You may have come across a rumor recently that Samsung will soon rebrand its Exynos lineup of smartphone processors. The company was said to be preparing to replace Exynos with its “Dream Chip” next year or in early 2025. However, this doesn’t seem to be happening. The firm released a statement saying the rumor is not true.

“The rumor on rebranding is not true,” Samsung said in a statement to Android Authority. “For your reference, the mentioned brand name [Dream – ed] is simply an internal project name.” The firm went on to clarify that “all rumors regarding rebranding are not true.” So yes, the Exynos brand isn’t going to be a thing of the past, certainly not anytime soon.

The rumor about Samsung rebranding Exynos chips was passed along by X tipster @OreXda. “Goodbye Exynos. Hello Dream Chip,” they posted, followed by a rendering of a Samsung processor featuring the “Samsung Dream Chip” branding. The source also said that the entire Exynos lineup will be rebranded.

Unsurprisingly, everyone rushed to cover the news, saying Exynos chips would soon be called “Dream Chips.” We held back on reporting on the story because the source doesn’t have a track record of accurate Samsung leaks. They have got a few things wrong in the past. Among other things, they claimed that the firm would launch the Galaxy S22 FE and Galaxy Buds 2 Live and that the Galaxy S23 FE doesn’t exist. All of these claims turned out to be incorrect.

It turns out their latest claim isn’t accurate either. Shortly after the internet went abuzz with reports on their claim, the tipster added that “Dream Chip” is just a codename and not the new branding for Samsung’s processors. They said the chips would go by a different name but not Exynos. However, the Korean firm has now clarified that no rebranding of its Exynos chips is happening.

Samsung may not rebrand the Exynos lineup, but it does have a “Dream Chip” in the works. It is a custom processor for flagship Galaxy devices. The Exynos solutions made by its semiconductor division aren’t customized for Galaxy devices at the development stage. Hence Samsung’s smartphone division is working with its sister firm on a customized solution. The project kicked off in early 2022.

It is going this route because of the power, performance, and thermal issues Exynos chips have had in recent years. Competing Snapdragon solutions from Qualcomm have consistently outperformed the Samsung processors. Unsurprisingly, Galaxy users have had enough and are already questioning its decision to equip the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ with the Exynos 2400 in some markets next year, despite Samsung promising improvements.

Deep down, it knows that customers have lost faith in Exynos. Hence, it is developing a custom solution for flagship models. The “Dream Chip,” as the project is internally called, is expected to debut with the Galaxy S25 series in early 2025, replacing the Exynos 2500. It may not bear the Exynos brand. However, Samsung’s other semiconductor chips will continue to use that brand for the foreseeable future.

According to the US government, Sinbad.io provided its services to the Lazarus group to launder money stolen from numerous data breaches, including those affecting Horizon Bridge, Axie Infinity, and Atomic Wallet.

The official domain of Sinbad.io, a popular Bitcoin “mixer” service has been seized by the United States government. The reason to seize the service given by the US Treasury is that the service apparently, was involved in laundering millions of dollars stolen by North Korean state-based notorious Lazarus group.

Those visiting Sinbad.io can now encounter a homepage uploaded by the government of the United States, announcing the following:

This service has been seized as part of a coordinated law-enforcement action between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Financial Intelligence and Investigation Service (FIOD), and the National Bureau of Investigation taken against the Sinbad.io cryptocurrency mixing service. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has seized the service in accordance with a seizure warrant pursuant to 18 U.S.C. 55 981 and 982 as part of a coordinated international law-enforcement operation.

In a press release dated November 29, 2023, the Treasury accused Sinbad.io of processing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cryptocurrency obtained from various sources. These sources reportedly include large-scale data breaches, notably the $100 million hack affecting Horizon Bridge in June 2022, the $620 million from the Axie Infinity hack in March 2022, and the impact on customers of Atomic Wallet in June 2023.

The US government further claimed that Sinbad.io is not only used for financial crimes but is also a tool employed by cybercriminals for “obfuscating transactions” associated with activities such as sanctions evasion, drug trafficking, purchasing child sexual abuse materials, and other illicit sales on dark web marketplaces.

The Lazarus group, operating under the control of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is infamous for its hacking activities. The US alleges that Sinbad.io serves as a “key money-laundering tool” for the already-sanctioned Lazarus group, which is believed to have stolen a staggering $2 billion worth of digital assets over its operational history.

