How to stream Android apps to your Chromebook

0
[ad_1]

ChromeOS is fast becoming a more powerful platform. It’s no longer the bloated Google Chrome browser it used to be. It’s grown up, and its latest feature lets you stream apps from your Android phone. Here’s how to stream your apps to your Chromebook.

A feature like this can really come in handy, especially in our connected world. If you’re hard at work, you’d want to avoid having to constantly pick up your phone just to check your notifications and check your messages. It breaks up your workflow and causes an unnecessary distraction. It gets worse when we need to constantly access our phones for our work.

This is where streaming your apps comes in

So, what is this feature? Well, imagine if you could take your entire phone and just plug it into ChromeOS. App streaming isn’t quite that, but it’s pretty close.

This feature allows you to run full apps from your phone directly on your Chromebook. You’re running it directly from your phone, so you don’t need to install that app to your Chromebook or start the app from scratch. If you were using the app on your phone, you can pick up right from where you left off.

App streaming gives you most of the capabilities of the apps you use. There are apps that you can’t use, as they’re blocked by your Chromebook. There are other apps that require you to use pieces of your phone’s hardware. So, don’t expect to make posts using Snapchat.

Other than that, you’re free to use these apps. You can also jump from the first app you’re using to other apps as you need. Say, you open a link in Twitter, and you select to open the link in Chrome. Well, it will open Chrome as well.

When you open an app using the app streaming feature, it will also open on your phone. So, it’s actually open on your phone’s RAM, and it will behave as such. However, when you bring the app to the forefront on your phone, it will stop streaming to your Chromebook. This means that you’re able to pick up right where you left off when switching devices.

How to stream apps to your Chromebook

So, if this sounds interesting to you, then you’d want to give it a shot. Well, there’s good news and bad news. The bad news is that, as of the time of writing this article (July 2023), the list of compatible devices is pretty limited. However, this limitation only applies to the phone that you’re using.

Limitations

Google is going to expand the compatibility as time goes on, but for the time being, there’s only a handful of phones that can use this feature. You can use it if you’re rocking a Pixel 4a or newer. Also, you can if you have a Xiaomi 12 Pro, 12T Pro, 13, or 13 Pro. So, if you have one of those 11 phones, then you’re good to get this set up.

When it comes to the Chromebook, it’s not as limited. Google didn’t specify any specific model that you needed to have. So, you should be good with most any computer. However, you need to have the most up-to-date version of ChromeOS. At the time of writing this article, we’re on (Version 115.0.5790.131).

Setting it up

Now, in order to set up this feature, there are a few things that you’ll need to set up first. First, make sure that your Chromebook is up to date. Open your settings and scroll all the way down on the left panel until you see the About ChromeOS section. When you click on it, you’ll see a page that will show you the current version your Chromebook is on.

On the right side of the screen, you’ll see a Check for update button. Click on it; if there is an update available, it will update your system, If not, then it will tell you that your computer is up to date.

Next, you’ll want to enable Phone Hub. This is a panel that has information and settings that affect your phone. Go back to your settings and click on the Connected Devices section. There, you’ll see a section called Android phone. Click on the Set up button on the right of the screen.

When you do, you’ll see a dropdown menu with a list of the devices connected to your Google account. Select the phone that you want to connect. After that, enter your Google account password. Once you enter your password, you’ll get an All done screen that you can exit out of.

Back in the settings, you’ll see your phone with a little arrow on the right of the screen. Click on it and enable Phone Hub on the resulting screen. It should be the third item down. You can choose what content you want to see in the hub. Make sure to toggle on the bottom option which is called Apps. This feature might be enabled by default.

How to stream chromebook apps 4

Now, on your phone

On your phone, go to your settings and scroll down to the Connected Devices button. Under your Bluetooth devices, tap on the Connection preferences button. Scroll down to the Chromebook button. On the resulting page, you’ll see some toggles that you’ll be able to flip. Make sure that the Apps toggle is enabled. You can also read and enable the other features as you seek fit.

