Most Popular Websites Still Allow Users To Have Weak Passwords

The latest analysis shows that tens of millions of people are creating weak passwords on three of the four most popular websites in the world, which do not fulfill the minimum required standards.

Researchers also found that 12% of websites had no limitations at all for the length of passwords. They made this discovery using a first-of-its-kind automated tool that can evaluate a website’s password creation regulations.

This automated tool for assessment was developed by Ph.D. student Suood Al Roomi and assistant professor Frank Li of Georgia Tech’s School of Cybersecurity and Privacy to examine every website in the Google Chrome User Experience Report (CrUX). This database contains one million web pages.

Outdated Password Practices Are Widespread

This tool was effective on over 20,000 websites in the database and indicated that many websites:

  • Permit very short passwords
  • Avoid blocking common passwords.
  • Use outdated specifications such as complicated characters.

Additionally, the researchers found that the majority of sites keep up with 2004 regulations, while only a few fully follow standard guidelines.

The study found that over half of the websites accepted passwords with six characters or fewer and that 75% did not enforce the suggested minimum of eight characters. Approximately 12% had no length restrictions, while 30% did not allow special characters or spaces.

Just 28% of the websites under investigation had password block lists in place, leaving thousands of websites open to hacker attempts to access users’ accounts by using popular passwords, a technique known as ‘password spraying.’

Al Roomi and Li observed the consistency of length constraints and needs for numerals, capital and lowercase characters, special symbols, combinations, and starting letters with the aid of machine learning.

Additionally, they may check to determine if websites allowed dictionary words or passwords known to have been compromised.

“As a security community, we’ve identified and developed various solutions and best practices for improving internet and web security. It’s crucial that we investigate whether those solutions or guidelines are actually adopted in practice to understand whether security is improving in reality”, said Li.

Redmi K70 series announced with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 120W charging & more

Xiaomi has announced its new Redmi handsets. The Redmi K70 series is official, and it consists of the Redmi K70, K70 Pro, and K70E smartphones. The cheapest variant is the Redmi K70E, it’s inferior to its siblings.

All three phones are sticking to the same design language, pretty much. The major difference you’ll see when you compare all three phones is the under-display camera on the Redmi K70 Pro. The other two phones include a display camera hole.

All three are made out of metal and glass, and are the same in terms of size. They look basically the same other than the front-facing camera. Their bezels are very thin, and all the physical buttons sit on the right-hand side.

You will notice that they have flat sides, and their backplates are curved towards the sides, a little. The camera island on the back is large on all three devices, as that’s a design choice. It spans across the top of the phone’s back side.

The Redmi K70 & K70 Pro specifications

Now, we’ll talk about the Redmi K70 and K70 Pro specs together, as they are quite similar. The Redmi K70E specs will be covered separately later in the article.

The Redmi K70 and K70 Pro both utilize a 6.67-inch 3200 x 1440 AMOLED display. That display has a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 2,160Hz instant touch sampling rate. A 3,840Hz PWM high-frequency dimming is also a part of the package. The peak brightness here is 4,000 nits, while HDR10+ and Dolby Vision are also supported.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 fuels the Redmi K70 Pro, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is included inside the Redmi K70. The Redmi K70 Pro goes up to 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 flash storage. The Redmi K70 goes up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and 512GB of UFS 4.0 flash storage.

120W charging is supported on both smartphones, while the two of them have the same main camera

A 5,000mAh battery is included inside both smartphones, and both of them support 120W wired charging. Wireless charging is not supported. An in-display fingerprint scanner can be found inside both phones, and the same goes for an IR blaster.

Both phones have a 50-megapixel main camera with Light Fusion 800 sensor, and an f/1.6 aperture. OIS and EIS are supported. The other two cameras are different, though. The Redmi K70 Pro includes a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (OmniVision OV13B10 sensor, f/2.2 aperture), and a 50-megapixel telephoto unit (2x optical zoom, OmniVision OV50D40 sensor). The Redmi K70, on the other hand, has an 8-megapixel secondary camera (ultrawide, 120-degree FoV, f/2.2 aperture), and a 2-megapixel macro camera (f/2.4 aperture). A 16-megapixel selfie camera is included inside both phones.

