Confluence Vulnerabilities Exploited By Effluence Backdoor

Researchers have found a new malware exploiting Atlassian Confluence vulnerabilities. Identified as Effluence, the new malware is a backdoor that chains a known vulnerability with a newly reported security flaw affecting Atlassian Confluence servers. Once deployed, patching the vulnerabilities won’t remedy the malware attack, demanding utmost security vigilance from the users.

Effluence Backdoor Exploits Atlassian Confluence Vulnerabilities

According to a recent post from Aon’s Stroz Friedberg Incident Response Services, a new malware is actively exploiting two separate Atlassian Confluence vulnerabilities, chaining them to target vulnerable servers.

As explained, the researchers found the new malware exploiting the recently discovered vulnerability CVE-2023-22518 to gain access to vulnerable systems. They detected this malware when analyzing a known vulnerable Atlassian Confluence Data Center server for a client’s network.

The recently discovered vulnerability is a critical severity flaw that allows creating rogue admin accounts, leading to a loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Once deployed, the malware, identified as “Effluence” serves as a backdoor that spreads laterally on the target network and steals data from Confluence.

However, to achieve this goal, the malware exploits a previously known vulnerability, CVE-2023-22515.

As the researchers observed, the malware reaches the target system and embeds a novel web shell that hijacks the underlying Apache Tomcat webserver, which positions itself between the Tomcat and Confluence. Thus, it becomes available on every web page, including unauthenticated pages, while remaining under the radar as it doesn’t affect the web pages.

Nonetheless, as it allows requests to pass through, it triggers malicious functionalities when encountering a specific request.

Explaining the web shell, the post reads,

The web shell is split into two parts, a loader and payload. The loader acts as a normal Confluence plugin but utilizes a modified legitimate Java collections class, similar to IdentityHashMap, to hide its malicious payload. The loader is triggered via an overloaded equals() method, which decrypts the payload into a byte array containing a Java class, then loads that class via reflection—hence the raw Java class is never written to the filesystem. Once the payload is loaded, it runs a function which hides the plugin among Confluence “System Apps”, whereas a user loaded plugin would normally be among “User-Installed Apps”.

Next, it creates rogue admin accounts, removes users, executes arbitrary commands, reads/writes/deletes files, uploads unauthorized plugins, uninstalls plugins, extracts information, purges app logs, and meddles with user passwords to allow unauthorized access to user accounts.

The researchers have shared a detailed technical analysis of this malware in their post.

As explained, the Effluence backdoor threatens all vulnerable Atlassian Confluence servers, and once infected, patching the vulnerabilities won’t remedy the attack. Therefore, users must stay vigilant about the yet unpatched and uninfected Confluence servers to patch immediately. Whereas the other users must take adequate remedying measures to detect and remove the backdoor from their network.

ASUS ROG Phone 8 charging speed revealed… it’s unsurprising

The ASUS ROG Phone 8 charging speed has just been revealed. The phone appeared over at the 3C authority in China, where its charging speed was confirmed. The ASUS ROG Phone 8 will offer 65W wired charging.

This is completely unsurprising, as its predecessors offered the same charging. Both the ASUS ROG Phone 7 and ROG Phone 7 Ultimate supported 65W wired charging. Those two phones also offered 10W reverse wired charging, which will likely be the case with this device too.

ASUS seems to be uninterested when it comes to adding wireless charging to its gaming smartphone lineup. Now, wireless charging is not usually confirmed by the 3C authority, so there’s still a chance, but… don’t get your hopes up.

The charging speed is the only thing the 3C authority confirmed here. The phone appeared under the ‘ASUS-AI2141_A’ model number. The phone will support charging at the following modes: 15W (5V/3A), 27W (9V/3A), 45W (15V/3A) and 65W (20V/3.25A).

The entire ROG Phone 8 series will utilize the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC

We don’t have much information about the ROG Phone 8 just yet. What we do know is that it will be fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and that goes for the entire smartphone series.

We’re once again expecting to see more than one device, as we’ll likely get two smartphones in the series. You can expect a ton of gaming features once again, and top-of-the-line specifications too.

ASUS will likely utilize LPDDR5X or LPDDR5T RAM, and UFS 4.0 flash storage. Advanced cooling will be a part of the package, as will the shoulder trigger on the right-hand side of the device.

