Samsung has officially announced the Galaxy Z Flip 5 Maison Margiela edition, which we saw in leaked images earlier this month. It is a special edition foldable featuring unique external customizations, including the French fashion brand’s iconic numeric coding ring (circled 11) on the back. The overall design and internal components remain unchanged.

Galaxy Z Flip 5 Maison Margiela edition is here

Samsung frequently collaborates with other brands to create customized limited-edition Galaxy products. These products see a limited release in select markets where the collaborated brand has a strong following or popularity. Last year, it created the Galaxy Z Fold 4 Genshin Impact edition and Galaxy Z Flip 4 Maison Margiela edition. It followed up with the Galaxy Z Fold 5 Thom Browne edition earlier this year.

The Korean behemoth is once again teaming up with the French luxury fashion brand for this year’s clamshell foldable. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 Maison Margiela edition features a customized rear glass panel that shows the inner workings of a Maison Margiela jacket. The handset gets exclusive silver and metallic effects for a unique finish that has a strong style element.

“By creating a semi-transparent effect that unveils the hidden structure and details of the garment, the special edition captures the essence that goes beyond mere visual appeal,” Samsung says hyping up the phone. “It’s a reinterpretation of Maison Margiela’s design philosophy, one that values both the external visual aspects and the intrinsic nature of the device.”

The box, which itself is unique, contains exclusive goodies too. Samsung is offering a Flap Leather Case featuring a handwoven stitching design. The Flipsuit Case is accompanied by two Flipsuit Cards—one with a paint splatter design and the other with a minimalist silver finish. Both cards feature Maison Margiela’s distinctive numeric coding ring. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 Maison Margiela edition gets special wallpapers too.

The device is only available in three countries

As of this writing, Samsung has announced the availability of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 Maison Margiela edition in three countries—China, Hong Kong, and South Korea. It may arrive in a few more markets later. The 2022 model was sold in Frace too. After all, France is home to Maison Margiela. Since stock is limited, you will have to register your interest in the phone through Samsung’s official website. The company will reveal the list of lucky buyers on December 1.

If you are looking to buy this phone, be prepared to pay a premium. The exclusive accessories and rear panel come at a cost. In South Korea, Samsung has priced the Galaxy Z Flip 5 Maison Margiela edition at KRW 2,497,000 (approx. $1,924) for the 512GB storage option. The regular 512GB Galaxy Z Flip 5 costs KRW 1,306,000 (approx. $1,006). The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is available at KRW 1,783,000. Expect a similar premium in other markets too.

Qualcomm to stick with TSMC for 3nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4

0
[ad_1]

Qualcomm seemingly doesn’t plan to return to Samsung Foundry for 3nm chip production. The American chipmaker has reportedly decided to stick with TSMC, using its second-gen 3nm process (N3E) for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 next year. MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 will also use the same TSMC process.

Samsung fails to win Qualcomm back despite a 3nm headstart

TSMC and Samsung are the world’s top two semiconductor foundries. The former has a massive lead over its Korean rival, which has struggled with power and efficiency issues for years. Samsung is hoping to make up some ground in the 3nm era where it has a headstart over TSMC. The Korean firm also has a technological advantage thanks to its more advanced GAA transistor architecture. TSMC is using the older FinFET architecture for 3nm chips.

Unfortunately, it appears Samsung has still failed to win Qualcomm back. There have been reports that the American Semiconductor giant, which is a fabless company (doesn’t have a chip manufacturing plant), will use Samsung Foundry for the production of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. If not all, it could give a portion of the contract to the Korean firm, with TSMC manufacturing the rest.

However, according to the Taiwanese media, Qualcomm is sticking with TSMC. The entire volume of its 2024 flagship smartphone chipset will be manufactured by the Taiwanese firm. TSMC produced Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 last year and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 this year (all 4nm chips). Before that, Samsung produced the Snapdragon 888 (5nm), Snapdragon 888+ (5nm), and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (4nm) in 2021.

