Google to face investigation over deleted chat history

0
[ad_1]

Google may face investigation over its deleted chat history, as Federal Judge James Donato says he plans to look into the matter. Over the past several weeks and months, Google has been locked in court trials. The company recently wrapped up its trial against the DOJ on November 16 in a lawsuit that alleges the company used exclusive deals to operate a monopoly in the search market. A ruling on that is expected sometime in 2024.

It’s also in court against Epic, which alleges Google has operated a monopoly with the Play Store by preventing fair competition for alternative app stores. In both trials, testimony revealed that Google employees, including CEO Sundar Pichai, had purposely enabled an “auto-delete” option for internal chats to keep information out of a courtroom. Donato calls Google’s act of destroying evidence “a frontal assault on the fair administration of justice” and that it “undercuts due process.”

Donato also states that he won’t force the jury via mandatory inference instruction to factor in that Google’s chat deletion could have hurt the company in the case. He says the jury “may” infer this was a possibility. But that he won’t make that decision for them. Instead, Donato plans to pursue the matter outside the bounds of this particular trial.

Donato may pursue a Google investigation over deleted chat history on his own time

Donato doesn’t appear to be leaving anything on the table. While he won’t continue to pursue the matter as part of this particular trial, he won’t be letting it go.

“I’m going to get to the bottom of who is responsible,” Donato said when referencing Google’s actions. He continued by confirming that it would be separate from the current trial. But he assures Google and everyone else in the courtroom that the time will come.

Epic and Google must discuss potential settlements

Today’s trial hearing also revealed that Judge Donato has ordered both companies to discuss potential settlements. Neither company has tried to settle. But they will be forced to sit down and try to hash things out. In hopes that an agreement can be reached. It’s an interesting turn of events. Especially considering Donato’s perseverance in investigating Google’s actions to potentially obstruct evidence.

A ruling on the case is expected to be made by December 11. So Google and Epic will have to sit down before that time and try to settle. There’s no guarantee of how those talks will go. However, it wouldn’t be surprising if either company was unable or unwilling to settle even after discussions.

Epic once reportedly refused a deal from Google to bring Fortnite to the Play Store. And Google isn’t likely to concede any special treatment to Epic over Play Store fees.

Zoom Rooms’ potential threat of meeting hijack gets fixed

0
[ad_1]

Zoom, the popular video conferencing platform, recently faced a significant security threat that could have potentially exposed users to data breaches and unauthorized access. Cybersecurity researchers from AppOmni discovered a vulnerability in Zoom Rooms, a feature designed to facilitate collaboration among team members in different physical locations.

The flaw, identified in June 2023, revolved around the way Zoom Rooms created service accounts for meetings and whiteboards. When a Zoom Room is initiated, the platform automatically generates a service account associated with the user’s email.

The issue arose because Zoom follows a predictable pattern in assigning email addresses to these service accounts, typically in the format of rooms_<account ID>@companycomain.com. For instance, if a user had a Gmail address, Zoom would create a corresponding email like rooms_<account ID>@gmail.com.

Researchers exploited the predictability of the assigned email address

Exploiting this pattern, researchers were able to create a valid email inbox for a Zoom Room. They signed up for Zoom and received an activation link in the inbox. Upon activation, Zoom inadvertently logged the researchers into the victim’s Zoom tenant as the service account. This granted the researchers the status of a team member, allowing lateral movement across the tenant.

As Zoom Rooms usually start with two licenses, the exploit provided the researchers with visibility into all users within an organization. They could potentially hijack meetings as hosts, access all whiteboards, and gather sensitive information, posing a severe security risk.

The only requirement for executing this attack was knowledge of the victim’s email address. Given the prevalence of email breaches, this information is relatively accessible. Additionally, TechRadar reports that malicious insiders within the same Zoom Room could also exploit the vulnerability, raising concerns about the potential for unauthorized access and data theft.

Zoom acted promptly to resolve the security threat

AppOmni promptly reported their findings to Zoom, leading the video conferencing company to take immediate action. In response, Zoom swiftly issued a fix, eliminating the ability to create Zoom Room accounts.

In summary, the collaborative efforts of cybersecurity researchers and the swift response of Zoom have prevented a potential security threat.

Digital Transformation in the Financial Industry: The Role of Fintech

0
[ad_1]

The financial industry is undergoing a digital transformation. Digital technology has been around for decades, but it’s only recently that it has become an integral part of how we conduct our finances. Many people now do most of their banking online or through mobile apps and that number is growing every year.

