The image in question is specifically for the Chinese market, and it draws attention to the device’s processor, telling fans to “stay tuned.”

From the said promotional image, there is no indication of the ROG Phone 8 launch date. The only detail on the specifications of this device given away by this promotional image is its processor.

Just like the ROG Phone 7 series, the ROG Phone 8 might launch with two devices. A base model that is more powerful than most devices, and an extremely powerful Ultimate model. The design on both devices will be very gamer-oriented, as the ROG devices are built for that specific audience.

ASUS might be planning to launch this device soon, but the date isn’t available at this time. However, fans might see the announcement and launch happen earlier than they did for the ROG Phone 7 series.

Android RISC-V emulators are coming to the public in 2024

The adoption of Android’s RISC-V free and open instruction set architecture (ISA) is gaining momentum. This architecture has been in the pipeline for quite a while as Google has been finding ways to implement it for Android devices. Google has been pulling the strings to bring RISC-V support to Android devices for quite a while now, and it’s already seeing some success.

Already, the Mountain View tech giant plans to bring support for these emulators by next year. There is currently a focus on ensuring that CPUs running this emulator will reach their full performance potential. Developers already have the tools necessary to build and run apps that support RISC-V on their machines.

These apps will feature the basic Android Open Source Project (AOSP) experience. At the moment, this technology is not yet ready for widespread usage on Android devices but is perfect for developer experimentation and collaboration. Google encourages developers to try this out as they work to ensure full compatibility with Android devices.

The Android RISC-V emulator is coming in 2024 and wearable devices might get it first

A few weeks ago, Qualcomm announced its partnership with Google to launch a RISC-V Wear OS chip. This is just one of the major steps towards the adoption of RISC-V on Android devices. By next year, Google will roll out emulators that’ll help test apps on all Android device form factors.

First on the list to get these emulators will be Wear OS devices that’ll use the coming Qualcomm chip. Possibly, coming chips for Android devices of other form factors will be able to get support for RISC-V as well. Once this support is available, the chips will be able to access all features necessary to achieve high performance.

RISC-V came into existence about 10 years ago, but its usage hasn’t been widespread. Now Google is bringing it to Android devices to improve performance. Last year at the RISC-V Summit, Google announced that it’ll be “accepting patches for RISC-V.”

From the summit up until this time, Google has continually matured support for RISC-V for Android. Developers are now free to test how this architecture will perform with their apps. Google is also preparing to make “NDK ABI finalized and canary builds available on Android’s public CI soon and RISC-V on x86-64 & ARM64 available for easier testing of riscv64 Android applications on a host machine.”

By next year, a more stable RISC-V emulator will be available for widespread usage. Until then, developers can continue using the tools available to test out this coming emulator. More information on the arrival of RISC-V on Android devices will become available in the coming months.

AI (artificial intelligence), can it help? Can it hurt? Is it the technological revolution to ferry humanity to a new age… or will dystopian Sci-fi films become our reality? These are questions that we ask all of the time. However, Bill Gates has huge plans and high hopes for AI technology.

YouTuber Arin Maini (MrWhosYourBoss) sat down with Bill Gates and talked about how he believes that AI could change the world. During the interview, we got a pretty detailed picture of his vision of AI going forward.

Right now, we don’t know the true potential of AI technology. While artificial intelligence has been around for quite some time, generative AI is still brand-new to us. Gen AI is the fire, and we’re the cavemen holding the burning stick about to learn its constructive and destructive potential. So, we’re turning to those deep in the tech industry to see what they think about the technology.

Bill Gates has many thoughts on where AI technology can take us in the future. He referred to several key areas where AI could have the biggest impact, and he brings some solid points.

How Bill Gates believes AI could impact the world

So, we know about the potential negative side-effects of AI; job losses, tons of misinformation, and (the worst effect of all) AI-generated images on our Instagram feed. However, there are two sides to every coin, and AI has a ton of potential to help humanity. In an ironic turn of events, it can be there to provide more manpower in places that are lacking; one of those places is Africa.

