Samsung is pushing a new update to the Galaxy A71 5G and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite on Verizon’s network in the US. The devices are getting last month’s security patch. It brings more than 60 vulnerability fixes.

The Galaxy A71 5G has already received Samsung’s June 2023 security update in most parts of the world. The US version of the phone has also picked up last month’s SMR (Security Maintenance Release) on most networks. But the company kept Verizon users waiting for it all this while.

The wait has ended today, with the phone getting a new update containing the June SMR. The updated firmware build number for this 2020 premium mid-range handset is A716VSQU7GWE2. According to SamMobile, which first reported this update for the Verizon-specific Galaxy A71 5G model (SM-A716V), the device isn’t getting any new features or improvements with this update. It’s all about security fixes.

The story is slightly different for the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite. The mid-range tablet hasn’t received the June update widely, so Verizon users are one of the first to get dibs on it. The new firmware version for the device is. Once again, it appears to be just a bunch of security fixes and nothing else. Samsung may push the new security patch to the tablet widely in the coming days.

As said earlier, the June SMR contains fixes for more than 60 vulnerabilities. These include a host of Android OS fixes and a few Galaxy-specific ones. A handful of them were classified as “critical” security patches by Google. If you’re using the Galaxy A71 5G or Galaxy Tab A7 Lite on Verizon’s network in the US, you should get this update soon. You can navigate to Settings > Software update > Download and install to check for new updates.

The June update for Galaxy A71 5G and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite users on Verizon’s network comes a little later than usual. Samsung has already started pushing the July SMR to eligible Galaxy devices. It contains fixes for as many as 90 vulnerabilities, including a few critical ones.

Samsung has already updated dozens of models to the latest security patch, including a few in the US. More Galaxy devices will get the July update in the coming days. The Galaxy A71 5G and Galaxy Tab A7 Lite may not get it, though. These devices are only eligible for biannual security updates. The disclosed technology can automatically switch a connected flight mode on before or during a flight to provide portable computing devices with granular levels of connectivity.”

With the Android 14 launch scheduled for fall 2023, it’s unlikely that we can see Connected Flight Mode anytime soon.

The “team” behind Genesis Market is advertising the sale of its source code and database on a hacker forum, expressing willingness to sell.

The operators of Genesis Market, a once-thriving Dark Web platform for stolen data and hacking services, are now attempting to sell their defunct enterprise. The FBI’s operation earlier this year resulted in the seizure of the platform’s clear web domains and the arrest of numerous site administrators and users.

However, it appears that the Dark Web platform, which was a hub for illicit activities, remains intact and is being offered for sale, as reported by The Record.

The advertisements, which surfaced on June 28, caught the attention of researchers and experts who had been closely monitoring Genesis Market. Michele Campobasso, a researcher at the Eindhoven University of Technology, first identified a post on CrdClub, followed by Recorded Future News identifying an identical post on Exploit Forum.

The FBI’s operation in April led to the arrests of nearly 120 individuals globally who had been utilizing Genesis Market for fraudulent activities. Additionally, the law enforcement agency successfully located the platform’s backend servers, acquiring valuable information about approximately 59,000 user accounts. The impact of this operation extended not only to Genesis Market’s surviving .onion site but also affected its primary alternatives, Russian Market and 2easy Shop.

The user claimed that despite the FBI’s seizure of the marketplace’s open web domains, the Dark Web platform was still operational. The sale purportedly includes the complete database (excluding some client details), source codes, scripts, and server infrastructure.

Genesis Market stood out among its competitors by not only facilitating the sale of stolen data and credentials but also providing a platform that enabled criminals to weaponize that data using a custom browser extension for impersonation-as-a-service (IMPaaS). Campobasso stated that Genesis Market represented an innovative threat model in the cybercriminal ecosystem.

Who will buy Genesis Market?

There are multiple reasons why this attempt to sell the marketplace is expected to remain unfruitful. Firstly, it is important to note that purchasing a site like Genesis Market is illegal and could lead to severe legal consequences for the buyer. Furthermore, there is a possibility that this sale is part of an FBI honeypot operation, where law enforcement agencies entrap potential criminals.

Additionally, Genesis Market’s reputation among the Dark Web community has been irreparably damaged, making it unlikely to regain its former stature. While attempts were made to restore consumer confidence following the takedown, criminal forums banned the account associated with Genesis Market, reflecting the lack of trust within the Dark Web community.

As law enforcement agencies continue their relentless pursuit of cyber criminals, the Genesis Market saga serves as a reminder that digital crime never truly disappears but rather evolves to find new avenues for exploitation. It’s been a year since Carl Pei launched the first Nothing Phone, and the device proved to be a worthy competitor in the smartphone market. It was good enough to get us excited about the next iteration, and it’s here! The Nothing Phone (2) just launched, and it has a decent price (via The Verge).

Nothing has a few devices under its belt, and it’s established this unique transparent aesthetic for them. This trend continues here, as the Nothing Phone (2) incorporates this look. In fact, the second iteration bears several similarities to its predecessor.

One of the most noticeable similarities is the Glyph Interface. It retains much the same shape. However, we see that it’s more segmented than what we saw with the Nothing Phone (1). Another notable change is with the recording indicator. Instead of being a dot on the back, it’s a little strip.