According to the Q3 2023 Crypto Losses Report by Immunefi, a blockchain cybersecurity firm, the cryptocurrency industry incurred a loss of $685.5 million, marking the highest quarterly loss for the year.

The two largest exploits of the quarter were on Mixin Network and Multichain, which together accounted for 47.5% of all losses. The Lazarus Group, a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group, was responsible for $208.6 million in stolen funds, representing 30% of the total losses.

As for Sinbad.io, it operates on the Bitcoin blockchain and is considered by experts to be a successor to the previously sanctioned crypto mixer, Blender.io. The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned Blender.io on May 6, 2022.

However, ddespite authorities shutting down the original Sinbad.io address, a mirrored site surfaced, registered in Moscow on November 18. A Google search for the original Sinbad.io now shows a copycat site, 1sinbadgo.com, as the second result. Notably, the copycat site, which also boasts a .Onion domain, claims to provide identical services to the original seized domain.

Nevertheless, the sanctions imposed by the US require the blocking and reporting of “all property and interests in property” belonging to Sinbad.io that are within the United States or under the possession or control of US persons, according to the press release.

A few days back, Samsung released the Android 14-based One UI 6.0 update for the Galaxy A53 in Europe. The premium mid-range phone is now receiving a new update in Latin America but it doesn’t bring Android 14. The company is only pushing the latest security patch in the region. The November security update is also available for the Galaxy F41, which isn’t eligible for Android 14.

Samsung plans to update most Galaxy devices to Android 14 before the end of the year. In previous years, it prioritized flagship and high-end models but that isn’t the case this year. For example, the Galaxy A14 has already received the update but the Galaxy S21 FE, Galaxy Z Fold 4, and Galaxy Z Flip 4 are still waiting. The Galaxy A53 has also picked up Android 14 in Europe.

However, in Latin America, Samsung is rolling out a new update to the phone with the latest security patch. Android 14 or One UI 6.0 isn’t part of the package. The Korean firm has already pushed the November SMR (Security Maintenance Release) to the Galaxy A53 in the US, while the new security patch came with Android 14 in Europe. So the big update should be available in the rest of the world soon.

The new update for the 2022 handset in Latin America comes with the firmware build number A536EXXS7CWK3 or A536EXXS7CWK1 depending on the country. Despite varying build numbers, the changelog is the same. The update is all about this month’s security fixes. The November SMR contains fixes for more than 60 vulnerabilities. At least five of those are critical security issues, Google confirmed.

If you are using a Galaxy A53 in the US or Latin America, the next update following the November security patch should bring Android 14 and One UI 6.0. You can check for OTA (over the air) releases by going to Settings > Software update and tapping on Download and install. You may also get a notification when the update reaches your Samsung smartphone.

The Galaxy F41 is also picking up the latest security patch

Samsung’s Galaxy F41, which is pretty much limited to India, Brazil, and Panama, is also picking up the November security update. The new SMR is available in the latter two countries with the build number F415FUBS3CWK2. It should arrive in India shortly. Debuting with Android 10 in October 2020, the device received updates to Android 11 and Android 12. It isn’t eligible for further feature updates.

The plant has a capacity of 3.5 MW. It transfers the generated electricity to a local grid that powers two Google data centers outside of Las Vegas and Reno. Geothermal projects are able to produce energy in all weather conditions. This is a significant advantage over wind and solar farms.

Google has already announced plans for “Operating on 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy by 2030.” The company also claims it reached 64% carbon-free energy globally on an hourly basis in 2022. “If you think about how much we advanced wind and solar and lithium-ion storage, here we are — this is kind of the next set of stuff and we feel like companies have a huge role to play in advancing these technologies,” Michael Terrell, senior director of energy and climate at Google, noted.

Meanwhile, the geothermal plant in Nevada benefits from new methods and technologies to produce energy. According to Terrell, the plant was built on an existing geothermal field with hot rocks but no fluid. Fervo drilled two horizontal wells to push water through fractures in the rock to heat it and generate steam.

The startup also placed fiber optic cables inside the two wells to gather data on how its geothermal system works. Bill Gates and the US Department of Energy currently support Fervo’s technology.

The recently discovered GoTitan botnet is built on the Golang programming language, whereas PrCtrl Rat is a .NET program.

Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs published new research highlighting that a critical Apache ActiveMQ vulnerability tracked as CVE-2023-46604 is under active exploitation by numerous threat actors.