“The Gates Foundation is all about inequity, including in health and some work in education”, Bill Gates said during the interview, “Who are the innovators who are thinking about tutoring African students or providing Africans healthcare where the shortage of doctors is worse here than anywhere in the world?”

He explained that AI technologies could be extremely helpful in four key areas under three broad umbrella categories; education, farming, and healthcare.

Education

Starting off with education, many of the people reading this have had access to a fair amount of resources in grade school. However, in Africa, that’s not really the case. Many students don’t have proper textbooks or access to enough teachers. In the video, Maini explained that teachers could be so thinly distributed that classes could have up to 100 students per teacher.

This means that the students don’t have the kind of individual attention that they need. Well, it’s possible for AI technology to be students’ personal tutors. Rather than, or along with, being in a class where they have to share the teacher with dozens of other kids, each kid could have access to an AI-generated tutor.

Imagine having an AI that could change and adapt to your learning style. Most learning programs and services have a pre-made curriculum that’s designed to match students’ levels. Well, AI could generate a curriculum based specifically on the child’s needs.

Another issue is that many textbooks just aren’t translated into their specific languages. This means that new and informative textbooks that would otherwise teach them just aren’t accessible. AI could either translate textbooks or create textbooks in their language.

Attention

This all comes down to attention. Many other languages and countries just aren’t getting as much attention as others. Most publishers aren’t translating their textbooks or distributing them to Africa. The impact of this is two-fold. Without proper resources, the students have less of a chance of getting higher education.

This also means that there are fewer students who can go on to become teachers, thus feeding into the lack of teachers. It’s a domino effect that can be dampened over the next several years through AI.

Farming

When it comes to farming, it can be hard to make a living if you don’t have the proper forecasts or insights. One thing that AI does best is gather information from different available sources. We’re talking about news outlets, satellite imagery, and other sources to give concise information about when farmers should plant. They’ll be able to ask AI about when to expect the next disease outbreak to happen (as explained by Maini), and other questions.

This gives farmers a ton of data and power to help them maximize their farming. Right now, many farmers in Africa don’t have proper access to forecasting technology. So, there’s no preparing for harsh weather, there’s only waiting until harsh weather happens and doing damage control.

Healthcare

The thought of AI and healthcare is scary, especially since Gen-AI technology is still rife with inaccurate information and hallucinations. You don’t want to trust your health or the health of someone you love to AI, but it could help in many ways.

Here’s the reality of the situation; they say that time heals all wounds, well time makes the wounds worse sometimes. Millions of people flock to hospitals in more privileged countries and are subjected to wait several hours for attention. In Africa, the wait is much longer, with people waiting several weeks for medical attention. As you can imagine, that’s not ideal in any scenario.

Medical help is something that should NOT be postponed for any amount of time. However, hospitals are severely understaffed in several parts of Africa. It’s so bad that millions of people in Africa actually die each year while just waiting for medical attention.

How it can help

Well, Bill Gates believes that having access to AI chatbots could be an amazing resource for people waiting for medical assistance. Instead of waiting in suspense for information on their condition, people can consult with an AI that’s always there for them. It’s shocking how many conditions can be remedied with tools readily available. It can be as simple as taking in more water or taking a certain OTC medication.

That’s how it can help patients, but it could also help the healthcare workers assisting the patients. AI technology can handle certain tasks for workers. It can approve radiology scans, write notes, and automate other tasks that they would otherwise have to do by hand. The hospitals are severely short on manpower, and expediting those tasks can help them make it to more patients.

The thing here is time. Medicine is time-sensitive, and the amount of time that it takes for medical workers to get to patients is crucial. AI technology could help expedite medical procedures and tasks so that more patients can have medical attention.

But, what about the potential downsides?

Benefits on paper are different from benefits in real life, and that’s especially true when it comes to AI technology. This tech is not without its major flaws, and these flaws could mean the difference between life and death.

Hallucinations

Right now, all AI companies are trying to tackle the issue of AI hallucinations. This is when an AI seemingly creates facts out of thin air rather than using the information stored in its “brain”. Imagine asking a person a science question and rather, than consulting a science textbook, they try to recall the answer from memory only to get it wrong.

