Nmap Version 7.94 Released

The latest version of Nmap, 7.94, was released on its 26th birthday. The most significant upgrade was the migration of Zenmap and Ndiff from Python 2 to Python 3 across all platforms.

This new version of Nmap 7.94 was upgraded with more than a number of improvements, fixed some of the critical bugs, and added new Npcap, OS fingerprints, NSE scripts/libs, and other enhancements.

Nmap is a free and open-source network scanner, Port Scanner, and network Exploration Tool that supports all cross platforms, including Linux, Windows, UNIX, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, IRIX, Mac OS X, HP-UX, NetBSD, Sun OS, Amiga, and more.

“Nmap supports Vanilla TCP connect() scanning, TCP SYN (half open) scanning, TCP FIN, Xmas, or NULL (stealth) scanning, TCP ftp proxy (bounce attack) scanning, SYN/FIN scanning using IP fragments (bypasses some packet filters), TCP ACK and Window scanning, UDP raw ICMP port unreachable scanning, ICMP scanning (ping-sweep), TCP Ping scanning, Direct (non portmapper) RPC scanning, Remote OS Identification by TCP/IP Fingerprinting, and Reverse-ident scanning.”

Npcap is based on the discontinued WinPcap library, but it has significantly improved speed, portability, security, and efficiency. Npcap works on Windows 7 and later Windows versions.

The new Nmap 7.94 release not only benefits Windows but also supports cross-platform with a bunch of new libraries’ performance improvements.

Samsung will reportedly equip the Galaxy S24 Ultra with an improved 200MP camera. The company hasn’t developed a new sensor from scratch but optimized the ISOCELL HP2 sensor found on the Galaxy S23 Ultra for better picture quality and other improvements. It will call the optimized version ISOCELL HP2SX.

The information comes courtesy of reliable X (formerly Twitter) tipster Ice Universe. The source claims that the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s 200MP camera will have the same specs as the ISOCELL HP2. The latter has an optical format of 1/1.3-inch and packs 200 million pixels of 0.6 micrometers (μm) size. The camera uses 2×2 (4 in 1) pixel binning to capture 50MP shots and 4×4 (16 in 1) pixel binning to capture 12.5MP shots in low-light conditions.

In fact, the Galaxy S23 Ultra captures 12.5MP images by default. In this mode, the pixels have an optical size of 2.4μm. They can absorb adequate light for the best output in all lighting conditions. But if your environment is well-lit, you can manually switch to 50MP (1.2μm pixels) or 200MP modes to capture high-resolution photos. The sensor boasts Super Quad Phase Detection autofocus and 8K video recording at 30fps (frames per second).

Samsung has pushed several camera updates to the Galaxy S23 Ultra and the other models in the series since their launch earlier this year, adding new features and improvements. Of course, those updates only improve the software side of things. But hardware is only part of the overall camera experience. An optimized ISOCELL HP2 200MP sensor paired with an improved camera algorithm should bring notable quality improvements to the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra may get a new zoom camera

Samsung may not be giving the Galaxy S24 Ultra an entirely new primary camera, but it’s expected to upgrade the zoom hardware. The same source reported last month that the next-gen Ultra model will feature a 50MP sensor for 3x optical zoom. The current model uses 10MP cameras for both 3x and 10x optical zoom.

The updated lens reportedly has an optical size of 1/2.52 inches and features 0.7μm pixels. Like the main shooter, it will probably employ pixel binning to capture bright zoom photos in dim environments. However, the resolution upgrade allows for clearer photos at non-native zoom levels as well. The Galaxy S24 Ultra can capture much better 5x zoom photos thanks to the new camera, the source said. The new Samsung flagship will arrive in early 2024.

Now, in an effort to solve this issue, the US Copyright Office has initiated a public comment period until October 18th, during which regular citizens can share their views on AI and help address this ongoing debate.

This decision comes after multiple authors, visual artists, and source code developers sued companies like ChatGPT‘s OpenAI, as well as Microsoft, and Meta for using their original works in training AI systems without their consent. Additionally, the AI systems’ ability not only to use copyrighted data but also to mimic the styles of certain creators has exacerbated the situation.

Moreover, even news media outlets such as The New York Times are seriously considering legal action against OpenAI. This comes after OpenAI used web-scraping bots to extract information, even after the NYT modified its terms of service to prohibit the use of these tools.

The answers to 3 important questions

As per the Federal Register, the US Copyright Office is seeking answers to three critical questions concerning AI. First, it is exploring how AI should ethically and legally employ copyrighted materials during its learning process. Second, it is investigating whether AI-generated content can qualify for copyright protection, even when there is no human involvement. Lastly, it is delving into the matter of responsibility and accountability in cases of copyright disputes involving AI.

Furthermore, the Office is inviting public input on AI systems that imitate human voices and artistic styles. While traditional copyright law does not cover these personal attributes, they may intersect with state rights of publicity, unfair competition laws, and international treaty obligations. This aspect has gained particular prominence due to ongoing disputes in the entertainment industry, including lawsuits filed by comedian Sarah Silverman and authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey against OpenAI and Meta for using their works to train AI models.

Chisel Android Malware

Chisel mobile malware targets Android devices actively with the following key capabilities:-

  • Unauthorized access
  • Scanning files
  • Monitoring traffic
  • Stealing sensitive data
  • Network monitoring
  • Traffic collection
  • SSH access
  • Network scanning
  • SCP file transfer

It’s been reported that the Android devices that are used by the Ukrainian military are actively targeted via a malicious campaign in which the operators have used the stealthy Chisel mobile malware.