When you enable this option, click on the Phone Hub. It’s the button on the taskbar right next to the date; it’s a little phone icon. On the bottom of the hub, you will see a section at the bottom reading Recent apps. It will show you your five most recently-used apps. To the far right, you’ll see a circle with four app icons in it. This will show you all of the apps you have installed on your phone.

When you click on an app, you might get an error message. The message will tell you that it can’t open the app. It will then tell you to “Turn on ‘Show Lock screen when waking from sleep’ and try again.” Click on the Settings button on the bottom of the notification. It will take you to your Lock screen and sign in settings. When you’re there, enable the top setting.

Just know that this setting will lock the device every time you close it or it enters sleep mode. You’ll need to enter your password or pin every time you open your computer. That could be an inconvenience for you, but it’s required for this to work. After you enable it, you’ll be able to open the apps.

Here’s a tip, if you don’t want to have to enter your password every time your computer goes to sleep, you can enable the Smart Lock feature. This will unlock your Chromebook when you unlock your phone.

After that, you are good to stream your apps to your Chromebook! If you want to know more about ChromOS and Chromebooks, read the official blog.

Elon Musk to take his SEC case to the Supreme Court

0
[ad_1]

Elon Musk is reportedly considering taking his fight with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to the Supreme Court. Attorney Alex Spiro, who is a lawyer for Musk, confirmed on Tuesday that the Tesla CEO plans to ask the highest court in the country to determine whether the SEC exploited a consent decree that restricts him from talking about Tesla’s financials on Twitter, which is now called X. An appeals court previously dismissed Musk’s allegations of abuse against the SEC.

The consent decree arose from an August 2018 tweet from Musk where he said that he was “considering taking Tesla private.” The multi-billionaire added that he had secured the funding necessary for the privatization of the EV (electric vehicle) company. While Tesla has remained public all this while, his tweet affected the company’s share prices, causing financial losses to some investors. The SEC stepped in, alleging Musk of defrauding Tesla investors with false privatization claims.

A trial followed, eventually leading to a truce between Musk and Tesla. The two parties agreed to pay fines of $20 million each to cover the losses of Tesla investors. The agreement also required Musk to step down as the company’s board chairman and seek approval from a Tesla lawyer when tweeting about its financials. However, things didn’t end there. The SEC suspected that Musk may not have always complied with the last part of the agreement. Tesla and its CEO were repeatedly contacted by the agency’s lawyers over the matter.

Elon Musk wants the Supreme Court to settle his SEC case

Musk responded by alleging the SEC of harassing him with “endless, unfounded investigations.” He said that the agency abused the consent decree, which he had already labeled as a “muzzle” on his free speech. In mid-May 2023, an appeals court (the 2nd US Circuit of Appeals in Manhattan) dismissed his allegations. It subsequently refused to revisit the case or screening of Musk’s tweets because he had “changed his mind.” The Tesla CEO is now taking the case to the Supreme Court.

According to Reuters, which first reported Musk’s plans to turn to the Supreme Court, the country’s highest court reviews about 5,000 cases every year but hears oral arguments in only about 70 of them. Time will tell whether it takes up the “SEC v Musk” case. More importantly, where the Supreme Court overturns the consent decree that Musk isn’t happy with. If it does, the Tesla CEO would be able to talk more freely about his EV company on the rebranded social media platform X.

Critical MikroTik RouterOS Flaw Exposes 900,000 Systems

0
[ad_1]

MikroTik RouterOS were vulnerable to a privilege escalation vulnerability which was first disclosed in June 2022 at REcon. The vulnerability existed on the x86 Virtual Machines of RouterOS, where a root shell can be obtained.

However, the new CVE for this vulnerability was assigned only in the middle of July 2023 when researchers at Vulncheck published new exploits for this vulnerability that can exploit a wider range of Hardware.

MikroTik released patches for this vulnerability on their stable release version 6.49.7.

Further investigations revealed that 6.49.7 was the most installed version of the RouterOS, followed by the 6.48.6 version.

Most installed RouterOS versions (Source: Vulncheck)

CVE-2023-30799: Privilege Escalation from Admin to Super Admin

This vulnerability exists due to improper privilege management on the RouterOS versions 6.49.7 through 6.48.6, allowing threat actors to escalate their privileges from admin to super-admin on the Winbox or HTTP interface.

