New Chae$ 4.1 Malware Hides in Driver Downloads

The original Chae$ malware was identified in September 2023, and its latest version, dubbed Chae$ 4.1, employs advanced code polymorphism to bypass antivirus detection.

Morphisec Threat Labs has documented its findings on Chae$ 4.1, an update to the Chae malware Infostealer series, as part of its investigation of emerging cyber threats. The report explores the new Chae$ variant, highlighting its mechanics, implications, and safeguarding measures.

Back in September 2023, Morphisec shared its analysis on a new variant of Chae$ malware, dubbed Chae$4 with Hackread.com. The malware targeted login credentials, financial data, and other sensitive information of e-commerce customers particularly in Brazil. 

Chae$4 was quickly evolving, and in its latest research blog, Morphisec provided details on the updates in Chae$ 4.1, which includes an improved Chronod module and surprisingly, a direct message to the Morphisec team within the source code. Version 4.1 is a significant improvement over previous brute force and basic obfuscation methods.

The infection chain begins with an email in the Portuguese language, claiming to be an urgent request from a lawyer concerning a legal case. The victim is then redirected to a deceptive website, (totalavprotectionshop/abrirProcesso.php?email=), where they are prompted to download a ZIP file. This website also functions as a deceptive website for TotalAV, directly delivering the MSI installer without the intermediary step of a ZIP file.

Another website, (webcamcheckonline), allegedly scans the machine for risks and updates the driver after scanning. After the victim clicks the BLOCK button, JavaScript gets executed in the background, mimicking a legitimate system scan, which presents a hardcoded list of files, creating the illusion of a comprehensive computer analysis of the device.

Once the scanning is complete, the attacker sends a message stating “Security Risk Detected” and prompts the victim to download an updated driver to eliminate the risk. The unsuspecting victim clicks on the button, which triggers a script named download.js to run the malicious installer.

With the installer activated, Chae$ 4.1 also gets triggered, and from this point, the attack chain follows a similar path as Morphisec discovered in previous analyses except for some advancements in the Chae$ framework, such as modifications in the Chronod module. After successful activation, exfiltrated data is delivered to the threat actor’s C2 and the Chae$ team panel login page.

The Chronod module intercepts user activity to steal information like login credentials and banking information. It spans over 2,000 lines of code and has been adjusted to steal credentials from specific services like WhatsApp, AWS, and WordPress. In version 4.1, the Chae$ team rewrote the module to be more generic and modular, dividing the logic into several classes instead of one class responsible for all functionality.

Chae$ 4.1 also employs advanced code polymorphism to bypass antivirus detection, and detect sandbox environments, raising concerns about its potential impact on users.

Galaxy S23 & S21 get Samsung’s January 2024 update in the US

Samsung is now rolling out its January 2024 security update to the Galaxy S21 series in the US. The latest security patch is also widely available for the Galaxy S23 lineup. Most other eligible models have already picked up the update globally.

Over the past three weeks, Samsung has released the January 2024 SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for dozens of Galaxy smartphones around the world. The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S21 series have also picked it up in many international markets. In fact, the former lineup has got the update in the US too.

However, the initial rollout only covered carrier-locked units of the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, and Galaxy S23 Ultra stateside. Samsung has now brought the update over to the unlocked variants too. The devices are getting the new SMR with the build number S91*U1UES2BWL9. It was S91*USQS2BWL7 for locked units.

Regardless of the build number, the content of the update remains the same. Samsung is pushing 80 vulnerability patches to the Galaxy family this month. These include one critical security fix and dozens more high-severity patches, five of which only exist on Android products from the Korean firm.

All of these security fixes are also now available for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and Galaxy S21 Ultra in the US. The update is initially rolling out to carrier-locked units on Verizon’s network with the build number G991USQS9FXA2. A wider rollout, covering both locked and unlocked units on all networks, should follow soon. The rollout for the international models began a few days back.

Like the Galaxy S23 series, the Galaxy S21 series is also only picking up the latest security fixes stateside. There aren’t any new features or functional improvements to talk about. Not long ago, Samsung updated the phones to Android 14-based One UI 6.0, so this isn’t surprising. As usual, you can check for new updates on your Galaxy phone from the Settings app.

Both flagship lines should get Samsung’s One UI 6.1

A major new feature update is on the horizon for the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S23 series. Samsung is readying One UI 6.1 for the devices. Debuted with the Galaxy S24 series a few days back, the updated version of One UI brings a host of AI features. Some of those may not trickle down to older models but most should. We will let you know when the company starts pushing the update.

EU blocks Amazon’s $1.4 billion acquisition of iRobot

Regulators around the world have become more sensitive to big companies acquiring smaller startups. This is primarily due to their impact on the competition. One of the latest acquisitions facing setbacks from the European Union is Amazon’s deal with Roomba maker iRobot. The EU is now set to block the deal. The giant retailer needs to reassure regulators that the acquisition won’t harm the competition.

In late January 2023, the European Commission noted in its press releases that it has “informed Amazon of its preliminary view that its proposed acquisition of iRobot may restrict competition in the market for robot vacuum cleaners (‘RVCs’).”