Well, AI could hallucinate on anything, and you don’t want it to hallucinate on a patient’s information. You need every bit of information to be accurate when you’re talking about a patient. This is something that will need to be solved before it can be deployed en masse.

Bias

AI chatbots need to be trained using a ton of data from across the internet. However, where does most of that data come from? The mass majority of it comes from countries like the USA, The UK, and other countries with more internet access. However, Africa is just an 11.73 million mi² blind spot for AI. Not much information in Africa is used to train AI. This means that chatbots like ChatGPT, Bard, Anthropic AI, and others don’t know many of the intricate details about the continent.

What are the major diseases that happen there? That’s one question that could mean life or death. As mentioned in the video, one person in Africa told ChatGPT for a diagnosis of a condition. He had symptoms including fever, dizziness, and a headache. The chatbot replied they had the flu; that was wrong. The thing is that the flu is more prevalent in the US, so ChatGPT automatically assumed that it was the flu. However, the person was suffering from tuberculosis, a condition not as prevalent in the States.

So, what’s the plan?

Let’s revisit this question, “Who are the innovators who are thinking about tutoring African students or providing Africans healthcare where the shortage of doctors is worse here than anywhere in the world?” Well, philanthropy will find them. The Gates Foundation plans on funding non-profit and for-profit organizations to help bring AI innovations to Africa. There’s a ton of potential for the technology to have a positive influence on Africa and other equally underprivileged places in the world.

Bill Gates’s grand plan is for AI technology to make a positive change. With the hard work and dedication of people like him, AI WILL be the technology to ferry us into a new age.

YouTube may now completely disable your video playback if you’re using an ad blocker

YouTube began its fight against ad blockers back in July when users started to notice a warning when the app detected one of these was in use. Now, YouTube is reportedly ramping up these efforts to eliminate these blockers from being used and encourage users to go ad-free with the Premium plan instead.
In a statement to The Verge, YouTube Communications Manager, Christopher Lawton, confirmed that the company is indeed launching a “global effort” to rid the platform of ad blockers in order to support its creators and diverse ecosystem. Instead, YouTube wants you to watch the video as intended with ads, or opt to sign up for YouTube Premium if ads are truly a nuisance to you.

The company has been testing new methods to detect and block ad blockers for months, and it is now rolling out these changes more broadly. Previously, the above notice would appear, but could still proceed with watching videos without ads. It appears that for some users though, now the videos are completely disabled unless the ad blocker is disabled or youtube.com is whitelisted.

Furthermore, the company maintains that ad blockers directly violate YouTube’s terms of service and cheat the platform’s creators around the world out of the earnings they would otherwise get from Adsense. This is a tricky situation as the platform has recently implemented changes that make ad breaks longer but less frequent, affecting the users’ online experience.

YouTube is not the first company to try to block ad blockers. Other streaming services, such as Hulu and Netflix, have also tried to do this. However, these efforts have largely been unsuccessful, as users have found ways to circumvent the blocks.

It is unclear how effective YouTube’s new ad blocking measures will be. However, it is clear that the company is set on enforcing the rules and do right by its creators, even if it causes an inconvenience to some.

Apple announced a slew of new Macs last night, that are powered by its new M3 family of processors. The company unveiled a new iMac powered by the M3, as well as new MacBook Pro’s in both 14- and 16-inch models. Now, those Macs are available for pre-order and will start shipping next week.

This is pretty common for Apple with its Macs. It normally starts pre-orders right after the event, with the products shipping a week later. So where can you pre-order these new goodies? Well a good place to go is Apple’s website or Best Buy.

Where to pre-order iMac with M3?

If you aren’t looking to get a semi-custom SKU of the new iMac, nor upgrade RAM or storage, then Best Buy is a good option. And does have in-store pick up of course. Best Buy does offer a couple different SKUs of the iMac, including the entry-level M3 with an 8-core processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. This is going to run you $1,299.

The other option that Best Buy has is the M3 in a 10-core configuration with 512GB of SSD storage, which is $1,699.

