Firstly, you can embed Spotlight videos, public Stores, and Public Profiles on different sites. You can either embed your content on the web version of the app or the mobile version. To embed using the website, find the content and simply copy its link. Then, you’ll be able to embed that link onto your site.

Using the mobile version is similar. When you find the content, tap on that post’s options and tap on the embed option. You’ll copy the code to your clipboard. After that, you’ll then be able to paste to where you need to paste it.

This feature should be available for pretty much everyone. If you don’t see the option just yet, then you’ll want to update the app on your phone. If you still don’t see it, you might just want to wait a little while. It might not have made it to you.

Meta Quest 3 teardown shows off its massive battery size

In a recent iFixit video, the Meta Quest 3 went through some surgical procedures. This video shows fans how much larger the battery on this new VR headset is in comparison with its predecessor. From the video, it is clear that the battery takes up the majority of the space in the visor, which is the part of the headset that sits in front of the user’s eyes.

Meta says that the visor on the Quest 3 is about 40% smaller than that on its predecessor. The company also did well to increase the battery life on the headset. The battery capacity on the Quest 2 is 14Wh and the Quest 3 packs a 19.44Wh battery capacity which is larger.

Despite this increase in battery capacity, the size of the visor that holds the battery didn’t see any increase, instead, a reduction in size. However, users will get to feel this increase in battery capacity in the weight of the new headset. Here’s the reason behind the increase in battery capacity yet reduced visor size on the Meta Quest 3.

Changes to the internal components on the Meta Quest 3 explain its slim profile during teardown

During the teardown, the folks at iFixit aimed to understand how repairable this new headset is as well as its performance. While this headset doesn’t have a repair manual, iFixit was able to work around getting it open and revealing its parts. After the teardown, the new Meta Quest 3 got a repairability score of 4/10 meaning fixing a broken one will be difficult.

To access the battery, the faceplate is taken off, and doing so is easy since only clips hold it down. The faceplate holds the antenna bracket, press connector, microphone, and the new time of flight sensor. Accessing the battery still requires taking out the heat sink system as well as the mainboard which holds the Snapdragon 8 XR2 Gen 2.

Finally, one can see the battery after taking out all the components in the previous paragraphs. The battery takes up a lot of space in the new Meta Quest 2 headset. Despite its size, the headset manages to be smaller than the competition thanks to the upgraded LCD lens panels.

This new LCD lens panel design doesn’t require much gap like on the Meta Quest 2. With this improvement, the Quest 3 can save more space to house its larger battery while not increasing in size. Despite the size reduction, the larger battery still makes the Quest 3 heavier than its predecessor.

Other VR headsets from the competition take different approaches to storing the battery. Most, including the Quest Pro, keep the battery on the rear strap padding to balance the weight on the user’s head. Apple, for its part, aims to remove the battery from the head entirely by making it a carry-on accessory.

This is a feature that you’ll like if you don’t like sudden spikes in volume while using YouTube. They can startle you or be a nuisance if you’re trying to keep quiet. Well, YouTube is bringing the new Stable volume feature.

This is like a built-in compressor for YouTube. It will minimize the volume of louder parts of the video you’re watching. This way, you’ll have a more balanced listening experience. The Stable Volume feature is only for the mobile version of the app. YouTube will enable this by default.

If you want to turn it off, go to the settings and tap on the Advanced settings button. There, you’ll see the toggle that will switch the feature off.

Press to 2x

There are times when you want to speed up your video, so the company has a way of doubling the play speed of your video. You can do so from the video’s options. However, what if you don’t want to have to go back and forth between the options just to change the speed?

Well, YouTube is bringing a new Press to 2x feature. In order to use this feature, all you have to do is hold your finger down on the screen. The video will then double in speed. In order to change it back to regular speed, just lift your finger. This feature will work in both portrait and fullscreen modes.

Easier seeking

This feature actually brings two changes. First off, don’t you hate it when you’re trying to find a specific part of a video, but the thumbnail preview is too small while seeking? This makes it harder to find that sweet spot you’re looking for. Well, with the new update, the thumbnail preview will be much bigger. In fact, it will take up pretty much the entire screen. No more squinting to see if you passed that one part in your favorite video.

