Let’s admit it, TikTok is slowly taking over the internet. A ton of social media and video-sharing platforms have adopted the vertical scrolling feed popularized by TikTok. This app’s influence has spread to the most popular live-streaming platform on the web. Twitch is testing a new TikTok-style feed called the Discovery Feed, according to The Verge.

As stated, a bunch of social media and video sites have emulated TikTok; however, even other types of platforms have found a way to implement a vertical feed. Music streaming services like Spotify and YouTube Music have made their own vertically scrolling feeds. The latter’s option displays clips of music videos (check out our coverage here).

Twitch is testing a TikTok-inspired discovery feed

It might be a weird thought, but the company could be onto something. When you open Twitch, you’re most likely looking for streamers who are currently streaming. You’re not really looking to see pre-recorded content like clips or VODs.

The Discovery Feed could help place clips in your face so you don’t miss out on them. When you summon it, you’ll see a feed of featured clips. This could keep you on the Twitch platform even when the stream you’re watching ends. This is something that the company wants, as you’re spending more time on the platform.

The feed will show you featured clips from different creators. You’ll be dealing with the algorithm, so you’re liable to see clips from creators who are in line with your tastes. If you mostly watch people playing Fortnite, you’ll most likely get clips from other Fortnite streamers.

Hopefully, Twitch eventually gives you the ability to set your feed to show only clips from people you follow. That could be a great way to catch up on streams that you missed or relive great moments from streams that you saw.

Right now, Twitch is testing this out on a limited audience. Chances are that you won’t see it during the test, but you can still check to see if you’re a part of it. Update the Twitch app and tap on the Browse tab at the bottom.

If you’re eagerly awaiting to get your hands on the upcoming iPhone 15, you’re probably trying to decide what color to get. Well, a bunch of colors are rumored for the iPhone 15, and a designer has just visualized those colors for us to check out.

As you can see, there are six colors to choose from here. The phone will arrive in black, green, red, blue, pink, and yellow colors. Apple will, of course, have fancy names for those color options.

Now, you’ll notice that the iPhone 15, and this is a vanilla model we’re looking at here, has a Dynamic Island. That was not the case with the vanilla iPhone 14. Apple is ditching the notch, as all iPhone 15 units will include a Dynamic Island cutout.

Other than that, the design will be very similar to the iPhone 14. The display size will remain unchanged, and so will the design, for the most part. You’ll still get those flat sides, and rather boxy design that we’re used to at this point.

Apple is rumored to ship higher-quality cables with its iPhones this time around. All iPhone 15 models will, allegedly, ship with a braided cable in the color of the device itself. So cables in all of these colors will also be available.

The entire iPhone 15 series is expected to launch next month. September 12 and 13 are rumored as launch dates, but Apple didn’t confirm it just yet. The devices are expected to go on pre-sale on September 15, and become available to purchase on September 22.

Meta lets more people enjoy end-to-end encryption on Messenger

Meta has been testing end-to-end encryption on Messenger for a few years now, so only a limited number of users had access to this important security feature. The reason it takes Meta so long to roll out end-to-end encryption for all Messenger users is that the transitioning to E2EE is “an incredibly complex and challenging engineering puzzle.”Ever since it started to work on E2EE back in 2019, Meta’s engineers realized that they would need to rewrite almost the entire messaging and calling code base from scratch.

Messenger and Instagram DMs have been initially designed to function via servers. In this regard, Meta’s servers act as the gateway between the message sender and receiver. Unfortunately, with E2EE, Meta couldn’t rely on servers to process and validate messages, which is why it had to redesign the entire system to make it work without Meta’s servers that could read the content of the messages.

Meta also had to design new ways for users to manage their message history, including setting up a PIN. The bottom line is Meta rebuilt more than 100 features in Messenger, which now provides its users with one of the richest chat experiences available.

Although Meta is not yet ready with E2EE integration, it allowed some Messenger users into the testing program. Today, the social media company announced that it has expanded testing for end-to-end encryption on Messenger.

No other details as to who exactly is getting E2EE integration have been provided yet, but we do know that the security features should be available as standard to all users by the end of this year.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra’s screen might get a much higher peak brightness

Phones are meant to be taken with you wherever you go… and that includes outside in the blaring summer sun. This is why sunlight visibility is an important part of the smartphone experience. This is something that Samsung is taking to heart, as the peak brightness of the Galaxy S24 Ultra could be much higher than on the Galaxy S23.

Phone displays, for the longest time, were tough to see in the sunlight. LG offered a solution with the LG G7 by hooking that phone up with a display with a 1,000 nit peak brightness. Since then, companies like Samsung, ASUS, Oppo, and Apple have taken things further with peak brightnesses bright enough to singe your eyes.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra could have a very high peak brightness

This news actually came from two sources that both point to different numbers. However, the numbers are in the same ballpark. According to leaker Itnyang, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra could bring a display with a brightness of 2,200 nits. That’s about a 26% increase over the Galaxy S23’s 1,750 nit brightness.

