Prior to Wear OS 4, if you wanted to take a screenshot of your smartwatch display you had to go through this whole cumbersome process. It required you going into the app and tapping a few menus to get the screenshot. Which would then be saved in the app that you could then transfer to your photo gallery.

With Wear OS 4 Google is making this simpler and more convenient. And dare I say it, faster. Not by much, mind you. And if I’m being completely honest things could have been even easier than they are now. Even with the improvements. When it comes to taking screenshots on smartwatches, Samsung still proves to be the best with its Galaxy Watch devices. As all you have to do is press and hold both the power button and the action button simultaneously for a few seconds. The screenshot then automatically transfers to your connected to smartphone. Done and done.

With Wear OS 4 on the Pixel Watch 2 it’s not quite that simple, but it is better than before since the process cuts out the requirement of the Wear OS app entirely. If you’re wondering how to take a screenshot on a Wear OS 4 device, like the Pixel Watch 2 (this excludes the Galaxy Watch devices on Wear OS 4 since they have their own method), we’ll walk you through the steps with this guide. The process is pretty quick and there aren’t too many things you need to do. With that’ let’s get into it.

How to take a screenshot on Wear OS 4

For the purposes of this how-to guide, we’ll be using the Pixel Watch 2 as an example. This will also work for the Pixel Watch since it has the same buttons. Keep in mind though that the process may change slightly with other watches. More specifically, another Wear OS 4 watch (once the update eventually rolls out to other watches) may have different buttons you need to press.

Connect your watch to your phone

For starters, you’ll need to make sure your watch is connected to your smartphone. This is a no-brainer since it’s always been this way. But it’s easy to understand that you might think this wouldn’t be needed. As the screenshot could just be taken on the watch with no connected phone and save to the watch’s internal storage. However, this isn’t the case. Screenshots are taken and then sent to a connected phone right away.

Press the digital crown and the recents button at the same time

Once your watch is connected to your phone you’re ready to take screenshots. All you will need to do when you want to take one is press the digital crown and the recents button at the same time. The recents button is more flat and sits just above the digital crown on the watch case. Tap these simultaneously just for a second and you’ll get your screenshot.

Send and share the screenshot on your phone

 

After you take a screenshot you’ll get a notification on your phone from the watch. A menu will pop up asking you where you want to send the screenshot. You’ll have plenty of options here including attaching the screenshot to an SMS message, or sending it through any number of social apps like Discord, Messenger, Google Meet, and even Gmail. Or you can choose to upload it to Google Photos.

Your chosen send method only needs to be selected once

Though you have the option to select a certain method every time, you don’t have to. For example, I chose to have my screenshots uploaded to Google Photos and opted to have this be the send method every time. From now on, every time I take a screenshot it will send directly to Photos. You will still need to upload the photo from the watch to your chosen app each time. So if you choose “upload to Google Photos” like I did, you will still need to upload it there. But you won’t have to select that app anymore. Alleviating one step of the process from the very first time you upload an image.

It’s still a little more tedious than it needs to be. But this is better than it was on Wear OS 3 and Wear OS 3.5. Here’s hoping Google will change it so screenshots upload automatically when grabbed. And that’s it. See, pretty simple and definitely better than it was before.

Some advertisers are already getting access to this new feature and might soon put it to use while placing their ads. Google Meet on Android and iOS rolls out a touch-up tool to help you look your best in meetings

Google Meet users with Workspace accounts will be gaining a highly requested new feature on its mobile app. A new portrait touch-up feature begins to roll out today which lightly enhances your appearance during video calls.

As announced via the Workspace Updates blog, Google will begin a gradual rollout of this feature on mobile devices and will be eventually make it onto the web version as well by the end of the year. The goal for this tool is to enable meeting participants to lightly touch up their appearance from the green room.
Portrait touch-up can be turned on in the meeting settings of the Google Meet app on Android or iOS. Once you start a video call, you can tap the three dots in the bottom right corner of the screen and select “Settings.” From there, scroll down and toggle on “Portrait touch-up” from the “Video” section.

You can also adjust the level of portrait touch-up to your liking. The options are no touch up, “Subtle,” and “Smoothing,” which are each represented by a face icon you can tap on to select. “Subtle” applies very light complexion smooth, under eye lightening and eye whitening, while “Smoothing” applies a heavier level of these same adjustments.

