The latest iOS 16 update actually fixes a rather major security problem on iPhones. The update in question is iOS 16.6.1, and at first glance, it may seem unimportant. It brings a ton of bug fixes, but nothing major. Well, looks can be deceiving.
iOS 16 had a major security problem that has been fixed in the latest update
This update fixes a zero-day bug in iOS 16, a major one. That bug allowed for remote installs of spyware without any interaction from the iPhone owner. Citizen Lab, a spyware research group, notified Apple of this last week, and the company reacted fast.
NGO Group’s Pegasus spyware was installable thanks to this bug. That happened to an employee of a Washington DC-based civil society organization, actually.
Many of you are probably wondering what is Pegasus spyware. That spyware basically infects your phone and sends back data to the attacker. Any data really, ranging from photos and messages to video and so on.
Pegasus spyware takes advantage of PassKit
The exploit takes advantage of PassKit, which is a framework behind Apple Pay and Wallet. Malicious images seem to be spreading the malware, images that arrive via iMessage. Citizen Lab did not share a full breakdown for security reasons.
Even if you’re not a target for such spyware, at least not an obvious one, installing this update as soon as possible is a good idea. This bug has been around for quite some time, and it wasn’t spotted until recently.
It didn’t take Apple long to react, which is good to see, of course. Speaking of updates, we’re slowly getting ready for iOS 17. Apple will soon announce its new iPhones, and along with them comes iOS 17.
The event has been scheduled for September 12, which is next week. The iPhone 15 series is coming, so get ready if you’re interested in getting any of them.
