Samsung launched eleven different smartphone models in the first three months of 2023. From the entry-level Galaxy F04 to the Galaxy S23 Ultra flagship, it has new devices at every price point in the market. However, this seems to have done little to help the company keep arch-rival Apple at bay. The iPhone maker overtook Samsung to become the world’s largest smartphone vendor in Q1 2023.
According to the latest data from research firm StatCounter, Samsung captured 27.09 percent of the global smartphone market in January this year. Its market shares in February and March were 26.75 percent and 27.1 percent. Apple, on the other hand, took 27.6 percent, 27.1 percent, and 28.42 percent of the market respectively in the first three months of the year. As you can see, the iPhone maker was marginally ahead of the Galaxy maker in all three months.
While it may not be a big gap, what makes it a big loss for Samsung is the timing. Apple zoomed past the Korean firm just when the latter launched its latest flagship smartphones. That’s despite no new iPhones debuting since September last year. Samsung led the chart around that time. The Galaxy maker was the world’s largest smartphone vendor for the whole of 2022. It conceded the top spot at the beginning of 2023 and the Galaxy S23 series didn’t help it reclaim the crown.
Samsung may eventually return to the top spot, though. As said earlier, it has already launched several devices across various price points this year. Its Galaxy A series phones have always been the volume driver. The new Galaxy A54 5G, Galaxy A34 5G, and Galaxy A14 5G should eventually help it take a bigger share of the market. However, these phones have a lower profit margin, so Apple will still end up making more money off smartphones. It has been this way for years, and it likely won’t change in 2023.
Samsung and Apple make up more than half of the global smartphone industry
According to a separate report, Samsung Galaxy and Apple iPhone devices make up more than half of all smartphones currently in use globally. It is estimated that around 6.84 billion smartphones are active currently across the world (via). Of that, 1.85 billion are iPhones and 1.82 billion are Galaxy devices. Based on these figures, the two firms account for almost 54 percent of the industry. However, it appears people are increasingly preferring iPhones over Galaxy phones. It remains to be seen if Samsung bounces back anytime soon.
