A low-end Apple Vision Pro might be on the way

Rumors about Apple working on foldable iPhones and iPads aren’t new. However, there are contrasting reports about their release timeline. Some say the iPhone will arrive earlier, by the end of 2026. Others say the company will first launch a foldable iPad. There are also reports saying one or both could be delayed until 2027.

While we wait for more concrete information, noted X tipster @Tech_Reve recently posted an image that allegedly shows Apple’s product roadmap for 2023-2027. The source says the roadmap comes from Samsung Securities, a financial services company under the Samsung group. We cannot vouch for the legitimacy of the information, but there are some notable takeaways here.

Firstly, Apple will launch its first OLED iPad later this month or next. There are no other major new products planned for 2024. This means the iPhone 16 series won’t bring any hardware innovation—the iPhone 15 Pro Max brought a periscope telephoto zoom camera with 5x optical zoom. The solution may expand to the Pro model this year but Apple won’t add anything new.

In 2025, the company will introduce the iPhone SE 4 with a 6.1-inch OLED display and a 48MP primary camera. Apple will also allegedly upgrade some iPhone 17 models to 12GB RAM and 48MP cameras. All three rear cameras and the selfie shooter could feature 48MP sensors. These upgrades should be accompanied by enhanced software optimization, making an already-strong iPhone camera stronger.

Apple will follow up with a foldable iPhone in 2026. It will feature a 6-inch cover screen and an 8-inch inner display. The roadmap says we will see an OLED iPad Air in the same year. It will come in 8.4-inch and 10.9-inch models. We will also get an OLED MacBook in 14-inch and 16-inch models. The company could launch a low-end (more affordable) version of its revolutionary Vision Pro XR headset.

In 2027, Apple plans to bring another revolutionary wearable product to the tech industry. It has AR Glasses in the pipeline. The glasses will feature 1.4-inch RGB screens with MicroOLED or MicroLED panels. 2027 will also bring the first foldable iPad from Appl, according to the leaked roadmap. The device will feature a 20-inch display. Whether the next three or four years pan out like this for Apple, only time will tell.

When uploading content, creators will now be prompted to indicate if their videos contain “meaningfully altered or synthetically generated” elements that could be mistaken for genuine footage. This disclosure won’t be necessary for simple edits, special effects, or obviously unrealistic AI creations.

YouTube will display labels to inform viewers about AI-generated content. Most of the time, these labels will appear in the video’s expanded description. For videos discussing sensitive subjects like health, politics, or finance, the label will be placed prominently on the video itself.

In some cases where creators don’t disclose, YouTube may apply labels to videos, especially when they involve sensitive topics. While there are no immediate penalties for non-disclosure, YouTube plans to implement them in the future, potentially including content removal or suspension from the YouTube Partner Program.

The new labeling system is launching first for mobile viewers and will gradually expand to desktop and TV. The disclosure option for creators will first be accessible on desktop, then on mobile. Furthermore, YouTube is seeking feedback to refine this process as it evolves.

New AcidRain Malware Variant "AcidPour" Found Targeting Ukraine

SentinelLabs researchers have discovered “AcidPour,” a variant of the AcidRain Linux malware targeting Linux systems in Ukraine. This new strain expands on its predecessor and poses a risk to users.

Researchers at SentinelLabs have uncovered a new variant of the Acid Rain malware, dubbed “Acid Pour,” which has emerged in Ukraine. The discovery was made over the weekend, with J. A. Guerrero-Saade, AVP of SentinelLabs, sharing insights via X (formally Twitter).

The original AcidRain malware surfaced in March 2022, notably used during the ‘Viasat hack,’ which disrupted KA-SAT Surfbeam2 modems at the onset of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

TomHegel, Principal Threat Researcher at SentinelLabs, identified the new variant, compiled specifically for Linux x86 devices. While AcidPour shares similarities with AcidRain in certain strings, it separates significantly in its codebase, compiled for x86 architecture rather than MIPS.

It is worth noting that popular Linux distros for x86 devices include Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, and Debian. On the other hand, MIPS (Microprocessor without Interlocked Pipelined Stages) is a type of instruction set architecture (ISA), which essentially defines the language a processor understands and uses to execute instructions. Similar to x86, it’s a set of rules and specifications for how a processor operates.

AcidRain operated as a generic wiper, targeting common directories and device paths on embedded Linux distros. AcidPour, however, introduces new elements, referencing Unsorted Block Images (UBI) and virtual block devices associated with Logical Volume Manager (LVM), suggesting a potential expansion of targets beyond previous iterations.

Despite the similarities, there are notable differences, including a distinct wiping logic for devices like LVMs, indicating a potentially evolved strategy by threat actors. The good news is that SentinelLabs has raised awareness of AcidPour among stakeholders in Ukraine, although the specific targets and scope of the operation remain unclear.

The discovery goes on to show how fast malware threats are evolving, with attackers adapting their tactics to exploit vulnerabilities in various systems. The Pixel 8a may have gained an FCC certification

Like clockwork, Google has been releasing the mid-range version of its Pixel phones ever since the Pixel 3a. These phones have been getting an early summer release over the past couple of years, and we presume that this will be the case this year. Well, a new FCC certification may have confirmed our assumptions. A new Pixel device, presumably the Pixel 8a, has just gained FCC certification.

The information provided in the FCC certification is official. However, you may still want to take this news with a grain of salt, as the FCC listing did not exclusively point to Pixel 8a. So, there’s always the chance that Google will have a surprise for us.

