YouTube employees worry that Shorts could impact revenue

0
[ad_1]

Short-form video has exploded in popularity in recent years, primarily due to platforms like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts. However, with Shorts now amassing a staggering 2 billion users, some senior YouTube employees have started worrying that it might overshadow the platform’s core business of long-form content and potentially impact their primary revenue source.

As per the Financial Times, (via 9To5Google)this issue stems from the fact that audiences are increasingly gravitating toward shorter, punchier video content, thanks in part to the growing influence of TikTok among the newer generation and brands preferring short-form videos to promote their products. Additionally, the issue becomes even more concerning when looking at YouTube’s ad revenue, which saw its first-ever quarterly decline in October since it began reporting it separately in 2020.

While YouTube did improve its ad revenue in subsequent months, it has been a significant concern for the company. This is because longer form videos offer more opportunities for ad placement and generally yield higher click-through rates on e-commerce links.

YouTube’s response

YouTube acknowledged these concerns and highlighted that Shorts are meant to complement, not compete with, other content formats on the platform, such as live streams and audio. Moreover, YouTube believes that offering a variety of content creates a “virtuous cycle” that attracts diverse viewers to the platform.

“We’ve been very pleased with its initial success. This is not a zero-sum game,” said YouTube.

However, Joseph Teasdale, Head of Tech at Enders Analysis, believes that YouTube itself is prioritizing Shorts’ exposure to its extensive user base. This is evident through the company’s actions, such as the downgrading of videos featuring TikTok branding and the introduction of lucrative payment options and new in-app editing tools. Additionally, YouTube has even turned to DeepMind to develop AI solutions aimed at enhancing platform performance and reducing costs.

[ad_1]

It is no news that Apple is switching to USB-C charging with the iPhone 15, and this might include the AirPods. In a recent Power On update, Mark Gurman points out that the coming AirPods will use USB-C charging ports. While there have been rumors about this change, Gurman’s reports solidify the adoption of the USB-C port across Apple’s soon-to-launch products.

Apple fans and critics around the world are in anticipation of the brand’s coming launch event. This event which Apple calls ‘Wonderlust’ will bring a major change to most products that would make the launch stage. Playing a major part in this change is the EU, thanks to their requirement for Apple to switch to using USB-C ports on their devices.

This requirement is reported to not only affect the iPhone 15 series but also all AirPods products to launch. To some fans, this change might be a great one, but to Apple, it might just be a slap to the face. Here are the available details on the coming Apple AirPods that will use USB-C charging ports.

The iPhone 15 series and the coming Apple AirPods will all launch with USB-C ports

Aside from the iPhone 15 series, reports say that Apple will also launch AirPods during the coming launch event. This event will take place on September 12, which is just a few days away and already has fans on their feet. While the iPhone 15 series will feature USB-C charging ports, this article will focus on the AirPods that will launch in a few days.

Apple fans can expect the launch of the third-generation AirPods Pros. This pair of wireless earbuds will pack a punch in terms of their performance, but they will also feature a change. Instead of charging with a lightning port, the coming Apple AirPods might charge with a USB-C port.

This change is a result of the EU’s demand that Apple make the switch to a more conventional charging port. With this change, prospective buyers of the new Apple products will be able to charge all their devices with one cable. Since some MacBooks and iPads already use USB-C ports, this change might not be hard for fans.

After this coming launch event, other Apple products to become available next year will come with USB-C ports. On Apple’s part, the company will be losing its iconic lightning port that it has always ported above USB-C. Lots of critics will look forward to how the company will announce this switch to USB-C ports during the coming launch event.

Until then, both fans and critics can stay in expectation of what Apple has in store for consumers. Aside from the iPhone 15 series and the coming Apple AirPods, the company will also launch other products. This might include a new entry to the Apple Watch Series and some software upgrades.

Hacker Group Disguised as Marketing Company to Attack Enterprise

0
[ad_1]

In a recent development, NSFOCUS Security Labs has detected a fresh APT34 phishing attack

During this operation, APT34, believed to originate from Iran and also known as OilRig or Helix Kitten, assumed the identity of a marketing services company named Ganjavi Global Marketing Services (GGMS).

