According to a recent post from Patrick Nepper, Google Chrome Group Product Manager, the tech giant has launched some major feature upgrades in its Password Manager.

Briefly, Google Chrome password manager will now boast five new features, facilitating users in managing secure account logins. These include,

  • Dedicated setting and desktop shortcut: Google Chrome users will get a clear option for the Password Manager in Chrome browsers. Users can find this menu under the “chrome://password-manager/passwords” setting. Besides, users can also add a dedicated Google Password Manager shortcut on their desktops for quick access.
  • Biometric authentication for desktop users: The latest password manager release allows users to enable more authentication methods (biometric/facial recognition) even on their desktops. However, this setting will predominantly rely on the computer’s operating system’s support for other authentication methods.
  • Add Notes feature: Google Password Manager now has an “add note” feature to let users quickly save important information.
  • Password import feature: While most contemporary password managers support a password import feature to let users move their saved passwords quickly, Google Password Manager previously lacked it. However, with the latest update, the tool will empower users to move their saved passwords from other password managers to Google via a simple .csv file.
  • Weak password detection for iOS: For iOS users, Google Password Manager offers a “Password Checkup” tool that flags reused and weak passwords alongside breached ones.

This new update comes weeks after Google announced “PassKeys” roll-out supporting passwordless authentication. With Passkeys, Google aims to promote secure account logins in tandem with regular passwords. And now, the latest changes in the password manager will further help Google users to manage their accounts’ safety.

Magic links mainly involve email addresses to log into a particular account. Upon clicking the magic link, the app directly grants the user access. Popular websites/apps that use magic links are Slack and Medium, to name a few.

How magic links work:

When registering for the first time on an application, the app prompts the user to share their email address to create a customised magic link. 

Upon clicking on the link that the user receives in their email address, the user gets authenticated by matching the token.

Advantages of passwordless authentication methods

We have gone through the many methods that can be used instead of passwords to access and re-access a new account. But why do companies prefer this over the former method? Let’s look at the reasons one by one.

Honda eCommerce Platform Flaw Exposes Customers’ Data

Eaton Zveare, a security researcher, has released the specifics of major vulnerabilities uncovered in Honda’s e-commerce platform for power equipment, marine, and lawn & garden products.

It allowed anyone to reset their password for any account and was therefore open to unauthorized access.

The researcher found the security flaws and the data leakage early this year, and he informed Honda of his findings in mid-March. 

The vendor acknowledged the problems right away and congratulated the white hat hacker for his efforts but did not compensate him because it lacked a bug bounty program.

Honda reported that it did not discover any proof of malicious exploitation.

“I compromised Honda’s power equipment/marine/lawn & garden dealer eCommerce platform by exploiting a password reset API that let me easily reset the password of any account,” said the researcher.

“Broken/missing access controls made it possible to access all data on the platform, even when logged in as a test account.”

The platform drives Honda Dealer Sites, a service that allows dealers to build websites to sell Honda goods. Dealers are given all the resources they need to build a website, market it, and manage product orders after they create an account.

A Password Reset API Vulnerability In An Admin Dashboard

The researcher found a password reset API flaw in the admin dashboard that let him change the password for a Honda test account setup. 

Complete administrative access obtained with access to:

  • 21,393 customer orders across all dealers from August 2016 to March 2023, including customer name, address, phone number, and ordered items.
  • 1,570 dealer websites (1,091 of those are active). It was possible to modify any of these sites.
  • 3,588 dealer users/accounts (includes first & last name, email address). It was possible to change the password of any of these users.
  • 1,090 dealer emails (includes first & last name).
  • 11,034 customer emails (includes first & last name).
  • Potentially: Stripe, PayPal, and Authorize.net private keys for dealers who provided them.
  • Internal financial reports.

The researcher mentioned that the “powerdealer[.]honda.com” subdomains are given to authorized resellers and dealers by Honda’s e-commerce platform, which contains the API issue.

He discovered that the Power Equipment Tech Express (PETE) password reset API on one of Honda’s websites performed reset requests without a token or the prior password and only required a valid email.

