Samsung can’t seem to be able to plug Galaxy A55 leaks. Just as it announced a January 11 launch of the advice alongside the Galaxy A35, a couple of European retailers prematurely listed the duo on their websites complete with images and specs. Now, we have come across a review video of the unreleased device, detailing its performance.

This Galaxy A55 review is in Russian and is currently live on the Chinese video streaming platform Bilibili. It is a 15-minute-long video that offers a detailed insight into the upcoming Samsung smartphone. According to the reviewer, the device’s Exynos 1480 processor performs similarly to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 778G from 2021. While it may not sound very promising, wait for the bigger picture.

The reviewer ran multiple benchmark tests on the Galaxy A55 and it consistently performed substantially better than its predecessor. Geekbench and AnTuTu scores were up by over 20 percent, which is great news. A 15-minute CPU speed limit test also didn’t raise the device’s temperature to an uncomfortable level, nor there was a steep decline in performance due to thermal throttling. This bodes well for Samsung’s Exynos chipsets.

The Exynos 1480’s Xclipse 530 GPU, which is a custom solution co-developed by Samsung and AMD with the latter’s RDNA 2 graphics architecture, also lived up to expectations. It delivered a 31.4 percent performance boost over the Galaxy A54’s Mali-G68 GPU on Geekbench. You can expect smooth gaming here. The new chip also reportedly brings a whopping 167 percent increase in the NPU performance.

The Galaxy A55 brings improvements in other areas too. Firstly, the 6.6-inch Super AMOLED display is said to boast a peak brightness of 1,650 nits. The device will feature Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection along with a metallic (aluminum) frame. While the camera setup will probably remain unchanged, there are hints about a new 12GB RAM variant that recently appeared on Geekbench. Overall, it appears to be a notable upgrade from the Galaxy A54.

The phone launches next Monday

As mentioned at the beginning, Samsung has already announced a March 11 launch of the Galaxy A55. It will debut alongside the Galaxy A35. Sales may begin about a week later, though the US release may take longer. Both phones will arrive with Android 14 and receive four Android OS updates, i.e., up to Android 18. It’s highly unlikely that Google is getting rid of this page. It seems more likely that this is just a bug that Google will have to fix. In any case, the latest Google update is not available for everyone just yet. For starters, Pixel 5a users haven’t seen it yet. Also, if you live in the US, you will have to wait until March 11th to receive the update. Hopefully, by then, Google would have figured out the battery page issue and fixed it.

Hackers Exploiting iOS 0-Day To Attack iPhones

Apple releases emergency fixes to address two new zero-day vulnerabilities in iOS that impact iPhones.

The two zero-day vulnerabilities were discovered in RTKit, tracked as CVE-2024-23296, and the iOS Kernel, tracked as CVE-2024-23225.

If exploited by an attacker with kernel read and write privileges, this zero-day might also be used to bypass kernel memory protections.

“Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been exploited,” Apple said in its advisory.

Details Of The Two-Zero Days Exploited Vulnerabilities

Kernel CVE-2024-23225

An issue with memory corruption has been fixed by improved validation.

“An attacker with arbitrary kernel read and write capability may be able to bypass kernel memory protections,” the company said.

Impacted Devices:

iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.

RTKit -CVE-2024-23296

Enhanced validation fixed an issue with memory corruption. However, if an attacker has arbitrary kernel read and write access, it might be possible to bypass kernel memory protections.

Apple has not stated if the two zero-days were found internally or who reported them.

Impacted Devices:

iPhone XS and later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation and later, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 11-inch 1st generation and later, iPad Air 3rd generation and later, iPad 6th generation and later, and iPad mini 5th generation and later.

Fixes Available

Apple fixed the security vulnerabilities for iPad 16.7.6, iOS 17.4, iPadOS 17.4, iOS 16.76, and iOS 17.4.

Other Security Flaws Addressed

Apple fixed a privacy vulnerability in the Accessibility feature (CVE-2024-23243) that would have let apps access sensitive location data.

Also, when Locked Private Browsing is enabled, a Safari Private Browsing flaw tracked as CVE-2024-23256 exposes users’ locked tabs while they move tab groups.

The business stated that more patches that have not yet been described will be published to the advisory later along with CVEs detailing additional issues.

Apple reportedly wants the housing material to be thinner than the competitors. It will also help the embedded form of the sensors and the housing to look and feel more intricately designed. This product is currently in the prototype stage and reportedly includes various sensors that include sensors for motion, temperature, ambient light, health, compass, gyroscope, and inertial measurement devices.

Xfinity customers were given the gift of a free speed boost today, as Comcast confirmed that speed boosts were implemented for millions of Xfinity Internet customers on the morning of March 6. This is a boost to download and upload speeds at no additional charge.

Think about all the times you may have been bumped up to faster internet throughout your life. Chances are this is something that’s never happened for free. As most if not all of the big internet providers (Comcast included) never give customers faster internet without increasing the monthly bill charge.

Then again, maybe you or your household has never needed faster internet. In this case, getting a bump in speed has never had to cost you more money per month. But it’s for this reason that Comcast says Xfinity Internet customers are getting the free speed boost. Because it’s needed. More people are getting online now than ever. More services and products require an internet connection to work as tech continues to advance. So it would stand to reason that faster internet speeds would eventually become something more and more homes see as a necessity. Regardless of how you see it, Comcast is boosting the speeds anyway.