They meticulously targeted enterprises, employing a variant of the SideTwist Trojan to gain sustained control over victim hosts.

A Glimpse into APT34

APT34, an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) group active since 2014, specializes in cyber espionage and sabotage.

Operating primarily in the Middle East, they target diverse sectors such as finance, government, energy, chemicals, and telecommunications.

APT34 possesses advanced attack capabilities, tailoring intrusion methods for different targets and even demonstrating supply chain attack proficiency.

Following the exposure of their primary attack tools in a 2019 leak, APT34 began developing new tools, including RDAT, SideTwist, and Saitama.

The Deceptive Bait

For this operation, APT34 utilized a decoy file titled “GGMS Overview.doc.” This document introduced a fictitious “Ganjavi Global Marketing Services” company, ostensibly providing global marketing services with a clear focus on enterprises.

Notably, two upload records in the United States suggest APT34’s intention to target U.S. businesses.

Attack Execution

The attack followed a known pattern, albeit with some variations. A malicious macrocode concealed within the decoy file orchestrated the deployment environment.

This macrocode extracted the Trojan SystemFailureReporter.exe from the document in base64 format, placed it in the %LOCALAPPDATA%\SystemFailureReporter\ directory, and created an update.xml text file in the same directory, serving as the Trojan’s activation switch.

Subsequently, the malicious macro code established a scheduled task called “SystemFailureReporter,” summoning the Trojan every five minutes, ensuring its continuous operation.

The Trojan, identified as a SideTwist variant, communicated via HTTP with a CnC server at 11.0.188.38:443.

Anatomy of the Trojan

This variant of the SideTwist Trojan, compiled using GCC, shares similarities with previous iterations but exhibits differences in the compilation.

Its core functions involve communication with the CnC server, execution of commands, and file uploads. Upon execution, the Trojan checks for the presence of an “update.xml” file, employing anti-sandbox measures.

It collects victim host information to generate a unique ID and initiates communication with the CnC server.

The CnC communication involves encrypted instructions, decoded using a multi-byte XOR key derived from the string “notmersenne.” These instructions dictate various actions, from running shell commands to downloading/uploading files.

Intriguingly, this APT34 campaign used the CnC IP address 11.0.188.38. Notably, port 443 did not respond, making it challenging to ascertain the nature of the CnC server.

Investigation revealed that this IP address belongs to the United States Department of Defense Network Information Center in Columbus, Ohio.

This choice of IP suggests that APT34 may have used this operation for testing, with the intention of activating a different, concealed CnC address in subsequent attacks.

APT34’s recent attack showcases its consistent methodology while introducing a GCC-based SideTwist Trojan variant and an enigmatic CnC IP address. This specificity implies a testing phase, safeguarding attack resources until the actual CnC address is enabled.

This strategic approach underscores the adaptability and evasiveness of APT groups.

Trump’s Georgia trial will be livestreamed on YouTube

0
[ad_1]

On Thursday, regarding Trump’s Georgia Election Interference. Judge Scott McAfee, a Fulton County judge, made an announcement. He declared that, during the trial of former President Donald Trump for election interference, he would allow press coverage, cameras, and laptops in the courtroom. The court will also livestream the entire trial on YouTube.

Donald Trump and 18 co-defendants will face trial on October 23rd. They face multiple racketeering charges related to their actions in Georgia to undermine and overturn the 2020 presidential election results. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis labeled these efforts a “criminal enterprise” aimed at unlawfully keeping Trump in power. Trump has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

While some places rarely record court proceedings, Georgia maintains a more open approach.

During an interview with Atlanta First News, Atlanta-based attorney Josh Schiffer explained, “Georgia courts always welcome the media and the public to observe our legal processes.” He emphasized that, unlike many states with strict rules, Georgia courts generally allow judges to decide whether to grant such access.

For context, when Trump faced arraignment in New York for alleged financial crimes, the court allowed only still photography. In a Miami case, the court entirely prohibited photography. As a result, the public had limited access to the in-court proceedings of Trump’s federal election interference case, with only the Georgia state prosecution providing extensive live streaming coverage.