This isn’t surprising when you consider how much money can be saved by using technology instead of going into a branch or calling customer service over the phone (not to mention how much time is saved). But what exactly does this mean for the future?

Fintech companies are providing innovative solutions to help customers save money and manage risk more effectively than ever before; they’re also fueling innovation within traditional banks themselves by creating new products based on customer feedback or challenging existing models with newer ones that might be better suited

The Emergence and Evolution of Fintech

Fintech is a broad term that encompasses many different technologies and business models. It has been around for decades, but it has grown in popularity in recent years. Fintech is a global industry with investors across the world.

Fintech companies are using technology to provide financial services at cheaper costs than traditional banks and other institutions, and they’re having an impact on how we think about money today.

Technological Advancements Driving Fintech Innovation

Technological advancements are driving fintech innovation, with artificial intelligence and machine learning at the forefront. These technologies are making it possible for companies to analyze large amounts of data in real-time, allowing them to make faster and better decisions.

For example, AI can help banks predict customer behaviour based on past transactions or use sentiment analysis to identify potential fraudsters before they commit crimes. For more information on cutting-edge technologies in the financial industry, you can explore top insurance software development companies here.

Blockchain technology has also become an important part of fintech innovation because it allows users to exchange value without relying on centralized institutions like banks or governments (although some argue that this could lead to an increase in trust issues).

Fintech Startups and Disruption: Case Studies

In this section, we will look at how fintech startups are disrupting the financial industry. We’ll also take a look at some of the most successful cases of disruption and their impact on both banks and consumers.

The importance of fintech startups in digital transformation cannot be understated. They have been responsible for creating new business models that provide better services at lower costs than traditional providers, as well as innovating ways to connect people who were previously excluded from mainstream finance because of their location or income levels.

Collaboration and Integration: Traditional Financial Institutions and Fintech

Collaboration and integration between traditional financial institutions and fintech companies can bring numerous benefits to both parties and the customers they serve. Here are some key points to consider:

Fintech companies are known for their ability to leverage new technologies and develop innovative solutions. By collaborating with fintech firms, traditional financial institutions can gain access to these cutting-edge technologies, allowing them to enhance their product offerings, streamline processes, and provide better services to their customers.

  • Enhanced Customer Experience:

Fintech companies often prioritize user-centric design and user experience. By integrating fintech solutions into their operations, traditional financial institutions can improve their digital channels, making transactions faster, more convenient, and more user-friendly for their customers. This can lead to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Collaboration with fintech companies can help traditional financial institutions tap into new customer segments. Fintech firms often have a strong presence in niche markets or among tech-savvy individuals who prefer digital banking solutions. By integrating fintech services, traditional financial institutions can expand their market reach and attract new customers.

Fintech solutions, such as automation and artificial intelligence, can significantly improve operational efficiency for traditional financial institutions. By integrating these technologies, banks and other financial institutions can streamline their processes, reduce costs, minimize errors, and enhance risk management.

Traditional financial institutions are subject to rigorous regulatory requirements. Collaborating with fintech companies can help them address these compliance challenges more effectively. Fintech firms often have expertise in regulatory technology (RegTech) and can assist in implementing robust compliance and risk management systems, thereby strengthening customer trust.

Collaboration between traditional financial institutions and fintech companies can create mutually beneficial partnerships. Fintech firms can gain access to traditional institutions’ extensive customer base and infrastructure, while traditional institutions can benefit from fintech expertise and innovation. This partnership can result in the development of new products, services, and business models beneficial to both parties.

Overall, collaboration and integration between traditional financial institutions and fintech companies have the potential to bring significant advantages, including innovation, improved customer experience, expanded market reach, operational efficiency, compliance, and relevant partnerships. It is an exciting opportunity for both sectors to leverage each other’s strengths and create a more robust and customer-centric financial ecosystem.

Regulatory Challenges and Compliance in the Fintech Era

This is a topic that will be covered in depth in this guide, but let’s go over the basics here. Fintech has been around for quite some time now, so it’s safe to say that regulators have had plenty of time to catch up with the new technology and create regulations surrounding it. However, many feel as though these regulations are still not enough to keep up with how fast fintech startups are growing and they may be right!

One reason for this is that it can take years before someone becomes an expert at something; therefore it makes sense that regulators would need more time than just two or three years (which seems like ages when dealing with this kind of thing).