The free Xfinity speed boost varies by plan

How fast your internet is after this increase will depend on which plan you’re on. The speed increases are happening for most plans Comcast says. However, the increase is different for each. For example, Xfinity Prepaid customers technically get the biggest boost since they’re going from 50 Mbps all the way to 200 Mbps. That’s a big boost. These aren’t the fastest speeds, naturally. But it is the biggest jump in terms of how fast the internet will be now for prepaid customers compared to what it was.

For other plans, the difference between the old and new speeds isn’t as vast but that really doesn’t matter much. Faster internet is faster internet and it’s even better when you don’t have to pay for it. Starting with Xfinity Connect plans, the speeds are going up from 75 Mbps to 150 Mbps. If you’re on a Connect More plan then your speeds are being bumped from 200 Mbps to 300 Mbps. And if you’re on the Fast plan, then your speeds go from 400 Mbps to 500 Mbps. All of these increases will be available to both new and existing customers. So if you’re just signing up with Xfinity, you won’t miss out.

On the same token, existing customers get the same benefit as new customers. Which often isn’t the case. The Superfast, Gigabit, and Gigabit Extra plans will remain at the same speeds of 800, 1,000, and 1,200 Mbps respectively.

Google’s Pixel 8a to see price increase and come in four colors

Google’s upcoming Pixel 8a is now rumored to see a price increase that would put the cost of it over last year’s Pixel 7a. The phone is also said to come in four different colorways, giving users a wide variety of choices for the model that suits them best.

Google’s Pixel ‘A ‘ series phones have always been about giving consumers a less expensive option in the Pixel lineup. Something that offered all the best parts of the flagship Pixel phones but, without the flagship price. That is still going to remain true. However, the upfront cost won’t be as low as it used to be if the latest rumor is accurate.

According to WinFuture’s Roland Quandt, the Pixel 8a could cost more than €550. An exact price isn’t rumored. But it seems like it’s going to be more than an increase of €50. For comparison, last year’s Pixel 7a had a starting price of €499. In addition to pricing, Quandt says that according to retailer sources, the Pixel 8a will be offered in four different colorways at launch. This includes Obsidian, Porcelain, Bay, and Mint. This means that, if accurate, Google’s Pixel 8a could skip the Hazel and Rose colorways that the Pixel 8 is available in. The interesting part about this is that past leaked CAD renders of the phone show the Pixel 8a in Rose.

The Pixel 8a price will increase to €569.90

It’s worth keeping in mind that these are European prices. And since these aren’t coming straight from Google, it’s always possible that these prices will change. That being said, the rumor states that Google is going to start selling the Pixel 8a for €569.90. This will be for the 128GB model of the phone. For consumers who want more storage than 128GB, the phone will also come in a 256GB model for a slightly higher €630.

Now these aren’t massively inflated prices. But it might be enough to sway some consumers towards the Pixel 8 instead of the ‘A’ model. Especially with the sale pricing you can often find them at. Another detail that Quandt points out is that Google may not be offering all four colors in each storage variant. For example, the retailer that this information comes from lists the 256GB model of the Pixel 8a in Obsidian only.

Marching toward release

An exact release date isn’t mentioned but the phone is suspected to drop sometime within the next couple of months. For comparison, the Pixel 7a launched on May 10 last year. Google may keep the same time frame for release with the Pixel 8a. It’s entirely possible of course that the launch could be earlier or later too.

Whatever the case, it does seem like the phone is more or less ready to go. With pricing and packaging being leaked by retailers.

Epic says revenge caused Apple to block it from opening a third-party app store in the EU

Epic Games was hoping that thanks to the Digital Markets Act (DMA) opening things up for iPhone users in the EU, it would be allowed to create a third-party app storefront for iPhone users to access in the 27 EU countries. Per Bloomberg, Apple has blocked this move preventing Epic from launching its own app storefront and the game developer says that Apple is doing this simply to enact some revenge against it for making comments criticizing Apple.
Earlier today, Apple closed Epic’s developer account which Epic called a “serious violation” of the DMA. Apple had already shut Epic’s developer account in the U.S. and other markets back in 2020 after the game developer distributed its popular Fortnite game in the App Store with a link to Epic’s own in-app payment platform. Because this would allow Epic to bypass the 15%-30% commission that Apple gets for processing in-app payments using its own platform, Epic’s actions violated App Store regulations.
An epic lawsuit ensured and the result was that Apple had to make it easier for developers to link customers with third-party in-app payment platforms. However, Epic was not allowed to force Apple to install the Epic App Store on the iPhone. Apple held out an olive branch to Epic by giving the company a developer account in the EU thanks to the changes being made by the DMA. But that account has been shut down by Apple, and as we noted at the beginning of this article, Epic blames criticism of Apple made by its CEO Tim Sweeney.

Epic, of course, is not happy that Apple closed its EU developer account today and in a statement, the company said, “In terminating Epic’s developer account, Apple is taking out one of the largest potential competitors to the Apple App Store. They are undermining our ability to be a viable competitor and they are showing other developers what happens when you try to compete with Apple or are critical of their unfair practices.”

Epic also isn’t happy with the new fees Apple plans to charge certain developers. For example, the Core Technology Fee is charged when iOS apps are distributed from the App Store and/or an alternative app marketplace. Developers will pay €0.50 for each first annual install per year over a 1 million threshold. Epic CEO Sweeney describes Apple’s plans to comply with the DMA as “hot garbage” and a “horror show.”

Apple said today that it had the right to remove Epic’s “entities” from its platform due to what the court has ruled in the past was the game developer’s “egregious breach of its contractual obligations.” In a statement released today, Apple said, “In light of Epic’s past and ongoing behavior, Apple chose to exercise that right.”