That’s a pretty significant jump, and it will more than likely make reading in the sunlight a breeze. However, another source points to it being even higher. Leaker, IceUniverse stated that Samsung might push it to 2,500 nits (42% higher than the S23) with the possibility of even going to 2,800 nits (60% higher than the S23)!

But, before you order your sunglasses, don’t expect the phone to get that bright. This phone uses a type of OLED display called M13 internally. This type of display could possibly get up to 2,500 nits, but we’re talking about the physical capabilities of the materials used. That doesn’t mean that Samsung is going to program the phone to reach that brightness.

It’s possible that Samsung could limit the brightness to 2,200 nits. That’s not the eye-watering 2,800 nits, but it’s still more than bright enough to read your tweets while at the beach. It’s 10% brighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s display. It won’t be as bright as the Oppo Find X6’s 2,500 nit brightness; however, once you cross the 1,000 nit brightness line, the numbers don’t really matter.

That shows the power of proper fine-tuning.

An important thing to note is that the data you use to train the bot won’t be used by OpenAI to train the main model. This means that you won’t have to worry about the data you feed it getting out. If you’re tailoring the bot to your company, then you’re more than likely feeding it company secrets.

Android 14 could eliminate sharing screenshots and URLs separately

If you’re sharing a screenshot of a web page, it’s a two-step process that involves you taking the screenshot and then copying the URL. If you need to share web pages often, this could get pretty annoying. However, according to Mishaal Rahman (via Android Authority), Android 14 could eliminate saving the screenshot and URL separately.

The stable version of Android 14 is almost out, and we’re still getting news about new features set to release. With this potential feature, when you take a screenshot, your phone will automatically append the URL when you’re in the sharing menu. According to his Patreon post, this feature uses the same API that Pixel phones and ASUS phones use. Phones from both brands have the ability to do this from the recents menu.

This will, undoubtedly, make sharing screenshots of web pages much easier. For the time being, we’re still in the dark about when this feature is coming out. We don’t know if Google will unveil this feature when Android 14 lands or if it will be added on in a subsequent update. Only time will tell.

Speaking of Android 14, the beta version 5.1 just landed

If you’re running the Android beta 5.0 version, then you shouldn’t expect any changes. This is a .1 update, and it only brings some bug fixes. Other than that, it’s the same software that came with the 5.0 beta release.

Beta 5 was the final scheduled update before Android 14 hits the stable version. So, if you’re on the beta, and you haven’t updated to 5.1, you might want to. The stable version is just around the corner.

If you don’t know how to update your phone, it’s really easy. Just go to your settings and scroll down to the System section. There, go to the Software update section.

If it tells you that your phone is up-to-date, tap on the Check for update button on the bottom right of the screen. Your phone will do a scan for the update. If it finds one, then tap on the Download and install button. Your phone will start updating.

Google gets lumped in with $6B lawsuit against NFL’s Sunday Ticket

Google, as many of you likely know, won the rights to broadcast the NFL Sunday Ticket starting this season, and going through the 2030 season. It’s reported that Google paid about $2 billion per year for these rights. So what did that get them? Well, it got them pulled into a years-long lawsuit against the NFL (and DIRECTV) over Sunday Ticket.

This suit claims that the package is preventing individual teams from getting their own broadcast arrangements. And thus forcing fans and businesses like sports bars to pay for the entire package to catch one out-of-state game. In case you missed it, DIRECTV held onto the broadcast rights for NFL Sunday Ticket in bars and restaurants, which is why they are still part of this lawsuit.

The NFL tried to dismiss this allegation and for the case to be thrown out. That motion was denied, apparently.

 The case is now in class action status

This lawsuit was granted class action status back in February – before Google had actually gotten the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket. The case is now separated into two class action groups. With one being for individuals and the other being for businesses. The trial here is expected to happen in 2024, and if the NFL and DIRECTV lose, it could be on the hook for about $6 billion. Good thing Google is paying the NFL $2 billion per year now.

Google is now part of this case, and the plaintiffs are complaining that Google is only willing over to hand over summary documents. While they want full contracts. So now, Google is being sued to hand over full copies of its contracts with the NFL.

This is a pretty large lawsuit, with over 2.4 million people in the residential class action suit, and 48,000 in the commercial class action suit. And if they win, the NFL and DIRECTV could be forced to pay out to past NFL Sunday Ticket subscribers.

It’s an interesting lawsuit, and it’s something that makes the NFL different from other leagues. Other leagues are able to make their own broadcast deals with different companies and channels, while the NFL kind of holds onto all of that. They have deals with NBC, Prime Video and ESPN for national games, while FOX and CBS broadcast local games on Sundays. It’ll be interesting to see what happens here.

Carderbee Hacking Group – Supply Chain Attack

For a supply chain attack and to plant the Korplug backdoor (aka PlugX) on the systems of the targeted victims, an unknown APT group was found to be using the “Cobra DocGuard.” 

Cobra DocGuard is a legit software package that enables users to manage their Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act documents, and it’s designed by “EsafeNet,” a Chinese company.

Cybersecurity experts at Symantec discovered that threat actors behind this unknown APT group, which is dubbed as “Carderbee” was found to be using the legitimate Microsoft certificate to sign malware.