Stereo speakers are also a part of the package, and the same goes for Dolby Atmos. Bluetooth 5.4 is also included. The two phones measure 160.86 x 74.95 x 8.21mm. They weigh 209 grams. The Redmi K70 Pro Automobili Lamborghini SQUADRA CORSE weighs 211 grams, and looks a bit different, as shown below.

The Redmi K70E specifications

The Redmi K70E includes a 6.67-inch 2712 x 1220 OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It has the same instant touch sampling rate as the other two phones, and the same goes for PWM high-frequency dimming. This display has a maximum brightness of 1,800 nits.

The MediaTek Dimensity 8300-Ultra fuels this smartphone, and it comes in 12GB and 16GB LPDDR5X versions. Three UFS 4.0 storage options are available, up to 1TB in size.

This handset supports 90W charging

There are two nano SIM card slots included here, and an in-display fingerprint scanner too. You’ll find an IR blaster at the top, and stereo speakers are a part of the package as well. Dolby Atmos is supported. A 5,500mAh battery sits inside of this phone, while 90W wired charging is supported.

A 64-megapixel main camera (OmniVision OV64B, OIS, EIS) sits on the back. An 8-megapixel ultrawide unit (120-degree FoV, f/2.2 aperture) is also included, as is a 2-megapixel macro camera (f/2.4 aperture). A 16-megapixel camera sits on the front.

The Redmi K70E measures 160.45 x 74.34 x 8.05mm, while it weighs 198 grams.

Models & pricing

The Redmi K70 Pro pricing starts at CNY3,299 ($465), and goes up to CNY4,399 ($621). The K70 pricing starts at CNY2,499 ($352), and goes up to CNY3,399 ($480). The Redmi K70E can be purchased for CNY1,999 ($282), and the most expensive model costs CNY2,599 ($366). Do note that the devices will cost more globally, no matter what sub-brand they come in. It’s possible that some of these devices will be re-released as ‘POCO’ phones.

Nvidia’s CEO paints a scary picture of AI in just 5 years

When you think of AI technology in the near future, how do you feel? Optimistic? Worried about your job? Frightened for the human race? Either emotion is valid, as AI technology is advancing at a rapid pace. Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, thinks that, in just five years, AI technology will be pretty much on level with human beings.

Right now, even though generative AI has been in the mainstream for about a year, we’re all still pondering and pontificating about the future of AI and of the human race. Generative AI is fire, and we’re the cavemen about to learn its constructive and destructive potential. So, at this point, the jury is out on whether we should continue AI development. However, the genie is out of the bottle; mankind is going full-throttle with AI development.

AI could catch up to humans in five years, according to Jensen Huang

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang spoke during the New York Times’ DealBook summit. During the interview, he spoke briefly about the drama that went down with OpenAI. However, the bulk of what he spoke about was the future of AI technology. Right now, companies are working on pushing the technology to the level of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).

In order for an AI to be considered AGI, it will need to pass certain human intelligence tests to prove that it’s on par with a human brain. Well, Huang said during the summit that “within the next five years, you’re going to see, obviously, AIs that can achieve those tests.” When that happens, we’ll have our first AGI.

The future is still uncertain

Obviously, unless he has a crystal ball at Nvidia headquarters, we can’t take what he said as absolute fact. We don’t know what the future holds for AI technology. However, AI as smart as a human doesn’t seem to be out of the cards. In just a year, we’ve seen a massive jump in what AI can do. The chips that companies are training their AIs on are getting major boosts in power.

Just recently, Amazon announced its new Trainium2 chips that quadruple the processing power of its predecessors. Google’s Tensor G3 chip has foundation models embedded into it. Chips are getting better. Not only that, but we’re seeing a new generation of chips built around AI technology.

Speaking of chips in the AI space, Nvidia is one of the leaders. It’s the go-to company for GPUs to train models. According to the report, the company reported a net income of $680 million in Q3 2022. In Q3 2023, the company reported a staggering $9.24 billion! That’s more than 13-fold. Undoubtedly, the momentum that AI technology has gained won’t be slowing down any time soon.

