Prolific Puma Service, Domain Generator and URL Shortener

0
[ad_1]

Hackers can exploit Massive Domain Generator and URL Shortener services by creating large numbers of deceptive or malicious domains and using URL shorteners to hide the true destination of links.

This can be used for the following illicit purposes:-

  • Phishing attacks
  • Spreading malware
  • Directing unsuspecting users to malicious websites
  • Makes it harder to trace the source of the attacks

Recently, cybersecurity analysts at Infoblox uncovered a massive domain generator and URL shortener service dubbed “Prolific Puma Service.”

Domain Generator and URL Shortener

In 2023, the $8 trillion cybercrime economy ranks third globally. Puma aids this network, crafting deceptive domain names (RDGA) for:-

  • Link shortening
  • Aiding phishing
  • Scams
  • Malware spread

Disrupting Prolific Puma Service means hitting the criminal economy hard, as they create numerous deceptive domains and shorten links for malicious actors, hiding their actions.

Prolific Puma’s role in the cybercrime supply chain (Source – Infoblox)

This finding highlights the power of using DNS data to spot threats. Prolific Puma was tracked via DNS, showing challenges for domain authorities in controlling abuse.

Distance from the crime can divert the takedowns, and researchers first spotted Puma domains via RDGA detection six months ago.

Prolific Puma offers covert link shortening for threat actors, and directly accessing an active SLD presents this message:-

  • {“type”: “service”,”name”:”@link-shortener/handler-service”}

Link shorteners simplify web link sharing and tackle social media size limits. When a user clicks, a DNS request resolves the shortening service’s IP, like tinyurl[.]com.

The web request contains a hash to redirect, and additional DNS queries find the content’s IP. Legitimate users shorten links, but malicious actors may use complex redirection layers.

A notional path (Source – Infoblox)

Malicious use of link shorteners, like TinyURL, BitLy, and Google, is common for phishing. Companies should avoid popular shorteners in emails. Prolific Puma’s services remained low-key.

Investigating link shorteners is tricky, as the final landing page can’t be determined without a full URL. Detecting suspicious domains with no public presence raises questions about their usage.

Prolific Puma registered thousands of usTLD domains since May 2023, violating usTLD rules. The usTLD is known for abuse, and privacy issues persist, mainly with NameSilo as the registrar.

Private registration in the usTLD is unauthorized but exists, and to combat DNS threats, collaboration is needed.

Threat actors show unique traits in their tactics, and Prolific Puma, a DNS threat actor, uses private registration but public usTLD domains with an email reference to the obscure song ‘October 33’ by the lesser-known band, the Black Pumas.

They also adopt the name ‘Leila Puma,’ which alludes to the same band and adds a touch of mystery with a personal Ukrainian email.

YouTube doubles down on preventing the use of ad-blockers

0
[ad_1]

YouTube Premium has achieved a milestone, securing the tenth spot on Parks Associates’ top 10 U.S. subscription streaming video services list. This achievement is likely due to the fact that YouTube is cracking down on ad blockers.

YouTube Premium has been doubling down on its efforts to prevent viewers from using ad-blockers. Apparently, because it violates YouTube’s terms of service. The company recently launched a “global effort” to eliminate these extensions. As an alternative option, YouTube is encouraging users to explore the ad-free experience offered by YouTube Premium. Otherwise, users get the option to support the content or the creators by allowing ads on the platform.

According to a Google spokesperson, the use of ad blockers goes against YouTube’s Terms of Service. They emphasized the importance of ads in supporting a diverse ecosystem of creators globally while enabling billions to access their favorite content on YouTube.

Cracking down on ad-blockers is not only about upholding terms of service but also about revenue. Ad blockers have been cutting into YouTube’s ad-generated revenue, but the effort to eliminate them is showing results. In the third quarter, Google reported ad revenue from YouTube at $7.95 billion, a significant increase from $7.07 billion the previous year.