Prices are the same over at Apple’s website, but you also get the ability to change up the RAM and storage a bit more. Apple is offering up to 24GB of unified memory, and up to 2TB of SSD storage. Now the upcharges are quite significant here. But remember that you cannot change either of these after the fact, since it is all part of the processor now.

Let’s start off with the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M3. It’s available at Apple, Amazon and Best Buy for the regular price of $1,599. While Apple gives you options to increase unified memory to 16GB or 24GB.

Vivo X100 appears online with four ZEISS-boosted cameras

The Vivo X100 flagship series is coming, and one of the devices just appeared online with ZEISS-boosted cameras. An image of the device surfaced, thanks to Ice Universe, a well-known tipster.

In his post on X, he says that this is an “official image”, even though it can’t be found on Vivo’s Weibo page. In any case, it does look like an official image, plus one of the best-known tipsters says it is, so… there you go.

You can see that image below. It actually does resemble the sketch that surfaced yesterday, but this gives us a lot better look at the phone, of course. You’ll notice that the phone’s backplate is mostly flat, but it curves towards the edges.

There seems to be glass on the back of the phone, though vegan leather variants are a possibility. Also, the tipster says this is the VIvo X100, but it could be any member of the series, as we still don’t know if will there be any visual differences between them.

This camera oreo reminds us of some other flagship-grade phones in the market

What many of you will notice first in this image is the camera oreo. That camera oreo is huge, and it reminds me of the ones on the Xiaomi 13 Ultra and OPPO Find X6 Pro. There are four cameras stuffed inside it, and you’ll also notice ZEISS’ branding.

That camera oreo does protrude quite a bit on the back, as expected. Vivo probably used quite large sensors here, which makes us believe this is the Vivo X100 Pro+, not the regular model. It remains to be seen, though. We don’t know what camera differences to expect just yet.

The flagship Vivo X100 series is expected to launch in the near future. We still don’t know the launch date, though. The devices are expected to be the first to include LPDDR5T RAM, though, the fastest one out there

The Vivo X100 Pro+ will be immensely powerful

The Vivo X100 Pro+ model is also said to include a 6.78-inch QHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is also rumored for this model, and a powerful camera setup.

A 50-megapixel main camera (Sony’s IMX898 sensor, OIS) is said to be backed by a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera (Sony’s IM589 sensor). A 50-megapixel portrait camera (Sony’s IMX758 sensor) was also mentioned in rumors. The same goes for a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto unit (Samsung’s ISOCELL HP3 sensor, 10x optical zoom).

Fast wired and wireless charging will also be supported, and the charger will be included in the box.

Sundar Pichai defends Google in DOJ case, says it’s doing business

On Monday, Google CEO Sundar Pichai was grilled by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) over an antitrust case alleging that the company abused its power to stifle competition in the online search market. As expected, he painted Google in a good light, saying that it is only doing business. It has no intention to harm others. As part of his testimony, the CEO went back to the Internet Explorer era and said the industry has operated this way for decades.

The DOJ has accused Google of strangling rivals in the search industry by unfair means. The Justice Department has questioned the company’s tactics such as defaulting its search engines on its products and paying other device manufacturers to do the same. Most notably, Google pays Apple a whopping $18 billion every year to make its search engine default on the Safari browser for iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Sundar Pichai contested this argument by saying that prioritizing one’s own products isn’t a new practice in the industry. To prove his point, the Google CEO showed a letter from July 22, 2005. Google’s then-top lawyer David Drummond had sent the letter to Microsoft’s then-general counsel Brad Smith showing concern over the launch of Internet Explorer 7, which debuted in beta five days later.

Drummond’s concern was about the browser’s default search engine. The search bar that appeared next to the URL bar defaulted users to MSN. Microsoft did plan to “honor” the default search engine setting from previous versions of IE. However, according to Drummond, those settings were buried under the system menus. Not many people knew about the feature and fewer used it to change their default search engine.

The Google lawyer added that Microsoft should offer IE7 users a choice screen where they can easily pick the default. “Google believes that the search market should remain competitive,” he said. Microsoft didn’t do that. Sundar Pichai pointed out this to show the DOJ that companies have been self-prioritizing for decades. The practice has only gotten more ruthless in recent years.