OnePlus 12 display’s max brightness revealed… and it’s way up there

OnePlus and BOE announced a new display that will be used on the OnePlus 12 a while back, the BOE X1. BOE shared some details about that display, but not everything. Well, now, OnePlus confirmed that the OnePlus 12 display will be immensely bright, its max brightness is way, way up there.

To be more specific, the OnePlus 12 will offer a maximum display brightness of 4,500 nits. That, I believe, is the brightest level yet, on any smartphone. The companies are constantly trying to up one another in this regard.

Do note that you realistically won’t reach that level… ever. It’s impossible to reach it in manual mode, and even in auto mode, chances you’ll never get that high. It’ll technically be possible, though.

More importantly, this means that you will never have problems with display brightness. The OnePlus 12’s display will be the opposite of dim, and it should be clearly visible in basically any scenario, even in direct sunlight.

The phone will launch on December 5, and its design was recently confirmed

As a reminder, the OnePlus 12 will become official in China on December 5. The phone is confirmed to launch globally in January. If the latest information is to be believed, the phone will arrive to global markets on January 23.

OnePlus already showed us the device, thanks to a ton of images, and even a video teaser. There’s not much left to hide at this point, as the phone’s specifications have been leaking out for a while too.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 will fuel the OnePlus 12, while the phone is tipped to include a 5,400mAh battery. 100W wired charging is tipped, and OnePlus confirmed the return of wireless charging too. The phone will almost certainly support 50W wireless charging.

The bezels around the display will be quite thin, and this time around the hole punch will be placed in the middle, rather than on the left side. An IR blaster inclusion was also confirmed by the company.

Big leak details Alienware’s 2024 laptops and accessories

Every year Dell and its gaming brand Alienware reveal a slate of exciting new products such as laptops and monitors at CES, and 2024 is no different. A new leak has detailed a bunch of upcoming products from both companies. The information is not all-encompassing, of course. There’s still some stuff the leak doesn’t seem to cover. Such as cost and component specifics. The leak does however mention that all of these laptops should launch on January 11.

That being said there is quite a bit of information to sink your teeth into if you enjoy seeing the new stuff Dell and Alienware have to offer. Windowsreport notes that both Dell and Alienware will have new laptops to feature at CES next year. Additionally, Alienware will be revealing new monitors and new accessories that include a gaming keyboard and a gaming mouse.

Dell for its part will be releasing an updated lineup of its premium XPS laptops. All of them will be outfitted with more powerful CPUs and GPUs, but the standout appears to be the XPS 16. This laptop will reportedly feature Intel Core Ultra CPUs and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40-series GPUs. Dell is also said to be releasing new XPS 13 and XPS 14 models. Both of these will have graphics from NVIDIA and CPUs from Intel as well.

Alienware laptops for 2024 don’t appear to have any design changes

Alienware is apparently set to unveil a powerful refresh of its gaming laptops at CES, but it doesn’t look like much if anything has changed with the design. In fact, the design seems almost entirely the same as Alienware’s ‘Legend 3’ design language. Legend 3 was revealed during Alienware’s CES 2023 announcement and was applied to its most recent laptops. And it looks like the company has stuck with this design for the year ahead.

The new laptops purportedly include a refreshed version of the m16 R2. It’ll come powered by an Intel Core Ultra H CPU and RTX GPUs from NVIDIA, likely from the 40-series. Alienware is also expected to include a Stealth Mode on its laptops this coming year that will allow users to scale back the gaming-centric features and effects. This is supposed to be adjustable too. Presumably so the user has some measure of control over how much they want to scale back.

Notably, this is intended to make the laptop appear less flashy and gear its performance more toward productivity purposes.

Alienware’s most premium laptop makes a return

In addition to the m16 R2 Alienware is said to be readying the reveal of the x16 R2. The second generation of its high-end flagship. The x16 R2 should come with many of the same component options as the m16 R2. Including Intel Core Ultra CPUs and NVIDIA’s most powerful graphics cards. And to round things out it looks like the m18 is getting an upgrade as well via the m18 R2. Again, expect NVIDIA’s 40-series GPUs here alongside 14th-gen Intel CPUs providing the main computing power.