The new report adds that TSMC is rapidly improving its 3nm production capacity and yield rate as it welcomes Qualcomm aboard. It is on track to produce 60,000-70,000 wafers per month by the end of this year. The monthly production volume may exceed 100,000 wafers in 2024. TSMC’s 3nm wafers currently cost $20,000. The total usable chips produced from one wafer depends on the yield rate, which is said to be around 60 percent.

Samsung may find it difficult to challenge TSMC anytime soon

If the report of Qualcomm sticking with TSMC for its first 3nm chip is true, Samsung may find itself in a dire situation in the foundry industry next year. The Korean firm has yet to win major 3nm production contracts. It may get orders for Google’s Tensr G4 next year, but it is rumored to be a 4nm chip.

Samsung’s smartphone division is working with the semiconductor design unit on a custom processor for flagship Galaxy models. The “dream chip” could debut next year with Samsung Foundry’s second-gen 3nm (3GAP) process under the hood. However, a contract from its sister firm may not be enough for the Korean behemoth to increase its foundry share. Time will tell whether Samsung can challenge its Taiwanese foundry rival anytime soon.

Kubernetes Secrets Allow Hackers Access Sensitive Environments

0
[ad_1]

Kubernetes is an open-source container orchestration platform that automates the deployment, scaling, and management of containerized applications.

Besides this, hackers often target Kubernetes due to its widespread adoption, making it a valuable attack vector for compromising and controlling distributed systems.

Security vulnerabilities in Kubernetes configurations can lead to the following:-

  • Unauthorized access
  • Data breaches
  • Disruption of critical services

Cybersecurity researchers at Aqua Nautilus recently discovered exposed Kubernetes secrets in many organizations, posing a severe supply chain attack threat by granting access to sensitive SDLC environments.

In the upcoming webinar, Karthik Krishnamoorthy, CTO and Vivek Gopalan, VP of Products at Indusface demonstrate how APIs could be hacked. The session will cover: an exploit of OWASP API Top 10 vulnerability, a brute force account take-over (ATO) attack on API, a DDoS attack on an API, how a WAAP could bolster security over an API gateway

Technical analysis

SAP’s system had 95 million artifacts, and not only that, but even top blockchain firms and Fortune 500s were also there.

Kubernetes.io has a Secrets config section, and by default, it stores them in unencrypted form in etcd (API server’s underlying datastore).

There are eight Secret types, and security analysts focus on:-

  • dockercfg
  • dockerconfigjson

In this scenario, the exploitation potential varies, as the basic-auth, tls, and ssh-auth need cluster details. Meanwhile, for internal exploits, the service account token is critically valuable.

Eight built-in types of Secrets:-

  • Opaque
  • kubernetes.io/service-account-token
  • kubernetes.io/dockercfg
  • kubernetes.io/dockerconfigjson
  • kubernetes.io/basic-auth
  • kubernetes.io/ssh-auth
  • kubernetes.io/tls
  • bootstrap.kubernetes.io/token

Security analysts used GitHub API to bypass the 1,000 limit with the help of a recursive search. Besides this, the complex regex targets YAML files with dockercfg/dockerconfigjson and base64-encoded secrets.

Hundreds of cases were found by analysts in public repositories, highlighting the seriousness of the problem that affects the following entities:-

  • Individuals
  • Open-source projects
  • Large organizations

Researchers found 8,000 GitHub entries with .dockerconfigjson and .dockercfg. After refining the search to the base64-encoded user and password values, 438 records with potential credentials were identified.

About 46% (203 records) had valid credentials, granting access to registries for pulling and pushing. Many registries contained private container images.

Stakeholders were notified to address the exposed secrets. The dockerconfigjson field in Kubernetes stores Docker registry access credentials, enabling:-

[ad_1]

After teasing the RedMagic 9 Pro for a while, RedMagic has finally announced the phone. In fact, the company announced two phones, with some minor differences between them. The RedMagic 9 Pro and RedMagic 9 Pro+ were announced. These two smartphones not only look the same, but share the vast majority of their specifications too.

