But also confirmed that the top layer of glass is still Gorilla Glass 5 which is what the original model used as well.

That would suggest that the glass is being referred to as more durable due to some other part of the glass. But we’d still highly recommend trying to avoid any sort of potential damage. Basically, don’t bang the watch up against anything. Don’t toss it into a glove compartment with other stuff. And to be extra careful, maybe just ensure it’s never laid face down.

Google officially unveiled the Pixel Watch 2 back on October 4 alongside the rollout of Android 14, the Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro phones. The watch is now officially available to buy and will begin shipping this month. Which combination you pick depends on when exactly it will be delivered.

The infamous RTX 4090 cable melting issues have apparently returned which means owners of the high-end GPU will have a new thing to worry about. The problem originally popped up back during the very early days of the RTX 4090’s release. With many users having reported the connector cables of their GPU melting and inevitably causing the death of the GPU. But these issues also all surfaced around or before the six-month mark. With variances based on which card model a user might have.

Now a user on the PCMR subreddit named Byogore (via Tom’s Hardware) is reporting the cable melting issue with his ASUS RTX 4090 GPU that’s more than a year old. Which presents an entirely new stress for anyone that didn’t have the issue when it first began.

It was concerning for consumers when the cable melting issue popped up at all. But at least when the original issue surfaced it was thought that it couldn’t happen to units beyond a certain point. Byogore’s year-old card now shows that isn’t the case. And that means that it’s possible for any remaining cards in use with the same connector hardware could see the problem at any point down the line. Even years from now.

The issue appears to stem from the 12VHPWR power connector tech that NVIDIA was using on the first batch of cards. These have since been replaced by an upgraded connector called the 12V-2×6 power connector. Which as of yet hasn’t had any reported melting issues. But now that the problem can surface on older cards, RTX 4090 owners with cards still working will no doubt be worrying about whether or not that will last for much longer. The good news is that there’s a good chance the card would be covered under warranty. If there is an issue that pops up. At least until it’s a few years down the road. When those warranties will probably be ending.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 comes out on top in this drop test

Foldables have always been a matter of concern when it comes to durability. However, things appeared different in reality for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Google’s Pixel Fold in a recent drop test. Surprisingly the inner soft screens of the foldable devices survived. But the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Galaxy S23 Ultra suffered some notable damage.

According to Sammobile‘s report, Allstate Protection Plans wanted to test the durability of current flagships. And they selected the four most expensive devices for the test. The test involved dropping the phones from a height of 6 feet onto a concrete surface with the screens facing downward using a machine designed for this purpose.

In the first test, both the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the Galaxy S23 Ultra were dropped with the screen facing down. Surprisingly, neither of them remained in a usable condition, with the glass coming off. When dropped on their backs, the same story repeated. It’s unfortunate to see the iPhone sustain the same damage despite being lighter, having a ‘ceramic shield’ for protection, and featuring a stronger titanium frame.

The foldables survived the test with their soft inner displays intact

Both the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the Google Pixel Fold surprisingly remained flawless even after two drops with the inner screen facing down from the same 6-foot height. The raised borders around the display suffered some minor damage, but the display remained flawless.

However, dropping them with the cover display facing down resulted in similar damages to the single-slab offerings.

Although the testing environment wasn’t ‘perfectly controlled’, it was close enough to draw conclusions. Namely, a protective case should always be used, regardless of what the company claims about durability.

The soft and fragile foldable displays likely survived the test for two reasons. First, the raised border provided protection, preventing the inner display from coming into contact with the concrete. Additionally, when unfolded, the phone’s larger surface area experienced greater air resistance when falling flat.

However, it’s important not to rely solely on this test, as the surface in your specific case might not be completely flat, and the angle of impact could differ. Therefore, using a protective case for your expensive foldable device is advisable and may prove helpful in real-world situations.

Galaxy S20 & more gets Samsung’s October update

Samsung seems to be in a hurry to update Galaxy devices to the October 2023 Android security patch. Over the past few days, it has pushed the latest SMR (Security Maintenance Release) to over a dozen models, including all recent foldables and S-series flagships. More devices are now joining the party. We can confirm that this month’s security update is available for the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy A52s.

