As the smartphone industry continues to ditch the 3.5 mm headphone jack, audiophiles will welcome the Hidizs ST2 Pro Digital IEMs. Hidizs has previously been known for other audio products like DAPs, but has recently taken an interest in IEMs. IEMs, or In-Ear Monitors, are earphones that go inside the ear canal and create a seal, usually with a silicone or foam tip. An example of popular IEMs would be Apple’s AirPods or Samsung’s Galaxy Buds (barring the Buds Live).

The Hidizs ST2 Pro Digital promises excellent sound

Hidizs isn’t really a big name in the IEM market, but their previous products show promise. The Hidizs MS5 are a pair of wired IEMs that deliver excellent sound and give competition to other $300 products. Though slightly tuned more in favor of a consumer-centric, “exciting” sound signature, it still packs a punch. Clarity is great, and imaging and instrument separation is also up to the mark.

Competitors lean more towards a neutral sound signature for more “clinical listening”. The MS5, on the other hand, is geared towards bass heads. It is able to reproduce bass and sub-bass cleanly and accurately without losing the oomph. It also looks great, and is built quite sturdily. They combine metal and resin for a tough pair of earphones resistant to falls. If the MS5 is anything to go by, we can expect the Hidizs ST2 Pro Digital to be about the same in technical capabilities.

Why choose USB-C over wireless?

While most consumers have long since moved on to Bluetooth audio gear, audiophiles cling to wired headphones. This is because of multiple reasons, many of which average users aren’t even aware of. For starters, wired audio gear is able to transmit lossless audio, while even the LDAC codec on Bluetooth isn’t quite there yet. Because of lossless transmission, wired audio gear also sounds much better and at a cheaper cost than wireless alternatives. This is also because wired earphones and headphones do not require batteries and built-in DACs.

Latency is another reason wired is superior to wireless. Though apps like YouTube compensate for Bluetooth audio lag by delaying video playback, games cannot do the same without introducing input lag. So people who play competitive games on their phones prefer wired audio over wireless.

There is currently no release date or info on availability for the ST2. However, TechRadar reports the company is releasing its USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter DAC in February. This DAC promises to deliver high quality sound, and could be a much more convenient replacement for the USB-C dongles you can buy today.

TCL has a new 115-inch TV that Probably Weighs More Than You!

On Monday, at CES 2024, TCL announced a set of new TVs. As one typically does at CES, it is the Consumer Electronics Show after all. But when so many other companies are releasing new TVs at CES today, you really have to grab our attention, and TCL did. It announced the new TCL QM8 TV, which now comes in a 115-inch size. The official model number is 115QM89. We don’t have pricing or availability yet, but TCL has told me that they will be pricing this pretty cheap for what it is. So expect a few thousand and not a few tens of thousands here.

As you might expect, this is a heavy TV, too. It’s technically about four times the size of a 65-inch TV since TVs are measured diagonally. That means this TV is a few hundred pounds, around 250 lbs actually. So it probably weights more than you.

What really catches your eye with the 115QM89 is the sheer size and brightness. This is a 115-inch TV, which is just massive and the largest single display on the market today. There are other larger TVs, like Samsung’s The Wall, but that use multiple smaller display panels that connect together. With this TV, TCL is touting 5,000 nits of peak brightness, which is absolutely incredible. No matter how much ambient lighting you have in a room, you’re going to be able to see this TV.

That’s not the only large TV TCL is announcing today

TCL also has a couple of other large TVs on display at CES this week, which includes a pair of 98-inch TVs in the QM8 and QM7 lineup. The QM7 is essentially a smaller upgrade to last year’s QM7 lineup. This one uses premium High Zone QD Mini LED with precise control of up to 1,500+ Zones. It also has a new High Brightness Ultra LED Backlight that also has incredible brightness with up to 2,400 peak nits of brightness.

The company is also adding a native 120Hz panel refresh rate on all screen sizes, with Game Accelerator 240, HDR Ultra with Dolby Vision IQ, and a 2.1-channel speaker system.

Then there’s the QM8, which is a slightly higher-end model from TCL. The TCL QM8 includes QD Mini LED Ultra for ultra-high zone dimming with up to 5,000+ zones. That is also twice the number of zones of the previous flagship level for truly inky blacks. It includes all of the features of the QM7, along with an Anti-Glare Screen to maintain contrast in ambient room light conditions. There are built-in Dolby Atmos speakers, too.

Finally, coming a bit down to earth, TCL also has the Q6 Pro series. This is a less-expensive model that still offers some really great features, and also comes in smaller sizes. Making it more affordable. The Q6 Pro series will offer TVs from 50 inches up to 85 inches. It also has all of the great features from the Q6 model, along with a Full Array of Local Dimming, which provides for deeper and more inky black levels. As well as about 33% more brightness with 600 peak nits.

