Canalys has released a new report regarding the top five global smartphone manufacturers by smartphone shipments. A rather unexpected smartphone OEM managed to find its way to that top 5 list.

A rather unexpected smartphone OEM appears in the top 5 list

The smartphone manufacturer we’re talking about is Transsion. Some of you may not even know who this is. Well, perhaps if we tell you what brands are under that company, things will become clearer. This Chinese OEM stands behind Tecno, Infinix, and iTel brands.

Transsion managed to ship 22.7 million smartphones during the second quarter of this year. That way it squeezed itself to the fifth place on this list. It shipped 22% more smartphones compared to the same period last year.

Transsion stood at 6% market share a year ago, and now it managed to grab a 9% piece. This company actually managed to take advantage of the recovery in African markets, and thus fly on the wings of some emerging markets.

Samsung is still leading the pack, followed by Apple

What about the rest of the list? Well, it’s exactly what you’d expect, actually. Samsung is still first with 53 million shipments in the quarter, which is a 14% decline compared to Q2 2022. Samsung also has the leading share in the market with 21%.

Apple is second-placed with 43 million units sold, and a 17% market share. Apple also shipped fewer phones than in the same period last year, 13% less, if you’re counting.

Xiaomi sits in third place with 33.2 million units shipped, and a 13% market share. Xiaomi also shipped fewer phones than a year ago, 16% less. OPPO is fourth-placed with 25.2 million shipments, and a 10% market share- OPPO shipped 8% fewer phones than a year ago.

All other smartphone OEMs hold 31% of the market, with 81.1 million smartphones shipped. All of them, as a group, also declined in terms of YoY smartphone shipments, by 11%.

S, out of the top 5 smartphone OEMs on this list, only Transsion managed to grow YoY. All other smartphone OEMs were not even close. This is kind of surprising, but it’s interesting to see Transsion here. It’ll be interesting to see what will happen in the next quarter.