Unfortunately, this feature is not available for personal Google accounts and it is unknown if it will eventually trickle down to all users. As of right now, only users in the following tiers will have it: Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Starter, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Plus, Teaching & Learning Upgrade, Google One and Google Workspace Individual.

Portrait touch-up looks like a great tool to help users look their best during video calls. Whether working from home or attending a virtual meeting, it’s good to know that there are built-in options to help you feel more comfortable on camera.

E-Root Marketplace Admin Extradited to US on Computer Fraud Charge

E-Root sold access to compromised devices and had more than 350,000 compromised computer credentials for sale.

A man from Moldova, Sandu Diaconu (31), has been extradited to the United States to face charges related to his operation of the E-Root marketplace, a website that sold access to compromised computers worldwide.

It’s worth noting that the E-Root marketplace had its domain seized in 2020 following a coordinated operation by international law enforcement authorities.

On October 16, 2023, Diaconu was extradited from the UK and appeared in a federal court in Florida the following day. He is charged with conspiring to commit computer and access device fraud, wire fraud, money laundering, and additional computer and access device fraud. If found guilty on all counts, Diaconu could potentially face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

The indictment alleges that Diaconu served as an administrator of the E-Root Marketplace, a website that provided access to compromised computers for an extended period, including servers owned by American businesses and individuals.

To safeguard the privacy of its administrators, customers, and vendors, the Marketplace implemented certain measures. Through E-Root, buyers could search for compromised computer credentials, such as RDP and SSH access, tailored to their preferences, including criteria like price, location, operating system, and internet service provider.

The Marketplace also utilized Bitcoin and the online payment service Perfect Money to conceal the money paid by customers. The platform additionally offered a conversion service between Bitcoin and Perfect Money through its separate cryptocurrency exchange, which was also seized by the authorities.

According to the DoJ’s press release, the Marketplace had over 350,000 compromised computer credentials available for sale. Victims spanned across multiple industries and regions, including various companies, businesses, and at least one local government agency.

Furthermore, several of the affected companies experienced Ransomware attacks with extensive ramifications for victims, and some of the pilfered credentials listed on the Marketplace were linked to tax fraud schemes involving stolen identities.

The IRS-CI Cyber Crimes Unit in Washington, D.C., and the FBI-Tampa Division jointly spearheaded the investigation. Several key entities played a substantial role in this effort, including the Tampa Field Office of the IRS-Criminal Investigation, the Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs, IRS-CI and FBI International Operations at Mission UK, the United Kingdom’s National Extradition Unit, the United Kingdom’s Central Authority, and the Tampa Field Office of the United States Marshals Service.

This case is a reminder of the growing threat of cybercrime and the importance of international cooperation in combating it. The United States Department of Justice is committed to working with its partners around the world to bring perpetrators of cybercrime to justice.

Cisco IOS XE vulnerability widely exploited in the wild

Researchers have found that a recently disclosed vulnerability in Cisco IOS XE has already rendered thousands of compromised devices.

An authentication bypass affecting Cisco IOS X was disclosed on October 16, 2023. Researchers have found since then that the vulnerability is widely being exploited in the wild to help install implants on affected switches and routers.

Cisco IOS XE is a universally deployed Internetworking Operating System (IOS) that enables model-driven programmability, application hosting, and configuration management, helping to automate day-to-day tasks.

The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) database lists publicly disclosed computer security flaws. The vulnerability at hand is listed as:

CVE-2023-20198 (CVSS score 10 out of 10: Cisco is aware of active exploitation of a previously unknown vulnerability in the web UI feature of Cisco IOS XE Software when exposed to the internet or to untrusted networks. This vulnerability allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to create an account on an affected system with privilege level 15 access. The attacker can then use that account to gain control of the affected system.

What Cisco failed to mention was that thousands of internet-facing IOS XE systems have been implanted. The researchers scanned internet-facing Cisco IOS XE web interfaces and found thousands of implanted hosts.

Cisco has also yet to publish a list of affected devices, but if you are using Cisco switches, routers or Wireless LAN Controllers, you should assume they are vulnerable.

The implants that were found enable the attacker to communicate with the compromised device and use that ability to monitor web traffic, perform lateral movement in the network, or use them for a machine-in-the-middle attack.

