Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) companies scraped YouTube video transcripts to train their engines, claims a new report. Several popular YouTubers such as MrBeast and Marques Brownlee have raised concerns, claiming their content is part of the massive datasets.

Investigation reveals subtitles from more than 170,000 YouTube videos scraped

According to an investigation by Proof News, several big companies scrubbed YouTube videos to train their AI engines. The observations and claims were co-published with Wired.

The investigation claims Apple, Anthropic, Nvidia, and Salesforce were among several tech companies that used “YouTube Subtitles”. Specifically speaking, these companies collectively ripped off subtitles from 173,536 YouTube videos.

Overall, more than 48,000 YouTube channels were used by these companies to build their AI datasets and train their AI engines, the report claims. YouTubers including MrBeast (289Mn subscribers), MKBHD (19Mn subscribers), PewDiePie (111Mn subscribers), and several more have their content in the datasets.

Apart from YouTubers, videos from news outlets like ABC News, the BBC, and The New York Times are part of the dataset. Simply put, several tech giants plugged YouTube subtitles into their AI engines.

Tool to confirm AI companies used YouTube data posted online

According to The Verge, the YouTube video subtitles dataset is part of a larger collection of material. Technically speaking, the majority of the companies using YouTube data relied on nonprofit EleutherAI’s dataset called The Pile. This is supposed to be an open-source collection that also contains datasets of books, Wikipedia articles, and content available in the public domain.

To prove that AI companies are using YouTube to build their datasets and train their engines, Proof News also released an interactive lookup tool. Any YouTuber, or even the common public, can check the data.

Besides the obvious issue of rewarding or compensating YouTubers for their content, these companies also face legal troubles. YouTube states using its video content to train AI — including transcripts — would violate the platform’s terms.

YouTube has reportedly refrained from responding to the report. However, it is quite likely that its parent company Google would take some steps to protect the video-sharing platform and its content creators.

So far, the datasets seem to contain plain text data. In other words, AI companies could be using only video transcripts or subtitles, and not video, to train their engines. Incidentally, the plain text data also contains live translations of the videos in Japanese, German, and Arabic.

Google has previously admitted it scrubbed some YouTube videos to train its AI engines. However, the search giant has ensured it has appropriate agreements with YouTubers. Needless to say, EleutherAI may not have any such agreement with each of the YouTubers whose videos are now part of the datasets used by tech giants to train their AI.

The changes are so apparent and diverse that it could be the biggest UI overhaul from Samsung ever, or at least since it switched to One UI in 2018 (with Android 9 Pie).

The tipster says the Android 15-based One UI 7.0 update will bring a new icon design As pointed out by SamMobile, Samsung doesn’t change its app icons often. These types of design overhauls happen once in several years, at least five years. So, we must be looking at an iconic update. Maybe the company will also improve system animations for smoother navigation.

There have also been rumors about a vertical app drawer. Of course, One UI 7.0 will bring new features as well. We are expecting tons of feature additions to Galaxy AI, Samsung’s suite of mobile AI features for Galaxy devices. There should be camera and multitasking improvements, among other things. Expect more leaks about One UI 7.0 in the coming weeks.

The big update might arrive a little late

Last year, Samsung began the One UI 6.0 public beta in the second week of August and started pushing the stable version at the end of October. Rumors say the One UI 7.0 update will be delayed. It’s unclear whether the beta or stable version will arrive late, or if the whole process will be pushed back a little. Even with a delay, we expect Samsung to begin the public rollout of its big feature update by November.

Galaxy S24 grabs Samsung’s July security update in the US

The July SMR (Security Maintenance Release) is Samsung’s latest monthly security patch for Galaxy devices. It contains fixes for over 60 vulnerabilities, including six critical and dozens of high-severity vulnerabilities in Android OS, Samsung services, and other system components that make up the whole device. The company has been pushing the update to eligible Galaxy smartphones and tablets since early this month.

Last week, the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra received the update in various international markets. Samsung has now released it in the US. Both carrier-locked and unlocked variants are getting the new security patch stateside. The updated firmware build numbers are S92*USQS3AXFC and S92*U1UES3AXFC, respectively. The official changelog confirms that the update only contains security fixes with no additional goodies.

The Galaxy S24 series is expected to receive a bigger update in August. It should bring new Galaxy AI features and camera enhancements from One UI 6.1.1 that debuted with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 last week. The update may also contain bug fixes and performance improvements for existing camera features. The Galaxy S23 series will also receive a few compatible features from the new foldables, including so camera goodies.

In the meantime, Samsung is updating the US versions of its 2023 flagships to the July security patch. The update is rolling out to carrier-locked units with the build number S91*USQS4CXE9. The Galaxy S23 FE is getting the July SMR with firmware versions S711USQS5CXF8 and S711U1UES5CXF9. That for the Galaxy S21 FE is G990USQSCGXF5. These devices should soon receive the update widely on all wireless networks across the nation.

Alongside the aforementioned S series devices, Samsung’s July update is rolling out to a bunch of other phones in various global markets. The Galaxy Z Fold 5, Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Fold 3, Galaxy Z Flip 3, Galaxy S20 FE, Galaxy A73, Galaxy A52s, and Galaxy A35 are among those receiving the latest security patch.
