A Google exec thinks its biggest AI models could be on phones next year

Right now, Gemini Pro and Gemini Ultra exist in large data centers and can only access them through the web while Gemini Nano is small enough to be squeezed into a phone. However, according to at least one high-level Google executive, this may not be the case for long. A VP at Google believes that the company’s largest language models could make it to phones sometime next year.

In case you don’t know, Gemini Nano is currently on smartphones such as the Google Pixel 8 Pro and the Galaxy S24 series. Recently, several MediaTek Dimensity processes gained compatibility with Gemini Nano. Because of this, people are able to use on-device generative AI like text creation and translation. More devices will gain on-device generative AI as time goes on.

Google execs believe that some of its largest language models could be on phones next year

Large language models are gigantic in size and much too big to be able to fit on mobile hardware. However, Brian Rakowski, vice president of product management for Google’s Pixel unit, begs to differ. He believes that some of Google’s larger language models will be able to fit on phones at some point next year. 2024 has just gotten started, so there’s still plenty of time between now and next year.

“Gemini Nano is performing at a level that our online models were at less than one year ago,”  he told CNBC. “You can do a lot with these distilled small versions of the models on device.”

This makes sense, as we’ve been able to see some pretty powerful generative AI being shown off by our smartphones. A great example of this would be the Samsung Galaxy AI tools. There are several tools that generate text and translate spoken words with great proficiency.

Technology is only going to advance as more companies pour billions of dollars into AI technology. So, there’s no telling what sort of AI we’ll see on our phones next year. For all we know, AI models as powerful as Gemini Ultra could be landing on the Pixel 10 series

WhatsApp stickers to get an animated boost with Lottie support

0
[ad_1]

For the 3 billion people who use WhatsApp, a small but nice upgrade is on the way – improved stickers with clear and detailed animations.

According to WABetaInfo, the go-to source for WhatsApp updates, the latest beta for Android version 2.24.5.10 from the Google Play Store reveals that the app is working on support for animated stickers built on the Lottie framework. These will complement the basic WebP-based stickers already available.

WhatsApp is making stickers more exciting by adding Lottie support while still making sure they work well with WebP, a popular image format known for being efficient and high-quality. Lottie allows for more intricate and dynamic animations compared to WebP images.

Lottie makes stickers on WhatsApp more interesting by adding movements, transitions, and effects. Plus, you can make them bigger or smaller without losing any quality, so they look great on all types of screens and chats. Unlike traditional animation formats like GIFs, Lottie uses vector graphics, which can be scaled to any size without pixelation, ensuring crispness on different screens.

The feature to share Lottie stickers is currently under development and will be available in a future update of the app. In addition to implementing Lottie support for stickers, WhatsApp is also working on support for animated emojis.

Messaging apps are evolving beyond text, images, and videos. Many apps now support GIFs, customizable sticker packs, and new Unicode emoji additions. For example, Google Messages, a key rival of WhatsApp, recently introduced a new feature called Screen Effects (for now, for beta users). This feature adds animations in the background of a message when specific phrases are sent or received, emphasizing the message’s intent.

As artificial intelligence becomes more prevalent in apps and devices, new ways of reacting and interacting are on the horizon. Meta, for instance, has already introduced AI stickers to Instagram, Facebook Stories, Messenger, and WhatsApp, offering users even more expressive options.

Porsche Design HONOR Magic6 RSR is coming next month

0
[ad_1]

HONOR has confirmed that the very next Porsche Design phone will launch next month. To be more precise, the Porsche Design HONOR Magic6 RSR is coming next month, in March.

HONOR confirmed as much via an official teaser video on YouTube. That video is embedded below the article, in case you’re interested. That video is short and it doesn’t reveal much, but… let’s take a closer look.

The Porsche Design HONOR Magic6 RSR is coming next month, video teaser appears

Throughout the video, HONOR uses a hexagonal shape, which actually reminds us of a honeycomb, as HONOR uses a ton of them one next to the other. It actually does look like a honeycomb.

At one point in the video, we also see what seems to be a camera island outline, and it has a hexagonal shape, with the pointy side up and down. If we had to guess, we’d say that’s the outline of the phone’s camera, and the backplate could have a honeycomb pattern on it.

It just remains to be seen whether HONOR will use something along the lines of vegan leather on the back, or will we get glass with a pattern on it. We’re only guessing at this point, based on this video, of course.

Its camera system will support 100x zoom

Another detail that was revealed in the video is that the phone’s camera system will support 100x zoom. That is expected, as the same is the case with the HONOR Magic6 Pro. The two phones will likely have identical camera setups.

Speaking of which, HONOR announced the HONOR Magic6 Pro for global markets at MWC 2024 yesterday. The company also showed off the Porsche Design HONOR Magic V2 RSR for global consumers, along with some other devices.