The Cisco Talos team discovered there were malicious activities correlated with this vulnerability as early as September 18, 2023.

Mitigation

This vulnerability affects Cisco IOS XE Software if the web UI feature is enabled. The web UI feature is enabled through the ip http server or ip http secure-server commands.

To determine whether the HTTP Server feature is enabled for a system, log in to the system and use the show running-config | include ip http server|secure|active command in the CLI to check for the presence of the ip http server command or the ip http secure-server command in the global configuration. If either command is present, the HTTP Server feature is enabled for the system.

Cisco strongly recommends that customers disable the HTTP Server feature on all internet-facing systems. To disable the HTTP Server feature, use the no ip http server or no ip http secure-server command in global configuration mode. If both the HTTP server and HTTPS server are in use, both commands are required to disable the HTTP Server feature.

While a patch is not yet available, it is advisable to protect your organization by disabling the web interface and removing all management interfaces from the internet immediately. Which is always good advice.

The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added the vulnerability to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, based on the evidence of active exploitation. This means all Federal Civilian Executive Branch Agencies (FCEB) have to verify that instances of Cisco IOS XE Web UI are in compliance with BOD 23-02 (Mitigating the Risk from Internet-Exposed Management Interfaces) and apply mitigations per Cisco’s instructions. For affected products (Cisco IOS XE Web UI exposed to the internet or to untrusted networks), organizations must follow Cisco’s instructions to determine if a system may have been compromised and immediately report positive findings to CISA before October 20,2023.

Organizations should look for unexplained or newly created users on devices as evidence of potentially malicious activity relating to this threat. One method to identify if the implant is present is to run the following command against the device, where the “{DEVICEIP}” portion is a placeholder for the IP address of the device to check:

Note: The above check should use the HTTP scheme if the device is only configured for an insecure web interface. If the request returns a hexadecimal string, the implant is present.

Getting your Android phone repaired is going to get a lot safer

Sending your phone off to be repaired can be scary. You never really know if the person working on your device is able to gain access to your private files. This is why it’s recommended that you factory reset your device before sending it off. Well, that might be a thing of the past, according to a new report. A native repair mode could be coming to Android in the near future.

It’s important that you secure your phone before getting it repaired. Not to fearmonger, but there is the chance that you run across the wrong repair person. Having a PIN or password is a good method to stop potential ingress, but the person repairing your device needs to get into it to test if it’s working. That’s the dilemma that people have to deal with.

Also, not everyone wants to go through factory resetting their device and setting it back up again. The repair mode will definitely come in handy for them.

Google is working on a native Android repair mode

You should be used to this feature if you’re using a Galaxy or Pixel phone. It’s a mode that you put your device in before you take it to be repaired. Again, the repair person needs to have some access to the software in order to make sure that it’s working. So, having your phone locked won’t be the best option.

You’ll use your device’s primary security method to put it into repair mode. While in repair mode, your phone will have what appears to be a fresh install of Android. Your account and all of your data will still be on it, but it will remain hidden away from the user. So, the repair person will be able to interact with the operating system without seeing any of your private content. After you get your phone back, you’ll be able to disable the mode and pick up where you left off.

Manufacturers will be able to disable this mode if they have their own version of the repair mode that they want to use. So, it’s good that Google isn’t forcing them to only use the default. This feature isn’t out just yet, but it’s soon to enter beta testing.

AI in game development is coming, according to Former Assassin’s Creed lead

AI (artificial intelligence) has been leaking into more corners of the tech industry for years, but it didn’t really pick up until the start of the generative AI revolution last year. At this point, no industry is safe, and this includes the AAA gaming industry.  Jade Raymond and Raph Koster agree that AI in game development is inevitable (and they gave a really good reason as to why).

Jade Raymond is the head of Haven Studios, the co-director of Everquest 2, and a former Assassin’s Creed lead producer. She, along with Raph Koster, spoke to Edge Magazine about the subject of AI and its effects on the gaming industry. While there are individuals who oppose the use of AI in AAA gaming, Raymond and Koster seem to feel the opposite.

They feel that AI in AAA game development is inevitable

AI being used in professional development is polarizing, but there’s one thing that the majority of the populus can agree on; it saves money. This is something that the two brought up during the interview. “…the money is still going to drive absolutely everybody to do it”, Koster said, speaking on companies implementing AI into the developmental process, “because otherwise the cost curves are not sustainable”.