The EU will block Amazon’s bid to buy iRobot

The EU Commission initiated an in-depth investigation into Amazon’s move due to the fact that Amazon sells RVCs from different brands in its online marketplace. The acquisition might lead to giving an unfair advantage to iRobot.

As The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, the EU Commission has notified Amazon of its latest decision in a bilateral meeting. The decision comes after the retailer failed to offer remedies to the EU until January 10 to mitigate concerns around iRobot’s acquisition. Roomba shares dropped by 40% following the announcement.

In January, an Amazon spokesperson told The Verge, “We continue to work through the process with the European Commission and are focused on addressing its questions and any identified concerns at this stage.”

The EU has blocked the Amazon/iRobot deal to preserve competition. However, Matt Schruers, president of tech lobbying group Computer and Communications Industry Association, says the move “makes no sense.” Because it leaves customers with fewer options. Schruers added regulators “cannot sweep that fact under the rug.”

Amazon’s intention to buy iRobot was publicly announced in August 2022. Since then, US, EU, and UK watchdogs have evaluated the deal to examine its contradictions with competition rules. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) cleared the deal in June. Meanwhile, the EU Antitrust Watchdog is determined to block it.

Bethesda is the company that brought us the Elder Scrolls series and it also brought us Fallout Shelter back in 2015. The latter was a smash hit game that was announced along with Fallout 4. Since then, it appears that Bethesda wanted to merge two of its most popular IPs together, to create Elder Scrolls Castles.

The company announced this game back in September of 2023 and we’ve been pretty excited to get our hands on it. Today, it confirmed that Elder Scrolls Castles has had a soft launch on both iOS and Android. The game is available to download in select companies like the Philippines. However, for the rest of the world, this game is up for pre-registration.

Elder Scrolls Castle is like Elder Scrolls meets Fallout Shelter

When Fallout Shelter was first revealed, people liked the concept. You’re in charge of building your own underground shelter just like the ones you saw in the console games. You would gradually build out your base while maintaining a growing society. It was definitely an addicting title, and remains active to this day.

Well, after about eight and a half years, Bethesda is looking to revamp this formula with a new twist. Elder Scrolls Castles, as the name suggests, is going to take place in the Elder Scrolls universe. In the game, rather than building an underground bunker, you’ll be building a castle. You’ll build your castle room by room while assigning jobs to your subjects. The castle will grow upward and outward.

Along with doing that, you’ll be making decisions that will impact your kingdom. So, you’re playing the role of the ruler. Each decision you make will affect how your kingdom grows and prospers.

Along with that, you will be heading headfirst into battle. In the trailer, we see soldiers going out to fight dragons and other enemies. We’re not entirely sure what you will gain from these battles, but it seems likely that you will gain resources like money and other Goods. So, battling will be a pretty big part of the game.

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, said last week that the company has “ambitious” goals and “big priorities” in 2024. Now, the company’s CEO laid out seven goals for Google in 2024 by sending out a company-wide memo.

The first goal is “deliver the world’s most advanced, safe, and responsible Al”. It’s really not surprising that AI is at the very top of the list. AI has been the buzzword in 2023, and it seems like the same will be the case in 2024.

Google has been heavily focused on AI for quite some time now and is offering a ton of AI features on its Pixel phones. On top of that, the Gemini Ultra is expected to launch in the near future. Google is also expected to add a ton of generative AI features this year.

The second goal Sundar mentioned is to “improve knowledge, learning, creativity, and productivity”. This is more of a general goal, and we didn’t really get any particular explanation for it.

The third one is to “build the most helpful personal computing platforms and devices”, which relates to the company’s consumer products and the software that comes pre-installed on it. That is always Google’s goal and the most important one to many of you.

Google Cloud will also be a part of the equation

The fourth goal is to “enable organizations and developers to innovate on Google Cloud”, while the fifth one is to “provide the world’s most trusted products and platforms”. This one kind of relates to the third one we’ve already mentioned.

The sixth on the list is a goal to “build a Google that’s extraordinary for Googlers and the world”, while the final one is to “improve company velocity, efficiency, and productivity, and deliver durable cost saving”.

Some of these goals are rather straightforward, while others are more general. It all makes sense, though. Google is putting a heavy focus on AI and providing the best hardware and software possible.

We’ll get to see a heavy focus on Android and Chrome when it comes to consumer products. That’s something Google is doing every year, though, so it’s not surprising at all.

The Samsung Galaxy A35 nears launch with Wi-Fi 6, Android 14

Shortly after launching the Galaxy A15 and Galaxy A25 in the US, Samsung is gearing up to unveil a couple more Galaxy A series mid-range smartphones. The Galaxy A55 and Galaxy A35 are expected to go official within the next few months. We recently leaked exclusive official renders of the phones. The latter is now another step closer to its debut. The FCC has just certified the Galaxy A35 for a US release.