Financial Inclusion: Fintech’s Role in Bridging Gaps

As we’ve discussed, financial inclusion is one of the biggest challenges facing the global community. More than 2 billion people do not have access to basic financial services, which means that they cannot save money or borrow money when they need it. This leaves them vulnerable to poverty and hunger, as well as other issues related to being unbanked (including higher interest rates on consumer loans).

Financial technology (fintech) companies are helping tackle this problem by making it easier for people from all walks of life whether they live in rural areas or urban centers to get access to affordable credit products like loans and savings accounts.

Conclusion

We hope that this article has given you a better understanding of fintech, its role in digital transformation, and how it can help your organization adapt to changing trends in finance. Fintech is an exciting field with many opportunities for growth and innovation, but it also presents challenges due to its rapid pace of change and disruption of traditional business models.

Galaxy S24 Specs, Features and Colors Leaked

0
[ad_1]

In the last couple of years, Samsung has released its Galaxy S series in January. And we expect the same thing to happen in 2024. Some recent rumors floating around are pointing to a January 17 announcement, which would likely mean that the phones will start shipping by the end of January. However, you don’t have to wait long to hear about the specs to expect with these new smartphones, as there is a huge leak that just surfaced.

Thanks to Windows Report, we know just about everything to expect from the Galaxy S24, S24 Plus, and S24 Ultra.

The Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus will come in four colors: Onyx Black, Marble Gray, Cobalt Violet, and Amber Yellow. The Galaxy S24 will maintain a smaller screen, measuring in at 6.2 inches with an FHD+ resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It’ll get the Exynos 2400 processor with a 4,000mAh capacity battery inside. While the Galaxy S24 Plus model will come with a larger 6.7-inch QHD+ resolution this year, it’ll still remain with a 120Hz refresh rate. The Plus model actually gets the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with a larger 4,900mAh capacity battery. With what the report lists as “Super Fast Charging 2.0”, hopefully, that means we’ll get faster than 25W charging this year.

The cameras are the same on both models, with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10-megapixel telephoto at 3x optical zoom. Both also use a 12-megapixel front camera.

Interestingly, the memory will differ here, with 8GB for the Galaxy S24 and 12GB for the Galaxy S24 Plus. And again, on storage, things are a bit different, with the Galaxy S24 having 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models, while the Galaxy S24 Plus will get 256GB and 512 GB.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra will be the most powerful smartphone in 2024

Apparently, the design won’t change much on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The only real change here will be the curved display, which is out for a new flat display. This is something we’ve been wanting Samsung to do for years. And it’s finally coming next month.

Specs-wise, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is shaping up exactly as you’d expect. This includes a 6.8-inch QHD+ resolution display with an Adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. It’ll be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor inside, with relatively the same cameras as the Galaxy S23 Ultra, but slightly refreshed.

Samsung’s popular 200-megapixel camera will remain as the main sensor here. With a 12-megapixel ultrawide, a 10-megapixel telephoto for 3x optical zoom, and finally, a 50-megapixel telephoto camera for 5x optical zoom. On the front, Samsung is sticking with its tried-and-true 12-megapixel camera.

Much like its predecessor, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will stick with a base storage of 256GB. There will also be 512GB and 1TB options available. All three storage options will come with 12GB of RAM next year, too.

Contrary to previous leaks, the Galaxy S24 Ultra will stick with a 5000 mAh capacity battery. And it will also have Super Fast Charging 2.0, like the Galaxy S24 Plus. The Galaxy S24 Ultra will also come with WiFi 7, as we recently saw from its stop at the FCC.

Expect loads of AI injected into the Samsung Galaxy S24

AI is the new buzzword that everyone is using, and Samsung won’t be left out. The company is expected to add AI for a ton of its apps and features. According to information obtained from the Windows Report, it’ll include some rather exciting capabilities. This includes the ability to translate messaging apps in real time. And this will work with over a dozen languages.

Samsung is also looking to incorporate generative AI that will help you edit and improve your photos. Which sounds a whole lot like what Magic Editor can do on the Google Pixel 8 series. And finally, Samsung is expected to use AI to offer enhanced search capabilities. This means you can highlight any given item on an image and find additional information about it.

We’re less than two months out from Samsung actually announcing the Galaxy S24 series, so rumors and leaks are coming in hot and heavy right now. But the wait isn’t going to be long.

