When almost every brand is talking about software support and increasing the number of promised OS upgrades, have you ever heard about hardware support? Well, Google did. Google just promised to keep the original spare parts for the Pixel 8 series devices available for the next 7 years.

This happens in a scenario where Google promises 7 years of OS, security patch, and feature drop upgrades to keep the Pixel 8 series devices up to date in terms of software until 2030.

And 7 years is a pretty long time for hardware parts. The battery has to keep powering the device through regular usage without losing capacity. There’s also the risk of accidental physical damage, from the back glass to the front display.

Although Google has not mentioned where to buy the repair parts, rational thinking suggests that it might be iFixit, their official replacement part supplier for their last offering, i.e., the Google Pixel 7 series devices.

The reason Google is providing 7 years of spare parts support to the Pixel 8 series

A lot of users upgrade their devices just because the battery capacity dips below their needs. Smartphone batteries are generally rated for only 80% of their capacity after 800 charge cycles. That means charging only once a day may make you want to replace it within 2 years.

This issue is becoming especially noticeable for the latest non-Pro iPhones. Some users have to replace the battery. Not everyone can break the bank again after just one year of usage. Often, they end up using batteries from third-party manufacturers in their premium phones. This is because the original component isn’t available for a reasonable price.

And speaking of other components like the glass and the display panel, well, accidents happen. Repairing a smartphone instead of buying a new one also means doing good for the planet by not turning that otherwise functional piece of tech into e-waste.

Google is putting their effort into making replacement parts available, probably for this exact reason.

Experts warn men having relationships with AI girlfriends will make loneliness worse

This revelation prompted her to delve deeper into the societal shift toward greater acceptance and openness regarding AI companions. Based on her findings, this trend is gaining momentum, thanks to apps like Replika—a widely used app offering AI-driven digital partners. The app has experienced remarkable growth, surpassing 10 million users in 2022, with a significant 35% surge in users during the pandemic.

Additionally, to make matters worse, some users have gone beyond casual interactions, reporting engagements, and even marriages with their AI partners.

Why are people leaning towards AI?

While the specific reasons differ from person to person, Vittert believes that the allure of AI partners lies in their ability to fulfil emotional needs. This is because virtual companions adapt to users, creating an idealized version of a relationship devoid of real-world challenges, thus crafting the imaginary perfect partner.

Moreover, this issue extends beyond the desire for a perfect partner, as some individuals see an interesting business opportunity. Caryn Marjorie, for instance, created an AI version of herself designed as a virtual girlfriend. And within days, she attracted 1,000 paying subscribers and amassed a waitlist exceeding 15,000 people.

“The prevalence of these AI girlfriends has increased so dramatically over the past couple of years. We’re going from AI girlfriends who you text with to ones you can send pictures with. There’s this very quick blend of the physical and the emotional,” said Vittert.

Possible implications?

If this trend continues to grow at such a pace, the consequences of these AI partners could be profound. This is because the perfect nature of AI partners might dissuade men from engaging in real relationships with their inherent complexities, potentially leading to an influx of single men. This, in turn, could affect birth rates in the United States and other countries.

Google Sheets update adds emoji reactions for comments

Google is adding two new features to Sheets, which will be available in the next couple of weeks. After rolling out the ability to add emoji reactions to existing comments in Google Docs, the search giant announced this month the same feature will be available in Google Sheets.

According to Google, the ability to add emoji reactions on comments in Sheets will increase “collaboration by enabling you to quickly and creatively express your opinions about spreadsheet content.” Beyond that, it’s a fun way to convey your feedback on what’s otherwise a pretty standard process.

To add emoji reactions to comments in Google Sheets simply hover your mouse over the comment you want to react to and click “Add emoji reaction.” After that, you can select one of the two options available: 
  • Choose the emoji you want to add 
  • You can also enter search terms for an emoji.

Obviously, you’ll only be able to add emoji reactions to comments in Google Sheets if you have permission to comment or edit that document. Besides the ability to add emoji reactions in Sheets, Google also announced support for two additional field types for filtering in Connected Sheets for Looker: field only fields and parameters.