Accessories to complete the gaming center

It wouldn’t feel like a proper Alienware CES announcement without some sort of new accessory or monitor to throw in the mix. This year, it looks like Alienware plans to release a new gaming keyboard and gaming mouse bundle for consumers. The bundle will be for the Alienware Pro wireless keyboard and mouse, with the keyboard featuring hot-swappable, RGB backlit keys in a 75% form factor. The mouse meanwhile looks to be a lightweight gaming mouse option geared towards people who want something they can glide across the mat quickly.

That being the case, it seems like it will be marketed toward competitive gamers. Additionally, Alienware seems to be prepping a new set of gaming monitors. These will include an upgraded version of the 32-inch ultrawide QD-OLED with HDMI 2.1 and 4K resolution, and a smaller 27-inch QD-OLED monitor with a faster refresh rate of 360Hz.

Google reaches agreement to pay $74M to Canadian news publishers

Google has pulled its decision to block news links in Canada after reaching an agreement with the government. The Mountain View-based company had previously threatened to remove news links from its search, Google News, and Google Discover pages in response to the Online News Act (Bill C-18) in Canada which comes into effect on December 19. However, the two sides have now come to a deal that will see Google continue to provide Canadian users with access to local news.

The deal is not unlike the agreement that Google made with the Australian government back in 2021, where both it and Meta came to an agreement to invest cash in local news outlets within the country.

The Canadian Minister of Heritage shared the “good news” on X. She wrote, “Following constructive discussions, our government and Google have reached an agreement – they will contribute to the #OnlineNewsAct. We worked hard to make this possible.” She further added, “This Act is good news for journalism, for online platforms, and Canadians.”

Google agreed to pay CAD 100 million per year to news publishers

Google has reached an agreement with Canadian news publishers to pay them about CAD 100 million (roughly $74 million) annually. This figure is substantially lower than the government’s initial estimate of $172 million in annual payments. However, it aligns with Google’s assessment of its financial obligations.

Before finalizing the deal, Google was worried about having to negotiate with each media organization separately. Instead, they will only need to negotiate with a group representing all the media organizations. This could help avoid any disagreements or disputes. However, the deal will be finalized once Google and the media representatives finish their negotiations.

Meta continues to block Canadian news links on its platforms

While Google has reached an agreement with the Canadian government, Meta has remained hesitant to engage in negotiations and continues to block Canadian news links on its platforms. CBC reports, that Meta has not shown any interest in resuming discussions with the government regarding the Online News Act (Bill C-18). Google and Meta are the only two companies that fall under the scope of this legislation.

ClearFake malware now targets iOS users with fake Safari update

In August, cybersecurity researcher Randy McEoin discovered a new type of malware disguised as a software update. He named it “ClearFake”. ClearFake deceives users by exploiting hijacked WordPress sites, leading them to download fake browser updates which then infect their systems with malware. Initially, ClearFake focused on Windows systems, deploying a campaign with a fake Chrome update. Recent findings by security researcher Ankit Anubhav reveal a shift in tactics, with ClearFake now targeting Mac users through a counterfeit Safari update, delivering iOS malware.

ClearFake has used two primary methods to deliver payloads to victims’ systems. Initially, compromised websites were redirected to a Cloudflare worker host, enabling the injection of malicious JavaScript. Security experts detected and easily dismantled this approach because it was hosted on Cloudflare. Subsequently, the group adopted a new strategy, leveraging the security benefits of the blockchain, specifically the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) JS library.

The download of a third-stage payload is initiated by fetching malicious scripts from the blockchain. Exploiting the decentralized nature of the blockchain, attackers are more capable of evading takedowns. The payload is no different, it presents users with fake browser update overlays that lead to installing a malicious executable.

ClearFake uses templates that almost identically mimic legitimate Safari and Chrome updates

Hackers obfuscate code to conceal their malicious intent and evade detection by security measures. By transforming code into a complex, convoluted structure, they slow analysis and make it challenging for security tools to identify and interpret their activities. Originally named for its non-obfuscated JavaScript, ClearFake ironically evolved into a formidable challenge to detect due to its blockchain-based injection method.