We can’t deny that using AI will cut down on the time it takes to make the game. We don’t think it’s going to be used in the modeling or the testing stage, but there are a ton of other tasks on the business side of game development that could get a speed boost thanks to AI.

Manpower

Another thing that Koster brought up was the amount of time and manpower required for games. “AAA games have gone from taking teams of 50 people two years to make to now sometimes taking teams of hundreds of people more than ten years to make”, Raymond said. That’s not an exaggeration. Look at titles like Cyberpunk 2077 or GTA VI. These games are massive in scale, and they have an army of people working on them.

It’s possible that the use of AI could cut down on the number of people needed for a project. The issue with this is that it will cut down on the number of people needed for a project… We’re all worried about AI costing people their jobs.

Regardless

With all of the fears of AI hovering above our heads, both Raymond and Koster remain optimistic about the future of AI in game development. Haven is investing in R&D around generative AI in game development. With how quickly AI is developing, we might have to wait too long to see the fruits of their labor. By that time, who knows if we’ll see more companies invest in AI for game development?

We’re at the edge of a new generation of technology, and we’re already seeing a shift in the tech industry. Let’s just hope that this new age is as positive as they predict.

This app that can’t be deleted could be silently recording your calls and taking screenshots

Cybercriminals are forever finding ways to get into your phone. The latest example is the SpyNote malware, which aims to keep tabs on you and steal sensitive information.

As detailed by cyber security company F-Secure, SpyNote is spyware and is spread through smishing or fake mobile messages. The text messages trick victims into downloading the app.
Although SpyNote doesn’t ask for a lot of permissions, the ones it does requests are similar to permissions that spyware asks for. When it’s first launched, it asks for the BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE permission and when that’s granted, the malware self-approves several additional vital permissions.

The app also tries to hide itself and can’t be found in the app launcher. It doesn’t even show up on the Recents screen. It relies on external triggers such as an SMS to be launched.

SpyNote runs two “diehard” services. Diehard services can’t be shut down easily, neither by the Android system nor by the victim. Whenever an attempt is made to kill the malicious services, they are started back up.

The main purpose of SpyNote is to steal as much data from the victim’s phone as possible and send it back to the attacker’s computer. 

SpyNote collects a dangerous amount of information on users. It can record incoming phone calls and send them to its developers. It is also capable of taking screenshots and sending them to the Command and Control center.

It can even record what you type on your phone, meaning it can steal your credentials and screen unlock password.

There’s only one way to get rid of SpyNote

Unlike most other nefarious apps, getting rid of SpyNote is not as straightforward as deleting it. Since it’s a hidden app, it can’t be located and deleted. Deleting it through the Settings app is not possible either, as the app closes the menu screen whenever the user navigates to the app via Settings. 

And since it runs diehard services, the victim cannot stop them by going to the developer options either. 

The only way someone can get rid of SpyNote is by factory resetting their device and having all their data erased from the phone.

Fake earthquake alert app

According to folks at D3Lab, some bad actors are trying to get Android users to install malware from the SpyNote family by duping them into downloading a fake IT-Alert app. IT-Alert is a public alert system used in Italy to provide information to the public and broadcast alert messages regarding emergencies or disasters.
Threat actors have created a domain of the same name which warns people that an earthquake is expected and asks them to download an app to stay updated on what the situation is like in their area.

Cisco Web UI Vulnerability Exploited Massly, Impacting Over 40K Devices

The US had the most compromised devices (4,659) with a backdoor installed as a result of the Cisco Web UI vulnerability followed by the Philippines (over 3,200).

KEY FINDINGS

Cisco released a security advisory on October 16 to warn users about a critical zero-day privilege escalation vulnerability in its IOS XE Web UI software.

As per Censys, the company tracking the vulnerability, by October 18 the number of infections had increased from the previously reported 34,140 to 41,983 hosts, while 34,140 had backdoor installed

It is tracked as CVE-2023-20198 and has been used to exploit tens of thousands of devices.

The US had the highest number of compromised devices followed by the Philippines.

A critical cybersecurity threat disclosed by Cisco has resulted in mass exploitation of its devices, with the number of impacted systems surpassing 40,000 hosts worldwide. Nonprofit security group Shadowserver has detected over 32,800 devices compromised so far.

