The Find My Device app is getting new icon

[ad_1]

Shoot, where did I leave my phone?” We’ve all asked this question plenty of times before. Well, when you can’t find your device, Google has a robust tool to help you locate it called the Find My Device app. According to 9To5Google, the Find My Device app is getting an update that brings a new logo.

The Find My Device app is a great tool to use if you find yourself searching for your phone. The app identifies devices that are signed in with your Google account. When you open the app, you’ll see your list of devices that you can track down. Once you tap on the device, you’ll see a map pop up showing the device’s location on a map.

If the device isn’t currently connected to the internet, it will show its last recorded location. Under the map, you’ll see additional options. One will play a sound on that device to help you locate it. Another device will secure your device. This will lock the device with its password or PIN. Also, you’ll be logged out of your account on the device.

The Find Me Device app is getting a new logo

Those of us who use this app are used to the green pin icon for the app. It’s a fitting logo, but Google has been planning on changing it for a bit. Back in June, the company showed off the new logo that it wanted for the app.

Instead of being a pin logo, the new logo will show the classic Google colors. This will give it the aesthetic of most Google apps nowadays. Instead of the pin, the icon will be more circular. we see a blue and green ring with red and yellow extensions radiating outward. This makes the logo look more like a radar. That makes sense, as you’re locating your devices.

Google find my device logo

This update is still rolling out to the public. If you can’t wait and you need this new icon now, you can get the APK from APK Mirror.

iPhone 15 cables are not color-matched, but there’s an upside

0
[ad_1]

There were rumors, before the iPhone 15 event, that the included cables will be color-matched. Well, we’re sorry to disappoint you. The iPhone 15 charging cables are not color-matched to the phone colors, but there’s an upside still.

The iPhone 15 series cables are not color-matched, but one rumor did come true

Another rumor said that the cables would be braided, and they are. They’re all white-colored, unfortunately, but at least they’re braided, which should help with the durability, and should also make them tangle up far less.

As many of you know, those are not the only changes when it comes to this year’s cables. Apple also switched the charging port on the iPhone 15 series. It’s now a Type-C port, finally, so the included cable is also Type-C.

That actually goes for both of its sides. Apple ships a Type-C to Type-C cable in the box, but you won’t find a charger in there. You’ll need to get one separately, if you don’t already own one. This goes for all four models that were announced.

Four iPhone 15 models got announced yesterday

As a reminder, Apple hosted a press event yesterday, during which it announced the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 models got a camera bump from 12MP to 48MP, along with improved hardware, and more.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, on the flip side, got a titanium shell, thinner bezels, and improved camera hardware. The ‘Pro Max’ even has a periscope camera on the back, unlike the iPhone 15 Pro.

All four iPhone 15 models now come with a Dynamic Island too, that feature is no longer reserved for the ‘Pro’ models. The notch basically became a thing of the past. The iPhone 15 series will become available to pre-order on Friday, September 15.

Patch now! September Microsoft Patch Tuesday includes two actively exploited zero-days

0
[ad_1]

Microsoft’s September 2023 Patch Tuesday is another important one. It patches two vulnerabilities which are known to be actively exploited.

Microsoft’s September 2023 Patch Tuesday is another important one. Not because it’s a busy one, but because we have some special cases. Patch Tuesday includes security updates for 59 bugs, two of which are known to be actively exploited.

The Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has added these two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog, based on evidence of active exploitation. This means that Federal Civilian Executive Branch (FCEB) agencies need to remediate this vulnerability by October 3, 2023 in order to protect their environments against active threats.

Let’s start by looking at those two vulnerabilities.

CVE-2023-36761 (CVSS score 6.2 out of 10): a Microsoft Word information disclosure vulnerability. Exploiting this vulnerability could allow the disclosure of NTLM hashes and the Preview Pane is an attack vector. These NTLM hashes can be used in NTLM Relay attacks (pass-the hash) to gain access to the account. This means a successful exploitation would allow the attacker to impersonate the user and gain their access rights.

CVE-2023-36802 (CVSS score 7.8 out of 10): a Microsoft Streaming Service Proxy Elevation of Privilege (EoP) vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain SYSTEM privileges.

Administrators of Exchange servers again have their work cut out for them. Five important vulnerabilities have been patched, three of which could result in Remote Code Execution (RCE). Visual Studio users have to deal with three critical RCE vulnerabilities and two rated as important.

