Dating apps like Tinder, Grindr, Match, and Bumble have significant plans on the horizon. They’re preparing to introduce premium tiers, and some of these subscriptions could cost users as much as $500 per month. Several dating apps have hit a limit in terms of their user base for paid subscriptions. To overcome this challenge and sustain revenue growth, they’re increasing subscription fees.

According to a report by Bloomberg, one successful strategy is offering weekly subscriptions. This approach has encouraged more users to try the paid tiers.

Match Group Inc. provides a prime example of the success of this strategy. Since launching weekly subscriptions in April, there has been a remarkable 73% increase in UK-based Gen Z women opting for paid Tinder plans. Hinge also saw a similar boost.

However,one of the challenges of the weekly subscriptions is the instability. Users may cancel it, after trying it briefly and then cancel, making the revenue stream less predictable.

Many companies are considering introducing even more expensive premium tiers. Match Group is on the verge of unveiling a subscription tier that could cost users a hefty $500 per month in the coming months.

But that’s not the only thing Match is introducing, they are exploring the possibility of a $500-a-month version slated for release in the fall. Bumble Inc., which already offers a weekly subscription, plans to test a premium tier later this year and launch a more affordable option for Gen Z users. Grindr Inc. is also seeing positive results from its new weekly subscription and exploring options for lower-cost plans and a premium tier.

Dating apps premium tier objectives

These premium offerings are designed for individuals seeking a more personalized and curated matchmaking experience. Bumble CEO Whitney Wolfe Herd noted that users are willing to pay a premium for a service that helps them find meaningful connections.

However, Bumble and Grindr are not only eyeing pricier premium tiers. These dating apps premium also plans to introduce new tiers with lower pricing options compared to their existing subscriptions.

Pizza Hut Australia has fallen victim to a cyberattack resulting in unauthorized access and potential compromise of customer data. 

DataBreaches has uncovered alarming details about this breach, with a hacking group known as ShinyHunters claiming responsibility for the attack.

According to the information obtained, ShinyHunters allegedly infiltrated Pizza Hut Australia’s systems approximately 1 to 2 months ago, leveraging Amazon Web Services (AWS) through multiple entry points. 

Shockingly, they assert that they have exfiltrated over 30 million records, including customer orders and the personal information of more than 1 million customers. 

What’s particularly concerning is that ShinyHunters allegedly operated stealthily without detection during the entire intrusion.

As evidence of their claims, ShinyHunters provided DataBreaches with two sample files. 

The first file contained records of customer orders totaling 200,000 entries, each including a wide array of order details, customer information, and payment data. 

The second file was a JSON file encompassing the personal details of 100,000 customers. 

This file included sensitive information like names, email addresses, postal addresses, longitude, mobile phone numbers, passwords, service type (delivery or pickup), and even credit card numbers. 

The credit card data was encrypted, and the passwords were hashed, but other fields were in plaintext.

DataBreaches spot-checked customer names to validate their claims and found matches with individuals in the corresponding geographic areas within the data samples. 

ShinyHunters is demanding a ransom of $300,000.00 to delete the stolen data. It’s worth noting that ShinyHunters has a history of selling or leaking data when victims do not comply with their extortion demands.

Currently, Pizza Hut has not responded to ShinyHunters’ demands, leaving customers concerned about the safety of their personal information. 

While the data breach is a significant security incident, no official notice on Pizza Hut Australia’s website alerting customers to this breach involving their credit card information.

DataBreaches (an organization that provides data and statistical analyses to Protenus for their Breach Barometer reports) has reached out to Pizza Hut Australia’s CEO, CFO, and COO for comments regarding the breach, inquiring whether they were aware of the security breach, if law enforcement or regulators had been informed, and if customers were notified. 

As of the publication of this news, no responses have been received.

Samsung to bring AMD GPU to mid-range Exynos chips

Samsung is reportedly planning to bring AMD graphics to its mid-range Exynos processors. According to tipster Revegnus, aka @Tech_Reve, the Exynos 1430 and Exynos 1480 will both feature AMD’s RDNA-based GPU. These chips will arrive early next year, powering some of the Korean firm’s 2024 Galaxy A models.

Before you get too excited, the tipster has urged everyone to not have “overly high expectations” for the gaming performance of the upcoming AMD-powered mid-range Exynos chips. This is because Samsung will primarily use the RDNA graphics to improve the ISP (Image Signal Processor), i.e. the camera performance, rather than gaming.

Next-gen Galaxy A phones may be more camera-centric

The Korean firm might be looking to make its next-gen Galaxy A phones more camera-centric. We might see higher-resolution cameras on some premium models, like the Galaxy A55. The Exynos 1430 and Exynos 1480 should also deliver more powerful post-processing for better image quality, more akin to flagship models.

Gaming may be taking a backseat, but the inclusion of AMD graphics should bring some improvements over ARM’s Mali GPUs that Samsung’s mid-range Exynos processors have been traditionally using. We aren’t expecting flagship features like ray tracing, but maybe better driver support and some performance boost over older chips.