On the other hand, Censys has been tracking this vulnerability and in its blog post, the company explained that due to active exploitation of this security flaw tens of thousands of devices could be affected.

The company scanned the impacted Cisco devices and found that most belonged to telecom firms offering internet services to business and home users, including AT&T. The US had the highest number of compromised devices with a backdoor installed (4,659) followed by the Philippines (over 3,200).

Hackread.com had reported that the vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2023-20198, was discovered in the Cisco IOS XE software’s Web UI feature. Cisco warned customers about the vulnerability affecting Cisco RV320 and RV325 routers, explaining that it allows a remote unauthorized attacker to create an account on the compromised system with privilege level 15 access and go on to gain full control of the device. 

The vulnerability affects the IOS XE Software Web UI feature because it is enabled by default in the devices. Cisco recommends users disable the HTTP server feature on every internet-connected system to prevent exploitation. Attackers exploiting this flaw are hijacking routers from telecom firms. Cisco has confirmed that since at least mid-September, threat actors have been exploiting it as a zero-day.

The vulnerability was first discovered in March 2023, and an uptick in attacks exploiting it was observed from mid-September. Moreover, a highly sophisticated actor is suspected to be exploiting it, which hints at the launch of a targeted and coordinated campaign while Cisco is still working on a patch to fix it.

In its threat advisory published on October 16th, 2023, Cisco stated that the actor exploited the old, already patched vulnerability (CVE-2021-1435) to install the implant after obtaining access to the device.

“We have also seen devices fully patched against CVE-2021-1435 getting the implant successfully installed through an as-of-yet undetermined mechanism.”

CISCO

It is a serious security threat as the vulnerability has the highest criticality score of 10. The IOS XE software is an essential component of Cisco switches, wireless controller products, and routers. The vulnerability is critical enough to enable a complete takeover of Cisco devices, granting threat actors the ability to effortlessly monitor network traffic or present phishing pages loaded with harmful malware.

Reportedly, 469 of the compromised devices were registered at AT&T for residential and business clients. The company uses enterprise-grade Cisco XE routers, so small-sized organizations and individuals would likely be vulnerable to this threat instead of large corporations.

The risks posed by the vulnerability are wide-ranging, as attackers can leverage access to compromised devices to disrupt network operations, steal sensitive data, and launch new attacks against other systems on the network.

It is unclear how long Cisco will take to release a patch. Meanwhile, users must scan their devices for infection and disable the HTTP server feature, implement network segmentation, and monitor network traffic for suspicious activity.

Discord moves away from permanent bans to new warning system

Discord today has announced a wide array of changes and updates coming to the platform that include a new warning system, and some new features to make Discord even better for everybody.

One of these updates is the all-new avatar decorations that Discord rolled out as part of the new Shop last month. It also now includes animated profile backgrounds that match the avatar frame categories. These are all currently in early access for Nitro subscribers. But in a briefing with Android Headlines Discord said these will soon be available for everybody. If you’re a Nitro subscriber you’ll get a discount on these purchases. So there’s more incentive to sign up for a Nitro plan.

Discord will no longer issue permanent bans, and instead use a warning system to educate users on their behavior

The bigger change revolves around Discord’s new warning system. Where a user might have been permanently banned for certain violations before, Discord will now start to issue warnings to users in an attempt to educate them on their behavior. Discord says that it has found letting users know how they violated the policies allows them to “reflect and change their behavior.”

The idea is to give users more transparency on what’s going on. In hopes that users will step back and take a look at what they did and act more appropriately on the platform. Should a user violate Discord’s policies under this new system, they’ll get a DM that tells them if they got a warning or a violation. Which one they received will depend on how severe the action was that resulted in the DM. Users will also be told what if any actions are to be taken against them. Discord says more severe issues could result in account restrictions or a one-year temporary ban. Though it does note that there is still a zero-tolerance policy for the most serious violations.

Additionally Discord is adding in a new Teen Safety Assist feature. This includes safety alerts for teens. Where the first time a teen receives a message from another user, Discord will determine if an alert is needed. Sensitive content filters will be added as well that auto-blur images and other sensitive content. This filter will be active in both DMs and in group chats. And will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Say hello to a better mobile experience