Google tries to justify YouTube Premium to users with ad-blockers

Additionally, the crackdown on ad-blockers is driving viewers towards YouTube’s paid tier, YouTube Premium. The platform has been persistent in offering users the option to switch to the Premium tier.

YouTube Premium, priced at $13.99 a month, provides users with an ad-free experience. It also offers family and student plans. Subscribers can download videos for offline viewing and access YouTube Music Premium, enhancing the overall user experience.

Some users expressed their dissatisfaction when YouTube began blocking content for viewers using ad-blocker extensions. But the results of stopping ad-blockers have been beneficial for the company.

The proactive step against ad-blockers highlights YouTube’s commitment to providing an enhanced streaming experience for users. Simultaneously, it demonstrates their dedication to maintaining a sustainable ecosystem for content creators.

Apple focuses even more on health for the 2024 Apple Watch

0
[ad_1]

The latest Apple Watch boasts a plethora of health-tracking capabilities, from measuring body temperature to monitoring blood oxygen levels, tracking sleep, and even performing electrocardiograms.

Moreover, Apple’s ecosystem extends health tracking to the iPhone, allowing users to access their medical records and share vital health information.

Apple’s journey into the health domain has not only redefined personal wellness but also pushed the boundaries of mainstream health tracking with the Apple Watch. The tech giant has harnessed technology to save lives, showcasing instances where its products detected life-threatening heart conditions or automatically summoned emergency services in the event of accidents or falls. However, there might also be a catch in getting access to all your health data in real-time, which I will discuss a bit later.

The roadmap for 2024: Health tracking on the Apple Watch

Looking ahead to 2024, Apple has an ambitious roadmap that reinforces its dedication to health and well-being. Among the notable additions to the 2024 Apple Watch is the introduction of blood pressure sensors. It’s designed to detect trends in hypertension. Rather than offering precise blood pressure measurements, this technology will prompt users to consult a healthcare professional when necessary, reports Bloomberg. While more advanced versions of the system are in development, they remain a bit further down the road.

Another groundbreaking health-tracking feature slated for the 2024 Apple Watch is sleep apnea detection. This innovation will analyze sleep and breathing patterns to estimate whether the user may have sleep apnea. It will recommend you to a visit to a physician, if it considers necessary.

Additionally, Apple is working on non-invasive blood glucose monitoring. Here a silicon photonics chip shines light beneath the skin to gauge glucose concentration. At this stage, it primarily tracks blood sugar trends and alerts users to pre-diabetes. However, it doesn’t provide precise blood sugar readings. This technology is expected to take some more years before it’s integrated into a product.

While this ‘health-tracking’ might be helpful, even life-saving in some cases, caring about it too much acts negatively, sometimes. For instance, running will naturally add some numbers to your heart rate. But seeing the number going up sometimes adds up more even if it is completely normal.

If you want a Pixel Watch 2 quickly Best Buy has you covered

0
[ad_1]

Back when the Pixel Watch 2 launched it was very quickly catapulted into the shadow realm for interested Android users in terms of fast shipping from the Google Store, but Best Buy was the saving grace for at least a little bit. Now that it’s been about three weeks, you might think that stock issues have stabilized a little bit. And they kind of have.

That isn’t the case with the Google Store though for the most part. As shipping is still listed as anywhere from a week to three weeks depending on the model you go for. But once again Best Buy is coming in as the hero. Because if you go to Best Buy to purchase the Pixel Watch 2, shipping is more or less instantaneous. Interestingly, in some cases Amazon might deliver even faster. Checking out Amazon for the Pixel Watch 2 for our area revealed that at least one or two variants of the watch could be delivered overnight. With another being available by 10pm PST today.

Other color combinations would be delivered anywhere between November 3 and November 9. So, clearly other retailers are having plenty of luck with stock and it’s only Google that seems to be backlogged a bit. Perhaps more people ordered directly from Google. With Amazon, the only downside for some might be that it doesn’t have the silver/bay color combination in the Wi-Fi model. But it does have the LTE version.