Nonetheless, it’s nice to see Samsung’s partnership with AMD for RDNA-based mobile graphics coming down to mid-range chips. The duo signed this deal in 2019, but the first Exynos processor to use an AMD GPU came last year. The Exynos 2200’s Xclipse 920 GPU handled the graphics duties on the Galaxy S22 series flagship smartphones. That’s still the only Exynos chip with an AMD-powered GPU.

Meanwhile, in April this year, Samsung signed a multi-year extension of its partnership with AMD for the Radeon graphics technology. Rumors said the companies will work on improving their RDNA-based mobile GPUs (the Xclipse 920 left a lot to be desired). The plan was to eventually bring AMD graphics to the mid-range segment. It appears we will finally see that happen next year.

Galaxy S24’s Exynos 2400 will feature an AMD-powered GPU

Alongside bringing AMD GPUs to mid-range chips, Samsung is also working on a new flagship solution. The company’s next-gen Exynos 2400 flagship, which will power the Galaxy S24 series in some markets, will feature a much-improved Xclipse 940 GPU. It’s said to boast twice as many graphics computing units as the Xclipse 920. The same source recently claimed that the new GPU is still quite power-hungry. It remains to be seen if Samsung manages to fix those issues before the chip enters mass production.

Another potent malware has appeared online aiming at Android users. Identified as “Infamous Chisel,” the malware currently targets Android users from the Ukrainian military. However, while the campaign presently seems specifically directed against a nation, it may evolve into a more widespread malware campaign.

CISA Warns Of New Infamous Chisel Android Malware

The US CISA has warned Android users to stay wary of the newly discovered Infamous Chisel malware through a recent alert.

Referring to a joint malware analysis report from the US agencies (CISA, NSA, and FBI), together with New Zealand’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-NZ), United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC-UK), the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS), and the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), the alert highlighted the narrowly-focused malware, presumably from Russian threat actor group “Sandworm,” aiming at the Ukrainian military.

Regarding the malware, Infamous Chisel operates over the Tor network, establishing a persistent connection to the target devices. During this period, the malware collects device information, such as the list of installed apps, particularly looking for apps specific to the Ukrainian military.

Moreover, it also exhibits network monitoring capabilities and provides SSH access to the threat actors. Besides, it also manages SCP file transfer, steals stored credentials, tracks location, collects files, and exfiltrates communication data.

To manage all these functionalities, Infamous Chisel includes various components that the malware analysis report describes.

Although the malware exhibits serious malicious capabilities, the researchers found it missing out on obfuscation. That means detecting the malware attack is possible with less effort. However, the attackers, according to the report, may have intentionally ignored this aspect since Android devices often lack a host-based detection system.

It currently remains unclear how the malware manages to reach the target devices.

Presently, Infamous Chisel particularly targets the Ukrainian military, indicating its potential use as another weapon for the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict. However, this specificity can expand to include other victims from different regions at any time. Therefore, all Android users must remain careful when interacting with unsolicited links or apps from unknown sources to avoid such threats.

As part of a major contract dispute, Disney has decided to pull the plug and block access to its 25 channels for Charter Spectrum cable users. This abrupt blackout, which unfolded on Thursday evening without any prior notice, left many users frustrated, as it disrupted not only the U.S. Open but also the opening weekend of college football broadcasts.

The crux of the matter

According to Charter’s CEO, Chris Winfrey, the company, aiming to keep costs low for its 14 million consumers, pushed for a revamped deal with Disney, which would grant access to Disney’s ad-supported streaming services, like Disney+ and ESPN+, without extra charges. And although Charter eventually agreed to Disney’s request for increased fees, both companies weren’t able to reach a deal on the streaming access terms.

As a result, Charter Spectrum expressed their disappointment with Disney’s decision, accusing them of trying to compel their customers to pay for expensive programming, even if they have no interest in it. Moreover, the company believes that its proposed model would offer a better choice to customers.

“We offered Disney a fair deal, yet they are demanding an excessive increase. Spectrum is on your side and fighting to keep costs down while protecting and maximizing customer choice. The rising cost of programming is the single greatest factor in higher cable TV prices, and we are fighting hard to hold the line on programming rates imposed on us by companies like Disney,” said Spectrum.

Disney’s say

In response, Disney asserted that Charter declined their offer despite favourable conditions and creative proposals to make Disney’s streaming services accessible to Spectrum customers. Additionally, the company also emphasized its successful partnerships with various pay-TV providers across the country and clarified that ongoing negotiations had been in progress with Charter Communications.

Despite the issue, Disney stated in a press release that they are “ready to return to the negotiation table to restore access to our unrivalled content for their customers as quickly as possible.”

PoC Exploit VMware Aria

VMware Aria Operations for Network was discovered with an Authentication Bypass vulnerability previously, which had a critical severity. VMware has released patches for fixing this vulnerability. However, a Proof-of-concept and the patch file provided by VMware have been briefed.

CVE-2023-34039 was the CVE ID assigned to this vulnerability. According to VMware, the vulnerability exists due to the lack of unique cryptographic key generation that leads to an authentication bypass. After analyzing, it was discovered that this was not an authentication bypass vulnerability. Instead, this is a hardcoded SSH key issue. 