Despite the release of a patch a month ago, FortiGuard researchers continue to identify various malware strains exploiting a known flaw. The persistent exploitation by cybercriminals is concerning, as it allows them to execute arbitrary code on susceptible servers.

FortiGuard Labs’ report has brought attention to several new threats, such as the emergence of a Golang-based botnet named GoTitan and a .NET program called PrCtrl Rat, which possesses remote control capabilities.

Apache recently issued an advisory regarding a vulnerability related to the deserialization of untrusted Apache data. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has categorized this flaw in its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalogue, underscoring its high risk and potential impact.

Researchers claim that this flaw is currently being exploited to distribute various malware strains, including GoTitan, PrCtrl Rat, Kinsing, Silver, and Ddostff.

Silver, designed as an advanced penetration testing tool and red teaming framework, has the capability to support various callback protocols, including TCP, DNS, and HTTP(S). Kinsing malware specializes in supporting cryptojacking operations and can exploit newly discovered security vulnerabilities. On the other hand, Ddostff botnet has been widely employed in Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks since 2016.

GoTitan, a recently uncovered botnet, is coded in the Go programming language. Users typically download this botnet from a malicious URL, and it is currently compatible with x64 architectures. Upon installation, the botnet initiates a system scan and generates a debug file named c.log to document execution time and status.

Following its initial installation, GoTitan replicates itself as .mod within the system, establishing a recurring execution by registering in the Cron. To facilitate communication, the botnet retrieves the Command and Control (C2) IP address. It utilizes this connection to transmit stolen data, encompassing details about the infected device, such as memory, CPU specifications, and architecture information.

According to Fortinet Labs’ blog post, for data transmission, it uses “<==>” as separators. The message starts with “Titan<==>” whereas it communicates with the C2 by sending “FE FE” as a heartbeat signal and waits for further instructions. GoTitan supports ten different methods of launching DDoS attacks.

The exploitation process begins with the attacker establishing a connection to the ActiveMQ server using the OpenWire protocol, commonly on port 61616. Subsequently, the attacker sends a carefully crafted packet, inducing the system to unmarshal a class under their control.

This action prompts the vulnerable server to fetch and load a class configuration XML file from a designated remote URL. Within this malicious XML file, arbitrary code is defined, aiming to execute on the compromised machine.

Technical details and proof-of-concept (PoC) code for the vulnerability are publicly accessible. Users are advised to stay vigilant against active exploits by Sliver, Kinsing, and Ddostf. Prioritizing system updates and patching is crucial, and regular monitoring of security advisories is recommended to effectively mitigate the risk of exploitation.

Galaxy A24 receives Samsung’s Android 14 update

Samsung launched the Galaxy A24 in April this year. The company shipped the phone with Android 13 onboard and promised to push four major Android OS updates to it. The first of those is now here in the form of One UI 6.0, which is based on Android 14. The update is widely available in Asia with the firmware build number A245FXXU3BWK3. Users in other parts of the world can expect to receive it soon.

This is called the Smart Fill feature. Well, Google just enhanced its Smart Fill feature to make Sheets even easier to use. There’s a catch, however.

Google introduced the Smart Fill feature back in 2020. Using AI, the platform can automatically fill in cells based on information that you typically type in that sheet. For example, if you constantly type your email address, then it will pick up on that. Then, once you start typing in your address, it will automatically fill the cell with your address to save you time.

Google Sheets is getting an enhanced Smart Fill feature

So, as you can guess, this enhanced Smart Fill feature uses some powerful generative AI. The typical Smart Fill feature only offers suggestions based on existing data. However, this new feature will be able to generate text as well.

According to the Google Blog post, this new feature will recognize patterns such as: “sentiment classification, combining and generating text, extracting specific text, formatting addresses, structuring phone numbers and emails, condensing text and more.” So, in the style of Google Bard, it will be able to actually create data based on what’s present in the document.

The company gave an example of organizing restaurant reviews. Below, we see a spreadsheet organizing the reviews by their reviews and star rating. After we see the person input star ratings for some of the reviews, the AI was able to get an idea of how the star ratings reflect the review. It reads the reviews and guesses the star rating based on the review.

We see one review that reads “meh”, and the AI gave it a 2-star rating. Another one reads “A little pricey, but it’s worth it for the price”; it gave that review a 4-star rating. That helps speed up the process of adding the information.

That’s just one example of the potential of this feature. There are other applications of this feature, and you’ll be able to discover them when you use it.
