Meizu launches new flagship, possibly its very last smartphone

The Meizu 21 Pro is now official, the company’s new flagship device, and possibly the company’s very last smartphone. Well, Meizu announced earlier this month that it’s quitting the smartphone business to focus on AI.

Granted, the company could change its mind down the road and introduce new smartphones, possibly AI-centric ones. As things stand at the moment, however, Meizu has no plans to launch any new smartphones past the Meizu 21 Pro.

That being said, this phone is quite powerful. Let’s talk about its design first, though. It resembles its predecessor, that’s for sure. The phone has flat sides, and it’s also flat on the front and the back.

There are four small circles on the back, three of which are reserved for the phone’s cameras. They all protrude from the backplate directly, and they’re vertically aligned on the left-hand side of the phone’s backplate.

There is a centered display camera hole at the top of the phone’s display. The bezels around that display are also quite thin. The power/lock button sits on the right-hand side, right below the volume up and down buttons.

The device has a large AMOLED display, while it also includes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC

The Meizu 21 Pro features a 6.79-inch QHD+ (3192 x 1368) LTPO AMOLED display. That display has a max refresh rate of 120Hz, and its brightness goes up to 1,250 nits. It also offers a 2,160Hz high-frequency PWM dimming and SGS Low Blue Light Eye Protection.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor fuels this smartphone. The company is offering the phone in 12GB and 16GB RAM variants. The former comes with 256GB of storage, while the latter is available in both 512GB and 1TB flavors. Meizu is using LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage for all models.

A 50-megapixel main camera (f/1.9 aperture, OIS+EIS) is backed by a 13-megapixel ultrawide unit (f/2.4 aperture), and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (f/2.08 aperture, 3x optical zoom). A single 32-megapixel shooter (f/2.4 aperture) sits on the front.

80W wired charging is supported, in addition to 50W wireless charging

A 5,050mAh battery sits on the inside, while the device supports 80W wired charging. 50W wireless charging is also on offer, as is 10W reverse wireless charging. Quick Charge 4.0/USB PD3.0 PPS protocols are supported.

An in-display fingerprint scanner is also a part of the package, and it’s of the ultrasonic variety. The phone also has two speakers, while the mEngine haptic engine is also on offer. VC liquid cooling is on board too. Android 14 comes pre-installed with Flyme 10.5 on top of it. The phone is also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance.

The device launched in four colors

The Meizu 21 Pro comes in four colors. It comes in Glacier Blue, Laurel Green (vegan leather), Phantom White, and Starry Night Black colors. All models have a glass backplate except the green one.

The device measures 164.98 x 74.42 x 7.98mm, while it weighs 208 grams (vegan leather) / 214 grams (glass). The pricing starts at CNY4,999 ($695), and goes all the way up to CNY5,899 ($820).

Threat actors target and abuse VPN flaws because VPNs are often used to secure sensitive data and communications, making them valuable targets for exploitation. 

By exploiting the VPN flaws, threat actors can gain unauthorized access to networks, intercept confidential data, and launch various cyber attacks.

CISA (The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency), along with the following partners, recently warned that hackers are actively exploiting multiple vulnerabilities (CVE-2023-46805, CVE-2024-21887, and CVE-2024-21893) in Ivanti VPN:-

  • Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
  • Multi-State Information Sharing & Analysis Center (MS-ISAC)
  • Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ASD’s ACSC)
  • United Kingdom National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-UK)
  • Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (Cyber Centre), a part of the Communications Security Establishment
  • New Zealand National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-NZ)
  • CERT-New Zealand (CERT NZ)

CISA Warns Hackers Exploiting Ivanti VPN

The Ivanti gateways have serious vulnerabilities impacting all supported versions (9.x and 22.x), enabling attackers to bypass authentication, execute commands, and evade detection.

CISA found Ivanti’s ICT systems failed to detect the compromise, due to which they urged network defenders to assume credential compromise and perform the following tasks:-

  • Hunt for malicious activity
  • Run updated ICT
  • Apply patches

Organizations should be wary of rootkit-level persistence even after factory resets, as sophisticated threat actors may remain undetected for extended periods. 

Due to significant risks, it’s strongly advised to reconsider using Ivanti Connect Secure and Policy Secure gateways in enterprise environments.

CISA responded to Ivanti vulnerabilities by detecting the threat actors exploiting CVEs to implant web shells and harvest credentials. 