Cyberattack Defaces Israeli-Made Equipment at US Water Agency, Brewing Firm

0
[ad_1]

The targets included the Equipment used by the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania and Brewmation, a New York-based company specializing in turnkey brewing and distilling equipment.

U.S. officials have attributed a cyberattack on the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, to the hacktivist group Cyber Av3ngers. This is the same group that previously claimed responsibility for targeting the Israeli oil refinery giant BAZAN with a series of DDoS attacks (distributed denial-of-service attacks).

According to Check Point Research and Google’s Mandiant reports, this group is believed to have ties to the Iranian government.

In its cyber attack on the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2023, Cyber Av3ngers defaced the equipment used by the authority with a message of their own, stating that they were targeting Israeli-made equipment. Reportedly, the equipment that was targeted and disabled was manufactured by the Israeli company Unitronics.

Hackread.com can exclusively confirm that the group also targeted Brewmation, a New York-based company specializing in turnkey brewing and distilling equipment. The company’s brewery control system experienced a cyber attack over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The cyberattack on the equipment used by Bewmation saw the same deface image that was left by the hackers on the equipment used by the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa.

Evidence suggests that the hackers deliberately targeted the facility due to the equipment’s Israeli origin. A photo from the targeted organization shows a message from the hackers that read, Every equipment ‘made in Israel’ is Cyber Av3ngers legal target.”

The attack targeted a device used to control water levels at the authority’s tanks automatically. However, it did not disrupt water service to customers. Still, the incident has raised concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber threats.

Cybersecurity experts had warned that the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas may cause a spike in cyberattacks in Western Pennsylvania and other regions. The Western Pennsylvania All Hazards Fusion Center issued an alert warning that anti-Israel threat actors could target any critical infrastructure or key resources in the region.

In response to the attack, area representative Congressman Chris Deluzio has called for a full investigation into this incident while emphasizing the need for all organizations, including small local governments and private actors, to step up their cybersecurity systems. Deluzio noted that implementing sophisticated cyber defences is the need of the day.

Three Pennsylvania lawmakers have urged for an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice to warn other water and sewage treatment utilities about possible threats and risks involved with vulnerable industrial control systems.

In a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, Senators John Fetterman and Bob Casey, along with Representative Chris Deluzio, raised concerns over the vulnerable nature of drinking water and other critical infrastructure.

They emphasized the need to protect these systems from foreign adversaries and terrorist organizations, urging the DoJ to investigate the incident thoroughly and also calling for a broader assessment of the nation’s cybersecurity posture.

Federal agencies are also involved in the investigation. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a statement revealing that it is aware of the intrusion and is working with partners to understand the situation and provide support. The FBI did not confirm or deny that an investigation was underway.

The Aliquippa Water Authority chairman, Matthew Mottes, stated that federal officials informed him of more hacking attempts from the same threat actor, targeting four of their utilities and an aquarium.

Cyber Av3ngers claimed to have hacked 10 water treatment stations in Israel on October 30 in a separate development. It is unclear whether any equipment was shut down due to these attacks.

Cyber Av3ngers on Telegram

Nevertheless, the cyberattack highlights the capabilities and skills hacktivists possess to deliver their message to adversaries. Cyber Av3ngers vow to continue targeting Israel and any company or business utilizing equipment manufactured or provided by the State of Israel.

Microsoft ends support for ‘Defender Application Guard for Office’

0
[ad_1]

Microsoft has announced it is ending support for its Defender Application Guard for Office. The company released a list of “deprecated features”, which included Application Guard for Office. This security feature has only been mainstream since 2021, and its very short life has already come to a close as Microsoft suggests alternatives. There’s no cause for alarm, however, as it is a relatively simple task switching to alternative safeguards.

What did Application Guard do

Many users are probably not even aware of Defender Application Guard for Office. The news of it not receiving support is likely the first time many have heard of it. However, it played a vital role for Office users and almost all of them interacted with it often. Made available to Office 365 users in 2021, Defender Application Guard for Office helped detect and isolate potentially dangerous files.

Defender Application Guard warns users when they are about to open a file it considers malicious. It also goes a step further and opens these files in an isolated virtual sandbox. This means these files, if dangerous, would fail to infect the host system. Said virtual sandbox is a cut above ordinary virtual machines. These “Hyper-V enabled” containers are running on a virtual machine themselves, adding an extra layer of security and anonymity.

