In February, Samsung joined hands with Google and Qualcomm to develop XR (extended reality) technologies and experiences for the future. It appears the collaborative effort of the three tech giants will bring us an XR headset next year. According to the Korean media, the company plans to launch the device in a limited quantity at the end of 2024. It may expand the production later depending on the market.
Samsung is gearing up to launch an XR headset next year
Samsung reportedly planned to launch its first XR headset in early 2024, possibly alongside the Galaxy S24 series in January. However, it delayed the plan to improve the product. Industry insiders believe Apple’s Vision Pro announcement in June (scheduled to arrive early next year) made the Korean firm rethink its product. It returned to the drawing board and is rejigging the headset with better design and specs to match the competition.
A new report coming from South Korea says Samsung is now preparing to launch the XR headset, codenamed “Infinite,” in December next year. An industry insider familiar with the matter suggested that the company may unveil the device during an Unpacked event in the second half of 2024. They likely mean the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 launch event in July/August, which usually gets tremendous media coverage and public attention.
Interestingly, Samsung has set an extremely modest initial production volume of just 30,000 units for its first CR headset. The company appears to be uncertain about the market for the device. It may be looking to evaluate the market for a few months before deciding on the final production plans. The Korean firm may get a fair idea of the market once Apple releases the Vision Pro. Meta’s Quest 3, which arrived last month, is its competition too.
Samsung’s success will depend on pricing and content
The XR market, which encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technologies, is relatively new. Companies are still figuring out what works and what doesn’t. However, a device’s success depends a lot on its pricing and the quality of content. Samsung must have equipped the upcoming XR headset with powerful specs, but it still needs to provide users with quality content.
As for the price, Meta’s Quest 3 starts at just $499 while Apple’s Vision Pro costs a staggering $3,500. So the market is wide open for all kinds of devices. It remains to be seen where Samsung positions itself in the market, which is projected to grow to $151 billion by 2026. We may hear more about the company’s first XR headset in the coming months. The majority of malvertising campaigns delivering malicious utilities that we have tracked so far typically deceive victims with pages that are almost the exact replica of the software vendor being impersonated. For example, we have seen fake websites appearing like the real Webex, AnyDesk or KeePass home page.
In a new campaign, we observed a threat actor copying a legitimate Windows news portal (WindowsReport.com) to distribute a malicious installer for the popular processor tool CPU-Z.
This type of website is often visited by geeks and system administrators to read the latest computer reviews, learn some tips and download software utilities. The Windows Report was never compromised and is legitimate, but rather threat actors copied its content to trick users.
This incident is a part of a larger malvertising campaign that targets other utilities like Notepad++, Citrix and VNC Viewer as seen in its infrastructure (domain names) and cloaking templates used to avoid detection. We have informed Google with the relevant details for takedown.
Google ad and filtering
The malicious ad is for CPU-Z, a popular utility for Windows users that want to troubleshoot their processor and other computer hardware details. The advertiser shows as Scott Cooper and is likely a compromised or fake identity.
One common technique used by threat actors to evade detection is to employ cloaking. Anyone clicking on the ad and who’s not the intended victim will see a standard blog with a number of articles.
We had previously identified another malicious ad using almost the same template.
Redirect to Windows news site lookalike
To show what happens when an actual victim clicks on the ad, here is the network traffic related to it as seen in the image below. This time, the corporatecomf[.]online website is no longer used to show a blog with articles but instead does a redirect (302 HTTP code) to another domain at workspace-app[.]online.
This domain uses content from the legitimate Windows portal WindowsReport.com and looks almost identical:
People who searched for CPU-Z and clicked the ad are now at the download page for the software, where they may wrongly assume that it is legitimate. The URL in the address bar does not match the real one, though.

Signed MSIX installer
The payload is a digitally signed MSIX installer which contains a malicious PowerShell script, a loader known as FakeBat:

We are blocking the malvertising domains for all Malwarebytes customers:
ThreatDown, powered by Malwarebytes, already detected the final infostealer payload and we have added coverage for the its command and control servers as well.
It is possible the threat actor chose to create a decoy site looking like Windows Report because many software utilities are often downloaded from such portals instead of their official web page.
The download is also a signed MSI installer, which increases the chances for it to look legitimate from the operating system and antivirus software. These MSI loaders are quite common and allow threat actors to update the final payload by simply swapping a PowerShell script.