The Porsche Design HONOR Magic6 RSR will become the second product that the two companies have cooperated on. The first one was very well-received, based on initial reactions, so let’s see what will this one have to offer.

Google & McLaren Racing expand their partnership

0
[ad_1]

Google and McLaren Racing have announced the expansion of their partnership. This all happened at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The expanded partnership has been announced for the upcoming 2024 season.

Google & McLaren Racing have decided to expand their partnership

The McLaren F1 team has been using the Chrome browser and Android devices from Samsung thus far. Both for their business and race operations. Well, now they’ll also adopt Google Cloud and Google Pixel devices.

McLaren will use Google Cloud’s AI to “help visualize race data and provide insights across the team, including radio sentiment”, it is said in the press release. The two teams will also collaborate to use AI to “make processes more efficient and optimize resources”.

Google Chrome, Android & Pixel brandings will appear on the McLaren MCL38

It is worth noting that the Google Chrome, Android, and Pixel branding will appear on the McLaren MCL38, McLaren’s F1 speedster. Those brandings will also appear on the pit crew overalls, team kit, and driver overalls of McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

This basically means that the partnership between McLaren Racing and Google not only continues but reaches a new level. Google will continue to be an Official Primary Partner of the McLaren Formula 1 Team and an Official Partner of the NEOM McLaren Extreme E Team.

Google’s Android both in Barcelona has the McLaren F1 demo space

In case you’re in Barcelona, you can visit the McLaren F1 demo space in Google’s Android booth. Google and McLaren are inviting attendees to stop by and check out the booth.

In reaction to the news, Matt Dennington, Executive Director, Partnerships & Accelerator from McLaren Racing said: “We’re delighted to expand our partnership with one of the world’s most recognizable brands ahead of the 2024 F1 season”. He added that this will help the team’s focus.

Nick Drake, a Vice President of Global Marketing at Google said: “McLaren deeply values innovation, performance, and inclusion — values that resonate deeply with Google. By seamlessly integrating the best of Google services, like our groundbreaking AI platforms, Android, Chrome, Google Cloud and Google Pixel, across their teams in the office and in pit lane, we believe these tools will help take McLaren’s race day performance to new heights this season at every level of racing”.

If you need help creating a list in Google Keep, you can let Gemini give it a go

0
[ad_1]

Google is giving its note-taking Keep app on Android a smart AI upgrade with Gemini (via Android Central).

Soon, there will be a new “Help me create a list” floating action button in Keep. Its goal is to make it even easier when the time comes for creating lists for everyday activities. First spotted by 9to5Google, this generative AI feature “can help you jump start shopping lists, to-do lists, packing lists, and more”. Those seeing it on Android are first greeted by a “Welcome to Workspace Labs” prompt explaining the AI test.

For example, once rolled out to everyone, you can ask Gemini in Keep to help you with lists for:
  • “Packing list for a camping trip with 2 kids in summer”
  • “Classic movies to watch on Halloween”
  • “Spring cleaning checklist for a 2-bedroom apartment”
  • “Groceries for a week for a vegetarian family of 3.”

Right now, the “Help me create a list” feature that helps you with shopping lists, to-do lists, and packing lists, hasn’t got an official rollout date.Sharing sensitive or private information may not be a great idea, so, probably it’s best to keep that to yourself and not feed the AI model with inappropriate data (since human reviewers might take a look at the data).

Google suggests giving specific details for better results, and you can also give a thumbs up or down for feedback. If you’re heading to a particular place or with a specific number of people, just let Keep know, and it’ll generate results based on those specifics.

TECNO debuts new Concept that Reinvents Leather

0
[ad_1]

TECNO has shown up in Barcelona, Spain, at Mobile World Congress 2024 with a number of new concepts that it is showing off. One of those includes “Fragrance Leather”. This is a rather interesting concept that is created by combining fragrant microcapsules with the leather production process. The microencapsulated fragrant oil essence particles are added to the PU resin of vegan leather, with the proportion adjusted according to the concentration of the fragrance.

So what’s the point of this? Well, it uses three senses – sight, touch, and smell. TECNO says that the fragrance can last for over a year under normal usage conditions, such as non-exposure to the sun, violent rubbing, or prolonged high temperature. It’ll give your phone a cool new smell that’s different from just plain old leather.

That’s not all; TECNO is also showing off Organosilicone Fabric Leather. This is a synthetic fabric with organosilicon coating instead of polyurethane coating. Typically made up of a custom fabric base coated with a silicone polymer, the main advantage to using silicone fabric is it is easy to clean, odor-free, and has extremely low VOC. It’s also low-carbon, making it better for the environment.