The RedMagic 9 Pro & RedMagic 9 Pro+ are here with battery-related differences only

The only difference can be found in the battery department. The RedMagic 9 Pro has a larger battery, while the RedMagic 9 Pro+ has faster charging. The ‘Pro’ model comes with a 6,500mAh unit, and 80W wired charging. The RedMagic 9 Pro+, on the other hand, features a 5,500mAh battery, and 120W wired charging. Truth be said, getting the RedMagic 9 Pro may be an even better deal, as you’re getting a larger battery, but immensely fast charging, even though it’s slower than the one on the RedMagic 9 Pro+. Still, both are blazing fast. All the other specs are the same.

The RedMagic 9 Pro units are made out of metal and glass, and quite boxy. The camera bump is nowhere to be found, while an under-display camera is also used here. The bezels around the display are very thin, while the phone has a number of gaming features. It has a 960Hz multi-finger screen touch sampling rate, and a 2,000Hz instant touch sampling rate. 2,160Hz PWM dimming is also included, as is DC dimming. That 6.8-inch fullHD+ OLED display also gets pretty bright at 1,600 nits, and it offers a 120Hz refresh rate. Yes, it’s flat.

Advanced cooling system is a part of the package

These two phones also include an ICE 13.0 magic cooling system with the first 10,182mm² VC. A new alloy fan is included too, and a waterfall air duct as well. The CUBE energy engine is scheduled through EVS, and so on. Everything here is made so that the phone can sustain its outstanding performance even while the most demanding games are running. The company even included an independent gaming chip ‘Red Core R2 Pro’ for improved shoulder keys, enhanced vibrations, enhanced sound effects, and more. The shoulder triggers have a 520Hz touch sampling rate, the sensitivity has been increased by 20% in comparison to last generations.

The company also included 1115K speakers here, two of them, and a 3.5mm headphone jack too. You’ll also find three microphones on the phone, in case you want to use them during gaming. The RedMagic 9 Pro can be fully charged in 35 minutes, while the RedMagic 9 Pro+ can reach a full charge in only 16 minutes.

RedMagic 9 Pro series image 3

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 fuels both smartphones, while they offer up to 24GB of RAM

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC fuels both smartphones, while the RAM offerings go up to 24GB. You can choose between 8GB, 12GB, 16GB, and 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Storage models on offer are 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB of UFS 4.0. Android 14 comes pre-installed with RedMagic OS 9.0.

A 50-megapixel main camera (Samsung’s GN5 sensor) is backed by a 50-megapixel ultrawide unit (120-degree FoV). A 16-megapixel under-display camera sits on the front side. The phone does include an in-display fingerprint scanner, and two nano SIM card slots. 5G support is included, and the same goes for Bluetooth 5.4.

They launched in China, but global model(s) are coming

The RedMagic 9 Pro and 9 Pro+ measure 163.98 x 76.35 x 8.9mm, and weigh 229 grams. They come in several color variants, including a transparent version. The pricing for the RedMagic 9 Pro starts at CNY4,999 ($704), while the pricing for the Pro+ model starts at CNY5,499 ($755). Both phones are available for pre-order in China already, and at least one will be coming to global markets. We still don’t know when, though.

Kodak to release its 2016 Super 8 film camera next month

0
[ad_1]

Nearly eight years after the initial announcement, Kodak is finally preparing to sell its Super 8 film camera. Unveiled in January 2016 at CES, aka Consumer Electronics Show, the camera will go on sale in limited quantities in the US next month. A wider release will follow later, with the company aiming to sell it in Canada and Europe, including the UK.

Kodak is finally selling its nostalgic Super 8 film camera

Kodak worked with industrial designer Yves Behar to revive its iconic Super 8 film cameras with a touch of modernity. At its core, it is a film camera. However, it comes with some digital functionality, like a digital viewfinder. The company showcased a prototype of the nostalgic camera at CES 2016 and said that the limited-edition gadget would be available later in the year for between $400 and $750.