Judge McAfee’s decision symbolizes a commitment to transparency and openness within the judicial process. It grants both the American public and global audiences the opportunity to closely follow and scrutinize the proceedings in this high-profile case. This represents a significant departure from typical courtroom practices, offering insight into how the legal system handles a case that has captured the nation’s attention.

Point of live streaming Trump’s Georgia election trial

By live streaming the trial on YouTube, Judge McAfee ensures that people from all backgrounds can witness the trial in real-time. This aligns with Georgia’s historical approach to courtroom transparency and underscores the evolving role of technology in engaging the public with the justice system.

In an era where access to information and transparency in government processes are crucial, Judge McAfee’s decision sets a remarkable precedent for conducting and sharing high-stakes legal proceedings with the public. It reaffirms the principle that justice should not only be carried out but also witnessed, empowering the public to form their own judgments based on firsthand observations of the trial.

While debates may arise about the potential impact of live streaming on the trial’s conduct or the privacy of the individuals involved, Judge McAfee’s decision ultimately underscores the importance of open and transparent legal proceedings in a democratic society. It allows the public to hold their leaders accountable and actively participate in the democratic process by closely observing and evaluating legal proceedings that have far-reaching implications for the nation.

Meta considering paid versions of Instagram and Facebook for users in the EU

0
[ad_1]

Meta is having a hard time in the EU where regulators are scrutinizing the company’s practices when it comes to privacy and advertisement on its social apps. In response to regulatory scrutiny, Meta is considering paid versions of Instagram and Facebook for users in the European Union.

According to people with knowledge of the company’s plans cited by The New York Times, Meta might make it possible for Facebook and Instagram users in the EU to pay subscriptions that will offer them an ad-free experience either (or both) of the social apps.

The subscriptions will not be forced onto users, but this feels like a smart way to comply with EU’s requests and make some money at the same time too. Putting ads on everyone’s feeds would’ve probably make Meta more money, but paid versions of Facebook and Instagram are likely to mitigate some of the losses.

The free version of Facebook and Instagram will continue to exist in the EU alongside the paid versions. There’s no telling how much the ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram will cost, nor when/if Meta will make them available.

[ad_1]

In the ever-evolving landscape of mobile technology, one innovation has been making waves like no other: 6G. The fifth generation of wireless technology is not merely an incremental upgrade; it’s a game-changer that promises to reshape the way we interact with our smartphones and the digital world around us.

Welcome to the world of 6G, where connectivity is faster, smarter, and more transformative than ever before.

In this blog post, we embark on a journey to explore the profound impact of 6G on smartphone technology. From the lightning-fast speeds that redefine how we use our devices to the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and smart homes, 6G is changing the game in ways we could only dream of a few years ago.

Understanding 6G Technology

6G stands for the fifth generation of wireless technology, and it represents a significant leap forward in terms of speed, capacity, and connectivity. While it builds upon the foundation of its predecessors, 3G and 4G/LTE, 6G introduces several key characteristics that set it apart:

– Speed: One of the most noticeable features of 6G is its incredible speed. It promises to deliver data rates of up to 10 Gbps (gigabits per second). This means that downloading large files, streaming high-definition videos, and using data-intensive applications will become nearly instantaneous.

– Low Latency: Latency refers to the time it takes for data to travel from a device to its destination and back. 6G reduces latency to a mere 1 millisecond or less. This ultra-low latency is crucial for applications that demand real-time responses, such as online gaming, augmented reality, and autonomous vehicles.

– Increased Capacity: 6G networks are designed to support a vastly increased number of devices simultaneously. This is vital for the expanding Internet of Things (IoT), where everything from smart thermostats to connected cars relies on a robust and scalable network.

– Network Slicing: 6G introduces the concept of network slicing, allowing network operators to allocate specific portions of their network for particular use cases. For example, a slice can be dedicated to supporting autonomous vehicles, ensuring they have the required bandwidth and low latency for safe navigation.