As for the second change, if you have a change of heart, and you want to go back to the spot you were at, it could be a challenge. You can try finding that exact point you left off at and miss the mark. Well, the new update alleviates this. When you go back to the spot you left off, your phone will vibrate when you reach the spot. After you lift your finger, the seeker will snap right back to where you were.

Screen lock

When you’re watching a video, it’s easy for you to accidentally tap on the screen and interrupt your content. Maybe you mistakingly tap on the Next video button or you minimize it. That’s frustrating, but YouTube has a solution.

This feature has been in testing for a little while, but it’s finally making its way to the public. The screen lock tool will make it so that your fingers don’t interact with the screen while the video is in full-screen mode. This way, when your fingers touch the screen, you won’t affect your video.

To activate it, tap on the little gear icon on the upper right of the screen. Under the settings, tap on the Lock screen button. If you want to disable it, you can simply tap the screen to bring up the unlock button. You’ll find the button right under the video timeline.

The ‘You’ tab

The You Tab is the new layout on YouTube that combines your Library and Accounts page. In the tab, you’ll see all of the content that you’ll find in your Library. This includes your videos, history, playlists, etc. Also, above that content, you’ll see a collection of chips containing your account settings.

These chips will have options like the switch account, Google account, Incognito search, and more. It’s an all-in-one section with some of your most important options and content.

Search by voice or song

We heard about this feature not too long ago, and it’s finally making its way to the public. If you’re looking for a song, but you don’t know the name of it, you’ll be able to find it by using just a short audio sample. If you can play a short recording of the song, the app will use AI to identify it. After that, it will pull up search results for that song.

However, what if you don’t have access to the song? Don’t worry; you can either play the song or just hum it. The app will try its best to find the song based on what it hears.

New animations

Now, here come the cosmetic changes. We’re used to hearing YouTubers say this line “Be sure to subscribe for more content”. Well, when the creator says those magic words, you’ll see a visual effect on the actual subscribe button urging you to subscribe. Also, when you tap on the button, you’ll see a little sparkle animation play. It adds a little visual flair to such a mundane action.

Also, when a video is newly posted, the app will show you the “like” counter update in real-time for the first 24 hours. Not only that, but the top comments now rotate, so you will always see fresh comments at the top.

YouTube’s new look on TVs

When you’re using YouTube on your TV, you’ll see details about the video you’re watching in a vertically scrolling panel. This panel shows you information like the description, comments, subscribers, etc.

Google to be investigated by South Africa over news ad revenue

Google will reportedly face investigation in South Africa from the country’s Competition Commission over potentially anti-competitive practices with news publishers. Companies like Meta may end up facing the same probes. Over the past few years people have steadily been moving towards getting their news online. Whether that be on mobile devices like phones and tablets or through computer browsers. A side effect of this transition though has been larger websites like Google and Facebook gobbling up readership to generate ad revenue, by showcasing snippets of news ripped from content put out by news publishers.

Both companies have already been met with stiff criticisms in parts of the US, Canada, and elsewhere over this very matter. Google even recently agreed to a large payment to publishers in Germany. This practice by both companies has been criticized for a few years now. So it shouldn’t be surprising that regulators from other regions are taking a closer look.

Google and Meta may use bargaining power to unfairly compete with news organizations for ad revenue

According to Reuters unfair competition over ad revenue with news publishers won’t be the only focus of investigation. But it does seem to be a big part of it. The probes aim to see if Google and Meta use their considerable bargaining power to leverage the ad revenue. Additionally it seeks to discover if “market features” have any sort of impact on that competition.

Commissioner Doris Tshepe sees this as a pivotal moment for the investigation. As the funding needed to publish or broadcast news isn’t coming from all the same sources as it used to. Much of the revenue from online news comes from advertising. Though you will still find some publications charging a subscription fee as you would for traditional print publications.

Google and Meta are also but two companies whose websites will be under the microscope. Reuters notes that X, Bing, YouTube, TikTok, and Google Ads will be included in in the inquiry.

Fantom Foundation Suffers Wallet Hack Via Google Chrome 0-Day Flaw

It has been revealed that the main target of the attack was an employee of the Fantom Foundation.

The Fantom Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports the Fantom blockchain network, suffered a data breach apparently, due to a zero-day security vulnerability in Google Chrome.

Apparently, the attackers were able to exploit the flaw to steal the private keys to the Fantom Foundation’s wallets, which allowed them to steal over $550,000 in cryptocurrency. This was confirmed by the Foundation on its official Twitter (Now X) account, though the incident is still under investigation for a definitive conclusion.