Software downloads have been a big target for the past year with criminals using a variety of tricks to deceive users and install malware. In an enterprise environment, it may be wise to verify a file’s checksum to ensure it has not been tampered with by comparing its SHA256 hash sum with what is posted on the vendor’s website.
Setting up custom Google Home routines can be a challenging task, involving users to tinker with automation scripts. Now, to make this process easy for everyday users, Google has introduced the “Help Me Script” feature, which uses generative AI to help people make custom routines.
So, how would the system work?
Google’s smart home ecosystem has been the go-to choice for many Android users, mainly due to extensive third-party accessory support. However, for people with several smart devices, creating custom automation requires them to learn how to use the company’s script editor. This is where the Help Me Script AI comes in, as it allows Google Home users to input natural language descriptions, such as “dim the living room lights and close the blinds when the TV turns on after sunset,” into the AI chatbot. Once entered, the AI not only generates the script but also reviews it and activates the routine.
Additionally, the AI also suggests various routine ideas, from locking doors and turning off lights when a user goes to bed to sending notifications when someone rings the doorbell and the user isn’t home.
Limitations of the system
Considering the Help Me Script feature is still in early development, it has a slew of bugs, including one where the AI will struggle to identify many devices accurately, resulting in errors when attempting to use the generated scripts in the editor. Moreover, the system currently faces difficulties in managing a large group of devices, such as a room. This issue was highlighted by Android Police’s Taylor Kerns, who faced difficulties in making the AI control all the lights in his house.
Still, a big step forward
Despite the issues, this development represents a significant step forward in the smart home space, as by simplifying the creation of complex automation, Google Home can appeal to a broader audience. For users interested in trying out this new AI feature, it’s available through the Google Home web portal.

According to a new piece of information, Huawei could actually unveil the world’s first triple-folding smartphone in Q1 next year. This information comes from “industry sources”, and is relayed by Revegnus, a tipster.

It is said that the company’s development of a triple-folding device is “progressing smoothly”, and that the device “may be ready for launch before March next year”. It is also noted that two such devices will be introduced in 2024.
Now, the tipster did note that Samsung is also preparing a triple-folding device. That phone will launch after Huawei’s, we may even have to wait until 2025 in order to see it.
Ross Young also pitched in via the comments. Ross Young is a well-known display analyst, and he’s usually spot on with his information. He notes that Huawei’s triple-folding device was supposed to launch at the end of this year. It seems like we may have to wait a bit longer, though.
Considering this is a triple-folding device, we presume it’s a tablet of some sort. It will provide us with a huge display when unfolded, and presumably fold down into a smartphone-size device.
It remains to be seen if its thickness will be an issue
It’ll be interesting to see what is Huawei planning here. Even with foldables, thickness was an issue, and it still is for some companies. Triple-folding devices have yet another layer on top of the one on regular folding phones, so they will be thicker, considerably.
Huawei managed to thin down its foldable offerings quite a bit. So, it remains to be seen what the company can do with a triple-folding device. This handset will come without Google Play Services, of course, due to the US ban.
Considering that this will be the world’s first device in the category, Huawei may opt to do a global launch for it. It remains to be seen.
Security in national elections has been a hot topic of late, with both governments and tech companies taking an interest in safeguarding the electoral process. Microsoft is the latest tech entity to roll out tools intended to safeguard elections. The company announced five new steps it is taking to protect elections in a blog post Tuesday that coincided with Election Day in the U.S. Microsoft is targeting two elements of political threats with these new measures: transparency and cybersecurity. While some of these tools are consumer-facing, others are intended to help candidates in their campaigns behind the scenes.
Perhaps the biggest element of Microsoft’s sweeping initiatives is transparency. Images and videos generated by artificial intelligence (AI), commonly referred to as “deepfakes,” are perforating the electoral landscape. As AI becomes more advanced, it will be much harder to tell whether media is real or fake. Microsoft will combat this by rolling out a feature that it calls Content Credentials.
Essentially, Content Credentials allow users to digitally watermark their media with information regarding when and how it was created. This would inform voters whether an image was from yesterday or a decade ago. More importantly, whether it was generated with AI or not. Microsoft says this will launch in Spring 2024 as a preview for political campaigns before making a public debut.