The American regulatory body certified the Galaxy A35 with the model numbers SM-A356U, SM-A356U1, SM-A356V, and SM-A356E. The former three are the locked, unlocked, Verizon versions of the phone for the US, while the latter is the global version. The model number is of the least importance in this certification listing, though. The FCC also confirmed a few key specs of the device.

As you might expect, the Galaxy A35 will boast 5G cellular connectivity. Samsung will also equip it with Bluetooth, NFC, and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity options. The phone will support a wide range of navigation systems and feature a microSD card slot for expanding the storage space externally. While we don’t have details, the device could come in 128GB and 256GB storage variants, paired with 6-8GB RAM.

The FCC tested the Galaxy A35 with a Samsung charger bearing the model number EP-TA800. It delivers a maximum output power of 25W. We don’t expect the Korean firm to offer faster charging on the upcoming mid-range phone. It has stuck to that speed for the past few years and doesn’t seem bothered to go higher—Plus and Ultra flagship models charge at 45W.

While this is all we can make from the Galaxy A35’s appearance on the FCC’s website, the phone previously appeared on the benchmarking site Geekbench to reveal a Samsung Exynos 1380 processor. It showed up with 6GB RAM and Android 14 onboard. Rumors have also hinted at a camera upgrade for the phone. Samsung could replace the aging 48MP primary rear camera with a newer 50MP unit.

The Galaxy A55 should arrive alongside this phone

If history is any indication, Samsung will unveil the Galaxy A35 alongside the Galaxy A55. The phones were initially expected to break cover in March but a recent report suggested a slight delay in the plan. The Korean firm may now be preparing to debut the new A-series phones in April. We should get to know more about the devices in the build-up to their launch.

Samsung’s Galaxy Ring to be very lightweight, come in many sizes

During the Galaxy S24 launch last week, Samsung teased its upcoming smart ring. Aptly called Galaxy Ring, it is a fitness and health tracker that you can wear on your finger. However, the company didn’t reveal much about the product’s specs and features. It gave us a glimpse at the first-gen model’s design and confirmed that the ring is coming soon. We now have more details about the Galaxy Ring courtesy of a tech analyst.

Samsung is readying the Galaxy Ring in a lot of sizes

Tech analyst Avi Greengart, who has worked for Intel and JupiterResearch, claims to have recently gotten hands-on experience with Samsung‘s official prototypes of the Galaxy Ring. The company didn’t allow them to take pictures, so the teaser at the Galaxy Unpacked remains the only visual of the product. However, the analyst has something else to share. They say the ring comes in “a lot of” sizes and is “ridiculously” lightweight.

Greengart confirmed that the Galaxy Ring will come in three colors and will be available in sizes up to 13 (22.33mm diameter). The bigger unit could be a little heavier, but Samsung seems to have worked on making the ring comfortable to wear. TM Roh, the company’s head of mobile experience, recently suggested that the ring will be a comprehensive fitness tracker for people who don’t feel comfortable wearing smartwatches while sleeping.

Samsung’s teaser hinted at the presence of a heart rate monitor on the inside of the Galaxy Ring. We also saw pogo pins for charging. The ring is expected to feature blood oxygen monitoring, sleep tracking, activity tracking, and more health features. However, it is unclear whether all sizes will offer the same set of features or if the smaller ones will miss out on a few. The bigger Galaxy Rings might have bigger batteries.

Samsung plans to launch the wearable later this year

As far as the launch date is concerned, all we know is that Samsung plans to bring the Galaxy Ring to the market “later this year.” Pricing details are still a mystery. Whether we will get an official announcement during the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 launch, only time will tell. The new foldables should arrive in late July or early August. We might hear more about the upcoming smart ring, the first product of its kind from Samsung, in the coming months as the company works on it behind the scenes.

The partnership enables Deloitte to extend this range of solutions offering customers Memcyco’s industry-leading anti-impersonation software. Deloitte and Memcyco’s pivotal collaboration combines the former’s consulting expertise with the latter’s cutting-edge platform for detecting and preventing digital impersonation fraud in real time. This alliance will elevate fraud prevention to a new level, helping government organizations, enterprises, and brands protect themselves from damage and safeguard their reputations from being tarnished through attacks that use phishing sites to target their customers. 

By virtue of their partnership, Memcyco and Deloitte will leverage additional solutions related to integration and cooperation, such as Deloitte’s Strategic & Reputation Risk Services. This multidisciplinary synergy ensures a holistic response to threats, capitalizing on each organization’s area of expertise and accumulated experience, thus offering more robust and complete solutions to clients.

Memcyco provides a platform for real-time detection, protection, and response to online impersonation attacks, whereby malicious actors use phishing, smishing, and other techniques to direct customers to fake pages that look and feel much like the real thing. These attacks trick users into giving up their personal data, such as login credentials and credit card information, which is subsequently used for ATO (account takeover) and other online attacks, leading to data breaches, theft of funds, and ransomware.

Unlike other solutions, Memcyco is singularly able to safeguard the “window of exposure” between when a fake website goes live and when the attacker attempts to use stolen data to access company web pages, using real-time alerts to warn users not to trust the spoofed site, as well as tracking attacker and victim activity.