Now, the ASUS ROG Phone 8 is not expected to drop anytime soon. The ROG Phone 7 series arrived in April 2023, while the ROG Phone 6 series launched in July 2022. So, chances are we’ll have to wait until Q2 next year, at the very earliest.

Exynos 2400 will benefit from Samsung’s new FOWLP tech

Samsung has already announced the Exynos 2400 chipset for the Galaxy S24 series but it has yet to divulge its full spec sheet and features. Not everything is under wraps though, as leaks have revealed a lot. While the company may not share more details until the Galaxy S24 launch in January, a recent report has given us a new piece of information about the chip. It features the more efficient FOWLP (fan-out wafer-level packaging) technology.

Exynos 2400 features Samsung’s FOWLP chip packaging technology

FOWLP is an advanced chip packaging technology that eliminates the need for a printed circuit board (PCB). In Samsung’s current chip setup, featuring the FC-BGA (Flip Chip-Ball Grid Array) packaging technology, chips are stacked by attaching them to a PCB. However, with FOWLP, chips can be mounted directly on silicon wafers without requiring a PCB. This makes the chipset thinner, effectively reducing the power consumption.

Compared to FC-BGA packaging, FOWLP is estimated to reduce the chip’s thickness by 30 percent and the overall size by 40 percent. It also brings a 15 percent boost in performance, while consuming less power. This makes the chip more efficient and helps extend the battery life of the device. TSMC is already using this chip packaging technology and Samsung is now following suit.

The Exynos 2400 won’t be the first Samsung chip to feature the FOWLP technology, though. The Korean firm’s GDDR6W memory chips launched late last year also use the same packaging technology. It subsequently established a new Advanced Packaging (AVP) team in the semiconductor division to focus on the back-end process technology for its chips. FOWLP for the Exynos 2400 may be a result of these efforts.

Samsung may be looking to close the gap to TSMC with this move. Chips manufactured by the Taiwanese firm have always performed better than competing solutions from Samsung. They are superior at everything, from power efficiency and thermals to overall performance. It remains to be seen whether the new chip packaging technology helps the Korean behemoth gain some ground.

The new Exynos chip will compete against the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

The Exynos 2400 won’t be the sole processor powering the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung is using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (overclocked version) in the Ultra model globally. The other two models will feature the new Exynos chip in some markets, including Europe, India, and South Korea. Since TSMC is manufacturing the Qualcomm chip, Samsung has a point to prove with its Exynos 2400. Who comes out on top, time will tell.

Telegram teases upcoming app version tailored for the Apple Vision Pro

As reported by 9to5Mac, Pavel Durov, the brain behind Telegram, has teased a version of the messaging app specifically tailored for visionOS, the operating system custom-made for Apple’s Vision Pro headset. Durov spilled the beans through a video on his Telegram channel, offering a sneak peek into the augmented reality (AR) experience.


The teaser, unveiled by Durov, provides a glimpse of how the app will work on Apple Vision Pro. Judging by the visuals, Telegram is making sure the app stays in sync with all the design guidelines of the visionOS. The app dons a translucent look, adding a sense of depth to the Telegram experience on Vision Pro.Breaking away from the norm, Telegram for visionOS shakes things up with a sidebar instead of the usual tab bar. This sidebar grants quick access to contacts, calls, chats, and settings. Brace yourself for a familiar array of features found in Telegram for iOS, spanning media, audio messages, and the recently added Stories feature.

The teaser spills the beans on an immersive video player and animated AR stickers that go all out, stretching beyond the confines of the app window. Telegram for VisionOS brings voice input into the mix for composing messages, offering a hands-free option. Siri dictation and the system’s virtual keyboard take center stage for dispatching messages.

While the details are a bit sparse at this point, the clock is ticking, and with Vision Pro expected to hit US stores next year, Telegram has a bit of breathing room to fine-tune the visionOS app for a grand launch in the coming year.

Back in June, Apple gave us a taste of its augmented reality masterpiece, Vision Pro. The headset is poised to grace the market in 2024, sporting a price tag of $3,499 in the US.

SystemBC (aka Coroxy or DroxiDat) is a multifunctional malware known as Proxy, Bot, Backdoor, and RAT, adapting to attackers’ needs. 

Since 2018, this multifunctional malware has been active, and it remains popular in underground markets, with consistent annual incidents.

Cybersecurity researcher, REXor (aka Aaron) recently discovered that several ransomware groups are employing SystemBC, a Swiss Knife proxy malware, for their illicit purposes.