Microsoft’s other election tools coming soon
Microsoft also plans to improve its information provided by its Bing search engine, as it related to elections. For example, it will streamline how information about elections and requirements are displayed to users. The company said that it plans to elevate “reputable sites” in search results, working with external organizations. Examples of these include the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the Spanish news agency EFE, and Reporters Without Borders. These steps are expected to reduce the potential of misinformation or disinformation to come up in search results for election-based queries.
Other Microsoft plans won’t be as evident to the end user. However, they still could have a massive impact to the security of elections. The company plans to install a “Campaign Success Team” designed to help political campaigns navigate AI and cybersecurity concerns. It will operate as part of the Microsoft Philanthropies’ Tech for Social Impact organization, which is a sub-organization within Microsoft. Similarly, it will create a “Election Communications Hub” designed to combat critical security threats to campaign with quick responses.
Finally, for what it’s worth, Microsoft plans to use its “voice as a company to support legislative and legal changes that will add to the protection of campaigns and electoral processes from deepfakes and other harmful uses of new technologies,” per the post. This currently includes backing a U.S. bi-partisan bill against deepfakes, but could expand to others in the future.
Both Google and Apple have immensely powerful compact phones to offer. Google’s is slightly newer, but both launched in the last couple of months. In this article, we’ll compare them, we’ll compare the Google Pixel 8 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro. Both of these phones are compact, but they’re quite different in almost every way. You’ll notice the design differences the moment you lay your eyes on them, but that’s not where things stop.
In this piece, we’ll first list their specifications, and will then proceed to compare them across a number of other categories. We’ll take a look at their design differences, and compare their displays, performance, battery life, cameras, and audio performance. That being said, let’s get this party on the road.
Specs
Google Pixel 8 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro, respectively
Both the Google Pixel 8 and Apple iPhone 15 Pro are made out of metal and glass, but that’s where the similarities end. The Pixel 8 has a frame made out of aluminum, while Apple uses titanium. The iPhone 15 Pro also has flat sides, which are slightly rounded towards the edges. The Pixel 8 does not have flat sides, but its glass backplate does curve into the frame, unlike what you’ll get on the iPhone 15 Pro.
In addition to standard physical buttons, the iPhone 15 Pro also has the so-called Action Button, which is customizable. The Pixel 8 has a flat display, thin bezels, and a centered display camera hole. The iPhone 15 Pro includes a flat display, a pill-shaped cutout on the display, and uniform bezels. The iPhone 15 Pro’s bezels are also a bit thinner. Their back sides differ quite a bit, as the two companies had entirely different approaches to camera design.
The Pixel 8 has a camera visor on the back, with two cameras inside it. The iPhone 15 Pro has a more regular camera setup, with three cameras inside the camera island. The iPhone 15 Pro does have a slightly smaller display, and is a bit smaller in general. It is shorter, and slightly thinner. They’re about the same when it comes to width. The two phones also weigh the same at 187 grams. Both smartphones are also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance.
Google Pixel 8 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Display
A 6.2-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) sits on the Pixel 8. That is a flat OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It supports HDR10+ content, and goes up to 2,000 nits of brightness at its peak. That panel has a 20:9 aspect ratio, and it’s protected by the Gorilla Glass Victus, a protection by Corning.
The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, includes a 6.1-inch 2556 x 1179 LTPO Super Retina XDR OLED display. That is a 120Hz panel with HDR10 and Dolby Vision support. It goes up to 2,000 nits of brightness at its peak. This panel has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and it’s protected by the Ceramic Shield Glass.
Both of these smartphones have outstanding displays. Both pairs are vivid, very bright, and have great viewing angles. The touch response is also good, and so is the display protection, so there’s not really much to complain about. The fact that they’re both flat will also likely appeal to most people. These two panels even offer the same brightness peak, and they’re plenty bright for basically any scenario, even though they’re not the brightest panels out there, technically. They’re also sharp enough. We don’t really have a realistic complaint on either display.
Google Pixel 8 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Performance
The Google Tensor G3 fuels the Google Pixel 8 handset. That is Google’s own SoC, as its name says. The phone also includes 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and up to 256GB of UFS 3.1 flash storage. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the flip side, is fueled by the Apple A17 Pro processor, while it includes 8GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of NVMe storage. Apple has a more powerful SoC here, technically, a considerably more powerful chip. Google is relying on the smarts of the Tensor G3, as the chip has been heavily tailored to the Pixel 8 and its AI features.