Samsung pushes the October update to a bunch of Galaxy devices

Starting with the Galaxy S20 series, Samsung is rolling out the latest security patch for both 4G and 5G versions of its 2020 flagships. The 4G models are getting the update in Europe and Latin America with the firmware build number G98*FXXSIHWI7. The same update for the 5G models comes with the build number G98*BXXSIHWI7, with the rollout beginning in Europe. Neither model is picking up anything more than this month’s security fixes.

It’s a similar story for the Galaxy Note 20 series as well. Samsung is pushing the October SMR to 4G and 5G models of its last Note-branded phones in Europe. The former lineup is receiving the update with firmware version N98*FXXS8HWJ1, while that for the latter is N98*BXXS8HWJ1. Once again, the update doesn’t bring anything more than the latest SMR, which contains 46 vulnerability patches.

Coming to the Galaxy Z Flip, the October update is available for the original clamshell foldable in Europe and South Korea. The new build numbers in the two regions are F700FXXUDKWI6 and F700NKOU4KWI7, respectively. The 5G version of the phone is getting this update in South Korea with the build number F707NKSU3KWI7. For a change, the package also contains some device stability and reliability improvements.

The Galaxy A52s is another Samsung phone that is now getting the October update. The mid-range model is receiving the latest security patch in Europe with firmware version A528BXXS5EWJ1. Like the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Note 20, it isn’t picking up any additional goodies. All of these Galaxy smartphones will get the latest SMR globally over the next few weeks.

This month’s security patch is now available widely for the Galaxy S22

Along with rolling out the new security patch to more phones, Samsung is expanding the availability of the update for other devices globally. Last week, the company pushed the October SMR to the Galaxy S22 series in the US. It’s now available in Europe and Asia as well. The older plans that T-Mobile plans to move users from are Magenta, Simple Choice / Select Choice, Magenta 55+, One Plan, and Simple Choice Business. Once the migration starts, users on the plans mentioned above will be moved to newer plans. The new plans that T-Mobile will move customers to are Magenta To, Magenta, Essentials Select, Go5G, Go5G 55, and Business Unlimited Advanced. From the leaked document, it is clear that this migration will be in a particular order and not just randomly.

Users on Simple Choice / Select Choice will move to Magenta or Essentials Select. Those on Magenta or Magenta 55 will move to Go5G or Go5G 55, ONE Plan users will also move to Go5G. Lastly, Simple Choice Business users will move over to the newer Business Unlimited Advanced plan.

T-Mobile assures users that they aren’t raising the prices of the plans, but just moving users over to newer plans. However, prices for the newer plans are slightly higher than the older plans these users are migrating from. By October 17, users of older T-Mobile plans will start getting notifications signalling this change.

Threads by Instagram has been fighting the good fight to retain its daily users following an initial dip shortly after its launch. The way it’s been going about it is by regularly adding new features to excite its community, and this week is no exception.
As announced today via the official @threads and Instagram boss Adam Mosseri (@mosseri)‘s Thread accounts, there are two new features that will be rolled out this week. First, and more importantly, you will now be able to edit a thread for up to five minutes after you’ve posted it. Second, you will now be able to start or reply to a thread using your voice.
The ability to edit a Thread has been a popular ask among the app’s users, particularly those that flocked to it seeking an alternative to X (formerly Twitter) and its tendency to lock away its most useful features behind a paywall. Currently, users on X have to subscribe to the Premium plan in order to edit a post. On Threads, the famous “edit button” will be available for free to all users and it rolls out beginning today.

To edit a post or reply, simply tap or click on the “…” menu on on the top right. The option to edit will only be available for the first five minutes your post is live, and it works to both fix or add text, as well as to add images.

Similarly, Threads is rolling out “voice threads,” or how I believe most people will refer to them – “voice notes.” To use your voice in order to start or reply to a thread, simply tap on the microphone icon. Then, when the recorder appears, tap (or press and hold) the record button to start. Recordings will also include auto-generated captions that you can make changes to before you finalize your post.

What’s missing?

However, as great as having both of these new features sound, there are some things to take into consideration. Although, there is no app update required to get them, I noticed that voice notes don’t seem to be available on the web app. This may by design or simply a matter of the feature not having completely rolled out yet.

Additionally, once a post is edited, there doesn’t seem to be any indication that the post has been changed or any edit history to speak of. Hopefully, this is in the works as this lack of transparency could lead to misinformation.

All in all, this is a huge win for Threads and a great incentive for new users to join the platform and existing ones to become more active. The team seems to be listening to user feedback and, slowly but surely, giving them the features they want.