Pricing nor availability has been announced for any of TCL’s new TVs. We expect that to happen in the next few months since these TVs aren’t going on sale right away. Last year, TCL’s TVs that were announced at CES did not go on sale until May, so we’d expect the same sort of timeline this year.

Lenovo usually comes to CES in Las Vegas with a number of laptops and a few interesting ones as well. Instead of a foldable laptop this year, Lenovo is debuting the ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid. This is a hybrid laptop that can run both Android and Windows seamlessly.

But this still isn’t your usual laptop from Lenovo. The ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid is a base system and a tablet that can work independently or together and seamlessly switch from laptop to tablet. Think of the Microsoft Surface; it’s pretty similar to that, except it runs two operating systems.

What’s attractive here is that the base station and the tablet both have individual processors, as well as RAM, storage, and graphics. Making it really interesting.

The Hybrid Station comes with an Intel Core Ultra 7 processor, 32GB of LPDDR5x RAM, 1TB of PCIe Gen 4 SSD storage, and the Intel Arc GPU. It does also include two USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4), and a combo audio jack.

Meanwhile, the actual tablet houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, with 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM, 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and the Qualcomm Adreno graphics inside. It does have a single USB-C port. There is also a stunning 14-inch 2.8K OLED touchscreen with pen support.

This is a two-product laptop from Lenovo

It’s a little hard to wrap our heads around this, considering it’s using both Intel and Qualcomm processors for each operating system. But it is a way for Lenovo to offer both operating systems without giving one of them the shaft. Android doesn’t really support Intel chipsets, and Windows doesn’t really work well on ARM chipsets like the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Lenovo says that you can use these separately. So you could plug the base into a monitor for a desktop-like experience while using the tablet as an Android tablet at the same time. It’s not something I’ve really ever thought about needing to do, but it is an interesting thing to do here.

The Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 5 Hybrid will go on sale in the second quarter with a starting price of $1,999.

Lenovo just slapped an E Ink Display on the back of its new laptop

Lenovo isn’t one that’s afraid to think out of the box, especially when it comes to CES. This year, Lenovo has shown up in Las Vegas with a couple of proof-of-concept products, including its new ThinkBook 13x Gen 4 SPE. This laptop is essentially the same as the ThinkBook 13x Gen 4, except it has an E Ink display on the back.

With the ThinkBook 13x Gen 4 SPE, Lenovo is leveraging E Ink Prism technology. With this technology, users are able to customize the exterior cover in various patterns. This includes creating a unique notebook appearance. Lenovo says that this is able to support up to a thousand different images, and that allows users to really express their creativity. Obviously, this is a screen on the back of a laptop, but E Ink is known for being super lower power, so this won’t impact battery life or interrupt the charging, even when the lid is closed.

Lenovo says that it will be showing off a few different design schemes at CES 2024 for the ThinkBook 13x Gen 4 SPE, and we really can’t wait to check them out.

Pretty powerful specs under-the-hood

Under the hood, Lenovo has included some pretty beefy specs for the ThinkBook 13x Gen 4 and the SPE model. The specs are the same; the only difference between the two laptops is the E Ink display.

Lenovo includes the latest Intel Core Ultra processors, with up to 32GB of LPDDR5x RAM and up to 2TB of Gen 4 PCIe SSD storage, along with the Intel Arc GPU inside. Unfortunately, there’s no option for dedicated graphics here.

It also has a pretty stunning display. We’re looking at a 13.5-inch “Ultra-Narrow Bezel” display, which is in a 3:2 aspect ratio and is a 2.8K display. It can be optioned to have a touch screen too. Lenovo has included four Harman Kardon speakers with Dolby Atmos support. Along with three USB-C ports (Thunderbolt 4), a combo audio jack, and a pogo pin slot for the Magic Bay accessories.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 13x Gen 4 will go on sale in the first quarter of 2024 with a starting price of $1,399. There’s no word on when the SPE model will go on sale, but since it is a proof-of-concept product, it may not go on sale.

NVIDIA promises unlocked AI potential with RTX 40 Super series GPUs

NVIDIA RTX 40 Super series GPUs have now been made official, with NVIDIA having announced the range of new graphics cards early in the morning on January 8. This was in line with a suspected announcement following an NVIDIA teaser on X. And months after these cards first popped up in leaks.

NVIDIA also isn’t the only one that’s announced the new cards. There will be Founder’s Edition models coming straight from NVIDIA. But as per usual with its GPU releases, it works with numerous partners that launch their own flavors. Sometimes with slightly different clock speeds. MSI is one of those brands. There will also be cards available from ASUS, Colorful, Gainward, GALAX, GIGABYTE, INNO3D, KFA2, Palit, PNY, and Zotac.