Both new features are now rolling out Rapid Release domains, but the ability to add emoji reactions to Google Sheets will only launch to Scheduled Release domains on October 19.

Everything added in this update will be available to all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts.

Apple users need to rush to update their devices once again. A month after patching two actively exploited iOS vulnerabilities, Apple has now released an emergency update addressing another zero-day under attack.

iOS 17.0.3 Fixes Privilege Escalation Zero-Day Under Attack

According to a recent advisory, Apple has addressed two severe vulnerabilities affecting its iOS devices with the latest update. Specifically, the patches arrive as an emergency update as the tech giant found one of these – the zero-day allowing elevated access on the target iOS devices, under attack in the wild.

Describing the vulnerabilities, the advisory marks the first vulnerability, CVE-2023-42824, as the actively exploited issue, targeting devices prior to iOS 16.6. Exploiting the flaw could allow a local attacker to gain elevated privileges on the respective devices. Apple patched the flaw with improved checks in the recent update.

The second vulnerability, CVE-2023-5217, is a known security flaw allowing remote code execution. This buffer overflow vulnerability recently gained the attention of researchers from Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) and The Citizen Lab, as they noticed active exploitation of the flaw with other iOS vulnerabilities to deploy the Predator spyware.

This vulnerability exists in the open-source libvpx video codec library, and since it became known, the vendors have separately patched the flaw for their products. First, it was Google and Microsoft that addressed the matter for their chrome and Edge browsers, respectively, and now, it’s Apple, patching the flaw by updating to the libvpx 1.13.1.

Apple Also Fixed The iPhone 15 Overheating Issue

Alongside releasing the security fixes, Apple also addressed another major performance issue with iPhones with iOS 17.0.3. With iPhone 15 running the earlier iOS versions (until 17.0.2), users have complained about overheating issues. That’s what Apple has addressed with this update.

So now, iPhone users need to update their devices (once again) with the latest OS updates to receive the relevant security and performance fixes.

Pixel 8 Pro shines in drop test, outperforms competitors

The Pixel 8 Pro appears to be a sturdy flagship smartphone. It held up strong in a recent drop test at the YouTube channel PBKReviews. The device didn’t suffer any significant damage to the body despite the YouTuber dropping it onto concrete multiple times. The new Google phone fared better than two of its biggest competitors, the Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The Pixel 8 Pro passed a drop test with flying colors

The drop test from PBKReviews involved a total of four drops of the phone onto a concrete floor. Firstly, the Pixel 8 Pro was dropped from a waist height with its screen facing down. The device suffered some damage to its aluminum frame in the corner that first hit the floor. The screen also saw some minor scratches in the same corner, but it continued to work fine. It didn’t have any touch or display issues. The back of the phone was crystal clear.

The YouTuber then dropped the phone onto its screen from a head height. Surprisingly, the screen still had no cracks or major scratches. Some minor dents could be seen along the edges, but the frame once again absorbed most of the pressure. As the YouTuber notes, the Galaxy S23 Ultra suffered bigger cracks around the edges when dropped onto concrete from a similar height. The Samsung phone’s curved edges make it a little vulnerable to such cracks.

After two drops, the Pixel 8 Pro’s back glass still has no damage. The phone is then flipped over and dropped from a waist height with its back facing down. Once again, the damage is limited to a corner and the camera bridge, with the glass intact and in one piece. The final drop sees the new Google phone dropped sideways. One of the corners hit the ground first and got a dent, which extended to the screen as well. However, the device is still functioning.

The new Pixel is fairly resistant to scratches

After four drops, the YouTuber put the Pixel 8 Pro in a bag of sand and gravel to check how it handles scratches. He manually rubbed some sand all over the phone, but that did little damage. We can see some scratches on the screen and the camera bridge on the back, but the device passed this test with flying colors too. The YouTuber concludes that the Pixel 8 Pro handles drops and scratches better than the iPhone 15 Pro Max. You can watch the full video below.

iPhone 14 batteries degrading faster because they’re cheaper: Report

iPhones have long had one of the best battery life out of any smartphone. However, since the release of the iPhone 14 series last year, many users have raised complaints about their battery health degrading faster than ever. Now, according to X leaker @RGcloud, this issue might be due to Apple’s use of cheaper batteries in both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 series.