Despite the absence of this vulnerability on the e-commerce subdomains login portal, anyone can access internal dealership data using this straightforward attack because the credentials changed on the PETE site would still work there.

The researcher obtained a legitimate dealer email address from a YouTube video that showed how to use a test account to access the dealer dashboard.

“This platform assigns numeric IDs to everything from orders to sites. The IDs were sequential so just adding +1 to the current ID would bring you to the next record”, the researcher explained.

The browser address bar displayed the ID that was given to each dealer site. He discovered that he could access the dashboard of a different dealer by altering that ID.

The last stage of the operation was to get access to Honda’s admin panel, which serves as the main management interface for the company’s e-commerce platform.

By altering an HTTP response to make it appear as though he was an admin, the researcher gained unrestricted access to the Honda Dealer Sites platform.

The Researcher said that highly targeted phishing campaigns might be developed with access to more than 21,000 client orders to deceive customers into submitting even more sensitive data or to try and install malware on their devices.

Also, more than 1000 active websites could have been secretly changed to include dangerous malware like credit card skimmers and crypto miners.

Google TV on Android 14 adds quite a few new features

Google TV just received the beta for Android 14 this week, and it adds more than a few new features to the platform.

All of the new features available in the Android 14 beta for Google TV that have been discovered so far are focused on accessibility. Bringing what are likely going to be some much-needed improvements for lots of users. Google even makes it easier to find and enable or disable these features by giving ‘Accessibility’ its own menu on the main settings page.

All of the new features mentioned (via 9To5Google) will be located in here. So if you’re looking for them, simply head to settings, then navigate to accessibility. From there, you’ll find all the new features that are part of the new update. There’s also a new icon for power and energy. It’s a small change but it is there.

Android 14 for Google TV new features

We’ve already mentioned that Accessibility is now a main menu, but there are a handful of other accessibility features worth pointing out that have been found so far.

Color correction settings

First up is the color correction settings. You can toggle this on if you want to use it. In doing so, you can swap between four different options. There’s a grayscale option, and then there are three colors modes. These include Deuteranomaly, Portanomaly, and Tritanomaly. Both the first two color modes are slightly different color corrections of red-green. While the Tritanomaly is a color correction of blue-yellow colors.

Audio descriptions

In addition to color correction settings, there’s also a feature for audio descriptions. Turning this on will read descriptions of what’s happening on-screen to you. But only for supported content. There’s not really a definitive list on what movies and shows are supported, so this is something you’ll need to check on a case by case basis.

Text scaling

There’s now an option to adjust the size of text and changing this value will adjust the size for the entire system UI. If you have a little harder time with reading smaller text, especially from farther away as a TV would be, enable this and adjust to your liking. There are options for default which is 100%, or you can flip it down to small which is 85%, large which is 115%, and largest which is 130%. Nothing to crazy here for text sizes. But the extra scaling should help.

Bold text

Pretty self-explanatory here. Enabling this toggle makes all text bold system wide. This more or less goes hand-in-hand with the text scaling feature.

Samsung has confirmed that its second Unpacked event of the year will happen in July, in its homeland. Having said that, a new report just surfaced, claiming that a separate Galaxy Z Fold 5 & Flip 5 event will happen in the US and Canada, on August 11.

During the event, both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 will launch. That’s not all, though, as the Galaxy Watch 6 series is also expected. More products could be included, though, of course.

Samsung opted for an earlier launch this time around

Samsung usually hosts its second ‘Unpacked’ in August, but this year the company opted for an earlier launch. Why? Well, your guess is as good as ours. The arrival of Google’s Pixel Fold handset could have something to do with it, though.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5, based on reports, will be quite similar to its predecessor. Changes in the hinge department are rumored, though, as the phone is expected to fold flat, unlike its predecessor. The crease should also be less visible.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is expected to include a much larger outer display. It will also fold flat, like the Galaxy Z Fold 5. Both smartphones are rumored to include water and dust resistance, with an official IP rating. It remains to be seen if those rumors are accurate, though.

ASUS ZenFone 10 will be just as compact as the ZenFone 9

The ASUS ZenFone 10 screen rumors were wrong, it will remain just as compact as the ZenFone 9. For those of you out of the loop, ASUS confirmed yesterday that the ZenFone 10 will launch on June 29.

