Google has announced the integration of passkeys into its Advanced Protection Program (APP).

Enrollment Process for APP Using a Passkey:

  1. Ensure you have a compatible device and browser.
  2. Visit the Advanced Protection Program enrollment page.
  3. Click on “Get started” and follow the on-screen instructions.
  4. Choose to enroll with a passkey or a physical security key.
  5. Add recovery options during enrollment, such as a phone number, email, or another passkey or security key, to help regain access if locked out.

New Partnerships to Protect High-Risk Individuals

With the introduction of passkeys, Google has launched a new partnership with Internews to provide safety and security support to journalists and human rights workers through Internews’ global network of security partners and trainers.

This initiative will span 10 countries across Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance online safety tools and resources, such as APP and Project Shield, have already resulted in the distribution of over 200,000 free security keys worldwide and security training in 20 countries.

Pixel 9 Pro camera specs revealed by Camera FV5, no surprises

The Pixel 9 Pro may feature the same 50MP primary rear camera as the Pixel 8 Pro. The upcoming Google flagship was recently spotted in the Camera FV5 database, spilling beans on its camera specs. It appears to be an unchanged sensor from last year. The specs of the other three cameras are still missing. The phone launches on August 13.

Pixel 9 Pro certified with a 50MP main camera

Spotted by 91Mobiles, the Camera FV5 listing for the Pixel 9 Pro mentioned a 12.5MP resolution (4080×3072 pixels) for the main camera. It appears to be a 50MP sensor using 2×2 pixel binning to merge four neighboring pixels and produce 12.5MP photos by default. Most 50MP cameras do that, including the Pixel 8 Pro‘s primary shooter.

Other leaked specs also suggest it’s an unchanged sensor. The camera has an f/1.7 aperture, a 25.4mm (25mm) focal length, and 2.4µm pixels when applying pixel binning. By default, it should boast 1.2µm pixels. The certification listing further reveals that the camera has a horizontal field-of-view (FoV) of 70.7 degrees and a vertical FoV of 56.2 degrees. It boasts electronic and optical image stabilization (EIS+OIS) and supports auto and manual focusing.

Google Pixel 9 Pro camera specs leak

These specs tell us Google didn’t change the main camera on the Pixel 9 Pro. If you recall, the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro also have a 50MP sensor with the same optical footprint of 1/1.31 inches as the Pixel 8 Pro. However, the 2023 model has a larger aperture (f/1.7 instead of f/1.9). This allows more light to reach the camera sensor, producing brighter photos. It’s unclear if Google has changed anything at the hardware level this year. We shall find out soon.

The new Pixels are coming soon than usual

Google’s past three generations of Pixel flagships debuted in October. However, the company is launching the 2024 lineup two months earlier. It has already announced that the Pixel 9 series will go official on August 13. We are also getting a third model this year. Alongside the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, Google is readying the Pixel 9 Pro XL.

All three models will feature the Samsung-made Tensor G4 chipset with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB (hopefully) UFS 4.0 storage. We are expecting industry-leading displays manufactured by Samsung using M14 OLED materials. Google is also upgrading the lineup to an under-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Older models have an optical sensor. Leaks about the Pixel 9 series should continue to come thick and fast in the build-up to next month’s launch.

Samsung is one of the biggest global sponsors of the mega sporting event, which is taking place in the City of Love later this month.

A rumor recently surfaced that Samsung will celebrate the Olympic Games and foldable launch with a special edition Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Fold 6 in partnership with LVMH. The French fashion powerhouse, which makes luxury goods under Louis Vuitton, Dior, Loro Piana, Tiffany, Moët Hennessy, and many other brands, is also based in Paris. Since the Korean conglomerate has made Olympic-themed special special edition phones in the past, it all made sense.

It turns out the rumor wasn’t true. Samsung has officially confirmed that it doesn’t have any product with LVMH partnership in the pipeline. The company hasn’t partnered up with any brand on a special, Olympic-themed Galaxy Z Flip 6 or Galaxy Z Fold 6. However, the Samsung official who spoke to the Korean media declined to comment on whether it will produce a special edition phone on its own and distribute it to Olympic athletes.

Samsung has collaborated with fashion brands in the past

Samsung may not be making a special edition phone with Louis Vuitton or any other LVMH brand, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we won’t see it collaborate with fashion brands in the future. In response to a creator question about whether the platform will support long-form videos, Adam Mosseri stated that the core purpose of Instagram is to connect users with their friends and help them explore content they enjoy, typically through short videos. He further explained that connecting with friends and exploring short videos go hand-in-hand. According to him, users are more likely to share a short video they like with a friend who might also enjoy it, compared to a long-form video.

It’s not that you can’t upload long-form videos on Instagram. In fact, you can upload videos up to an hour long to your Instagram feed. However, if you want to upload a video longer than that, you will need to use the built-in Instagram editing tools to crop the video. Alternatively, you also have the option to upload them as a carousel post in segments.