– Millimeter Waves: 6G utilizes higher-frequency radio waves, including millimeter waves (mmWave). These higher frequencies enable faster data transmission but require the deployment of more small cells and antennas due to shorter propagation distances.

Differences Between 6G and Its Predecessors (3G and 4G/LTE)

To appreciate the significance of 6G, it’s essential to understand how it differs from the previous generations of wireless technology:

– Speed: While 3G offered data speeds of up to 2 Mbps (megabits per second) and 4G/LTE improved this to around 100 Mbps, 6G takes it to a whole new level, achieving speeds of up to 10 Gbps. This dramatic increase in speed allows for instant downloads and smoother streaming.

– Latency: 3G and 4G/LTE typically had latency in the range of 30 to 50 milliseconds. 6G’s ultra-low latency of 1 millisecond or less is a significant improvement, making real-time applications like video conferencing and online gaming much more responsive.

– Capacity: 6G networks can support far more devices per square kilometer than 4G/LTE. This means that in densely populated areas or at large events, your smartphone should maintain fast and reliable connectivity.

– Frequency Bands: 6G uses a broader spectrum of frequency bands, including the aforementioned millimeter waves. While 3G and 4G primarily operate in lower-frequency bands, 6G takes advantage of higher frequencies to deliver faster speeds and lower latency.

– Use Cases: The capabilities of 6G open up new possibilities for applications like augmented reality, virtual reality, remote surgery, and the widespread adoption of IoT devices, which were challenging to support efficiently with 4G.

Faster Download and Upload Speeds

One of the most compelling features of 6G technology is its ability to deliver blistering download and upload speeds that were previously unimaginable with earlier generations of wireless technology like 3G and 4G/LTE.

– Download Speeds: 6G is designed to provide download speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). To put this into perspective, that’s more than 100 times faster than what you might typically experience with 4G/LTE. With 6G, you can download an entire HD movie in seconds, stream 4K videos without buffering, and download large files in the blink of an eye.

– Upload Speeds: While upload speeds on 4G networks typically range from 5 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps), 6G offers upload speeds of up to 3 Gbps. This significant increase in upload speeds is particularly important for tasks like uploading high-definition videos to social media, sharing large files in the cloud, or engaging in high-quality video conferencing.

Benefits of Low Latency in Real-Time Applications

Low latency is another critical aspect of 6G that has a profound impact on the way we use our smartphones and other connected devices. Latency refers to the delay between sending a request and receiving a response. In the context of mobile technology, low latency means reduced delays in data transmission, leading to nearly instantaneous responses.

Here are some key benefits of low latency in real-time applications:

– Gaming: Gamers can rejoice as 6G’s low latency allows for near-instantaneous response times. This is particularly vital in competitive online gaming, where split-second decisions can make the difference between victory and defeat. With 6G, online gaming experiences are smoother, more responsive, and more immersive than ever before.

– Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR): AR and VR applications rely on real-time interaction with the environment. 6G’s low latency ensures that AR and VR experiences are highly responsive, making them more comfortable and engaging. From interactive educational tools to virtual tours and immersive gaming, 6G unlocks the full potential of AR and VR.

– Telemedicine: In telemedicine, low latency is critical for real-time communication between doctors and patients. With 6G, remote medical consultations become more seamless and effective. Surgeons can even perform remote surgery with the precision and real-time feedback necessary for success.

– Autonomous Vehicles: Self-driving cars depend on instantaneous data communication to make split-second decisions. 6G’s low latency is essential for ensuring the safety and reliability of autonomous vehicles, as it enables rapid communication between vehicles and their surroundings, such as traffic signals and other vehicles.

– IoT and Smart Homes: In smart homes, low latency enhances the responsiveness of connected devices. For example, when you command your smart lighting system to turn on, it responds instantly, creating a smoother and more user-friendly experience.

6G’s ability to deliver faster download and upload speeds, combined with its low latency, unlocks a world of possibilities for real-time applications and services. From immersive gaming to transformative medical advancements and the seamless operation of smart devices, 6G is reshaping the way we connect and interact with the digital world.