According to the report, flagship phone batteries, such as those in the iPhone 13 series, boast an average lifespan of 800 charge cycles. In contrast, the batteries in the newer iPhone models reportedly only last for around 600 charge cycles, marking a significant departure. This was evident in reports from early August, where iPhone 14 users reported their batteries degrading to as low as 88%, raising some serious concerns.

Other reasons behind the battery health issues

While this report provides a plausible explanation, it’s important to note that RGcloud lacks a proven track record when it comes to Apple leaks. As a result, there is no way to completely verify this information. Therefore, if the rumour is false, other potential reasons for the battery degradation issue could include the fact that the screen of the iPhone 14 Pro is almost twice as bright as that of the iPhone 13 Pro, potentially placing additional strain on the battery.

Additionally, Apple’s official stance on battery health indicates that it is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charging cycles. Moreover, the company also offers free battery replacement for AppleCare+ users whose battery degrades to less than 80% in the first year of ownership.

Why would Apple use cheaper batteries?

If the rumours are true, RGcloud suggests that the company might have chosen cheaper batteries to balance costs, allowing the phone maker to maintain its familiar price tag while incorporating several new features.

However, for users concerned about their iPhone batteries, implementing features such as Optimized Battery Charging can help prevent overcharging and reduce strain on the battery.

Snapchat’s AI chatbot, My AI, has been met with some controversies for quite some time. It’s also been under scrutiny by governments, and now Android Headlines reports that a UK regulatory body has issued a warning against the chatbot, talking about potential risks to children’s privacy.

UK’s Commissioner’s Office issues a warning against Snapchat’s AI chatbot


The Commissioner’s Office (ICO)’s concerns mainly focus on children’s privacy and the fact that Snap’s allegedly failed to asses the privacy risks of the chatbot before it was officially launched. The issued warning doesn’t necessarily mean the regulatory body has found a breach, but if actions aren’t taken, the ICO may block the chatbot in the UK.The ICO’s main focus of concern is the children aged 13 to 17, who fall under the Children’s Design Code, a set of data protection rules that were implemented in 2021.

Snapchat’s My AI chatbot was introduced in February. Initially, the generative AI-powered chatbot was exclusive to Premium subscribers and was to be used as a virtual friend that could answer questions or offer advice. After the initial testing period, the chatbot was made available to everyone using Snapchat, including underage users.

However, there were some concerns over its actions. There have also been some situations where the chatbot has been giving inappropriate advice, despite Snap’s claims that it has strict moderation and safeguarding features. One example of said advice is the chatbot suggesting to a 15-year-old user ways to hide the smell of alcohol.

In response to the regulatory body’s warning, Snap has underlined that it’s committed to protecting user privacy and that it’s reviewing the ICO’s decision. The company said it will continue to collaborate with the ICO to ensure they are comfortable with the company’s risk assessment procedures.

Technical Analysis

The HyperBro loader variant used a digitally signed CyberArk binary for a DLL-Side Loading attack, resulting in the in-memory execution of a Cobalt Strike beacon.

Further analysis from EclecticIQ revealed another undocumented malware downloader using the PowerShell BitsTransfer module to fetch malicious binaries from a compromised Cobra DocGuard server.

The malware downloader also uses a DLL Side-Loading technique, which uses a signed McAfee binary, mcods.exe, to run the Cobalt Strike shellcode. This shellcode, however, uses the same Cobalt Strike C2 server linked with the HyperBro loader variant.

Cobra DocGuard’s compromised web server also hosted a Go language-based backdoor which has been termed “ChargeWeapon”. This backdoor was found to be uploaded by the same threat actor and is designed to get remote access. It also sends device and network information from a victim’s computer to a C2 server controlled by an attacker.

ChargeWeapon – GO Language-Based Backdoor

Once infected, the ChargeWeapon backdoor starts to transmit the data about the compromised host in JSON format and obfuscated by a base64 encoding. The information includes Hostname, IP address (Ipv4 and Ipv6 format), and Process tree. It also employs a POST request for C2 communication over 45[.]77[.]37[.]145:8443.