This can lead to arbitrary code execution on the system by the threat actor. The CVSS score for this vulnerability was given as 9.1 (Critical). Reports indicated that more than 900K routers were vulnerable to CVE-2023-30799.

Authentication Required But Still Dangerous

Though this vulnerability requires authentication, it is easier to obtain the credentials as most installations do not change the default “admin” username. Things got even worse when RouterOS prompted their users to set a blank password in October 2021.

In addition to this, the RouterOS was also vulnerable to brute force attacks on their API port. Nearly 400K routers were exposing their API ports to the internet, which is less when compared to the Winbox or HTTP interface exposure.

Vulncheck has released a complete report on this vulnerability which mentions the origin, exploitation, and other information.

For optimal security, it is recommended that users promptly update to the latest version (6.49.8 or 7.x) and apply the necessary patch to address the vulnerability.

iPhone 15 series could utilize ‘hybrid lens technology’

0
[ad_1]

According to a tipster, the upcoming iPhone 15 smartphones will be the first global smartphones to use a hybrid lens technology. This info comes from RcloudS tipster, and was relayed by MacRumors.

The entire iPhone 15 series could end up using hybrid lens technology

Just to be clear, this refers to all four iPhone 15 models, and no they won’t be the first to use this in general. Several Chinese OEMs have already used hybrid lens technology, so it’s not exactly brand new.

What does this mean, exactly? Well, the lenses for the primary wide cameras will be made of one glass element, and 6 plastic elements. At the moment, on the iPhone 14, wide cameras use seven plastic elements.

The tipster also shared that the aperture will be f/1.7, compared to f/1.79 on the iPhone 14 Pro models. As a reminder, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus had an aperture of an f/1.5, so this is technically a downgrade in that sense.

The iPhone 15 Pro cameras will be able to capture more light

The aperture change may be related to the iPhone 15 Pro models only, though. The tipster says that the primary wide camera on those devices will be able to capture 15-20% more light. That could result in better images overall, with richer tones, if Apple manages to balance things out.

Another thing to note is that all iPhone 15 models are expected to use a 48-megapixel Sony IMX803 camera this time around, as its main camera. That is the same sensor the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are using.

The iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to use a new main camera made up of eight elements. Two glass elements will be used there, and six plastic elements. That change could be made only to the ‘Pro Max’ model, though.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 15 series in September, though a recent rumor suggested that the launch could be moved to October, due to some display issues for ‘Pro’ models.

Twitter has a new official handle as part of its rebrand

0
[ad_1]

As many of you know, Twitter’s rebrand kicked off a couple of days ago. Elon Musk is getting rid of the Twitter name and logo, in favor of the ‘X’ branding. Well, Twitter also has a new official handle now, as part of this rebranding.

Twitter has a new official handle, as rebrand continues

The company has changed its official handle from @Twitter to @X. If you opt to access @Twitter now, you’ll get the following message: “This account is no longer active. Follow @X for updates”.

All former @Twitter tweets can be found in the @X account now. And yes, we’re still calling them tweets, as that’s still the official name on the site. We have no idea what they’ll be called once the rebrand is complete.

In addition to this, the company is also ditching the Twitter Blue name, of course. The company’s subscription service has a new name now, it’s called @XBlue (Blue subscription) on the main description page.

Twitter seems to be replacing the ‘Twitter’ name with ‘X’ wherever it can. In case you’re wondering about other, official handles, well, they have new names as well.

Other official Twitter accounts have also been changed

So, @TwitterSupport, @TwitterDev, and @TwitterAPI are now gone. They’ve been rebranded to @Support, @Xdevelopers, and @API.

There’s also one interesting story about the @X handle. That handle was not in Twitter’s possession, until today. It was in the possession of Gene X Hwang, for his photography/video studio ‘Orange Photography’.

That studio now has a new handle, and he used it to tweet: “all’s well that ends well”. If we had to guess, we’d say that X paid Hwang to relinquish his handle, otherwise he’d be angry. That’s just an assumption, we have no idea what happened.