While information regarding the hack is scarce, discussions among users on The Fantom Foundation’s Telegram channel suggest that the exploited zero-day vulnerability may be related to a heap buffer overflow vulnerability within Google Chrome’s WebP format, assigned a high 8.8 CVSS score (CVE-2023-4863). This vulnerability enables a remote attacker to execute an out-of-bounds memory write through a specially crafted HTML page.

According to the Fantom Foundation, only a small number of wallets were compromised and the significant majority of Fantom Foundation funds (more than 99%) were unaffected and remain secure. It was also disclosed that the primary target of the attack was an employee of the Foundation.

“A Fantom employee’s personal wallets were compromised. Some of these impacted wallets were labelled “Foundation Wallets”, but they were no longer being utilized by the organization and had been reassigned to a Fantom employee, making this a targeted personal attack. The funds lost by the employee are currently being tracked and investigated.”

On the other hand, Crypto and Blockchain security firm CertiK has also confirmed the data breach by tweeting that “Fantom Foundation wallets have been drained on Ethereum and Fantom. So far we can confirm that Fantom: Foundation Wallet 20 lost ~$470k on FTM and Fantom: Foundation Wallet 18 lost at least ~$187k on ETH.

OnePlus 12 will outperform the Galaxy S24 in the Display panel

Almost every major specification for the Galaxy S24 series is known (though leaked) at this point. An upgrade in PWM for the Galaxy would be a significant improvement, but there have been no reports or rumors on this matter yet. Therefore, it might remain at the same 240Hz as last year.

Apart from the display, both devices will run on the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform. OnePlus has also introduced some noteworthy features. According to SamMobile, the OnePlus 12 will come with an impressive 24GB of RAM. In comparison, the base variants of the Galaxy S24 series devices might only offer 8GB of RAM, as reported by Alvin on X. While the difference in performance might not be substantial, having more RAM won’t hurt.

These users will get a warning to stop using ad blockers while streaming and instead subscribe to Premium to stream without ads.

Failure to disable the ad blocker will lead to the user’s ban from YouTube’s video streaming platform. Smartphone shipments hit decade-low in Q3 2023: Counterpoint

The first half of 2023 wasn’t kind to the smartphone industry. Sales dropped globally, with pretty much every major vendor suffering a decline in shipments. It appears the second half won’t be any better. According to market research firm Counterpoint, smartphone sales declined eight percent YoY (year-on-year) in the third quarter of 2023, dropping to the lowest Q3 levels in a decade.

The global smartphone market continued its decline in Q3 2023

Counterpoint’s research shows that global smartphone shipments have declined YoY for the ninth consecutive quarter in Q3 2023. This means the market hasn’t recovered since the second quarter of 2021. The firm says consumer demand continues to remain low amid economic uncertainties due to various global issues. However, it expects this downward spiral to finally stop in the year-ending quarter.

The signs of this recovery can be seen when comparing the smartphone sales volume for Q2 and Q3. Shipments have grown about two percent QoQ (quarter-on-quarter). New foldable launches from Samsung and the arrival of the iPhone 15 series may have triggered this growth. With festive sales all over the world in the fourth quarter, the industry may post a positive YoY change in shipments in Q4 2023.

The overall shipment volume for the full year may remain lower than in 2022, though. In fact, Counterpoint expects annual shipments to be at the lowest level in the past decade. The first says this is “largely due to a shift in device replacement patterns, particularly in developed markets.” People are now holding onto their phones longer than before. Extended update support from vendors may be one of the reasons for this shift.

Samsung remains the world’s largest smartphone company

Samsung has been the world’s largest smartphone company for several years now. It occasionally concedes the top spot to Apple (mostly in the fourth quarter of the year), but leads the chart for the full year. Things may remain unchanged this year as well. The Korean firm led the Q3 2023 chart by a healthy margin. It captured 20 percent of the global market this past quarter.

Apple sits at the second spot with a 16 percent market share. Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo make up the top five smartphone brands, with the three Chinese companies accounting for 12 percent, 10 percent, and 8 percent of global sales, respectively. None of the top five companies increased its market share in Q3 2023. Honor, Huawei, and Transsion Group (Tecno maker) increased their shipments but not enough to break into the top five.