It will be interesting to see how long Instagram continues to focus on short videos, especially as competitors like TikTok are continuously working on increasing the maximum duration of videos allowed on their platform. Recently, they have increased the limit to one hour. Will Instagram follow suit and allow even longer videos in feeds? Only time will tell!

Unsecured Database Exposed 39 Million Sensitive Legal Records Online

Millions of Legal Documents Exposed Online! Sensitive data leak raises security concerns for the legal industry. Learn how this breach could impact you and what legal service providers can do to protect your information.

Independent cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler discovered a non-password-protected unsecured database containing 38.6 million records belonging to California-based legal support services company Rapid Legal.

Fowler reported the findings to vpnMentor, according to which the database was left exposed to public access without any password or other mode of security authentication. The information accessed by the researcher contained court documents, service agreements, and payment information, including partial credit card details and PII (personally identifiable information) amounting to around 38TB of data and 38,648,733 records in total.

Further investigation revealed references and links to an additional storage repository, Legal Connect, which contained 89,745 records and a total size of 249.9 GB. For your information, Legal Connect is a back-end technology provider whereas RapidLegal provides filing services to customers and partner affiliates. Both companies appear to “share the same corporate leadership” and are connected, Fowler explained in his report.

The documents ranged from 2009 to 2024 and contained case documents, filed documents, notices, receipts, declarations, exhibit evidence, judgments, and other relevant case files. The service has allowed over 32,000 law firms to file or transmit over 7 million orders and 11 million legal documents to and from various court systems

Such a massive data leak can have devastating consequences for those affected. A folder titled Payments contained 737,389 files in .jsn format, including sensitive data like names, addresses, and the last four digits of credit card numbers.

Some records also contained merchant tokens, gateway data, and issuer authorization codes. These files are used for logging online payments and organizing transaction details, and adversaries can combine the data with other personal data for fraud or targeted phishing attacks

Also exposed were .pfx files with server names or partner services, using Legal Connect’s technology, possibly containing private keys and certificates used in secure or encrypted communications. In addition, the database contained an estimated 146,000 signed customer service agreements. The data could be used for targeted phishing attacks, harassment, malware, spam emails, or other fraudulent activities.

The databases were secured from public access on the same day Fowler sent a responsible disclosure notice. Fowler claims that there is no evidence of customer payment data being at risk or an imminent threat of fraudulent activity.

The leak of sensitive data in legal service companies goes on to show the need for a comprehensive approach to data security, including robust access controls, regular security audits, employee training on cybersecurity best practices, data encryption, and a well-defined breach response plan. These measures limit data access, identify vulnerabilities, educate employees on phishing awareness, and ensure data security during transit.

These members run promotional campaigns, provide moral support, and train workers.

Communication within the gang primarily occurs through private groups and chats on Telegram, with the channel we investigated boasting around 15,000 members.

Of these, only five were mentors, while the majority were workers—pawns in the grand scheme of the scam.

The Telegram Bot: A Scammer’s Best Friend

The Telegram bot is one of the most powerful tools at the disposal of these scam gangs.

These bots automate much of the scamming process, making it easier for workers to execute their tasks efficiently.

For instance, a Telegram bot we discovered can generate up to 48 unique, personalized phishing ads at a time in four languages for six different classified websites.

The bot simultaneously creates links for two types of scams: seller scam (2.0) and buyer scam (1.0).

Once the phishing links are generated, workers use the bot to send them to the victim’s email, instant messaging account, or SMS inbox.

When a victim opens a phishing link, the bot sends a notification saying “Mammoth online,” indicating that the scam will likely succeed.

The bot provides real-time updates on the victim’s actions, allowing the worker to track the scam’s progress.

If the victim takes the bait and makes a payment, the bot calculates the worker’s share of the proceeds and identifies the carder who will withdraw the funds.

The Lucrative World of Scam Gangs

The financial rewards for scam gangs can be substantial.

Workers, who are the gang’s primary earners, pay commissions to the mastermind, mentor, and carder and are refunded.

According to internal chat logs, the gang we investigated earned over two million US dollars between August 2023 and June 2024.

However, these figures are self-reported and may be inflated to motivate workers.

Despite the potential for high earnings, scam gangs face limitations imposed by banking regulations.

For example, the gang operating out of Switzerland is restricted by local banking rules, which prevent them from stealing more than 15,000 Swiss francs (approximately 16,700 US dollars) at a time.

Workers also have a minimum withdrawal amount, typically not bothering with cards with less than 300 Swiss francs (333 US dollars) in the associated account.

Turnkey phishing, facilitated by FaaS, poses a significant threat to individuals.

However, the protection measures remain consistent with those for other types of phishing.

It’s painfully obvious that the device is alive and well at this point, and that it will launch alongside the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25 Ultra, as initially expected. Samsung is sticking to a flagship smartphone series consisting of three smartphones.

By the looks of it, the Galaxy S25 series will launch in January next year, about a year after the Galaxy S24 series. Do note that this is just an assumption at this point in time, as Samsung hasn’t confirmed anything just yet.
