In his latest Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the iOS 18 redesign will indeed happen. The reliable analyst also revealed details about the next macOS version. The next-generation software is expected to be revealed at Apple’s annual WWDC event in June. Previously, a sketchy rumor claimed that the iOS 18’s revamped design could be inspired by visionOS.

Apple indeed working on iOS 18 redesign per a reliable analyst

In his newsletter, Gurman says that Apple is working on updating the design of the iOS as early as this year. However, it will not be entirely revamped and similar to the visionOS that powers Apple’s mixed-reality headset. Still, the analyst agrees that the company could take some design cues from the Vision Pro’s software.

The sketchy rumor also revealed that Apple may borrow visual design elements from the visionOS and incorporate them into iOS. visionOS has rounded app icons, shadows, depth, 3D buttons, and translucent elements. A revamped iOS 18 mirroring the visionOS may not be the case because the latter is unique to a platform that focusses on passthrough video. Additionally, the windows are always floating and overlapping a complex background. Hence, the concept may not apply to iOS.

Apple has not significantly refreshed the design of iOS in years. The latest development from Gurman comes after he had previously stated that iOS 18 will be the biggest and the most ambitious update. It will also be packed with generative AI features.

macOS also said to get a revamp

Alongside this year’s iOS 18, Gurman also reveals that Apple has started early work on the next operating system for Mac. The latest version is macOS 14 Sonoma released last year. The analyst says that the next-generation software with changes could be released in 2025 or 2026. The Cupertino-based tech giant last refreshed the macOS with a major redesign in 2020 with Big Sur.