Prices will vary depending on which brand you buy. But Founder’s Edition models will start at $599 for the RTX 4070 Super card. NVIDIA is also releasing an RTX 4070 Ti Super and this will start at $799, with the RTX 4080 Super starting at $999. Launch dates are also different for each card. The RTX 4070 Super will shelves first on January 17. Meanwhile, you’ll have to wait until January 24 and January 31 for the RTX 4070 Ti Super and RTX 4080 Super respectively.

NVIDIA says RTX 40 Super Series GPUs will deliver “unlocked AI potential” on Windows

AI is the name of the game with computing these days and it’s extending across CPUs and GPUs. Although it’s hardly new. NVIDIA has been integrating AI-powered features in its graphics cards for a few years now. But it seems to be taking a more measured approach to highlighting all the AI advancements than it used to.

“The new GeForce RTX SUPER GPUs are the ultimate way to experience AI on PCs,” NVIDIA says. These new cards use specialized Tensor AI Cores that deliver “up to AI TOPS” which NVIDIA says delivers “transformative capabilities for AI in gaming.” You’ll see this manifested in the DLSS software which uses AI upscaling to help boost frames per second. And because of that, you can keep graphics settings higher to find a nice balanced middle ground.

In comparing these to the older 40 series cards, NVIDIA says the RTX 4070 Super has 20% more cores than the regular RTX 4070. It’s also supposed to be 1.5x faster than the older card with the DLSS 3 features enabled. If you want to run your games at higher graphics settings, you’ll need to bump up to the RTX 4070 Super Ti. This should also provide significantly increased frame rates for 1440p resolution in games, and “up to 4K” according to NVIDIA. Fully ray-traced games in 4K meanwhile will require the RTX 4080 Super.

NVIDIA says it will sell the Founder’s Edition cards directly and you’ll be able to get them at some select retailers too.

OPPO announced two new smartphones today, the OPPO Find X7 and OPPO Find X7 Ultra. We’ve already covered the launches of both devices. We’re here to take a closer look at the OPPO Find X7 Ultra specifications, as there’s plenty to talk about here.

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra comes with a truly powerful set of specs, with the emphasis on cameras

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra is fueled by Qualcomm’s most powerful processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. OPPO is also using LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 flash storage here. Three variants are available. A 12GB RAM model comes with 256GB of storage. The 16GB RAM model is available in both 256GB and 512GB storage flavors.

There is a 6.82-inch QHD+ (3168 x 1440) LTPO AMOLED display used here. That display is curved, and has a centered display camera hole. It supports refresh rates from 1 to 120Hz, and has a 240Hz touch sampling rate. This display has a theoretical peak brightness of 4,500 nits. Its peak brightness in HDR mode is 2,600 nits, while regular peak brightness is a 1,600 nits. A 2,160Hz PWM dimming is also a feature here, as is Dolby Vision.

Android 14 comes pre-installed on the phone, along with ColorOS 14. There are two SIM card slots included (2x nano SIM). An in-display fingerprint scanner is also a part of the package. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra is water and dust-resistant (IP68 rating). Wi-FI 7 is also supported, as is Bluetooth 5.4 and 5G. Stereo speakers are also a part of the package.

The device includes four 50-megapixel cameras as part of its ‘Quad Main Camera’ setup

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra has a ‘Quad Main Camera’ system on the back, as OPPO calls it. The company wanted to offer four cameras that are equally capable, or at least close to it. This is also the first smartphone that utilizes the Sony LYT-900 camera sensor, and the first one to have two periscope telephoto cameras. All four cameras are 50-megapixel ones, by the way.

A 50-megapixel main camera uses the Sony LYT-900 sensor. It also utilizes a 1G7P lens, and has an f/1.8 aperture lens. OIS is also supported here. A 50-megapixel ultrawide camera uses the Sony LYT-600 sensor. This camera has an f/2.0 aperture lens, 4cm macro option, and a 123-degree FoV.

There are two periscope telephoto cameras here, this is the first smartphone with such a setup

A 3x 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera has an f/2.6 aperture, and uses Sony’s IMX890 sensor. OIS is also supported. A 6x 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera has an f/4.3 aperture, and uses Sony’s IMX858 sensor. This one also supports OIS. Hasselblad is also a part of the package, of course. A single 32-megapixel camera (Sony’s IMX709 sensor) is included on the front.

A 5,000mAh battery is also included here. 100W SuperVOOC wired charging is also supported here, and a charger is included in the package. The OPPO Find X7 Ultra supports 50W wireless charging too, and 10W reverse wireless charging.

The OPPO Find X7 Ultra measures 164.3 x 76.2 x 9.5mm, while it weighs 221 grams. It comes in Ocean Blue, Sepai Brown, and Tailored Black colors.