Best Buy is shipping all colors of the Pixel Watch 2 within days

If you’re looking to get one fast, Amazon is your best bet since some of the will be delivered by morning if you were to order quick enough. And depending on how close you live to a distribution center. But Best Buy seems to be delivering pretty quickly as spotted by to 9To5Google.

This goes for all colors and both models too. So no matter which one you prefer Best Buy seems to have it. And it can ship out fast. Again this might vary based on your location. But for the most part it doesn’t appear to be an issue. Who knows. You might even live close to a Best Buy that has them in-store.

Microsoft Insight from AI poll on woman’s death raises eyebrows

0
[ad_1]

The Guardian is now on Microsoft’s neck as a result of an error from their Insight from AI poll feature. This AI-generated poll attached itself to the sad news on The Guardian’s website of a woman’s death. Users were given various options to pick from concerning the woman’s death, which is beyond inappropriate.

After going through the poll, users were not impressed by this and blamed its existence on the writer. Despite readers pointing fingers at the article’s writers, the poll wasn’t entirely their fault but on the side of Microsoft. Some readers took to the comment section of the poll to express their disgust with the poll and how insensitive the polls were.

Now The Guardian is accusing Microsoft of damaging its reputation with the Insight from AI feature. The news provider went ahead to remove the poll from their page, but it had already done some damage to the brand’s reputation. Following this removal, Guardian Media Group’s chief executive wrote to Microsoft about this concerning poll.

A recent Guardian post leads to the deactivation of Microsoft’s Insight from AI feature

Following The Guardian’s post about the death of a woman a few days ago was an AI-generated poll. This poll popped up just beside the article on the Microsoft web browser and it threw a rather concerning question at users. The poll asked, “What do you think is the reason behind the woman’s death?”

It also gave users a total of three options to pick between murder, accident, and suicide. Users were quick to judge that the writer of the article set this poll up. However, it was a product of Microsoft’s Insight from AI feature.

From the AI poll, it clearly got an idea of the article but failed to show sympathy for the situation. In a rather disheartening way, the Insight from AI feature sorts out users’ ideas on the cause of the woman’s death. The Guardian didn’t take the allegations from its readers on them playing a role in the poll lightly.

Immediately, the news provider was able to remove the poll, but this was after the damage. Not stopping there, they also sent a letter to Microsoft about the AI-generated poll expressing their dissatisfaction with it. Microsoft’s moderation of AI-generated content is now under question with this shocking turn of events.

Following complaints from the Guardian, Microsoft has removed AI-generated polls for all news on their search platform. According to the company, the poll wasn’t meant to appear alongside that article from The Guardian. This is just one of the reasons why most people don’t trust the use of AI in various aspects of life.

How to take a screenshot on the Google Pixel 8

0
[ad_1]

If you’ve purchased or plan to purchase a Google Pixel 8, then you might end up wondering how to take a screenshot on this device. While this is typically a pretty easy thing to do it’s understandable that not everyone will be sure about how to complete such a function. Whether you’re coming from an iPhone or simply an older Android device, sometimes the process for taking a screenshot is different. It can change from phone to phone depending on the manufacturer.

And in many cases, there are multiple methods for taking a screenshot on a single device. So that’s what this guide aims to help you with. Letting you know how to take a screenshot on your device in the simplest way possible and any additional methods. That way you can choose how to take a screenshot based on what’s most convenient for you at any given time.

How to take a screenshot on the Google Pixel 8

Taking a screenshot on the Pixel 8 is not a difficult task. That being said, there are multiple ways to do it. So we’re going to roll through them step by step. That way you can utilize them all if you so choose. Or you can use just one, or even none of them if you don’t really take screenshots. Either way, let’s dive into it.

Press and hold the power and volume buttons simultaneously

Pixel 8 Screenshot

The tried and true method that has persisted through many Android versions and most phones from different manufacturers, is the simultaneous press of the power button and volume down button.