Pichai says Google’s deal with Apple is nothing more than business

As expected, Pichai had to answer many questions about Google’s deal with Apple. He said that the company spends lavishly on these deals because “they’re a good deal.” According to the Google CEO, the deals ensure that “more people do more Google searches” and “everybody involved in the deal gets paid.”

“In such a complex and fast-moving landscape, that’s the only way to compete,” Pichai added (via The Verge). “It’s a business move, in other words, and there’s a big difference between a business move you don’t like and one that’s illegal.” The Google CEO followed Prabhakar Raghavan, its senior vice president responsible for search and ads, to the hot seat. The DOJ will hear the company’s defense for a few more weeks. The court may not announce its ruling until next year.

Details leak on AMD Ryzen Phoenix and Ryzen Hawk Point APUs

Details have surfaced regarding new Ryzen Phoenix and Ryzen Hawk Point APUs from AMD, and the leaks mention a few key details including thread and core count. The APUs in the Ryzen Phoenix family are from the 7000G series and are reportedly meant for desktops, while the Ryzen 8000 series with the Hawk Point family of APUs are meant for laptops. Both set of APUs are expected to be officially unveiled by AMD by CES 2024.

Although it’s also worth noting that the Phoenix APUs could be revealed by AMD before the end of 2023. Both sets of APUs should start arriving in their respective hardware throughout 2024. It’s still unclear exactly when devices with these chips would be available on the market however. It’s also unclear what the cost will be. In fact a few of the details about the Phoenix APU family are listed as TBD. This includes not only the price but also the base and max clock speeds as well as the GPU.

AMD Phoenix and Hawk Point APUs will have three models each

According to Wccftech who spotted the leak @harukaze5719 on X, there will be three SKUs from each of the two APU families. Though it appears that only two of the SKUs are listed. For the Phoenix APU family this seems to include the Ryzen 5 7500G and the Ryzen 3 7300G. Both of which will come in a “Pro” model and a “non-Pro” model. Both have a TDP of 65W but do have different core and thread counts. The Ryzen 7500G will supposedly have a core count of 6 and a thread count of 12. The Ryzen 3 7300G meanwhile will have a core count of 4 and a thread count of 8.

When it comes to the Hawk Point APU family the Ryzen 3 8440U and Ryzen 5 8540U will have an estimated TDP of 28W. As for core and thread counts these will reportedly be 4 and 8 for the Ryzen 3 8440U. While the Ryzen 5 8540U will have counts of 6 and 12.

Samsung remains top smartphone manufacturer in Q3 2023: Canalys

Samsung is still the top smartphone manufacturer, Canalys has confirmed in its Q3 2023 report. The company is not only still the top OEM, but it increased its lead ahead of Apple, compared to the same period last year.

Just to be clear, Samsung does have less market share overall than in Q3 2022, but it has more than Apple, which is second-placed. Samsung is holding 20% of the market, compared to the 17% that Apple holds. Last year, it was 22% for Samsung, and 18% for Apple.

Xiaomi is third-placed with 14% of the market. That’s the same percentage the company held a year ago. OPPO is fourth with 9%, down from 10% last year. TRANSSION rounds up the top 5 list with 9%, up from 6% last year.

Canalys notes that the global smartphone market is showing signs of recovery. It also said that Samsung delivered 57.2 million smartphones in the third quarter of this year.

Now, global smartphone shipments fell by 1% in Q3 2023, to 293.4 million. Those are good news, though, as the downturn is slowing down, and signs of recovery are visible, as noted earlier.

Samsung was boosted by its foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, in the third quarter of this year. Apple, on the other hand, has seen good sales thanks to its iPhone 15 series of devices.

It will be interesting to see what will happen in the fourth quarter, with holiday sales and everything going on. And, of course, the numbers for the entire year.

Xiaomi retained its position, which was kind of expected, and the same goes for OPPO. TRANSSION is a company you may not be familiar with, but it’s a company behind several smartphone brands, including TECNO, Infinix, and Itel.