TECNO has seen our boring leather cases and wants to improve them with color-blending leather. The company is currently researching Color Blending Leather through technical iterations of leather materials to create fluid art on the leather surface with rich color layers. This integrated color-mixing vision brings more fashionable and artistic technology to life.

TECNO is also showing off its Chameleon Coloring Technology again

On top of all of this, TECNO is also showing off its popular Chameleon Coloring Technology, which first debuted at MWC 2023. It’s the industry’s first technology to achieve full spectrum of pole-free color changing. This uses sub-micron prisms to realize angle rotation under the action of an electric field, scattering visible light of different wavelengths.

It can now achieve full spectrum color display, millisecond-level response speed, and long service life. It’s also very battery efficient.

TECNO’s new 3D Stereo Optical Grating is also here at MWC 2024, which uses special composite materials that are combined with columnar raster texture to achieve a glasses-free 3D visual experience, depth of field effect, suspension effect, change map, color change, and other visual effects.

All of these new concepts will be on display at MWC 2024 this week. And we will be going hands-on with them later in the week.

TECNO’s new AI-enhanced Robotic Dog debuts at MWC Barcelona

0
[ad_1]

TECNO brought a dog to Barcelona this year. Unfortunately, it’s a robotic dog and not a real one. However, it’s still a fascinating robotic dog, and since it’s 2024, you know it also uses AI or Artificial Intelligence.

This is the company’s first AI-enhanced robotic dog, called the Dynamic 1. TECNO says that this robot embodies the company’s “stop at nothing” approach to innovating the technologies of tomorrow with capabilities that can enhance everyday experiences. The company says that Dynamic 1 is the perfect “pet-like companion of the future,” thanks to the smart home entertainment, assistance, education, and training that it can do.

TECNO merged cutting-edge artificial intelligence with a lifelike design inspired by the German Shepherd. This allows Dynamic 1 to achieve both high aesthetic appeal and functional precision. Dynamic 1 has some pretty powerful torque output at 45 N.m/kg and also has a pretty sophisticated cooling system in the knee joints that enables the robot to mirror a dog’s natural movements, like climbing the stairs, bowing, and handshaking.

TECNO uses Intel’s RealSense depth camera for obstacle detection

The Dynamic 1 is able to use an AI HyperSense Fusion System that can ensure that each movement is as stable as it is spirited. It also uses the Intel RealSense D430 depth camera, dual optical sensors, and infrared sensors for comprehensive obstacle detection and safe navigation.

Inside the dog is an 8-core high-performance ARM CPU that is going to enable dynamic stability, rapid post-fall recovery, and speeds of up to 3.7m/s (around 12.1 ft/s). It also uses a 15,000mAh capacity battery that will get you about 90 minutes of use. The modular design of Dynamic 1 allows for quick battery exchanges and simultaneous charging, which helps to minimize downtime.

Finally, Dynamic 1 also has an innovative headlight system, which serves two purposes. Firstly, it’s used to illuminate its path so it can see where it’s going. It’s also used as an indicator of interaction. TECNO has also included four microphones and advanced AI-driven voice recognition algorithms that ensure outstanding voice control responsiveness.

TECNO is showing off Dynamic 1 and doing demos at its booth at Mobile World Congress this week in Barcelona. So we’ll get a closer look later this week at how impressive this robotic dog is.

X rolls out new search filters, starting with premium subscribers on iOS

0
[ad_1]

If you’re an X premium user, get ready for a treat, as the social media platform is rolling out another update to make the experience on the app more convenient.

As shared by X designer Andrea Conway (via The Verge), X is introducing new search filters, with premium iOS users getting the feature first. This feature allows users to sort through posts based on criteria like date, language, location, post activity, and more.

The new search filters will enhance the convenience of searching on the platform. However, similar to many recent updates and new features, it will be exclusive to paying users, at least for the time being. What do I mean? Well, just recently, X started rolling out audio and video calls to all its users, despite the feature being released only for premium users at the beginning. Since Elon Musk acquired Twitter, he has been working towards transforming the platform into an “everything app” akin to the Chinese app WeChat. WeChat serves as an instant messaging, social media, and mobile payment platform. The former Twitter is progressing in this direction, having recently obtained its 15th money-transmitter license, which sets the stage for the introduction of new payment features.

And to compete better with video streaming services, there’s a new feature in the works on X that lets you pick up where you left off in videos, kind of like what you get with YouTube Premium.

X’s CEO claims the app boasts 500 million monthly active users. However, third-party data analytics firms like Statista estimate a lower figure, around 368 million monthly active users. Since X went private after Elon Musk’s acquisition, it’s no longer obligated to publicly disclose user data, making it challenging to independently verify the numbers.
