling it the Action Button, similar to the Apple Watch Ultra. Press and hold the button and you can easily mute or unmute your phone. There’s a set of actions available for the flashlight, voice memos and more.

Finally, the biggest change here is, titanium. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are both made of Grade 5 Titanium this year. Which makes it more durable and lighter at the same time. Apple is also using a PVD coating on the Pro’s to help with the colors looking amazing. That includes Black Titanium, White Titanium, Blue Titanium and Natural Titanium. The new structural frame makes it more repairable than ever. And the substructure is made from 100% recycled aluminum.

When will iPhone 15 be available for purchase?

As usual, Apple announced that pre-orders open this Friday, September 15, 2023. And devices will be shipping on September 22, a week later. This has been the schedule every year for Apple, even when the iPhone is delayed. So no real surprises here.

How about the pricing? Well the iPhone 15 isn’t really getting a price increase in the US. As the iPhone 15 will start at $799, iPhone 15 Plus at $899 and iPhone 15 Pro at $999. The only jumping in price is the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is now starting at $1,199. They start with 128GB of storage, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max starting at 256GB. Making it a bit less of an issue with the price increase.