SystemBC malware adapts its methods but maintains core tasks:-

Gather system info –> Establish persistence –> Create a Socks5 connection to the C&C server –> Transmit data –> Await attacker commands or malware launches

This backdoor enables attackers to operate from their infrastructure, and over time, numerous groups have used SystemBC.

SystemBC usage varies with each attacker’s access to the infrastructure. Studied samples show diverse executions yet share consistent core functions.

Usually, when an executable is run, a duplicate copy of SystemBC is made and persistence is established via tasks or registry entries.

Some samples may use a packer or need deobfuscation/extraction without a loader or malware. 

Extracting from memory may be required, revealing identical copies in a temporary folder indicating malware duplication with dynamic filenames. 

Coroxy employs a Mutex control in all examined samples that prevents multiple runs. It may generate a random string or deobfuscate a domain as a Mutex, adding complexity.

Samples establish persistence differently, as some create jobs or registry entries, often using PowerShell to execute SystemBC.

In certain versions, SystemBC launches a duplicate in the following paths:-

SystemBC detects a2guard, a handy anti-analysis move to spot antivirus or disruptive software. It captures process snapshots, using ProcessFirst and ProcessNext to hunt for the binary. 

This grants persistence, process control, and info gathering, with deobfuscation and decryption for future network connections.

After pinpointing the connection location, SystemBC establishes it through a loop, usually targeting a known server and port, reads the report.

Though versions may differ slightly, the core behavior remains the same. However, the analyst found a focus on Coroxy’s relevance, with active discussions and inquiries in forums. 

Besides this, the identified infrastructure allows OS access for around $350 to $300, payable through active cryptocurrency wallets.

Niagara Launcher rolls out ‘Anycon’ icons for effortless customization

Niagara Launcher is easily one of the best launchers on Android these days, despite the fact it has its unique style, which is considerably different from what most users are used to. The latest Niagara Launcher update has been announced, and it delivers ‘Anycon’ icons for effortless customization.

The Widget Stack feature on the home screen now takes advantage of big screens. On foldables, for example, it can now show two stacks at once, the same goes for tablets. Your home screen widget stack will now also remember the last visible widget.

App search improvements are also being rolled out. Search corrects typos now, while it also allows searching for apps using the Latin alphabet, regardless of the script used in the app label.

You can also now choose Niagara Launcher’s theme colors, which will affect various aspects of the launcher. It affects the look of the Niagara Button, the alphabet, and several Anycon packs.

Various other ‘Quality of Life Tweaks’ have been rolled out, and a number of bug fixes. You can check out all of those in the company’s full announcement post. Also, do note that this update is available through the beta channel only for now, but it’s coming to the stable channel in the coming days. Samsung Galaxy Book 4 specs revealed early, in great detail

Details about Samsung‘s upcoming Galaxy Book 4 lineup have already started leaking. And now, we might have a glimpse at the specifications these flagship laptops are going to ship with. Samsung has been trying to make a name for itself in the laptop market for some time now with its Galaxy Books. It competes directly with Microsoft’s Surface laptops and Apple’s MacBooks.

If the Windows Report info is accurate, there are five new Galaxy Book laptops on the way, and they each pack some very impressive specifications.

Samsung Galaxy Book 4

The Galaxy Book 4 is most likely going to be the cheapest product in the lineup. It comes with an Intel Core i5 120U that can go up to 5 GHz of processing power and has 12 MBs of Smart Cache. Graphical processing runs on integrated Intel Graphics, and the laptop has 8 GBs of LPDDR4x RAM. Storage is 512 GBs of NVMe Solid State, and the display is a 1080p 15.6″ LED. The Galaxy Book 4 has a 720p camera and Dolby Atmos speakers as well. Samsung’s Galaxy Book 4 is going to weigh 1.57 kg (3.46 lbs.).

The next laptop on the list is the Samsung Galaxy Book 4 360. It is somewhat identical to the Galaxy Book 4 in specs, with a few key differences. Its processor is the same as the Book 4, but the RAM is now 8 GBs of LPDDR5. The NVMe SSD storage is only 256 GBs compared to the former’s 512, but the camera is now capable of 1080p and the 15.6″ FHD display is an AMOLED touchscreen. Weighing in at 1.46 kg (3.22 lbs.) the Galaxy Book 4 360 is slightly lighter than the Galaxy Book 4.