The New York-based firm planned to release a less expensive version of the modernized Super 8 film camera in 2017. However, nothing materialized for the next two years. In January 2018, Kodak said the product is still in the pipeline but will cost a lot more. It shared an expected price of between $2,500 and $3,000 but didn’t go into details about the changes that triggered such a dramatic price increase.

Meanwhile, the company released a demo reel of footage shot on the camera. The footage had that grainy look of film cameras you don’t get with digital cameras, evoking nostalgia for people who lived in that era. Unfortunately, Kodak’s second attempt to release the revised Super 8 camera failed too, with no information for the next six years or so. It was believed that the firm abandoned the project.

However, Kodak seemingly never gave up and is finally set to bring the nostalgic Super 8 film camera to the market next month. Its global managing director for motion picture, Vanessa Bendetti, told The Verge that the iconic gadget will debut on December 4. It will now cost pretty much a fortune, though. The firm has doubled the expected price to a whopping $5,495.

You can sign up to buy the super expensive limited-edition camera

Sure enough, you can get much better cameras at this price. However, it’s not just about picture quality. Kodak is betting on the factor of nostalgia here. It is a niche proposition for extremely nostalgic filmmakers who lived through the challenges of shooting on film before transitioning into digital videography. While used vintage Super 8 cameras can be found for a few hundred dollars, it’s a brand-new hybrid product we are looking at here.

The new Kodak Super 8 film camera features a four-inch LCD viewfinder, interchangeable lenses, 16:9 shooting format, microSD card support for recording audio, and a Micro HDMI output for connecting an external monitor. However, it still charges via a MicroUSB port, which is an outdated charging mechanism today. It appears the firm developed the camera in 2016 and never bothered changing or upgrading anything.

As pointed out by 404 Media, one Super 8 film cartridge can shoot roughly two and a half minutes of footage at 24fps and costs about $35. The processing and editing charges will add to the overall cost of shooting with this vintage camera, which already is super expensive. The gadget is more of a novelty than a camera you take on your holiday trip to record memories.

Kodak has added a “sign up to buy” button to the new Super 8 film camera’s product page on its website, allowing interested buyers to register their interest and get notified about its release. Those who joined the reservation list in the past “must sign up again by Tuesday, November 28,” to maintain their position of priority. The firm says it will “contact customers in sign-up order when a camera is available for purchase in your region.”

Rare highly-preserved coins are expensive and collectible nowadays, and only serious collectors can afford some scarce pieces. In addition to the regular strike of 1885 silver dollars, the Philadelphia mint produced proof coins specially struck for collectors. The 1885 Trade silver dollar is one of the most sought-after coins for collectors. This scarcity and low supply creates high demand from collectors looking to add one of these rare coins to their collection. The 1885 silver dollar’s rarity, demand, historical significance, and appealing Wild West-era designs mean prices today often reach thousands of dollars for lower grade well-circulated examples.

Elegant, shiny, and heavy Morgan (Liberty Head) silver dollars are unique US coins minted from 1878 to 1904 and later in 1921. They are collectible, thanks to their age and uniqueness, plus they are an excellent investment because of their silver content and stable value. While pieces in an MS 67 grade minted in other mints cost several thousand dollars, the price of those with the S mint mark is estimated at $45,000 to $54,000. Because of their popularity, Morgan silver dollars are prone to countgerfeiting.

Since the San Francisco mint struck a modest 1,497,000 Morgan silver dollars in 1885, you can expect high prices, particularly for well-preserved coins. While those in circulated condition typically cost under $200, rare coins in the mint state always reach significant sums. Many 1885 silver dollars are valuable in circulated and uncirculated condition due to the coin’s silver content. But, proof silver dollars and uncirculated 1885-CC silver dollars are the most valuable in the series because of their scarcity. 228,000 Morgan silver dollars were minted in Carson City in 1885, making them valuable on the current coin market. Even those in circulated condition cost $450 to $660, while pieces in perfect condition often reach a price of $600 to $8,400.

Researchers Hacked Windows Hello Fingerprint Authentication

0
[ad_1]

Microsoft Windows Hello Fingerprint authentication was evaluated for security over its fingerprint sensors embedded in laptops.

