Samsung has announced the Exynos 2400, its next-gen flagship chipset for smartphones. The new chip brings a notable performance boost over the previous solution in the lineup, the Exynos 2200. As expected, it is heavily focused on artificial intelligence (AI) performance. It will power the Galaxy S24 series next year, at least in some markets.
The Exynos 2400 brings almost a 15 times increase in AI performance
Generative AI is all the rage right now. The tech has fundamentally altered the way we use online tools and services. Ongoing research and developments mean there are no boundaries to what AI can create and accomplish in the future. All major tech companies are preparing for this future where applications of AI may expand to many new fields. Unsurprisingly, the focus on mobile AI is growing too.
A few days back, Google kind of redefined mobile AI with its Tensor G3 processor for the Pixel 8 series. Samsung is now going the same route with the Exynos 2400. According to the company, its upcoming smartphone processor brings a massive 14.7x boost in AI performance compared to the Exynos 2200, which shipped with the Galaxy S22 series in some markets (Galaxy S23 used a Snapdragon chip globally).
Samsung didn’t go into details, but the Exynos 2400 appears to take mobile AI to a whole new level. The company demoed a text-to-image AI generation tool for smartphones using the new chip as a reference board. Thanks to a 1.7x faster CPU, we are in for a notable boost in overall performance too. The Korean firm is touting an improved GPU as well.
The Exynos 2400 features the Xclipse 940 custom GPU based on AMD’s latest RDNA 3 architecture. Samsung says the new chip offers enhanced ray tracing. It can render optical effects such as global illumination, reflection, and shadow more effectively and realistically, enabling an immersive gaming experience. That said, early benchmark scores of the Xclipse 940 GPU are disappointing, so wait for the full picture.
Samsung yes yet to detail the specs of the new chip
Samsung unveiled the Exynos 2400 during its System LSI Tech Day event in San Jose, California on Thursday. It was more of a teaser than an official launch. The company talked about the aforementioned CPU, GPU, and AI boost without going into details about its specs and other features.
However, earlier leaks have revealed that the Exynos 2400 will be a 4nm deca-core (ten CPU cores) chipset featuring one ARM v9.2 Cortex-X4 core clocked at 3.1GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores at 2.9GHz, three more Cortex-A720 cores at 2.6GHz, and four Cortex-A520 cores at 1.8GHz. The Xclipse 940 GPU is said to boast twice as many computing units as the Exynos 2200’s Xclipse 920.
The new chip will come with an integrated 5G modem capable of delivering downlink speeds of up to 10Gbps and uplink speeds of up to 3.87Gbps. It supports UFS 4.0 storage and LPDDR5X memory with an 8.5Gbps bandwidth. The Exynos 2400 can handle up to 320MP resolution cameras and supports 8K video recording at 60fps. It may offer a two-way satellite communication system as well.