In day-to-day usage, both of these smartphones shine, to say the least. They offer very smooth performance, without noticeable lag. You will not notice that the Apple A17 Pro is the more powerful chip unless you get into gaming. Even then, the Tensor G3 can run pretty much every game from the Google Play Store, even the most demanding ones. They will not run as well as on the Apple A17 Pro, though, but still, it’s a nitpick for most people.
Both smartphones are outstanding when it comes to multitasking, browsing, consuming multimedia, image processing, and whatever else you can think of. Each of them have their unique set of features, but when it comes to AI, the Pixel 8 simply shines. Google has an outstanding array of AI features, ranging from the camera ones to various others. Many of them are exclusive to the Pixel 8 series. Both companies also offer truly long software support for these devices, market-leading support.
Google Pixel 8 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Battery
A 4,575mAh battery sits inside the Google Pixel 8. The iPhone 15 Pro, on the other hand, has a 3,274mAh battery. Apple’s iPhones usually have smaller battery packs, so that doesn’t have to be an indicator of inferior battery life. In fact, these two phones are quite comparable in the battery life department. We were able to cross the 6.5 screen-on-time mark on both smartphones basically every time. In fact, most of the time, both smartphones were able to cross the 7-hour mark too.
They were both rather iffy when it comes to battery life, from the get-go, but after a couple of weeks, the battery life did improve. Many would say that they don’t offer bad battery life at all, especially considering their size. They cannot compete with the ASUS ZenFone 10, for example, as that phone’s battery life is outstanding, despite its size. However, for the vast majority of people, the battery life these two phones offer will do the trick.
What about charging? Well, the Google Pixel 8 supports 27W wired, 18W wireless, and reverse wireless charging too. The iPhone 15 Pro supports 20W wired, 15W MagSafe wireless, 7.5W Qi wireless, and 4.5W reverse wired charging. Do note that neither phone includes a charger in the box, though. You’ll need to get one separately. The good news is, however, that the iPhone 15 Pro does feature a Type-C port, finally.
Google Pixel 8 vs Apple iPhone 15 Pro: Cameras
The Google Pixel 8 has two cameras on the back, while the iPhone 15 Pro has three. A 50-megapixel main camera sits on the back of the Pixel 8, along with a 12-megapixel ultrawide camera (126-degree FoV). The iPhone 15 Pro has a 48-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (120-degree FoV), and a 12-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom). The iPhone 15 Pro also has a 3D LiDAR scanner on the back.
Having said that, how do they compare in terms of camera quality? Well, they both shoot great photos, but different ones. The Pixel 8 leans towards cooler tones, while its images usually look contrasty. It shines in HDR conditions, and captures plenty of detail. These images are usually ready to post out of the gate. The iPhone 15 Pro tries to keep things closer to real life, though the images do end up looking a bit processed, of course, depending on the shooting style you end up choosing. They’re rich with details too.
The ultrawide cameras on both phones do a good job of keeping the same color profile as the main camera. They shoot really compelling images, to say the least. The iPhone 15 Pro does win in the telephoto section, as the Pixel 8 doesn’t have a telephoto camera, even though its Super Res Zoom does do a great job without it. The iPhone 15 Pro is the king of video, and even though the Pixel 8 can shoot very good video content, it’s still not on the same level as the iPhone 15 Pro.
Audio
Both smartphones have stereo speakers. The ones on the Pixel 8 are a bit louder, but not by much. Both sets of speakers provide really good, detailed sound. They’re not the best out there, though, but still… not many people will have complaints here.
What you will not find on either of these two smartphones is an audio jack. That is not surprising, though, not at all. You can always utilize their Type-C ports, or use Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless audio connections.
In a bid to stop ad-blocking on modified ad-free YouTube apps, Google is introducing the Android WebView Media Integrity API. This is simply an API that helps websites check the authenticity of devices before opening YouTube videos on them. If the API detects that the device is using a modified YouTube app, it’ll block access to certain controls.
Google isn’t designing this new feature just to combat ad blockers on YouTube. This is a security feature that will help protect user’s personal information from compromise by dangerous devices on the web. It can also help Google to crack down on ad blockers that are causing harm to YouTube’s business.