Post-compromise threat actors used Ivanti-native tools like freerdp and SSH for lateral movement, which led to full domain compromises. 

Ivanti’s ICT failed to detect the compromise, while the integrity checker and forensic analysis proved unreliable. Cybercriminals could erase traces by highlighting the unreliability of the ICT scans in indicating compromise. 

Independent research validated Ivanti’s ICT insufficiency that allows cyber threat actors to persist even after factory resets and upgrades.

Mitigations

Here below, we have mentioned all the mitigations provided by the cybersecurity researchers:-

  • Make sure to choose VPNs wisely and avoid proprietary protocols or non-standard features.
  • Secure remote access tools.
  • Restrict outbound connections on SSL VPNs for essential services.
  • Use low-privilege accounts for LDAP bind in SSL VPNs with AD/LDAP authentication.
  • Allow SSL VPN access for unprivileged accounts only to reduce credential exposure.
  • Keep OS, software, and firmware updated.
  • Minimize Remote Desktop Protocols and remote desktop service usage.
  • Configure Windows Registry for UAC approval on PsExec for admin tasks to curb lateral movement.
  • Develop a recovery plan with multiple copies of sensitive data in a secure location.
  • Enforce the NIST password policy for all password-based logins.

This phone is extremely well-protected, and it even has some physical buttons on the front. Those buttons are programmable. The company says this tablet is “highly customizable”, and that it has been “purpose-built to thrive in challenging work environments”.

It can withstand extreme temperatures

This tablet can withstand temperatures to -29C, and up to 63C. It weighs 590 grams, and it comes with both MIL-STD-810H and IP67 certifications. So not only can it take a hit, but it is also water and dust-resistant.

It has a 16:10 display aspect ratio, and its brightness goes up to 1,000 nits. This is an 8-inch tablet, by the way. Believe it or not, it even includes Getac’s hot-swappable battery technology. That’s not something we usually see in tablets.

65W wired charging is supported here

Speaking of the battery, this tablet supports 65W wired charging, and a charger comes with the device. The company also mentioned a “docking station for efficient use in the office”. We’re not sure if it comes with the tablet, though.

The Qualcomm QCS6490 chip fuels it, while Android 13 comes pre-installed on this device. You’re also getting 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS flash storage.

Various software solutions by Getac come pre-installed

The device is equipped with Bluetooth 5.2, Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax, and an optional dedicated GPS. Getac’s software solutions come pre-installed too, including the brand-new Log Tool, demployXpress, enrollXpress, GDMS, Driving Safety Utility, and OEMConfig.

Reddit Reports of Hacked Anycubic 3D Printers

Users on Reddit began reporting unusual activity on their Anycubic 3D printers, with many finding a text file named “hacked_machine_readme” unexpectedly appearing on their devices. 

This file contained a message alerting them to a “critical vulnerability” and advising immediate action to prevent potential exploitation.

Techcrunch has recently released an article to show that Anycubic customers are reporting that their 3D printers have been hacked and now display a message warning of an alleged security flaw in the company’s systems.

Content of the Hacked_machine_readme File

The message within the text file was clear and alarming: “Your machine has a critical vulnerability, posing a significant threat to your security.

Immediate action is strongly advised to prevent potential exploitation”. It also suggested that users disconnect their printers from the internet to avoid being hacked.

The vulnerability mentioned pertains to Anycubic’s MQTT service, a messaging protocol used for device communication.

The text file claimed this service could be exploited to “connect and control” customer 3D printers remotely.

In light of these events, the text file urged users to disconnect their printers from the internet until Anycubic addresses the issue.

The broader community echoed this advice as users shared their experiences and recommendations on various forums.

Company Response

At the time of the reports, Anycubic’s app was down, and users attempting to log in were met with a “network unavailable” error message. 

Anycubic’s representative, James Ouyang, acknowledged the situation, stating, “We are investigating very carefully. There will be an official announcement very soon,” but did not provide further details.

The individual behind the text file claimed the message had been sent to 2.9 million Anycubic 3D printers3. 

This figure is significant, considering Anycubic’s reported cumulative sales of 3 million printers, as mentioned by James Ouyang in a previous interview.

Implications for Anycubic and Its Users

This hacking incident not only exposes potential security risks for Anycubic’s products but also puts the company’s reputation on the line.