Microsoft suggests alternatives

In the list that Microsoft mentioned ending support for Defender Application Guard, the company also suggested alternatives users should adopt. For starters, Microsoft recommends users switch to Microsoft Defender for Endpoint. Defender for Endpoint is an enterprise endpoint security platform. It lets enterprise networks detect, prevent, and respond to cyberattacks and threats. It also protects endpoint devices like laptops, phones, and routers from these threats.

Microsoft also recommends users adopt Protected View. A very common security feature, Protected View opens potentially dangerous files in a read-only format. Editing can be enabled by the user in a safer environment thanks to Protected View. Lastly, Microsoft told users to get Windows Defender Application Control. With this, admins can specify in detail which applications, scripts, and libraries are allowed to run on the system. Anything not on an approved list will be prevented from executing on the system.

Defender Application Guard for Office fulfilled a very specific role for a very specific niche. Ending support for it seems to indicate Microsoft might be looking to move towards a broader offering of services that package many features together. Protected View and Application Control are good precautions, but it is obvious that Defender for Endpoint is now expected to replace Application Guard for Office.

WhatsApp is about to make screen sharing much better

0
[ad_1]

Sharing your device’s screen is one of the best ways for you to collaborate with your colleagues. If you’re giving a presentation or just sharing a new photo, it’s extremely easy and convenient to do so through screen sharing. While it’s a useful tool, it looks like the company is making it better. WhatsApp might let you share audio while screen sharing.

This news comes from an APK deep-dive performed by Android Authority. The publication found code hidden within the latest beta version of the app that hints at this feature coming eventually. Since we’re talking about a hidden unannounced feature, you’ll want to take this news with a grain of salt. There’s no guarantee that WhatsApp will release this feature to the public. Just keep your fingers crossed.

WhatsApp could let you share your device’s audio while screen sharing

WhatsApp has a robust beta testing program that’s full to the brim with people. Many of them get access to new and experimental features that the company is working on. In the latest beta version of the app, folks at Android Authority found some strings pointing to the ability to stream audio along with video when screen sharing.

The strings read:

<code>New: Listen to video and music audio together
When you screen share, audio you play on your device will also be shared with people in your call.</code>

That’s a pretty straightforward description, and it’s good news for people who constantly share their screens. If you’re trying to share a video with your friends through the app, then they’ll be able to hear what you’re listening to as well.

Right now, we don’t know when or if WhatsApp plans on bringing this feature to the public. It’s likely that the company will, as it’s a pretty sought-after feature. Since it was discovered in the beta version of the app, it might be a while before you can see for yourself.

both companies ordered to have settlement talks

0
[ad_1]

The war between Epic Games and Google is still raging on, but it’s starting to reach its conclusion. We’re now in the final days of the legal battle with the closing statements set to take place on December 11. Before the gavel is brought down, both companies are ordered to sit down and talk. According to a new report, the court ordered Google and Epic Games to hold settlement talks.

If you don’t recall, Epic Games is suing Google for its alleged monopoly over the Android app market. The Google Play Store is, obviously, the go-to place to download Android apps, regardless of the other app stores out there.

Not only that, but Epic Games doesn’t want to pay the exorbitant 30% fee for using Google’s billing system. After battling it out for years, the Fortnite maker has laid out its demands for Google to abide by. It listed three demands, but one was tossed out by the court.

Firstly, Epic wants it and other developers to be able to open their own app stores on Android without any restrictions. Secondly, it wants the freedom to use its own billing system on the Play Store. Lastly, it wants the court to keep Google from developing any workarounds to side-step its demands.

The last demand was tossed out by the court. Judge Donato told Epic that this was too broad of a demand. If Google develops a workaround that Epic doesn’t like, then it should return to the court. “If you have a problem, you come back,”.

The demands are set, and Google will have until December 4th to formally respond to these demands. We’re still waiting to see if Google will agree or toss out the other two demands.

Google And Epic are ordered to have settlement talks

Many large cases like these end in settlements. One thing that the court realized was that, throughout this process, neither of the companies tried to settle. Well, this is what both companies are ordered to do. The court is putting both arguing children in the playpen until they can work out their differences.

We’re not sure if there’s a definite date for the talks, but they must be held before the judge gives his final verdict. The talks are slated to happen between four people. Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic, is one while a Google representative will fill the second seat. The remaining seats belong to each company’s respective attorney.

At this point, we don’t know if the talks will end in a settlement, no settlement, or a four-way fistfight. We’ll need to wait for the results. Depending on the verdict, the future of Google’s dominance over the Android app market could change immensely.