A critical vulnerability which can be expected to have some impact is:

CVE-2023-29332 (CVSS score 7.5 out of 10): a Microsoft Azure Kubernetes Service Elevation of Privilege (EoP) vulnerability. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain Cluster Administrator privileges. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable and the attack complexity is low because an attacker does not require significant prior knowledge of the cluster/system so can achieve repeatable success when attempting to exploit this vulnerability.

Other vendors

Other vendors have synchronized their periodic updates with Microsoft. Here are few major ones that you may find in your environment.

Adobe has released security updates for Connect, Experience Manager, Acrobat and Reader.

Android’s September updates were released by Google.

Apple has released security updates for iOS and macOS.

Google has patched a critical vulnerability in Chrome that is being exploited in the wild.

SAP has released its September 2023 Patch Day updates.

We don’t just report on vulnerabilities—we identify them, and prioritize action.

Cybersecurity risks should never spread beyond a headline. Keep vulnerabilities in tow by using Malwarebytes Vulnerability and Patch Management.

Wonderlust scammers rear their heads

0
[ad_1]

We take a look at a cryptocurrency scam riding on the coat tails of the Apple Wonderlust event.

Yesterday, Apple launched its latest iPhone and Watch models at its massive Wonderlust event. As with many high profile launches like this, it attracted not just a mountain of press, but a whole load of scammers too.

One site uses the Apple brand to host a cryptocurrency scam. The hook is a supposed giveaway of “50,000 ETH and 5,000 BTC”, which is $79,885,500 and $130,325,000 respectively. Sadly the site, registered just yesterday, is not giving away this kind of digital cash.

The front page claims:

We believe that Blockchain and BTC coin will make the world more fair. To speed up the process of cryptocurrency mass adoption, we decided to run a 5,000 BTC giveaway.

Fake Apple giveaway site

As to how the scammers claw their ill-gotten gains from the victims, it’s a case of double your money. To get your foot on the ladder, all participants are required to chip in a little cryptocurrency of their own so there’s a large pool of funds for the lucky winner.

The site continues:

To participate you just need to send from 0.1 BTC to 50 BTC to the contribution address and we will immediately send you back 0.2 BTC to 100 BTC (x2) to the address you sent it from.

Fake donate links

To give you an idea of the supposed investment in the prize fund, 0.1 BTC is $2,606. 50 BTC is an eye watering $1,305,600. Meanwhile over in ETH land, a donation of 1 ETH would set you back $1,599. The maximum donation amount of 500 ETH is worth $79,9975.

This is an incredibly fast path to losing all of your money. An ETH and BTC address are provided for both fake donation options, and anyone sending funds to these addresses will likely not be seeing their money again.

Scrolling down the page shows a very long list of supposed transactions, as a way of encouraging people to hop on the bandwagon. However, sites which track address transactions and other activity display zero funds going in or out of those addresses.

With the event now over, the chances of this particular site hitting a payday will become increasingly remote. The people behind these kinds of sites are hoping that visitors won’t look too closely lest they spot the scam coming apart at the seams.

Even so, this is a common tactic and a popular way for scammers to encourage panic sending with the promise of huge payouts just out of reach. If any site asks you to “donate” cryptocurrency funds claiming you’ll double your money, you can safely ignore and move on.

This fake donation technique was doing the rounds last year, typically bolted on to Elon Musk scams. Here’s one from last April which used a “guess the planet” competition as bait. That same month, another scam made use of fake Medium blogs to achieve the same end result.

The value of your digital currency may rise or fall, but none of it matters if you’ve handed the lot to a scammer. If ever something had “If it’s too good to be true…” attached, this is most definitely somewhere up at the top.

Everything you need to know

Apple officially announced the Watch Series 9 on September 12 2023. It’s the company’s latest smartwatch and it comes with nifty advancements, many of which are powered by the use of the new S9 chip that’s inside of it. It’s also the same great Apple Watch you know and love in many ways. It has some improvements yes. But it still offers all the features that made the Watch Series 8 and its predecessors good watches. In this article, we’ll go over everything you need to know about the Watch Series 9. Ultimately trying to help you decide if you should spend your hard-earned money on it for the upgrade.

Apple Watch Series 9 Specs

To kick things off let’s talk about what the Watch Series 9 has going on for specs. For starters, the watch comes in two different sizes. You can get the Apple Watch Series 9 in either 41mm or 45mm sizes. We’re partial to the larger cases for smartwatches, but both will be nice. You can also get the watch case in either aluminum (which is less expensive) or stainless steel.