According to a report by Malwarebytes, the recent Mac campaign by ClearFake distributes a distinct malware variant, Atomic Stealer. Atomic Stealer offers cybercriminals a comprehensive toolkit, enabling the theft of account passwords, browser data, session cookies, and crypto-wallets. Distributed through a dedicated Telegram channel, the malware author provides web panel access and a disk-image-based installer for $1000 per month.

Disguised as installers for legitimate applications, ClearFake’s payload masquerades as Safari or Chrome updates. Upon downloading Atomic Stealer, the malware mimics another Safari update, prompting users for an admin password for command execution.

Social engineering attacks often disguise malware as software updates or application installers. Again, ClearFake uses Safari and Chrome templates that are nearly identical to those used by Mac and Google. Mac users should be alert against this new social engineering attack attempting to steal sensitive information.

Google Chat gets a new mobile redesign with bottom navigation bar on Android and iOS

Google Chat is rolling out a new bottom navigation bar to its Android and iOS apps, making it easier for users to access key features and stay organized on the go. The new navigation bar provides quick access to Home, Direct Messages, Spaces, and Mentions views, streamlining the overall user experience. Here’s how each of the new views work:
  • The Home view serves as a central hub for all conversations, allowing users to effortlessly stay up-to-date on important threads. A dedicated filter enables users to focus on unread messages, ensuring they don’t miss critical information.
  • The Direct Messages view provides a concise overview of all one-on-one and group conversations, with pinned conversations conveniently placed at the top for easy access.
  • The Spaces view similarly displays a condensed list of all spaces, along with pinned conversations at the front.
  • The Mentions view acts as a personal notification center, highlighting all messages from conversations and spaces where the user has been mentioned. This feature ensures that users are always aware of relevant discussions and can quickly respond to inquiries or participate in ongoing conversations.

The new bottom navigation bar will automatically appear on Android and iOS devices for both admins and end users, eliminating the need for any manual intervention. The rollout will be gradual, taking up to 15 days for all users to receive the update.

Additionally, the new bottom navigation bar is available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts. The gradual rollout will commence today for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains on Android and iOS devices.

These updates follow the expansion of the app’s message bubbles to iOS yesterday, which provide a more cohesive messaging experience across all platforms. Now, with the introduction of the new bottom navigation bar, we see how Google is focused on simplifying navigation and enhancing user productivity within the app as well.

Update now! Chrome fixes actively exploited zero-day vulnerability

Google has released an update to Chrome which includes seven security fixes including one for a vulnerability which is known to have already been exploited.

If you’re a Chrome user on Windows, Mac, or Linux, you should update as soon as possible.

The easiest way to update Chrome is to set it to update automatically, but you have to make sure to close your browser for the update to finish. You can also end up on an older, vulnerable version if something goes wrong—such as an extension stopping you from updating the browser.

So, it doesn’t hurt to check now and then. And now would be a good time, given the severity of the vulnerabilities in this batch. My preferred method is to have Chrome open the page chrome://settings/help which you can also find by clicking Settings > About Chrome (on Windows) or Google Chrome > About Google Chrome (on Mac).

If there is an update available, Chrome will start downloading it. Then all you have to do is relaunch the browser in order for the update to complete.

After the update, the version should be listed as 119.0.6045.199 for Mac and Linux, and 119.0.6045.199/.200 for Windows, or later.

The technical details

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database lists publicly disclosed computer security flaws. The CVE assigned to the actively expoited zero-day is:

CVE-2023-6345: Integer overflow in Skia. Google notes it is aware that an exploit for CVE-2023-6345 exists in the wild. This vulnerability could lead to a range of risks, from crashes to the execution of arbitrary code.

Google never gives out a lot of information about vulnerabilities, for obvious reasons. Access to bug details and links may be kept restricted until a majority of users are updated with a fix, so that interested criminals remain none the wiser.

The fact that the vulnerability is listed with a severity rating of High, indicates that the scope of the flaw is limited to the browser, but this could mean successful exploitation could provide the attacker with information about visited websites and so on.

Skia is an open source 2D graphic library for drawing Text, Geometries, and Images. Skia works across a variety of hardware and software platforms. It serves as the graphics engine for Google Chrome and ChromeOS, Android, Flutter, and many other products.

That’s why users of other Chromium based browsers and software that uses Skia should keep their eyes open for similar updates.