It’s simple, quick, and with the latest Android versions you even get a little preview of the screenshot that shrinks down to the bottom left corner of the display. It’ll sit there for a minute with a few extra actions you can take whether that be sharing it or editing the screenshot in some way. This will be the same method for most phones. But some manufacturers do change it and implement their own way of doing things. So keep that in mind as your phone manufacturer may not support this way of taking screenshots. But for the Pixel 8, this is a native method and works great.

Use Google Assistant

Just like many of the more basic functions of your device, the Pixel 8 supports Google Assistant taking the screenshot for you. And if you want to do things hands-free then this is the way. Simply say “Ok Google” which is the hot word for activating it on your device. Once you see Google Assistant waiting for you to give it a task, just tell it to “take a screenshot” and it’ll do just that. It maya take a couple seconds for it to process the request. But rest assured it’ll work.

From the Accessibility menu

You’ll need to turn this on first. But once you do there’s an easy button you can press to take a screenshot anytime you want to. First start by going into settings. Then navigate to accessibility.

Once inside the Accessibility settings tap on the Accessibility Menu option. You’ll be asked to allow the menu to have full control of your device. Which includes viewing and controlling the screen, and viewing and controlling actions. Tap allow to continue. Now select what you want to show up in this Accessibility Menu shortcut. You can choose screenshot but there’s also options for Google Assistant, screen brightness, locking the screen and more. After you’ve selected the options you want in there, you can back out to the home screen. There will now be a floating accessibility menu shortcut along the edge of the screen.

To take screenshots this way, tap that shortcut which will open the floating menu, and tap on the screenshot icon to take a screenshot.

That’s about it for native methods that are baked into the phone. But you might be able to find additional ways of taking a screenshot through apps, or a different launcher like Nova Launcher which has tons of customization options.

How to take a scrolling screenshot

This method is basically the same as any phone running on stock Android 13 and stock Android 14. First use whatever method you want to take a screenshot. Whether that’s with the power and volume down buttons or using Google Assistant or the Accessibility menu.

Once the screenshot is taken you’ll have a few seconds where the preview of it will be visible in the bottom left of the screen. If there is more to see by scrolling, such as on webpages, there will be a “capture more” button you can tap. Tap this button and then a new window will open that will let you drag the borders of the screenshot down to cover more of the page you screenshotted. This will only go so far but it’s great for getting more info or imagery into one screenshot as opposed to several.

This won’t work on every single screen. For example, it won’t pop up on the home screen if that’s what you’re taking a screenshot of. Because the home screen doesn’t have anything else to capture by scrolling downward. This will however work on as mentioned above, webpages, as well as the Google Feed to the left of the home screen, inside apps and really anything that requires you to scroll for accessing more content. You might use this way less than regular screenshots but it still comes in handy from time to time.

Mandiant Tracks Four Uncategorized Groups Exploiting Citrix Vulnerability

0
[ad_1]

According to Mandiant, the Citrix vulnerability which specifically impacts NetScaler ADC and Gateway appliances, has been detected in the wild since late August 2023.

Citrix, a provider of NetScaler ADC and Gateway appliances, released a security bulletin on October 10, 2023, detailing a vulnerability (CVE-2023-4966) exposing sensitive information. Mandiant, a Google-owned prominent cybersecurity firm, has identified instances of both zero-day exploitation and subsequent exploitation of this vulnerability following Citrix’s disclosure.

The vulnerability specifically affects NetScaler ADC and Gateway appliances and has been observed in the wild since late August 2023, continuing after the release of the security advisoty by the company.

Mandiant’s investigations revealed successful exploitation incidents, allowing threat actors to take control of legitimate user sessions on these Citrix appliances, bypassing authentication measures, including passwords and multi-factor authentication.

Mandiant’s findings shed light on factors that help in identifying exploitation activities and highlights various post-exploitation techniques witnessed during their incident response investigations.

Vulnerable Endpoints

When Citrix released firmware updates addressing CVE-2023-4966, Mandiant employed similar methods as Assetnote, an rxternal attack surface management firm, to identify vulnerable functions and create a proof of concept (PoC). Prior to Citrix’s publication, Mandiant was already investigating session takeovers, which they believed were the result of zero-day exploitation.