Both the aluminum and stainless steel also comes in multiple finishes. The Watch Series 9 features an always-on retina display with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits and a size of 1.9-inches, with sapphire crystal glass for protection. The watch is IP6X certified, and it’s dust tight and capable of water immersion up to 50 meters.

Additionally, it’ll run on WatchOS 10 with the new S9 chip inside. It supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n for connectivity, but it also supports Bluetooth 5.3, and you can even get the watch in an LTE version if you like. It also has 64GB of internal storage. For battery life, the watch can last for up to 18 hours, or up to 36 hours in low power mode.

How much will the Watch Series 9 cost?

Apple Watch Series 9 Cost

There are multiple price points available. So the price tag will depend on what version you choose. The starting cost of the Watch Series 9 is $399. This will get you the aluminum model in the 41mm size. If you want aluminum in the 45mm, the price jumps up to $429. Then the price goes up to $529 if you want the 45mm with cellular connectivity. Or $499 if you opt for the 41mm size.

Meanwhile the stainless steel model will start at $699 for the 41mm size and go up to $749 for the 45mm. Both sizes of the stainless steel watch come with cellular. Now keep in mind these are the full retail prices. It will also be possible to decrease the price of the watch by trading in an older watch. You’ll get more if you’re trading in an Apple Watch Series 8. But according to Apple you can get a minimum trade-in value of $60, and it can go up to $380. So there is a chance you could end up paying only $20 for the new watch if you got the 41mm aluminum model.

On top of these choices, it’ll also be possible to finance the watch over a period of 12 months. Which will break up the cost into payments of $33.25 (starting) for the aluminum model and $58.25(starting) for the stainless steel model. Some carriers will also offer the Apple Watch Series 9 and will have their own specific pricing and deals. AT&T for example will give you $300 in bill credits over 36 months if you purchase two watches and activate them with cellular. Verizon meanwhile will offer the watch with a starting price of $6 per month.

When can you buy the Apple Watch Series 9?

You can actually already pre-order the watch as of September 12. So you can get the watch order placed right now if you want to. The watch will officially go on sale on September 22.

Where can you buy the watch?

Apple will of course directly sell the watch to you. But you will also be able to get it from various other retailers. You can find the most common retailers below.

Apple

Amazon

Best Buy

– Verizon

– AT&T

What features will the Watch Series 9 have?

apple watch series 9 2

There’s quite a few new features being added to the watch, and many if not all of them are made possible by the new Series 9 chip inside of it. This is because it uses faster neural engines. Some of the new features include on-device Siri requests, precision finding with the new second-generation ultra wideband chip, new HomePod integrations and more. For the HomePod integrations, the Watch Series 9 will launch the Now Playing screen when you come within 4 meters of the HomePod if audio is already playing.

And if it’s not playing it’ll bring up media suggestions in the Smart Stack so you can choose something to play. There’s also a new Smart Stack to display relevant widgets. New watch faces are being added too and include options like Snoopy, Palette, and Solar Analog. There’s also a new Nike watch face called Nike Globe

The coolest new feature though, is the double tap gesture. With Watch Series 9 you will be able to do a handful of different things just by tapping your index finger and thumb together twice. This includes answering and ending calls, snapping a photo, snoozing alarms, pausing and resuming media, launching the Smart Stack, and scrolling through the Smart Stack.

Returning features

Outside of new features, Watch Series 9 will still have familiar features from its predecessor. Including an ECG app, a blood oxygen app, high and low heart rate alerts, and alerts for irregular heart rhythm and low cardio fitness. It can also sense temperature and track your cycles, and emergency SOS, fall detection, and international emergency calling make a return as well. Naturally, you’ll have access to hundreds of apps and the watch will be able to track sleep and a ton of different exercises and activities.

Will you be able to use Watch Series 8 bands on the new watch?

In short, yes. You can use your old bands from the Watch Series 8 on the Watch Series 9. Apple kept the same 41mm and 45mm sizes for the new watch, and it uses the same connecting mechanism. So all you have to do is transfer the bands over and latch them in.

That being said, there are going to be plenty of awesome new bands to check out. Like Apple’s new FineWoven magnetic link band that “feels and looks like soft suede.” Additionally, your bands from the Watch Series 7 should work too as the case for that model is also the same size.

What colors does the watch come in?