In addition to this, it also has capabilities that include interacting with remote devices over Windows default CLI, WMI execution, Base64 obfuscation during C2 connection, and Reading or writing files on the infected hosts. 

This backdoor uses multiple Go-language libraries like gopsutil, go-ole, wmi, and sys. A complete report about the malware downloader, backdoor, and other information has been published by Eclecticiq.

Is Google’s other navigation app going the wrong Waze?

As noted by autoevolution, navigation app Waze has been the recipient of many one-star reviews in the Google Play Store. One of the problems that has recently impacted Waze users was the breaking of dark mode on CarPlay in August. This resulted in retina-melting white light coming from the Waze app during the evening hours. It took about a month for Waze to disseminate a bug fix.
Waze is owned by Google and some of the best features that Waze has offered has already been included with Google Maps. These include allowing drivers to quickly share information about traffic, road repair, police activity, weather conditions, and more. The difference between the two is that while Google Maps will guide users on how to get from point “A” to point “B” quickly and safely, it will also recommend places for users to stay at their destination, where they can grab a good meal, or find entertainment.
Waze, on the other hand, is more focused on navigation and has some unique features such as using different voices, including the app user’s own melodious tones, to guide him/her to the destination. Complaints about Waze found in the Play Store include problems with the app crashing, traffic support missing, planned trips disappearing, a lag that makes the app hard to use, and more. 

Others complain that Waze no longer provides fast routes like it used to and some say that the app sent them into the middle of heavy traffic. Users who have used the app say that the focus should be on bug fixes and features instead of giving them the option to use “useless features like silly voices.”

Looking at a crystal ball, the future of Waze is not clear. Some believe that merging Waze with Google Maps would create a phenomenal navigation and travel app, but autoevolution’s sources say that Google has no plans to combine the two apps. The gang out in Mountain View still wants Maps and Waze to work independently, but closely.

Google did move the two teams together and they share work space, and Google Ads took over ad sales from Waze’s own marketing team. But is Waze slowly being shown the back door? There are many users who seem to stick with Google Maps no matter what. For example, with its focus on navigation, you’d expect Waze to be favored by ride-share

drivers who don’t need to know about the accommodations or restaurants available at a destination.

Very few ride-share drivers that I’ve seen use Waze and most stick to Google Maps. If Google is serious about keeping Waze around, it needs to find out why these drivers won’t use Waze. Personally, I find the navigation UI on Google Maps and Apple Maps to be much easier to use, but you might think otherwise.

Latest Android Auto bug steals the navigation bar

The navigation bar in Android Auto is experiencing issues due to a bug. Recently, some users have reported that the buttons on the navigation bar are not functioning properly, while others have discovered that the navigation bar disappears completely.

Android Auto is a mobile app that projects your Android phone’s screen onto your car’s infotainment system. It allows you to control certain features of your phone, such as navigation, music, and messaging, using your car’s touchscreen or steering wheel controls, helping you stay focused on the road while driving.

The navigation bar on the Android Auto projection on the car’s screen enables users to switch between apps, access Google Assistant, and open the app drawer. When the elements in the navigation bar stop functioning properly or the bar disappears entirely, users get locked into the app they are using, and this is the problem.

Users facing issues navigating through apps

A user reported on the Android Auto Help forum that he is unable to see the bottom application bar with his Samsung Galaxy Note 8, which is running Android 9 and Android Auto version 10.4.633624. However, he also reports that on his Xiaomi Note 7 with Android 10 and the same Android Auto version, everything works fine for him.

When the navigation bar disappears, it leaves that portion of the screen blank instead of utilizing the full screen.

Some users have found a potential solution to this problem, which involves uninstalling updates to the Android Auto app. Google is in the process of rolling out the next 10.5 update to Android Auto, although it’s not yet clear whether this update will fix the bug.

In the meantime, there are some solutions you can try if you are experiencing this issue. If you connect your phone to your car through a USB cable, you can attempt to resolve the problem by changing the cable or using a wireless connection if it’s available.