There are some concerns as to how this feature will work and how effective it will be. To keep these concerns in check, Google is strengthening the functionality of Android’s WebView Media Integrity API. But how exactly will this API help keep a check on the usage of ad-free YouTube apps?
To curb ad-free YouTube apps, Google might turn to the Android WebView Media Integrity API
A few weeks ago, YouTube kicked off its all-out fight against the use of ad blockers on its platform. This move by the tech giant saw the blocking of most ad-blockers from usage on the platform. Those making use of ad-blockers while streaming were given warnings to abstain from using these software products.
Despite this move by Google, some users are still bent on enjoying an ad-free viewing experience without subscribing to YouTube Premium. To achieve this goal, such users move over to ad-free YouTube alternative apps. These apps offer users videos from YouTube while blocking ads and users are beginning to flock to these apps.
YouTube’s fight against ad-blockers will also stretch to these apps as well. To prevent YouTube video streaming on these apps, Google might use the Android WebView Media Integrity API. Unlike the WebView for Android devices, this API checks device integrity before letting it access websites.
This API tool will test the integrity of these ad-free YouTube apps and find them wanting in most areas. After the test, the API will prevent users from accessing YouTube because they use ad-blockers. YouTube doesn’t permit the usage of ad-blockers on its platform, so the API will be quick to flag these apps down.
Google will soon start using this API to flag down apps that offer ad-blocking services for YouTube streaming. Users of these apps will be left without any other option than to head over to the YouTube app and stream with ads. They can also opt to pay the monthly Premium subscription fee and get rid of the ads.
It’s no surprise considering that one person has dominated the music industry in 2023, but Taylor Swift has been named the Apple Music Artist of the Year. During the summer, her monthly streams continued to show double-digit growth. Her Eras Tour was the most streamed set list. This year, songs like “Bad Blood,” “Blank Space,” “Style,” “Shake It Off,” “Wildest Dreams,” and “All Of The Girls You Loved Before” hit the Apple Music charts.

Xiaomi just introduced strict restrictions to unlocking the bootloader on its HyperOS-running phones, citing security and data protection. While MIUI devices offer some amount of flexibility in this context, HyperOS users are going to face more extensive limitations if they want to unlock the bootloader.

Xiaomi’s expectation behind this move is likely to gain a good reputation regarding the software experience they provide. This seems especially likely when you consider the minimal actual changes except a new name for the skin.
Xiaomi’s new approach to bootloader unlocking raises concerns among enthusiasts
Xiaomi was imposing significant restrictions on bootloader unlocking for its HyperOS-running phones. The company has now officially confirmed (via Android Authority) that bootloader unlocking will be disabled by default on HyperOS smartphones, citing enhanced device security, data protection, and overall user experience as the primary reasons for this change.
“To protect the device’s security, avoid data leakage, and provide users with a more secure and stable user experience, bootloader unlocking will be disabled by default on Xiaomi HyperOS,” replies Xiaomi addressing Android Authority‘s questions.
Users seeking to unlock their HyperOS-running Xiaomi device will need to ask Xiaomi for permission via the company’s community forum. And there are some additional restrictions for the unlocking process too, in China.

As Kacoer Skarzypek tweeted, Xiaomi HyperOS users will need to reach “level five” on the company’s forums before they can proceed with bootloader unlocking. Moreover, Xiaomi has added time-sensitive restrictions, and users are limited to unlocking a maximum of three devices per year. It’s essential to note that these heightened restrictions currently apply only to the Chinese version of HyperOS.
The company also addressed MIUI users eligible to get HyperOS updates. The users would no longer receive Xiaomi HyperOS updates if they leave their devices in an unlocked state. Xiaomi clarified that HyperOS updates could be received if the user chooses to lock their device again. These policies apply to all Xiaomi devices outside of China.

The new service the tech giant is bringing to its users is a healthcare service that recruits the services of One Medical.
If you aren’t already aware, One Medical is a healthcare service provider that operates under Amazon’s umbrella. One Medical offers both in-person and remote healthcare services to customers around the country. With this new $9 per month service that Amazon is introducing, subscribers will be able to access services from this healthcare provider.
This service is only open to existing Amazon Prime subscribers and not just anybody. The services will be accessible via the One Medical app under the “Treat Me Now” section.