This will depend on which version of the watch you get. The Watch Series 9 will come in five colors for the aluminum model. This includes Pink, Starlight, Midnight, Silver, and (PRODUCT) RED. For the stainless steel, you have a choice of three different colors. This includes Gold, Graphite, and Silver.

Of course, you can augment the color with the bands. And there are so many different options there that you can personalize it to your heart’s content.

What new bands will be available for the Apple Watch Series 9?

apple watch series 9 4

There’s a handful of new bands coming and these will be available directly from Apple as well as other retailers. Though some will be exclusive to Apple. Options like the FineWoven Magnetic Link band, the Modern Buckle band, and new colors of the Sport band, Sport Loop, Ocean band, Alpine Loop, Trail Loop, Braded Solo loop and more will all be available.

There’s tons and tons of options. Rest assured, you’ll have plenty of choice in this area.

Apple iPhone 15 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Design

The two phones do look quite similar, but not identical, not even close. The iPhone 15 Pro has thinner bezels, three cameras on the back, and it’s also slightly shorter, narrower, and thicker. On top of that, you’ll notice that the phone is slightly heavier too, when you grab it. The iPhone 15 Pro weighs 187 grams, compared to 171 grams of the iPhone 15. That means that the iPhone 15 Pro is actually considerably lighter than its predecessor, as the iPhone 14 Pro’s weight was 206 grams.

The iPhone 15 Pro utilizes titanium for its frame now, though aluminum is also used in some capacity. The iPhone 15’s frame is made out of aluminum. That titanium build helped Apple reduce the weight of the phone. Considering that Apple also changed up the frame design a bit, the two phones also don’t cut into your hand nearly as much. The reduced weight on the ‘Pro’ model helps a lot too. The phone is simply more pleasant to hold and use now, it’s more ergonomic.

Both smartphones include a Dynamic Island now, while the rear cameras look very similar to the previous models, design-wise. The iPhone 15 retains a mute switch from its predecessor, but the same cannot be said for the iPhone 15 Pro. That handset has an Action Button on the left side, which is customizable. You can set it to activate the camera, for example, while the long-press will mute the phone. Once you’re in the camera, that button can also double as a shutter key.

Both smartphones are still quite slippery, but thanks to some changes in the frame design, and back glass, they’re a bit less slippery than their predecessors. Do note that both smartphones also come with IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. Another thing to note is that the iPhone 15 Pro supports USB 3.0 speeds, while the iPhone 15 is stuck on USB 2.0 speeds.

Apple iPhone 15 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Display

Both smartphones do include a 6.1-inch display, but… we’re not looking at the same displays here, not at all. Both displays are plenty sharp at 2556 x 1179 pixels. However, the iPhone 15 Pro has a ‘ProMotion’ display. In other words, it supports a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, while the iPhone 15 is stuck at 60Hz, as was its predecessor. Both of these displays are flat, by the way, in case you were wondering. Both are also OLED panels.

What about the brightness? Well, they both go up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness, which is great to see. Needless to say, that’s plenty bright for basically any scenario. HDR is supported by both displays. Only the iPhone 15 Pro has support for Always-On Display functionality, however. You will notice a Dynamic Island on both panels, as the notch became a thing of the past. Both displays are protected by the Ceramic Shield Glass.

Both panels are actually really good, based on initial impressions. They’re more than sharp enough, have great viewing angles, and the colors are quite vivid. The blacks are deep too. The iPhone 15 Pro has a huge advantage in the form of its higher refresh rate. Once you try using that display, it’ll be really hard to go back, even though Apple does a good job with 60Hz displays. It all depends from one person to the next, though, perhaps you won’t care.

Apple iPhone 15 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Performance

The iPhone 15 is fueled by the Apple A16 Bionic chip. That is the same processor that fuels the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. It has a 6-core GPU, and a 5-core GPU, on top of a 16-core Neural Engine. The iPhone 15 Pro comes with the all-new Apple A17 Pro chip. The company ditched the ‘Bionic’ name. That is a 6-core CPU with a 6-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. The difference is also in the manufacturing process, the A16 Bionic is a 4nm chip, while the A17 Pro is a 3nm chip.

This new chip does offer notably better performance, at least on paper, and it should go easier on the battery too. We didn’t get a chance to test it yet, though. It will be able to run some crazy games, based on what Apple presented. The Apple A16 Bionic is a beastly chip, on the other hand, and even though it’s inferior to the Apple A17 Pro, it’s still a truly excellent processor, one of the best. When it comes to RAM, the iPhone 15 comes with 6GB, while the iPhone 15 Pro includes 8GB of RAM. We believe it’s LPDDR5, but we’re not sure.