Users are now waiting for a comprehensive response from Anycubic and a resolution to the vulnerability that has put their devices at risk.

Google is preparing to add messaging abilities to the Contacts widget on Android. The homescreen widget will show the last message from your contacts and let you open the conversation with a single tap. The app is also getting a minor UI revamp. These changes should roll out to users with an update in the future.

Google recently rolled out beta version 4.26 of its Contacts app for Android. The new update doesn’t bring many changes on the user-facing side, there are a few notable changes hidden behind flags. Reliable code sleuth AssembleDebug could activate these flags to visualize what Google has in the works.

Firstly, the “Individual contact” widget for Google Contacts is gaining messaging abilities. The widget currently serves as a shortcut to open the contact details, place a call, and open the default messaging app to send a direct message. With the upcoming update, the last message from the conversation will appear within the widget. You can tap on it to open the conversation.

The folks at 9to5Google also discovered this upcoming feature within Google Contacts beta 4.26 for Android. Once rolled out, you will see a notification icon on the top right of your widget. It opens a dialog introducing the new feature. “See messages on your widget,” the dialog is titled. “To see and respond to the latest messages from your contacts, allow notification access for Contacts,” Google describes.

Screenshots shared by AssembleDebug suggest the widget will also indicate the total number of unread messages. The last message will appear below the contact avatar and call and message buttons, with “+1” indicating one more unread message from the contact. The buttons, which sit at the bottom of the expanded widget, are moved to the top if you have unread messages.

The Contacts app gets a UI overhaul

Google is also working on a UI revamp for the Contacts app. The company has removed the hamburger menu from the top bar on the app’s main page. It is replaced with a search icon, while the “three dots” button on the other end of the top bar is replaced with a “+” button to quickly add a new contact.

Labels, which currently sit within the hamburger menu, get a dedicated button on the main page. It opens a bottom sheet with your existing labels and the ability to create a new one. Additionally, Google will let you hide the “Phone contacts,” “Email contacts,” and “Company” chips at the top with a new button. The email chip also opens a bottom sheet for your email contacts. There is no telling when these changes will roll out to users.

This information comes from SamMobile, as the site claims to have obtained this information. The source claims that it can “exclusively confirm that the next Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event will happen in early July 2024”.

Why is this surprising? Well, last year’s event occurred on July 26, so late July. The year before that, the event happened in August. So Samsung seems to be moving its second Unpacked event of the year to earlier dates year after year.

SamMobile also notes that the event could happen in the second week of the month and that these events usually happen on Wednesdays. This points to July 10 as an event date, but we’ll see.

The summer Olympics changed Samsung’s plans, it seems

Why the change? Well, the source notes that it could be because of the Olympics. The Olympic Games start on July 26, which is also a Wednesday, and Samsung wants to wrap things up before the Olympics start.

In addition to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, Samsung is also planning to announce the Galaxy Ring during that event. That was not confirmed just yet, but Samsung did say that the Galaxy Ring is coming later this year. That’s the only big hardware event Samsung will host later this year, and it makes all the sense in the world.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is tipped to be lighter and wider than its predecessor. Its cover display will be wider, which is a change many have been waiting for. We don’t have much information about the Galaxy Z Flip 6 just yet, but no major changes are expected.

With that being said, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will look very similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, it seems. The sides will still be flat, but it seems like Samsung will go for slightly rounded edges of those sides, rather than chamfered edges. It will use the same approach as for the Galaxy S24. That should make the phone rather comfortable to hold and use.

The two rear cameras sit in the same spot as on the current-gen model. The same goes for the LED flash. Even the cover display has the same shape as it currently has, it has the so-called folder look.

The bezels on the front are thin, and a punch hole is once again centered at the top of the display. A Type-C USB port sits at the bottom, along with the main speaker. The power/lock button and volume rocker buttons are on the right. The power/lock button also doubles as a fingerprint scanner, which is why it doesn’t protrude like the volume keys.

The overall design is not much different

The phone also has one extra microphone at the top, compared to its predecessors, there are two up there now. The SIM cards will be accessible from the left, as that’s where the SIM card tray is located.

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 is said to measure around 165 x 71.1 x 7.4mm. That is very close to the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s measurements, though it’s a bit thicker at 7.4mm, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 was 6.9mm thick (without the camera bump).

