Apple wants no part of the NFL Sunday Ticket Antitrust Lawsuit

The NFL is currently embroiled in an antitrust lawsuit for NFL Sunday Ticket, mostly because of the price and limitations. The plaintiffs in the case believe that Apple has information relevant to their lawsuit, and has even served Apple with a subpeona to turn over information on the case. But Apple won’t be doing that, it won’t be complying with the subpeona unless that judge orders them to.

Why is Apple not complying with the subpeona? Well the tech giant believes that the information being sought out is “irrelevant”, and the testimony that is being required by an Apple senior executive, Eddy Cue would be “unduly burdensome”.

The judge has not yet ruled on the subpeona request from Apple, but the company should feel relieved that they did not actually land NFL Sunday Ticket. Even though Apple was in deep negotiations for it earlier this year, it ultimately landed with Google on YouTube and YouTube TV. Google has also resisted all attempts to compel more information regarding its discussions with the NFL over Sunday Ticket. So Google is not free and clear yet here in this lawsuit.

What is this antitrust lawsuit?

So why is the NFL being sued? Well, it’s quite simple. It’s a class-action lawsuit that alleges the NFL is violating antitrust laws by limiting th enumber of games available outside of the NFL Sunday Ticket package. Forcing fans to subscribe to NFL Sunday Ticket if they want to watch the games. While also raising the pricing of NFL Sunday Ticket at the same time. In the current season, those without YouTube TV would need to pay $449 for the entire season. And that’s for out-of-market games only.

The NFL Sunday Ticket was always a bit strange, since you could only watch out-of-market games, and you could not watch your local games nor primetime games. It’ll be interesting to see if this lawsuit forces any changes for this package from the NFL.