Apple iPhone 15 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Battery

Something that Apple didn’t confirm yet is the battery capacity. We don’t know what battery size do these two phones offer, but chances are we’ll get something similar to last year. The iPhone 14 included a 3,279mAh unit, while the ‘Pro’ model came with a 3,200mAh battery. It remains to be seen how similar battery capacities will be in the new models, but chances are they are not far off from this.

The iPhone 14 Pro didn’t exactly offer great battery life, so we’re hoping for some improvements in that regard. Apple didn’t really boast about anything of the sort for the ‘Pro’ models, which is a bit worrying. We’ll have to wait and see. Apple did boast about the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus battery life, though, promising a full day’s worth of battery life.

When it comes to charging, we’re once again stuck at 20W wired, and 15W wireless charging. The iPhone 15 models will support Qi2 charging too. Unfortunately, neither model will charge particularly fast, which is a bit disappointing. Also, don’t expect a charger to be included in the retail box.

Apple iPhone 15 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Cameras

The iPhone 15 comes with two cameras on the back, while the iPhone 15 Pro has three. A 48-megapixel main camera from the iPhone 14 Pro is now included on the back of the iPhone 15. In addition to that, you’re getting a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit with an f/2.4 aperture. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, has a 48-megapixel main camera (f/1.78), which is technically better than the one on the iPhone 15 (larger sensor). A 12-megapixel ultrawide camera is also included here, as is a 12-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom).

Both phones actually have the ability to change focus after taking an image, so you don’t have to specifically switch to ‘Portrait Mode’ before taking a shot. The iPhone 15 Pro should technically be able to take better pictures overall, thanks to the better main camera, but we’ll have to wait and see. Zoomed-in shots will be better on the iPhone 15 Pro, easy, as the iPhone 15 doesn’t have a telephoto camera at all. We will have to wait a bit in order to check out actual samples, and test out the phones.

Audio

Both phones do include a set of stereo speakers. The phones also support Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio playback. The sound from those speakers will likely be similar to what the iPhone 14 Pro provided, so there’s nothing to worry about.

When it comes to an audio jack, neither phone has it, as expected. You can, however, utilize those Type-C ports to connect your wired headphones, you’ll need a dongle though. Bluetooth 5.3 is supported on both phones.

The Files by Google app is about to become smarter with this upcoming feature

Google is reportedly working on a new feature for its Android Files app called Smart Search, which will automatically identify important documents and highlight them. This could make it easier for users to find the files they need, such as contracts, tax documents, or medical records.

Smart Search, not to be confused with Smart Storage which helps you save space on your device by deleting media that has already been backed up to Google Photos, is meant for files in the Documents folder of the Files app. It will use machine learning to identify important documents based on a variety of factors, including their content, file type, and creation date. Once a document has been identified as important, it will be highlighted in the Files app so that users can easily find it.

This was originally found and reported by @AssembleDebug on X, who was able to enable the feature via a flag. While testing, the leaker found that the feature will automatically and periodically scan and index your documents and images using something akin to OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to identify text within those files. Additionally, as the name implies, search will be available to find the related text and the document it is contained in.

In addition to highlighting important documents, Smart Search will also be able to suggest related documents. For example, if a user opens a contract, Smart Search might suggest other contracts that the user has saved. This could help users to stay organized and find the documents they need more quickly.

Smart Search is still in development, but it is believed that it will be released in a future update to the Files app. It is a new and innovative feature that could make the Files app even more useful, especially in cases where an important detail contained within a document is needed right away.

Critical Vulnerability Addressed

WebP has a serious flaw called (CVE-2023-4863), which is a heap buffer overflow.

In its security warning, Google said, “Google is aware that an exploit for CVE-2023-4863 is out there in the wild.”

On September 6, this was reported by the Citizen Lab at the Munk School at the University of Toronto and Apple Security Engineering and Architecture (SEAR).

The company is still not giving out more details about the hacks.

Google says, “Access to bug details and links may be limited until most users have been told about a fix.”

If a bug is found in a third-party code that is also used by other projects, we may need to keep some restrictions in place to keep our projects safe and secure.

Google said that if this problem hasn’t been fixed yet, it is very important that we keep putting limits in place to stop any harm or damage that could come from exploiting the vulnerability.