While in a report shared with Cyber Security News, researchers confirmed that the victims that were targeted by this group during the supply chain attack campaign were mainly from Hong Kong and some from other regions of Asia.

Attack Chain

Earlier, the Symantec Threat Hunter Team discovered a signed Korplug version in April 2023 but at that time couldn’t confirm if it was Budworm’s (aka LuckyMouse, APT27) work.

Multiple APT groups, including the APT41 and Budworm, use the “Korplug” backdoor, but, researchers affirmed that at the moment, only their geographical locations are identified, while the targeted industry sectors remain unknown.

While in this recent campaign, about 100 computers showed malicious activity in affected organizations. However, the Cobra DocGuard was present on 2,000 computers, and this scenario suggests targeted payload delivery.

The infection’s delivery location on computers points to a supply chain attack or malicious Cobra DocGuard setup as the compromise method.

Throughout 2023, multiple malware families emerged via this method, and notably, a Microsoft-signed downloader installed the “Korplug” backdoor from the following location by fetching the ‘update.zip’ file:-

The above-mentioned .zip file is a Zlib archive that decompresses and runs content.dll, acting as a dropper for x64 and x86 drivers based on the system environment.

  • Check running processes
  • Download files 
  • Open firewall ports
  • Act as a keylogger

Moreover, the threat actors behind this campaign are highly skilled, as the complete scenario of this campaign depicted the same. As in this case, to evade detection, the threat actors stealthily used the legitly signed malware.

So, selective payload deployment and targeting completely suggest careful planning and reconnaissance.

Nothing OS 2.0 is coming to Nothing Phone (1) very, very soon

The Nothing Phone (1) is Nothing’s very first smartphone, and it will soon get a major update, as promised. Nothing OS 2.0 will land on the Nothing Phone (1) very, very soon. The company has confirmed that it’s coming next week.

Nothing did not share an exact launch date for this update, though. So… all we can do is wait. Still, we do know it’s coming next week, so that’s great for those of you who still use the device.

What will change, though? Well, Nothing has prepared a new monochrome look. It will be applied to all app icons, for a streamlined look across the board.

On top of that, Nothing OS 2.0 brings interactive folders to the table. You can basically open an app from inside a specific folder without even opening it. You can even change the shapes and sizes of those folders, for great customizability options.

This version of the company’s Android skin throws quite a few changes to the table

You can even move your quick toggles from the notification shade to the lock screen. That can increase your productivity, depending on how you use your smartphone, of course.

Nothing OS 2.0 also allows you to run two instances of the same app, and you can even lock an app if you want. There are a number of additional changes that were issued, but we’ll let you figure that out.

Nothing OS 2.0 comes pre-installed on the Nothing Phone (2), which launched last month. It didn’t take Nothing long to bring it to the Nothing Phone (1), presuming the company comes through next week, of course.

The Nothing Phone (1) launched back in July last year. It’s past a year old at this point, but it’s still a very compelling phone. It is very similar to the Nothing Phone (2) in terms of the overall design.

AT&T expands its 5G Internet Air plan to 16 new cities

Smartphone carriers have been steadily working towards making 5G available to all regions. Now, as part of these efforts, AT&T has announced the expansion of its Internet Air plan, which leverages 5G technology to bring high-speed Wi-Fi directly into homes.

With this expansion, the Internet Air plan will encompass 16 new cities, including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon (Pennsylvania), Pittsburgh, Las Vegas, Phoenix (Prescott), Chicago, Detroit, Flint-Saginaw-Bay City (Michigan), Hartford-New Haven (Connecticut), Minneapolis-St. Paul, Portland (Oregon), Salt Lake City, Seattle-Tacoma, and Tampa-St. Petersburg (Sarasota, Florida).

“We’ve already rolled out AT&T Internet Air to existing copper-based customers with great success. As we begin to scale, we are hyper-focused on selecting locations with enough wireless coverage and capacity to deliver not only a great in-home experience but also maintain a top-notch wireless service for our existing mobile users,” said Erin Scarborough, president of AT&T’s broadband and connectivity initiatives.

How does the Internet Air plan work?

As the name suggests, the Internet Air plan employs 5G infrastructure to provide high-speed Wi-Fi, offering download speeds ranging from 40 to 140Mbps and upload speeds ranging from 5Mbps to 25Mbps. While these speeds pale in comparison to the traditional fibre optic cables, the affordable price of just $55 per month, along with the elimination of overage fees, equipment charges, and binding contracts, has made the plan a viable option.

When it comes to setting up, users receive a combined modem/Wi-Fi router device, accompanied by an intuitive app that assists in installation and subsequent management. This app not only helps users find the best extender placement but also sends notifications for network optimization by relocating the router or extender if necessary. Furthermore, homes requiring extended coverage can add Wi-Fi extenders at an extra cost of $10 per extender, up to a maximum of five.

However, it is important to note that AT&T isn’t the sole contender in the race for 5G-powered home internet. This is because Verizon’s basic 5G home internet plan starts at $50 per month (with autopay) or $60 without, while T-Mobile offers a comparable plan at the same price point.