With differential firmware analysis, they pinpointed the vulnerable endpoint by crafting an HTTP GET request with an extended Host header, causing a vulnerable appliance to expose system memory contents, potentially revealing a valid NetScaler AAA session cookie.

Investigation Challenges

A significant challenge in investigating these vulnerable appliances lies in the absence of request logging for the vulnerable endpoint on the appliance’s web server. Mandiant recommends relying on web application firewalls (WAF) or similar network appliances recording HTTP/S requests directed towards these NetScaler devices to identify attempted exploitations.

Techniques for Identifying Exploitation

Mandiant outlined several techniques to identify potential exploitation and subsequent session hijacking. These include scrutinizing WAF logs, identifying suspicious login patterns in NetScaler logs, checking Windows Registry keys, and analyzing memory core dump files.

Post-Exploitation Activities

Following successful exploitation, Mandiant observed several post-exploitation tactics, such as reconnaissance, credential harvesting, and lateral movement through RDP. Threat actors used a variety of tools and techniques to gain access, including Mimikatz for dumping process memory and deploying remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools like Atera, AnyDesk, and SplashTop.

Victimology and Attribution

Mandiant’s investigation spans across multiple sectors, including legal, professional services, technology, and government organizations in the Americas, EMEA, and APJ regions. They are tracking four distinct uncategorized (UNC) groups involved in exploiting this vulnerability.

“Mandiant is currently tracking four distinct uncategorized (UNC) groups involved in exploiting this vulnerability. We have observed some lower degrees of confidence overlaps in post-exploitation stages among these UNC groups, like using the same recon commands and utilities available on Windows. The common tools observed across multiple intrusions were: csvde.exe certutil.exe local.exe nbtscan.exe.”

Mandiant

Remediation Efforts

Mandiant published a blog post offering remediation recommendations and guidance to mitigate this vulnerability.

In conclusion, this revelation provides insights into the exploitation and post-exploitation activities resulting from the Citrix vulnerability CVE-2023-4966. Mandiant’s ongoing investigation aims to understand the intricacies of the exploit and provide comprehensive guidance for remediation.

Editor’s note:

The article includes limited technical details about the vulnerability, exploitation techniques, and detection methods. Please note that this is a summarization of the extensive information provided in the original blog post by Mandiant.

Elon Musk warns of potential AI-induced human extinction

0
[ad_1]

Renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk warns AI-induced human extinction. He particularly emphasizes the risks of developing frontier AI by ‘extreme environmentalists.’ Speaking on comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast, Musk expressed his fears that some could misuse AI technology to protect the planet by ending human life.

The tech magnate’s remarks come ahead of the UK’s AI safety summit, where experts and leaders in the field are convening to discuss the potential risks associated with AI. Despite Musk’s controversial assertions, many in the AI community consider that Musk has exaggerated the implications.

While Elon Musk warns about the potential of AI-induced human extinction, Nick Clegg, President of Global Affairs at Meta and former UK Deputy Prime Minister, is also attending the summit. He urged a focus on more immediate challenges rather than speculative future scenarios. “The technology is not ready to, for instance, prescribe drugs to patients, where an error could cost a human life.”

Musk’s concerns about AI-induced human extinction prompted a discussion on AI risks at a global summit

Musk’s comments are rooted in concerns that the environmental movement has gone to extremes. He suggests that AI programming by these ‘extinctionists’ could result in AI being dedicated to the extinction of humanity.

As part of the summit’s discussions, experts are examining the risks associated with AI’s growth and development. While not all experts share Musk’s interpretation of the AI threat, there is a consensus regarding the potential dangers AI poses.

The co-founder of Google Deepmind, Demis Hassabis, emphasized the need to approach AI with caution and responsibility. He cited the risk of AI generating misinformation, the creation of deepfakes, and the potential misuse of the technology by malicious actors.