Chisel configures Tor for remote access using a modified Dropbear binary for SSH. It also scans the local networks and gathers information about the following things:-

  • Active hosts
  • Open ports
  • Banners

Moreover, the security analysts from the authoring organizations have tied Chisel with the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate’s (GRU’s) Main Centre for Special Technologies, GTsST, Sandworm.

Sony brought a powerful phone with a more powerful camera to IFA 2023

IFA 2023 is going on right now, and we’re seeing some fun and innovative tech. Sony attended the event and it showed off the next generation of its flagship Xperia phones. The company showed off the Sony Xperia 5 V at IFA.

Sony doesn’t really make phones for the average consumer anymore. The modern Xperia phones are for mobile photography nerds who want a customizable experience. These phones are great for people who tend to use the manual mode in their cameras.

The Xperia 5 V makes an appearance at IFA

This iteration might look similar to last year’s model, but there’s a notable difference. This iteration only has two cameras on the back. The Xperia 5 IV has three cameras on the back.

While this is the case, it’s not a downgrade. The Xperia 5 V uses the same 52MP main Exmor T backside illuminated (BSI) Type 1/1.35-inch stacked sensor that was present in the Xperia 1 V. That’s a notable upgrade, and it can switch between a 24mm and 48mm focal length. This means that it can take on the role of a 2x zoom camera. As for the other camera, this is a 12MP ultrawide camera.

Aside from the camera tech, this phone has some pretty robust specs. Starting off with the display, the Xperia 5 V has a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display. It uses Sony’s proprietary TV Bravia X1 image quality engine. This means that visuals will look amazing with this phone.

This phone will use the snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, so you can expect flagship-grade performance. That’s backed up by up to 12GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The base storage isn’t amazing, but there is still microSD card storage. Moving onto the battery, we’re looking at a 5000mAh cell. That’s pretty average for most phones nowadays.

Sony was able to bring a powerful phone with a powerful camera to the show, and this is why it got the Android Headlines award for Best of IFA.

Almost all companies globally provide their customers with support on social media or online chatbots. However, Apple is reportedly going in the opposite direction and wants to eliminate customer support on its social media accounts and Support Community.

As reported by MacRumors, citing sources familiar with the matter, Apple will soon stop supporting its customers through X (Twitter), YouTube, and Support Community. Thus, you’ll no longer be able to receive any kind of online support from these channels.

The change takes effect October 1, 2023, and starts with the @AppleSupport handle on X. One of the sources told the outlet that Apple customers will no longer receive any human response from this account. Instead, they receive automated messages that guide them toward other ways of contacting the company for support.

Apple to eliminate online customer support on social platforms and its Support Community

The decision also extends to the Apple Support channel on YouTube. Apple already responded to the technical questions in the comments of each video. However, from October 1 onwards, no technical assistance will be provided to customers on that channel.

The tech giant also decided to remove the paid Community Specialist role from the Support Community. The Apple Support Community is an online forum where users can receive help from experts in the company’s products and services.

The question that now pops up is how Apple wants to support its customers technically. Well, the company has offered the affected employees to move to a phone-based support role. This means you must pick up the phone and call the company instead of writing your issue online. To justify the decision, Apple reportedly argued that customers prefer phone-based support.

The sources familiar with the matter said Apple’s decision caused anger and frustration among the affected employees. The company only allows employees with a medical exemption to remain on chat-based support roles.

Employees who can’t work in the phone-based support roles should leave the company. The transition could be completed by November, and employees receive training to provide phone support.

Meta’s X (formerly Twitter) rival Threads is getting an important new feature. The company has finally added a search function to the new social media app. The feature is still barebones though, only allowing you to look up profiles. You can’t search posts using keywords or phrases.

Meta launched Threads in early July as an alternative to Twitter, which recently rebranded to X. It debuted as an Instagram app and immediately gained millions of users. One can log into Threads using their Instagram credentials, so users of the latter platform thronged the latest offering from Meta. The new app surpassed 100 million users just a few days after its launch.

However, Threads quickly lost its charm and half of its users. Much of this downfall was due to the lack of features on the platform. It lacked basic features like search and reposting. Early last month, Meta announced that these features would arrive soon. It rolled out reposting last week. Meta also launched a web version of the platform around the same time. It’s now adding a search function too.

Meta adds a search function to its Threads social media app

“Get excited — search is coming to Threads,” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced via a post on the platform on Thursday. His post was accompanied by a GIF featuring Vin Diesel saying “I bet you gonna enjoy this.” It’s a clip from the Fast and Furious film franchise. The way Mark presented his announcement, it’s evident that Threads users highly wanted a search function. Thankfully, it’s now available.

The search button sits next to the home button on the bottom navigation bar of Threads. Tapping it presents you with a search bar at the top, followed by accounts that you may want to follow. Unfortunately, as said before, you can’t search for posts yet. The search function only lets you find accounts. You can follow accounts directly from search results or select an account to see its page and posts.

Hopefully, Meta will make the function more robust soon, something akin to X’s search feature. The latter platform lets you search accounts and posts using keywords, hashtags, and more. You can also sort search results using chips like Top, Latest, People, Media, and Lists. X offers location-based and follow-based filters as well.