The Nothing Phone (2) finally launched, and it’s coming to The States

One bummer with the Nothing Phone (1) was the fact that it didn’t launch in the US market. That was unfortunate, as there were a lot of tech users in The States who were excited about trying out this phone. Well, not too long ago, Carl Pei confirmed that the Phone (2) was going to hit the US market, and he delivered on that promise.

The Nothing Phone (2) has a slightly larger 6.7-inch display that’s said to reach an impressive 1,600-nit peak brightness. That’s more than twice the 700-nit brightness of the last iteration.

Moving onto the internals, here’s where we see the biggest change for this phone. This phone uses the much more powerful Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor. It’s a radical departure from the mid-range Snapdragon 795 from the Nothing Phone (1).

Backing that up, there are a few RAM and storage configurations. The base model has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The next one has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Lastly, the most premium tier has 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

As for the cameras, the Nothing Phone (2) has two 50MP cameras on the back. Up front, there’s a 32MP selfie camera. The company boasts improvements in the cameras and image processing, which can be expected.

As for the battery, it saw a 200mAh increase from the Nothing Phone (1)’s 4,500mAh to 4,700mAh. We’ll have to see how the more powerful processor impacts the battery life.

Now, let’s talk price

The price has been a pretty big talking point surrounding the Nothing Phone (2). Rumors pointed to this phone costing around $800 when it launches. However, the phone’s a bit cheaper than that.

The Nothing Phone (2) starts at $599 (£579 / €679) for the 8GB/128GB model. The 12GB/256GB model will run you back $699 (£629 / €729) and the 12GB/512GB variant costs $799 (£699 / €849).

That’s not a bad asking price for a phone running this powerful of a processor. It’s also a good price because that’s the price that Pixel Phones started at. However, the Pixel 8 is expected to cost $649 when it launches. This new price undercuts the Pixel phones, so Google might have some competition.

“Whisper” refers to OpenAI’s speech-to-text model, while “DALL-E 2” is the company’s image-generating model.

Additionally, OpenAI has said that starting in early 2024, it would stop using older models in the Completions API.

“Today all existing API developers with a history of successful payments can access the GPT-4 API with 8K context”, the company announces.

“We plan to open up access to new developers by the end of this month and then start raising rate limits after that depending on compute availability.”

Additionally, the business stated that it is planning to securely enable fine-tuning for GPT-4 and GPT-3.5 Turbo and anticipates making this capability accessible later this year.

New Improvements in GPT-4

With the launch of GPT-4, OpenAI’s text generation technology has advanced significantly. In contrast to its predecessor, GPT-3.5, which could only handle text inputs, GPT-4 can receive text and picture inputs as well as create text (including code).

Older OpenAI models, notably GPT-3 and its variations, will no longer be supported as of January 4, 2024, and will be replaced by new “base GPT-3” models, which one would assume are more compute-efficient. 

By January 4, developers using the old models will need to manually upgrade their integrations, and beyond that date, developers utilizing improved old models will need to fine-tune replacements on top of the new basic GPT-3 models.

“We will be providing support to users who previously fine-tuned models to make this transition as smooth as possible,” OpenAI wrote. 

“In the coming weeks, we will reach out to developers who have recently used these older models, and will provide more information once the new completion models are ready for early testing.”

Hence, with the public release of GPT-4, OpenAI has made major strides toward its mission of improving artificial intelligence.

Developers from all around the world will now have access to GPT-4’s capabilities, providing them the chance to build creative apps that are also aware of their surroundings.

Yesterday, several photos of Galaxy Z Flip 5 dummy units hit the internet, giving us a closer look at the design of Samsung‘s new clamshell foldable. Today, we have real-life photos of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Among other things, we can see that the display crease isn’t completely gone.

Shared on Reddit, the latest Galaxy Z Fold 5 leak gives us four real-life photos of the device. They confirm rumors that the new foldable will feature a redesigned hinge that eliminates the gap between two halves of the device when folded. There may still be a small gap, but certainly not as prominent as on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. This change makes the device less bulky and easy to carry.

The new hinge was also said to reduce the crease along the fold line on the inner display. Unfortunately, the crease is still visible. The quality of the photo is too poor to ascertain if Samsung has made any improvements. But the Galaxy Z Fold 5 certainly won’t give you a flawless folding screen. The rest of the design appears unchanged from the 2022 model—bar a relocated LED flash unit on the back.

Interestingly, the user who posted these photos on Reddit claims that they obtained them from someone else who was trying to sell the phone to them. It’s unclear where the person got the device from, though. The handset has a “confidential” label on the back that says “Not for sale.” Samsung may have handed over the device to someone for early testing ahead of its launch later this month.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Flip 5 will debut on July 26

Samsung has already announced the date for its next Galaxy Unpacked event. The company is holding its latest big launch event on Wednesday, July 26. While past Unpacked events took place in the US, the Galaxy maker is taking it to its home country South Korea this year.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 won’t be the only products coming out through Samsung’s doors later this month. The Korean biggie is also readying three new flagship tablets (the Galaxy Tab S9 lineup) and a couple of Wear OS smartwatches — Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic. It may have more announcements lineup for the event.