That being said, the company also confirmed the size of the phone’s display. The ZenFone 10 will retain a 5.9-inch panel, just like its predecessor. That basically means that it will be just as compact. Its dimensions probably won’t be identical, but we’re expecting similar numbers.

Rumors that surfaced a while back suggested that ASUS is planning to enlarge the display. A 6.3-inch screen was rumored for the ZenFone 9. Thankfully, that’s not true. The ZenFone 9 was one of the best compact smartphones in the market last year, if not the best one. It’s nice to see that users who don’t want to carry around bricks will have a solid option this year too.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be included, as will wireless charging

In any case, the company also confirmed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC will fuel the phone. That’s not surprising at all. The ZenFone 9 was fueled by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and that was a great combination.

The ZenFone 9 actually offered really good battery life, so we’re expecting something similar from the ZenFone 10. Wireless charging also got confirmed by the company, something that the ZenFone 9 lacked. We still don’t know how fast will it be, though.

ASUS did also touch upon the cameras, only briefly, though. The company said that the ZenFone 10 will include a “six-axis hybrid gimbal stabilizer 2.0”. The ZenFone 9 offered great stabilization, and the ZenFone 10 will build upon that with the second iteration of the tech.

What the ZenFone 9 also had is a great price tag. We do hope that ASUS will deliver something similar this year. We’ll find out everything on June 29, so stay tuned.

But now, users can pick what pictures they want to apply the cinematic photo effect to, and also save the effect to their device.

With cinematic photo effect, users can add a bit of life or flare to the regular still pictures. Google already does this for users and displays the cinematic pictures for viewing via the slideshow. Pictures in this slideshow are displayed at the top section of the Google Photos app.

But instead of waiting for Google Photos to prepare your cinematic pictures and save them, you can make some for yourself. A few weeks ago, this wasn’t possible, but with the selection of an option on your Google Photos app, you can now create a cinematic picture for yourself. How to make use of the ‘Cinematic photo’ effect in Google Photos

Cinematic pictures on Google Photos create a 3D representation of an image to make it more appealing. It does this with the power of machine learning, which it uses to predict the depth of an image. This feature first became available on Google Photos back in the year 2020. Ever since then, it serves 3D representations of once-still pictures to users. First, you need to confirm that your app is up-to-date and if it isn’t, you need to head over to the Play Store or App Store and install the update. Now tap on the ‘Library’ section at the bottom right-hand corner of the app interface. Then tap on ‘Utilities,’ which is one of the selections at the top section of your screen interface. To access the cinematic photo section, simply scroll down to the ‘Create new’ list of options.

Once there, you can tap on cinematic photos and then select any picture you wish to get its 3D effects. The software will take some time to create the 3D effects and once it’s through you can save the effect to your device. You can also simply watch as the foreground images pan across the screen without saving.

This adds some life to still pictures, making them a bit more interesting to view. Google Photo is making this feature available for public usage based on popular demand. Certainly, most users will put this feature to use on their pictures for that cinematic experience.

Several Reddit apps shutting down due to new API prices

Several third-party Reddit apps are shutting down at the end of this month, including Apollo, ReddPlanet, Sync, and rif is fun for Reddit (previously Reddit is Fun, aka RIF). This is a direct result of Reddit’s decision to charge developers and other companies for access to its APIs.

Announced in April, Reddit’s new API policy will be effective this month. The company plans to monetize the massive amount of human-to-human conversation data it has accumulated over the past 18 years. It says several big companies use its data to train their commercial AI models, so it would be fair to make them pay. Unfortunately, the new API pricing plans will end up costing a massive amount of money to the indie developers of third-party Reddit apps. It appears the cost will be too huge for them to sustainably run their projects, forcing them to shut down the apps.

Christian Selig, the developer of iOS-only Reddit app Apollo took to the platform on Thursday to share that the app is shutting down on June 30. According to him, the new API prices would cost him more than $20 million a year to operate the app. In a lengthy post, Selig said that “talks with Reddit have deteriorated to an ugly point” and that it’s no longer feasible for him to keep Apollo alive. “Reddit’s behavior has been so appalling that for any developer I’ve talked to, it’s completely erased the indication that they even want us around,” he added.