It seems like the cover display will retain its 3.4-inch size, and the same will likely happen with the main 6.7-inch display. The phone is expected to launch in early July, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 6, and the Galaxy Ring.

In most cases, the feature should be available on your Android phone. However, if you don’t see the feature, you’ll want to update the app to the latest version and start searching for messages by date.

How to search for messages by date on WhatsApp?

To use this feature, open the chat you want to explore. Next, tap the search icon. In the search bar’s top right corner, find and select the calendar icon. This action brings up a calendar view where you can pick the date you want. Once you’ve chosen the date, tap Jump to date. Now, messages from that particular day will show up, making it easy for you to browse through past conversations smoothly and quickly.

Moreover, several updates are in the pipeline. As such, WhatsApp is reportedly working on Favorites which will let users add three filters at the top of users chat lists.

CutOut.Pro, an AI-powered platform specializing in image and video editing, faced a hacker’s claim of a data breach on February 27, 2024.

An individual who identifies themselves as KryptonZambie has come forward, claiming that they have successfully breached CutOut.Pro, a Singapore-based platform known for its AI-powered tools catering to visual design and content creation, particularly in the realms of image and video editing.

The data trove extracted from the breach has been leaked on notorious cybercrime and hacker forums, including Breach Forums, and is currently circulating within Russian language forums.

What’s in the data?

Regarding the contents of the leaked data, an in-depth analysis conducted by Hackread.com reveals that the records comprise the following information:

  • Full names
  • IP addresses
  • Email addresses
  • Password hashes
  • Data of account sign-up

Contrary to the hacker’s claims in their listing, the analysis conducted by Hackread indicates that the leaked data does not include phone numbers, API access, or app keys.

CutOut.Pro Response to Hackread.com

Hackread.com has been monitoring the situation since the hacker’s disclosure on February 27th, 2024, and thereupon reached out to CutOut.Pro for their perspective. The company’s marketing department responded the following day, denying any evidence of a data breach and labelling the leak as a “clear scam.”

In addition, the company refuted the hacker’s claims by stating that they “never received any emails from users stating that their accounts have been hacked or their information leaked.”

However, Hackread.com provided a sample of the data to the company’s department and emphasized that users might not have contacted them due to the encrypted nature of passwords on CutOut.Pro. This encryption could potentially prolong the process for hackers attempting to decipher the passwords.

Following the exchange of information, Hackread.com did not receive further communication from CutOut.Pro regarding the matter.

Does the data belong to CutOut.Pro?

While CutOut.Pro has not officially confirmed the authenticity of the data breach, evidence suggests that the breach is legitimate and the data likely belongs to CutOut.Pro. This conclusion is supported by the presence of numerous email addresses hosted on @CutOut.Pro domains within the leaked data.

Furthermore, the fact that HaveIbeenPwned has indexed the data on its platform adds weight to the likelihood of the breach affecting CutOut.Pro users. As a precautionary measure, users with accounts on CutOut.Pro are advised to change their passwords on the platform and also update their email passwords.

Additionally, users should remain alert for phishing attempts that may masquerade as communications from CutOut.Pro. These emails could be designed to deceive users into disclosing their login credentials, posing a risk to their security.

For insights, we reached out to Nick Tausek, Lead Security Automation Architect at Swimlane who stated “This incident reaffirms the need for organizations that manage the sensitive personal information of millions of individuals to prioritize cybersecurity, shifting from a reactive to a proactive approach. By utilizing automated platforms, security teams can eliminate the need for complex coding, standardize threat detection and alert monitoring, and provide visibility across systems.”

Rising Incidents of Data Breaches

The beginning of 2024 has witnessed a noticeable uptick in data breaches affecting diverse sectors, including corporate entities and governmental organizations. On February 23 2024, a threat actor using the alias IntelBroker leaked 2.4 million data belonging to private plane owners linked to the Los Angeles International Airport.

Just recently, Infosys disclosed a breach that affected more than 57,000 Bank of America customers. In the initial weeks of the same month, two prominent US insurance firms, Washington National Insurance Company and Bankers Life and Casualty Company, reported breaches stemming from SIM-swapping incidents, impacting over 66,000 customers collectively.

In January, Jason’s Deli fell victim to a significant breach, exposing the personal details of over 344,000 users due to a successful credential-stuffing attack. Simultaneously, hackers targeted Indian ISP Hathway, compromising the personal information and KYC records of over 4 million unsuspecting customers.