The AI safety summit brings together global leaders, tech innovators, academics, and AI researchers. The event is held at the historic Bletchley Park campus in the UK. Topics of discussion include maximizing AI’s benefits, from discovering new medicines to addressing climate change challenges, while mitigating risks.

Balancing Innovation and Security: Addressing the Threats of Frontier AI

The summit will particularly focus on the threats posed by advanced AI, often referred to as “frontier AI,” with a keen eye on issues like bio-terrorism and cyberattacks.

Aidan Gomez, founder of Cohere, underscored the need to address more immediate AI-related threats. He emphasized the importance of regulation to ensure the responsible use of AI technology.

As the world grapples with the implications of AI advancement, discussions at the summit aim to strike a balance. They seek to harness the benefits of AI innovation while also safeguarding against its potential risks.

Google Assistant will now default to use Keep for your notes and shopping lists

0
[ad_1]

Google Assistant will now use Google Keep as its default (and only option) for new notes and shopping lists. This replaces the legacy note and list system the Assistant used in the past and the company already has a migration plan in place.
As spotted by 9to5Google after Google updated an FAQ support article covering the subject, the migration process should be fairly straightforward, with no action necessary on the users’ part. This process will begin in November 2023, after which point Google Shopping List will redirect to Google Keep.

This means that you will no longer be able to access your notes and lists from assistant.google.com/lists/mainview or shoppinglist.google.com. Instead, you will need to use Google Keep to access new and old lists created with the Assistant.

However, there are a few edge cases where your notes and lists might not be moved, such as family notes created on Smart Displays that have a large amount of items or characters. In these rare cases where the notes or lists are not moved automatically, Google will have this data available for users to download through Google Takeout until May 1, 2024. Note that after this date, the data will be automatically deleted from Google’s servers.

Old Shopping List and new Keep setup via Assistant Settings

The migrated data will be available within the Google Keep app or site and will be noted by a chip that identifies them as notes or lists that were previously in the legacy system. You will also be able to use Google Assistant to manage your Google Keep data, but you will need to explicitly give the Assistant permission to do so. These permissions can be set from within the Google Assistant settings on your iOS or Android device where you will be able to designate Keep as your notes and lists provider. This change is part of Google’s ongoing effort to clean up old Assistant functionality and integrate it with Google Keep. Earlier this year, Google moved reminders to Google Tasks. Google also discontinued third-party Notes & Lists integration.

Apple Arcade is getting a new “Dreamy” Sonic game

0
[ad_1]

With the final DLC for Sonic Frontiers, Sonic Super Stars, and the additions to Sonic Origins+, 2023 is a great year to be a Sonic fan. If you’re an Apple Arcade user, then you’ll have another reason, as Sega just announced Sonic Dream Team. This will be exclusive to Arcade users, so Play Store users are, unfortunately, going to miss out.

Sonic Dream Team is hitting the Apple Arcade

If you’re excited about this game, then you’re going to be a little disappointed, as you’ll be waiting a month for it. The game will officially hit the arcade on December 5th.

So, what’s the story? Well, Dr. Robotnik is at it again! This time, he’s discovered the Reverie. This is an ancient device that has the power to manifest dreams into reality. Whatever Robotnik dreams up can’t be good, and that’s where you come in.

You’ll take on the role of one of six classic Sonic characters- Sonic (of course), Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge, and Cream- and explore 12 all-new dream-inspired levels. These locations are all fresh and different from the places we’ve seen in Sonic games before.

This is a 3D platformer that lets you freely explore these levels on your way to stopping Eggman. Along the way, you’ll encounter four different unique bosses. While this is a mobile title, you can bet that it will give you a console-like experience from start to finish.

This game will launch exclusively on the Apple Arcade, which has just seen its price jump from $4.99/month to $6.99/month. Sega hasn’t discussed any plans to release this game outside of that platform, so if you’re looking forward to it, then you’ll need to use your iOS device.

While you’re at it, you’ll have access to other Sega games on the platform like Sonic Racing, Sonic Dash+, Samba de Amigo: Party-To-Go, and Football Manager 2023 Touch.
