The most obvious change revealed this week is the new design that Google Translate is getting. The Translate app on Android has just received a brand-new design, while the iOS version will be getting its own fresh look in just a few weeks. The redesign Translate experience includes larger canvas, voice input, as well as Lens camera translation.

Another important part of the update is related to gestures. To make the app more accessible, Google has added new gestures such as the ability to select a language with fewer taps, holding the language button to pick a recently used language with a swipe, and swiping down on the home screen text area to bring up recent translations.

Finally, the update expands the number of languages by an additional 33, which are also available on-device in the Translate app. The new languages include Basque, Corsican, Hawaiian, Hmong, Kurdish, Latin, Luxembourgish, Sundanese, Yiddish and Zulu, among others.

The March security updates for Android include fixes for two critical remote code execution (RCE) vulnerabilities impacting Android systems running versions 11, 12, 12L, and 13. Users should update as soon as they can.

The March 2023 Android Security Bulletin contains the details of the security vulnerabilities affecting Android devices. Security patch levels of 2023-03-05 or later address all of these issues.

That means, if your Android phone is at patch level 2023-03-05 or later then the issues discussed below have been fixed. The updates have been made available for Android 11, 12, and 13.

Android partners are notified of all issues at least a month before publication. However, this doesn’t always mean that the patches are available for devices from all vendors.

You can find your Android’s version number, security update level, and Google Play system level in your Settings app. You’ll get notifications when updates are available for you, but you can also check for updates.

For most phones it works like this: Under About phone or About device you can tap on Software updates to check if there are new updates available for your device, although there may be slight differences based on the brand, type, and Android version of your device.

Vulnerabilities

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database lists publicly disclosed computer security flaws. The CVEs that deal with RCE vulnerabilities which were patched in these updates are:

CVE-2023-20951 and CVE-2023-20954: both are critical RCE vulnerabilities in the System component. The most severe vulnerability could lead to remote code execution with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.

CVE-2022-33213 and CVE-2022-33256 are vulnerabilities in Qualcomm closed-source components that could allow for remote code execution. CVE-2022-33213 is a memory corruption vulnerability in a modem due to buffer overflow while processing a PPP packet. And CVE-2022-33256 is a memory corruption vulnerability due to the improper validation of an array index in a Multi-mode call processor.

Google only sparingly gives out details about vulnerabilities, so everyone gets a chance to patch before cybercriminals can start abusing the vulnerabilities in attacks. But there are some pointers in the descriptions of the vulnerabilities.

Memory corruption vulnerabilities are vulnerabilities that may occur in a computer system when its memory is altered without an explicit assignment. The contents of a memory location are modified due to programming errors which enable attackers to execute arbitrary code.

A buffer overflow is a type of software vulnerability that exists when an area of memory within a software application reaches its address boundary and writes into an adjacent memory region. In software exploit code, two common areas that are targeted for overflows are the stack and the heap.

PPP is commonly used as a data link layer protocol between two routers directly without any host or any other networking in between.

One other vulnerability that grabbed my attention was CVE-2021-33655 a vulnerability that occurs when sending malicious data to kernel by ioctl cmd FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO, kernel will write memory out of bounds. It jumped out not just because it was reported in 2021 but also because the security bulletin discloses that it is an elevation of privacy (EoP) vulnerability in the Kernel that could lead to local information disclosure with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.

A little digging revealed that a user with access to a framebuffer console driver could cause a memory out-of-bounds write via the FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO ioctl. The ioctl is a system call for device-specific input/output operations and other operations which cannot be expressed by regular system calls. The fix for this vulnerability was to prevent switching to screen resolutions which are smaller than the font size, and to prevent enabling a font which is bigger than the current screen resolution. Thisseems trivial, but it goes to show how many details go into safe coding.

It’s no secret that since its launch, the new ChatGPT-enabled Bing has attracted millions of users to sign up for the preview. And while many are still waiting to get access, Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s VP for Modern Life, Search, and Devices, said that the new Bing has already surpassed 100 million daily active users just weeks after its announcement.

Mehdi attributed the growth in Bing to a unique value proposition, as the combination of search, answers, chat, and creation into one experience has proven successful. He further stated that this surge in users serves as a validation of their view that the search industry is due for a reinvention.