According to the FCC filing, this device has the model number G8HNN. So, this device has officially undergone testing, and it is sure to launch relatively soon. Since FCC filings give official information, we have few details about what this device will have. However, it doesn’t explain too much.

A mystery Pixel device, possibly the Pixel 8a, gains FCC certification

The information explained has to do with some of the less appreciated aspects of a phone. We’re talking about the signal radios that this phone will have. This mystery Pixel device will be able to use 5G on all major US carriers along with mmWave 5G, Wi-Fi 6, and NFC. The image below shows all of the details, so you can read those if they mean anything to you.

If history is any indication, the Pixel 8a will use the Google Tenser G3, the same processor that’s in the Pixel 8 (Review) and Pixel 8 Pro (Review). Also, we expect this phone to have a 1080p+ display, a set of powerful cameras, and the latest version of Android. Since the base Pixel 8 cannot use Gemini Nano, it’s expected that the Pixel 8a will also lack this AI model.

As for the price, we are still pretty much in the dark. However, rumors state that the Pixel 8a will cost more than the Pixel 7a. The Pixel 7a costs $499 MSRP. So, if the Pixel 8a is more expensive than the Pixel 7a, then there’s a chance that it could cost around $619 USD. That is the price converted from the rumored €569.90. So, if that’s the case, then the Pixel 8a will be a pretty significant jump in price.

In any case, this new report lets us know that the Pixel 8a could be in production and ready to get a formal announcement soon.

Not only that, but Elon Musk feels that OpenAI is basically a de facto subsidiary of the largest company in the world, Microsoft. So, OpenAI and Elon Musk are battling this out in court as we speak.

Grok is now open source

The battle between open source and closed source continues. AI models like Gemini, GPT-3.5, GPT-4, Apple’s AI models, Etc. are all closed off. This means that future development of these models relies only on the companies producing them, and they’re not open to any outside influence. However, there are plenty of open-source AI models out there that people can use for their needs.

Grok is now among them. If you’re a person who wants to use the Grok AI model for whatever reason, it’s available today. You can access this through the official GitHub. The model is called Grok-1, and it uses the Apache 2.0 license. If you’re planning on using Grok-1 for any sort of product or commercial use, then you’ll want to read the Apache 2.0 license information. It tells you what you can and can’t do with The Grok-1.

The GitHub repository contains everything you need to use this 341 billion “mixture-of-experts model.” In the official announcement post, it states that Grok-1 was not fine-tuned for any particular task. So, it’s a very general model. You’ll be using the raw base model checkpoint from October 2023.

Responding to the lawsuit, Apple says that they have already added a feature in the gadget to prevent its use by stalkers. The feature will notify the owner by playing a loud sound if the AirTags go beyond a certain set distance. If anyone else’ AirTag is also traveling with the user for a long time, then they will receive a notification on their iOS gadget regarding this. They will also get an option to play loud sounds on it to locate it.

The lawsuit also claims that AirTags increases the risk of stalking for customers who do not use Apple goods. This is because Android users receive no warning or alarm when an unknown AirTag remains in their neighborhood for an extended period of time.

However, the US District Judge Vince Chhabria denied Apple’s bid to not list the lawsuit in court. The judge further states that Apple must confront the lawsuit challenging them over the claim of negligence regarding the potential stalking hazards caused by its AirTags. The situation seems not to be in the favour of the brand. However, it would be worth noticing how the brand tackles the lawsuit in the future.

Tor Launches WebTunnel Bridges To Evade Censorship

Moving on with its aim to promote a personalized and private internet experience sans censorship, tor has announced another major step. Specifically, Tor has now launched WebTunnel bridges to facilitate users in repressive regions by mimicking HTTPS.

As explained in a recent post, Tor has now rolled out the new WebTunnel bridges with its stable release, helping users worldwide.

Tor has long faced restrictions in several countries as it allows access to the dark web, which is prohibited in many regions. A key technique authorities employ to detect Tor usage is the peculiar internet traffic it generates. The layers of encryption Tor applies to protect users’ data make the traffic appear heavily obfuscated, which, in turn, alerts the authorities.

However, with WebTunnel, The Onion Router project aims to help users stay hidden in plain sight. The new WebTunnel bridges mimic HTTPS traffic, similar to the HTTPT proxy. Describing how it works, Tor explains,

WebTunnel is a censorship-resistant pluggable transport designed to mimic encrypted web traffic (HTTPS) inspired by HTTPT. It works by wrapping the payload connection into a WebSocket-like HTTPS connection, appearing to network observers as an ordinary HTTPS (WebSocket) connection.

Tor ensures the similarity with HTTPS traffic to the extent that it can coexist with a website on the same network endpoint. This way, a standard traffic reverse proxy can forward both the standard traffic and the WebTunnel to the respective app servers. Consequently, the existence of a secret WebTunnel bridge remains veiled.

WebTunnel isn’t Tor’s first move to hide users’ traffic. It already offers obfsproxy bridges that apply heavy obfuscation with stealth measures to protect users’ data without being detected. However, since repressive regimes like China’s Great Firewall largely oppose encryption, they can detect and block encrypted data. At this point, WebTunnel’s approach to mimicking standard traffic increases the probability of remaining undetected even in these regions.

Currently, users can only get the WebTunnel bridges from Tor’s official website. However, the project plans to provide these bridges through other means, such as Telegram, in the future.