We’ll see more changes on ‘X’, of course, as the rebranding continues.

Researchers discover major CSAM pandemic on Mastodon

0
[ad_1]

Twitter’s erratic changes following Musk’s acquisition have led to a rise of several new Twitter-like platforms, including Mastodon, which promises to be a decentralized social media free from the influence of billionaire tech moguls. However, according to a new study by Stanford University, this lack of content moderation has caused a Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) pandemic on Mastodon, raising significant concerns about user safety.

In order to detect CSAM images, researchers utilized tools like Google’s SafeSearch API, designed to identify explicit images, and PhotoDNA, a specialized tool to detect flagged CSAM content. The study uncovered 112 instances of known CSAM within 325,000 posts on the platform, with the first one appearing within a mere five minutes of searching.

Additionally, the research highlighted 554 posts containing frequently used hashtags or keywords that bad actors exploited to gain more engagement. Moreover, 1,217 text-only posts pointed to “off-site CSAM trading or grooming of minors,” thus further raising some serious concerns about the platform’s moderation techniques.

“We got more photoDNA hits in a two-day period than we’ve probably had in the entire history of our organization of doing any kind of social media analysis, and it’s not even close,” researcher David Thiel.

Shortcomings of a decentralized platform

Unlike platforms like Twitter, which are governed by algorithms and content moderation rules, Mastodon operates on instances, each administered independently. And although this offers autonomy and control to end-users, it also means that administrators lack real authority over content or servers.

This shortcoming was also evident in the study, which highlighted an incident where the mastodon.xyz server suffered an outage due to CSAM content. And the maintainer of the server stated that they handle moderation in their spare time, causing delays of up to several days in addressing such content.

How to fix the moderation issue?

Although the specific approach towards moderating content on decentralized platforms is still a subject of debate, one potential solution could involve forming a network of trusted moderators from various instances collaborating to address problematic content. But, for new platforms like Mastodon, this could be a costly endeavour.

However, another emerging solution could be the development of advanced AI systems capable of detecting and flagging potentially abusive posts or illegal material.

Elon Musk says ‘X’ will become the most valuable brand in the world

0
[ad_1]

Elon Musk firmly believes ‘X’ will become the most valuable brand in the world. He flat-out said so in a tweet. For those of you who are out of the loop, he’s basically talking about Twitter.

Elon Musk is convinced ‘X’ will become the most valuable brand in the world

Elon Musk kicked off the Twitter rebrand a couple of days ago. The social media network is now called ‘X’, and has a new logo, the blue bird is gone. The change is still not complete, though, not at all. Tweets are mentioned all over the site, and that’s just one of the problems.

In any case, it’s not a secret that Elon Musk refers to ‘X’ as the ‘everything app’. He wants to make this social media network do a lot more than just being a social media network, it would seem.

Elon Musk is inspired by ‘WeChat’ in its attempt to sculpt ‘X’ into the ‘everything app’

Elon Musk mentioned WeChat more than once over the years. WeChat is immensely popular in China, and it’s essentially a messaging and calling app, but it does so much more than that. It evolved into the ‘everything app’, basically.

That’s what Elon Musk wants to achieve with ‘X’, and offer it to the world, it would seem. You can expect to see various new services added to the platform in the future.

Job listings are coming to ‘X’, as are banking and payment plans

It was recently reported that job listings are coming to Twitter aka ‘X’, so the app should be able to help you find a job. Twitter’s CEO also confirmed that banking and payment plans are also coming to ‘X’.

That’s just the beginning, though. One would assume Elon Musk can try to make the transition under the Twitter brand, as it’s so recognizable, but he wanted to scratch that whole branding, and push things into a different direction.

Killing off Twitter brand may be the wrong move, only time will tell

That may seem like a bad move, as Twitter is extremely recognizable all over the world, but on the other hand, it’s known as the social media network, not as the ‘everything app’.

It remains to be seen if Elon Musk will succeed in his attempt. He firmly believes that ‘X’ will become the most valuable brand in the world, so it remains to be seen if that will happen, and how long will it take if it does happen.