As per reports submitted to Cyber Security News, researchers analyzed the patch files released by VMware as part of the patch. There were multiple patch files, and one of them was a bash script.

The bash script consisted of a function called “refresh_ssh_keys” which is used for overwriting the current SSH keys used by support and Ubuntu users in the VMware instance. The SSH keys were identical for both users, who were a part of the sudoers group with no limitations.

VMware Aria Operations for Network’s implementation contains two machines, Platform and Collector, which can be exploited due to this vulnerability.

In addition to this, VMware Aria Operations did not implement this refresh_ssh_keys function from version 6.0 to 6.10, giving threat actors a wide vector of attack space. All these versions have unique SSH keys collected by the researchers, and an exploit PoC has been released.

As per the security advisory released by VMware, Users of VMware Aria Operations for Networks are recommended to upgrade to the latest version, 6.11, which has been confirmed to be unaffected by this vulnerability.

Take a closer look at the eye-catching HONOR V Purse

HONOR showed off two devices at IFA 2023, the HONOR Magic V2 and the HONOR V Purse. The first one is the company’s latest book-style flagship, which was initially launched in China. The second, however, is a concept smartphone, that is rather interesting. We managed to get some hands-on time with the HONOR V Purse in Berlin. In this article, we’ll talk a bit about it.

Before we get down to it, do note that the software on the phone was not ready, so we did not get a chance to use it. The only thing that worked is one of the AOD styles that the company is using.

Now, the HONOR V Purse is a concept smartphone. This is a foldable phone that essentially turns into a purse. Initially, I thought that the purse strap attaches to the hinge directly, but it doesn’t, there’s a case that has to be attached to the hinge, basically. That’s something you’ll see in the images below.

HONOR presented quite a few styles of straps that can be used here. They range from the ones that contain pearls and feathers, to the ones with chains, and so on. The styles can be changed on the fly, with ease. This was a fashion-forward launch event, by the way, otherwise a product like this would be quite shocking.

This is an outwards-folding smartphone that resembles the Huawei Mate Xs 2

Now that we got that out of the way, the HONOR V Purse is an outwards-folding smartphone, much like the Huawei Mate Xs 2. It actually does resemble that phone to a degree. There is a button on the back that unlocks the phone, at which point you can unfold it.

When folded, part of its foldable display is exposed on the back, when unfolded, the entire display is on the front, of course. This is a completely different approach to book-style foldables.

It is worth noting that the HONOR V Purse is actually the thinnest foldable smartphone out there. It is even thinner than the Magic V2, which is not surprising, as it has only one display, unlike the Magic V2. The difference is not that big, though. Also, this phone is just a concept for now, so the Magic V2 is technically the thinnest foldable still.

The HONOR V Purse has two cameras on the back, and it sits nicely in the hand. As I said, we were not allowed to use it, and that includes unfolding it. I’d assume that the feeling is similar to what we got with the Huawei Mate Xs 2, which is not a bad thing at all. You can check out that review here.

You’ll find quite a few images of this phone in the gallery below. Now, if you’re wondering if it’s coming to market, that’s something we cannot answer, not yet. HONOR did refer to it as a concept smartphone, but considering how many different styles of straps they showed off, and the fact they mentioned they’d invite third-party designers to design AOD displays for this phone… chances are it’s coming.

Its specs & price tag are a mystery at the moment… presuming HONOR will release it at some point

We don’t know absolutely anything about its specifications, nor its price tag, though. That is something HONOR will share with us at a later date, presuming that this phone will hit the market at some point. For now, it’s just a showpiece that managed to grab attention at IFA 2023 in Berlin, and we gave it one of our IFA 2023 awards.

A well-known analyst and source of Apple info, Ming-Chi Kuo, has confirmed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be late to the party. In other words, it won’t become available at the same time as its siblings.

We’ve heard this info quite a few times thus far, and it seems to be coming to fruition. Apple already confirmed that the iPhone 15 series will be announced on September 12. The iPhone 15 Pro Max (or possibly Ultra) will be announced too.

The company’s most powerful model will, however, arrive last. It is said that issues with stacked CIS, panels, and batteries might have been fixed, but that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to get the Pro Max at the same time as its siblings.

The stacked CIS issue has been resolved by increasing production capacity, though around 15% of iPhone 15 and 15 Plus shipments may be affected. The issues with batteries and frames were fixed in the same way.

The ‘Pro’ models will be lighter than their predecessors

Kuo also said that the cancellation of the virtual button design led to some challenging production windows for the titanium frame on the two ‘Pro’ models. He also noted that both variants will be lighter than their predecessors. Their weight already surfaced, quite recently actually.

The display issue was allegedly fixed by “changing the supplier shipment ratio”. If you’re wondering how long will you have to wait to get the iPhone 15 Pro Max, well, we’re still not sure. We presume it won’t be a long delay, though.

On top of everything that was said, Kuo also mentioned the colors that we can expect, yet again. The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will launch in black, blue, green, pink, and yellow color variants. The ‘Pro’ versions will arrive in black, blue, gray, and white colors.