This is where we see the first leap in specs. The Galaxy Book 4 Pro has an Intel Core i7 155U processor capable of 4.8 GHz of processing power and coming with 24 MBs of Smart Cache. For graphics it uses the much more powerful Intel Arc Graphics. It has a 14″ WQXGA touchscreen display with a crisp 2880 x 1800 resolution. 512 GBs of NVMe SSD storage and 16 GBs of LPDDR5X RAM make it a very lucrative laptop worth considering. The speaker system is AKG’s Quad Speakers with Smart Amp Dolby Atmos. It also has a much better 2M camera and, weighing at only 1.26 kg (2.78 lbs.), it is the lightest of the Galaxy Book 4 lineup.

Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360

The Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Pro 360 has the same processor as the Book 4 Pro, and its display is has the same specs except it’s 16″ instead. The storage has been upped to a Terabyte of NVMe, while the RAM is the exact same 16 GBs of LPDDR5X. This laptop also uses Intel Arc Graphics, making it a very capable machine for both gaming or editing. It is heavier than the Book 4 Pro at 1.66 kg (3.66 lbs.).

Samsung Galaxy Book 4 Ultra

As the name implies, this is the highest-end laptop in the lineup and Samsung pulled out all the stops for this one. It comes with a powerful Intel Core i9 185H processor capable of 5.1 GHz and 24 MBs of L3 cache. But that isn’t all; there is also 32 GBs of LPDDR5X RAM and a Terabyte of NVMe SSD storage. The display is the exact same as the Book 4 Pro 360, but this time it is powered by an Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU. The camera and the speakers are the same as the Book 4 Pro and the Book 4 Pro 360. Understandably, the Book 4 Ultra weighs the most at 1.86 kg (4.10 lbs.).

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Book 4 lineup is shaping up to be a premium choice of laptops. If Samsung continues along this trajectory of promising mobility with capability, it could very easily become a top choice of laptop in the coming years.

China boasts world’s fastest internet at 1.2 terabits per second

China has once again saved a spot to be in the headlines for its technological advancements. The latest achievement is the launch of the “world’s fastest internet network” with speeds up to 1.2 terabits per second. This means that downloading a movie is now a blink-of-an-eye affair. Meanwhile, GTA V, approx. 100GB, takes only one-and-a-half minutes to download.

China lauds the world’s fastest internet network

Huawei and China Mobile jointly launched the world’s first internet network. The tech giant and telco also partnered with Tsinghua University and Cernet.com in the process. The collaboration helped achieve a “stable and reliable” bandwidth of 1.2 terabits (1,200 gigabits per second) per second, reported Bloomberg.

The speed is several times faster than typical speeds around the world. The internet network spans 3,000 km (1,860 miles) between Beijing-Wuhan-Guangzhou. Notably, it’s a part of the ambitious FITI project.

China’s latest achievement even surpasses the recent upgrade in the US which reached about 400 gigabits per second. Comparatively, China’s ultra-high-speed internet is roughly 3 times that of the States’. It is also capable of transferring the “data equivalent to 150 HD films in just one second” said Huawei Technologies vice-president Wang Lei, reported South China Morning Post.

Tsinghua University, Chinese President Xi Jinping’s alma mater, is promoting the project as an industry-first built entirely using Chinese technology. However, Bloomberg says that it has not independently verified the claims. Huawei is credited majorly for the project, per the shared statement.

This breakthrough in internet technology refutes the notion that 1 terabit per second ultra-high-speed networks would not be available until around 2025.

This super-fast internet network is a part of the FITI project

China’s Ministry of Education launched the FITI project, Future Internet Technology Infrastructure, in April 2021. Tsinghua and 40 other universities in China jointly launched the initiative.

The ambitious FITI is a new internet testbed led by Wu Jianping, who’s played a key role in advancing internet tech in China and Asia-Pacific. It is designed to not only be faster than current networks but also to lay the foundation for even faster networks in the future.

Google is trimming heavy: soon, Google News will be ending support for magazines and you have a limited time window to act.

The discontinuation of all support for magazine content in Google News will start a week before Christmas – on December 18, 2023 (via Android Headlines). Those who are subscribed to such type of content will have to find another way to access their favorite magazines.

In the remaining month (and some days), Google is allowing users to export and save their purchased magazine content. Those who have subscribed to magazines with interactive elements will be able to get a refund from Google.