Optimizing liquidity in DeFi pools

0
[ad_1]

In the ever-evolving world of decentralized finance (DeFi), liquidity management plays a vital role. One platform that stands out in the DeFi landscape is Balancer BAL. Balancer is an innovative automated portfolio manager and liquidity provider that enables users to optimize their liquidity in DeFi pools. In this article, we will delve into the features, benefits, and the significant role Balancer BAL plays in the DeFi ecosystem.

Understanding Balancer BAL

What is Balancer?

Balancer is a decentralized protocol built on the Ethereum blockchain that allows users to create and manage automated portfolio-like pools. These pools, composed of multiple tokens, are intelligently balanced by Balancer based on predetermined rules. This enables efficient asset allocation and automated portfolio rebalancing. In the realm of online trading platforms, one notable mention is Bitcoin Era which provides users with a seamless trading experience. For better insight you can visit Quantum Prime Profit.

The Role of BAL

BAL is the native governance token of the Balancer protocol. Holders of BAL tokens have the power to influence the direction and decision-making within the Balancer ecosystem. The token serves as a means of participation and governance for the community.

Optimizing Liquidity in DeFi Pools

Balancer BAL plays a crucial role in optimizing liquidity within DeFi pools. Liquidity is the lifeblood of any trading ecosystem, and Balancer offers unique features that enhance liquidity provision and management.

Flexible Pool Creation

Balancer enables users to create customizable liquidity pools with multiple tokens and weightings. Unlike traditional automated market makers (AMMs) that focus on pairs of tokens, Balancer allows up to 8 tokens per pool. This flexibility provides users with a wider range of investment options and strategies.

Dynamic Balancing

One of the key features of Balancer is its ability to automatically rebalance pool weights. As the prices of tokens fluctuate, Balancer dynamically adjusts the token weightings to maintain the desired portfolio allocation. This dynamic balancing ensures that the pool remains aligned with the desired investment strategy.

Smart Order Routing

Balancer incorporates a smart order routing mechanism that optimizes trading execution across various liquidity sources. This feature ensures that trades are routed efficiently to achieve the best possible prices and minimize slippage.

Fee Collection and Distribution

In Balancer pools, liquidity providers earn fees based on the trading activity within the pool. These fees are collected and distributed to liquidity providers in proportion to their share of the pool. This incentivizes liquidity provision and rewards participants for their contribution to the ecosystem.

Benefits of Balancer BAL

Now that we have explored the key features of Balancer BAL, let’s delve into the benefits it offers to users and liquidity providers.

Diversification and Customization

Balancer allows users to create pools with multiple tokens, providing a high level of diversification. This enables investors to spread their risk across different assets, reducing exposure to individual token volatility. Additionally, the customizable nature of Balancer pools allows users to align their investments with specific strategies and preferences.

Efficient Portfolio Management

Balancer’s dynamic balancing feature ensures that the desired portfolio allocation is maintained even as token prices fluctuate. This automated portfolio management reduces the need for constant manual intervention and rebalancing, saving time and effort for users.

Enhanced Liquidity Provision

By enabling liquidity providers to earn fees based on pool activity, Balancer incentivizes participation and liquidity provision. This, in turn, enhances the overall liquidity in the DeFi ecosystem, making it more robust and efficient.

Community Governance

As a BAL token holder, users have the opportunity to participate in the governance and decision-making process of the Balancer protocol. This decentralized governance model empowers the community and ensures that the platform evolves in a direction aligned with the collective interests of its users.

Conclusion

Balancer BAL is an exceptional DeFi protocol that optimizes liquidity in pools by offering flexible pool creation, dynamic balancing, smart order routing, and fee collection. With its emphasis on diversification, efficient portfolio management, and enhanced liquidity provision, Balancer BAL has emerged as a leading player in the DeFi space.

If you are looking to maximize your liquidity provision and explore innovative ways to manage your DeFi investments, Balancer BAL is a platform worth considering. Its unique features, benefits, and community governance make it a compelling choice for both experienced and novice participants in the DeFi ecosystem.
