Samsung has seemingly begun testing the next major camera update for the Galaxy S23 series, or at least the Ultra model. A screenshot shared on Twitter shows a new 2x zoom option for portrait shots in the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s stock camera app. This is one of the many new features the company has been working on over the past few weeks.

Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones currently only offer two focal length options when taking photos in the Portrait mode. You can either capture portrait shots without zooming in on the subject or select the 3x zoom option. The former option uses the primary rear camera while the latter uses the 3x zoom camera to capture your shot.

However, users have been complaining that these two options don’t always give the desired result. More precisely, standard portrait shots are often too wide, while a 3x zoom brings the subject too close to the lens. A 2x zoom option, which would capture a cropped shot with the primary camera, could bring a balance between the two.

Thankfully, a Samsung representative recently confirmed that the company is readying this feature. They said the next update for the Galaxy S23 series would bring it. With the May update already out, all eyes are now on the June release. Ahead of that, Samsung is internally testing the new firmware build for the devices, complete with the promised feature.

According to Twitter tipster Ice Universe, who shared the aforementioned screenshot, the Galaxy S23 Ultra will capture 2x zoomed portrait shots in the 50MP mode rather than the default 12MP setting. This is to ensure that cropping into the scene won’t affect the image quality. If the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ also get this feature, things will probably work similarly.

The June update for the Galaxy S23 series may contain a lot more goodies

As said earlier, this is one of the many new camera features Samsung has in the pipeline for the Galaxy S23 series. We are expecting a fix for the HDR issue that causes a halo effect on photos. The company has also announced support for high-resolution (50MP) 2x zoom videos. There have been rumors about improvements to low-light videos as well.

While it’s unclear if the June update would bring all of these goodies, some of them may be part of the package. The new firmware build that Samsung is currently testing internally reportedly has a file size of 1.5GB and contains many changes. The build number ends with WE9, though it mostly varies depending on the market. We will let you know when Samsung releases the next update for the Galaxy S23 lineup.