Other Reddit apps are also shutting down due to high costs

Developers of other Reddit apps have echoed Selig’s sentiment. RIF developer accused the company of “hostile treatment of developers,” adding that their operating cost would be “in the same ballpark” as Apollo’s with the new API pricing policy. “The app does not earn anywhere remotely near this number,” the developer said. They pointed fingers at Reddit’s decision to block ads in third-party apps, forcing them to rely solely on a paid subscription model. The platform also doesn’t allow sexually explicit material in third-party apps, while the official app still hosts such content.

ReddPlanet and Sync developers are saying the same thing. “Reddit has made it clear that I’m not welcome here,” the ReddPlanet developer said. The company hasn’t responded to developers shutting down popular Reddit apps due to its high API prices. It has exempted accessibility-focused apps from this API policy, but others must pay to stay active. Thousands of subreddits have already come together to protest this decision. Subreddits like r/gaming, r/pics, r/music,  and many others will go dark for at least 48 hours starting on June 12.

Most of these subreddits have more than 30 million subscribers each. So this protest will severely impact Reddit. It remains to be seen if the company budges. More importantly, if it makes some changes to the proposed policy or announces relaxations. Reddit CEO Steve Huffman is hosting an AMA (ask me anything) session about “the latest API updates, including accessibility, mod bots, and third-party mod tools” later today. We may hear something from Huffman during this AMA.

If you’ve played the Alto series, this will feel familiar, at least as far as the overall vibe is concerned. Summerhill feels like yet another visually-appealing, relaxing title.

As mentioned already, this game puts you in a pastoral setting, and it’s a puzzle-solving title. The graphics do remind us of the Alto series, for sure, and some other games, like Monument Valley.

Speaking of Monument Valley, the fans among you will be glad to hear that the composer behind Monument Valley 2 is attached to this project. His name is Todd Baker, and he is in charge of delivering a “folk-inspired” soundtrack for Summerhill.

This is a puzzle game which will uncover an ancient past of the landscape it’s set in

Yes, the gameplay will revolve around sheep herding. The developer actually said you’ll get “fluid herding-based gameplay” and can expect “gentle problem-solving”. What will the story be about, though? Well, the history of the landscape, or should we say its ancient past.

As expected, the puzzles will be getting more and more difficult as you progress. The devs also said that the game will put an emphasis on duty, companionship, and morality.

Harry Nesbitt, Land & Sea founder, said the following: “In many ways, sheep herding is in our DNA and we really wanted to do justice to this timeless tradition and tell a story that could only be told in this way”.

The company still didn’t share an exact release date for the game. Considering that the trailer is already out, we’re guessing it’s quite far along at this point. Speaking of which, the trailer is embedded below.

It can answer questions and advise you.

Instagram’s AI chatbot may not be as smart and knowledgeable as ChatGPT or Google Bard, but it could help people write creative captions for their posts and generate replies for messages. The app will boast 30 different AI personalities, so you can have multiple conversations with the AI without anything feeling repetitive. A second screenshot shared by Paluzzi suggests you will be able to bring AI into any conversation.

Instagram is now readying an AI chatbot

AI tools are all the rage right now thanks to the sensational debut of OpenAI’s ChatGPT late last year. The service continues to grow in popularity all over the world. It has also led to the launch of several other similar products. Google’s Bard is one of those with an identical set of features and capabilities. Microsoft has also integrated the ChatGPT-powered Bing AI into many of its products, including the SwiftKey keyboard app.

But that isn’t it. Social media platforms are also coming up with unique AI chatbots for their apps. Snapchat has already launched My AI, while TikTok is rumored to be working on a similar solution named Tako. Instagram may now follow soon. The company hasn’t announced anything but Paluzzi has been accurate with his findings several times in the past. He told the world about Instagram’s paid verification system a few weeks before the company launched it.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has already announced that the company is working on new AI-powered experiences for its products, which include Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, and more. He referred to those experiences as “AI personas”. An AI chatbot for Instagram appears to be one of those.