While Bing is still a small player in the search market, Mehdi said that the company is also witnessing growth in engagement, with more people conducting more searches on Bing. This growth can be attributed to two reasons: Microsoft’s continued push to prevent users from installing Chrome, which has prompted many users to switch their primary browser, and Bing’s updated core web search ranking, which has improved in relevance and quality due to the recent integration of OpenAI’s Prometheus model.

A long way from Google

Although 100 million users are impressive, Bing still has a long way to go before catching up with Google, which has over 1 billion daily active users and dominates the search market. However, this growth has caused some concerns at Google, as the company now faces competition for the first time in almost a decade. In response, Google also launched its own AI system named Bard, but the company currently lacks a plan on how to implement the chatbot without compromising the traditional search business.

“This is a surprisingly notable figure, and yet we are fully aware we remain a small, low, single-digit share player. That said, it feels good to be at the dance,” said Mehdi.

After announcing its plan to prevent its customers from sharing their accounts with friends and family, Netflix started to trial new changes to password sharing in several countries from Latin America, including Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Argentina, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic.Earlier this week, Netflix announced that the changes to account sharing revealed last year will be rolled out in more countries. Detailed at the beginning of this month, these changes are now introduced in four countries before being rolled out globally in March.

Starting today, changes to account sharing are rolling out in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. If you live in any of these countries and share your account with one or more people, you’ll have to pay extra. But first, customers in these four countries will be asked to set their primary location, which will allow them and anyone who lives in the household to use the Netflix account.

Next, Netflix customers who’d like to provide access to their account to someone else will be able to do so from the Manage Access and Devices page. Another important change involves the ability to transfer a profile to a new account, which is paid for, thus keeping personalized recommendations, viewing history, My List, and saved games.

Don’t worry, even after setting your primary location, you will still be able to watch Netflix on your personal device or log into a new TV when you’re not at home.


The most important part of these changes is the option to buy an extra member. To continue to share your account with others, you will have to pay for each extra member who uses your account. Netflix customers subscribed to either Standard or Premium plan and live in one of the four countries mentioned can add an extra member sub account for up to two people they don’t live with.

Each sub account comes with a profile, personalized recommendations, login and password of their own. As far as the price goes, a sub account costs CAD$7.99 a month in Canada, NZD$7.99 in New Zealand, 3.99€ in Portugal, and 5.99€ in Spain.

Android March Update Fixes Multiple Vulnerabilities

The tech giant Google has rolled out monthly security updates for its Android users. With the March 2023 update, Google has fixed multiple vulnerabilities in different Android versions, releasing the updates in two installments.

The first installment, dated March 1, 2023, addressed vulnerabilities in the following components.

  • Framework: Received patches for 8 privilege escalation vulnerabilities, 2 information disclosure issues, and 1 denial of service flaw. All of these vulnerabilities attained a high-severity rating.
  • System: Includes fixes for 2 critical severity remote code execution vulnerabilities – CVE-2023-20951 and CVE-2023-20954. These flaws affected Android 11, 12, 12L, and 13, letting an adversary exploit the flaw with no user interaction. Besides, Google also fixed 9 high-severity privilege escalation vulnerabilities, 5 information disclosure issues, and 2 DoS flaws.
  • Google Play: The patches address CVE-2023-20956 (for Media Codecs), CVE-2023-20947 (Permission Controller), CVE-2023-20929 (Tethering), and CVE-2022-20499 and CVE-2023-20910 (WiFi).

Following this release, Google released another update installment on March 5, 2023. It includes an important Kernel patch for a high-severity privilege escalation vulnerability (CVE-2021-33655) in Frame Buffer. Besides, the update also includes security fixes for MediaTek components, Unisoc, and Qualcomm components, which the vendors have also directly released with details.

While Google has rolled out these updates already, not all Android users will receive the patches simultaneously. That’s because the relevant Android device vendors have their own schedules for releasing updates.

Hence, the users must stay vigilant without updating their devices as soon as they receive the relevant prompt. Users may also manually check any updates for their devices via the “Settings” menu.

However, the devices must be running Android 11 or higher since the older Android versions have reached their scheduled End-of-Life (EoL).

Apple has finally announced the official launch of its long-awaited classical music app, Apple Music Classical. The app will be available to download from the App Store on March 28, 2023. The app will be included for free as part of the Apple Music subscription, providing users access to over 5 million classical music tracks. Subscribers will enjoy the highest audio quality available and experience many classical favorites in a whole new way with immersive spatial audio. It will also feature hundreds of curated playlists, thousands of exclusive albums, deep dives on key works, and other intuitive browsing features.