This led to the discovery of multiple vulnerabilities that would allow a threat actor to bypass the Windows Hello Authentication completely.

The research was conducted on three laptops, which were Dell Inspiron 15, Lenovo ThinkPad T14, and Microsoft Surface Pro Type Cover with Fingerprint ID (for Surface Pro 8 /X).

Concept of the Vulnerability

Match on Chip

According to the reports shared with Cyber Security News, this vulnerability is based on the concept of “match on chip” type sensors. Microsoft eliminated the method of storing “fingerprint templates” on the host.

Instead, the fingerprint templates are now stored on-chip, which potentially reduces the privacy concerns of fingerprint exfiltration from the host in case the host is compromised.

However, this method also has a drawback as it does not prevent a malicious sensor from spoofing a legitimate sensor’s communication with the host, which can spoof an authorized and authenticated user.

Secure Device Connection Protocol (SDCP)

Microsoft developed the SDCP to secure the biometrics and fingerprint sensors.

This protocol consists of a set of standards and a secure communications protocol with goals such as ensuring the fingerprint device is trusted and healthy, and the input is protected between the fingerprint device and the host.

Secure Boot

Devices that support SDCP have a non-updatable bootloader in ROM (secure bootloader), which acts as the device’s root of trust.

Additionally, Microsoft issues a model-specific certificate and private key, which is confidential. However, it is used to sign the public key in a device-specific key pair embedded into the ROM.

Secure Connection BootStrap

This secure connection is authenticated and used to transmit the device’s attestation, which could allow the host to know that it is communicating with a valid device.

Furthermore, it is also used for additional biometric operations like new fingerprint enrolment and authentication.

Targets and Results

The first target was Dell Inspiron, which supports Windows Hello and SDCP. It has been discovered that when enrolling the fingerprints through Windows, it follows the process specified in the SDCP specification.

To bypass security, the initial process was to find the enrolled fingerprints. This was done by setting up a Wireshark dissector and checking the queries to the sensor from the Windows Login Screen.

This reveals known fingerprints and IDs that can be used to authenticate the machine. As this operation is unauthenticated, it leaks this information by design.

To bypass this security, researchers booted with Linux and enumerated the valid fingerprint IDs.

After this, they enrolled a new fingerprint using a valid fingerprint ID and made a Man-in-the-Middle (MitM) attack between the host and the sensor. Proceeding further, they booted with Windows, intercepted, and rewrote the configuration packet using MitM.

After performing this operation, researchers tried to log in as a legitimate user with the new fingerprint.

The exploitation was successful, and they were able to bypass the Windows Login security feature. Other attack methods were related to USB MitM and Custom TLS attacks.

HONOR prepares an IPO three years after parting ways with Huawei

The company said that it will “continue to optimize its shareholding structure, attract diversified capital, and enter into the capital market through IPO”. HONOR also said that the composition of the Board of Directors will gradually be adjusted during the process. Why? Well, mainly to “embrace greater diversity for meeting the relevant governance and regulatory requirements”.

HONOR announced that Mr. Wu Hui will serve as a director and the Chairman of the Board of the Company. Mr. Wan Biao will serve as the Vice Chairman of the Board.

HONOR did great in overseas markets, as well as on its home turf

So, what happened in the last three years? Well, a lot. HONOR has seen immense growth in overseas markets, a near-200% growth, to be exact. Counterpoint Research also highlighted HONOR as the only top five smartphone OEM to see growth in Europe YoY in Q3 2024.

HONOR has also made strides in its home market, as highlighted by Counterpoint Research. The company is showing huge promise, and considering everything that happened in the last three years, IPO is not surprising at all.

The company was sold by Huawei back in 2020

As a reminder, HONOR was sold to a consortium of more than 30 agents and dealers back in 2020. That was after the US restrictions hit Huawei. HONOR is not limited by the US ban after being sold, by the way.

HONOR is showing huge promise, and it will be interesting to see what will happen from this point on.