The new Apple Music Classical app can be pre-ordered from the App Store now, and it’s a free download. The app requires iOS 15.4 or later and any Apple Music subscription (bar the Apple Music Voice Plan). Interestingly, Apple says there will be no iPadOS app at launch. The app will be available wherever Apple Music is, except in China, Japan, Korea, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Apple Music Classical was first announced in 2021 when the company acquired the classical music streaming service Primephonic. Primephonic, at the time, brought a high-quality listening experience for classical music aficionados, with advanced search and browsing functions optimized for the genre. 

Apple promised that the purchase of Primephonic would enhance its classical music offerings, starting with incorporating Primephonic playlists and audio content. In the future, Apple Music Classical will provide an even more immersive experience, with improved browsing and search capabilities based on composer and repertoire, as well as enhanced metadata and other features tailored to classical music enthusiasts.

Samsung is developing custom processors for its Galaxy smartphones, with plans to design custom CPU cores as well. But this isn’t happening in a snap. Galaxy flagships will come with a Snapdragon chipset for at least one more year. Like the Galaxy S23 series, next year’s Galaxy S24 is also expected to pack a special version of Qualcomm’s next-gen smartphone processor, tentatively named Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Early rumors about the chipset indicate we are in line for a massive performance boost.

According to tipster RGcloudS on Twitter, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy could boast a maximum clock speed of over 3.7GHz. If true, that would mean at least a ten percent improvement in raw CPU performance, which isn’t quite common. The special Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor powering the Galaxy S23 series this year has its prime CPU core clocked at 3.36GHz. Samsung has also got an overclocked GPU that Qualcomm isn’t proving to anyone else. The standard version tops out at 3.2GHz, though. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 shipped with a maximum clock speed of 3.0GHz.

The source adds that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will feature a triple-cluster CPU arrangement (1+4+3), unchanged from the current chipset. It will get one Cortex-X4 prime CPU core, four mid-cores, and three efficiency cores. The current solution has one Cortex-X3 prime core and two Cortex-A715 and two Cortex-A710 mid-cores with the same clock speed (2.8GHz). Qualcomm will likely retain this arrangement while upgrading to newer CPU cores from ARM. The same goes for the efficiency cores as well (three Cortex-A510 CPUs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2).

That said, there are rumors that Qualcomm will adopt an unusual 1+5+2 CPU arrangement this year. The five mid-cores will reportedly be the same solution (Cortex-A720) without any split. We have doubts, though. The company used Cortex-A715 and Cortex-A710 mid-cores last year because the former only supports 64-bit. It may opt for the same configuration on the new chipset as well. Things should get clearer in the coming months. Rumors are that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will arrive at least a couple of weeks earlier than its predecessor. We will keep you posted.

Meanwhile, rumors are that Samsung plans to debut its so-called Galaxy Chip in 2025. The Galaxy S25 series may be the first to get those in-house processors that the Korean firm can optimize from the development stage. The first two solutions may still use stock ARM CPU cores. Samsung’s custom CPUs reportedly won’t be ready before 2027. The world’s largest smartphone vendor is taking matters into its own hands to ensure that its Galaxy users always get the best out of their devices. It remains to be seen what it achieves over the next few years.

Roku users will be able to search for “local news” on Roku and and also visit the Live TV Zone on the Roku Home Screen Menu.

Roku is also adding Premium Subscriptions. This will allow users to quickly discover and sign up for premium channels. So they can expand their Live TV content offering. Premium Subscriptions will join Categories. Making it easier to find. This was announced last fall with the Live TV Channel Guide.

Roku is making it easier to find sports

With Roku OS 12, the company is making sports access and discovery a lot easier. Last year, Roku had launched their all-new Sports experience, which is a centralized location where users can browse and stream live and upcoming sports-related events across the Roku platform. This makes it easier for sports fans to find their favorite teams. Roku says that CBS Sports, MLB.TV, NBA App, and NBC Sports will join the list of supported channels for Sports.

Continue Watching is another new feature launching here, which is located within the What to Watch section, and will give users a single location to jump back into the content that they love. Channels that support this include discovery+, Prime Video, HBO MAX, Netflix, Paramount+ and the Roku Channel.

Roku says that OS 12 will start to roll out to users in the coming weeks. And additional updates will come in the coming months.
