Rumors have been back and forth when it comes to the name of Apple’s most powerful iPhone 15 handset. Rumors have been saying both ‘Pro Max’ and ‘Ultra’ will be used. We haven’t really heard anything regarding the ‘Ultra’ name for a while, until now. Apple’s top-end iPhone 15 could get a new name after all, based on new info.

This information comes from Andrew O’Hara, a journalist from Apple Insider. He said that he heard, from multiple sources, that Apple will go with the iPhone 15 Ultra name after all.

This does make sense, as the top-end Apple Watch has the ‘Ultra’ moniker. Many people would also agree that it’s a better name than ‘Pro Max’ either way. So… there you have it, chances are this info is accurate.

That’s not all he shared, however. He also mentioned that the phone will feature a more powerful zoom camera than we thought. The iPhone 15 Ultra is tipped to include a 10x optical camera, not a 5x or 6x one as rumored before.

We still don’t know what sensor Apple plans to use for the periscope telephoto camera

That will be the very first periscope telephoto camera on an iPhone. We still don’t know what sensor will Apple use, however. The Sony IMX903 is rumored for the main camera, but that’s all we know thus far.

The iPhone 15 Ultra is tipped to launch on September 12 or 13, alongside its siblings. The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro are also expected to arrive. They’re rumored to go on pre-order on September 15, and on open sale on September 22.

Having said that, all iPhone 15 models will include a Type-C USB port. That’s a first for iPhones. Also, Apple’s Dynamic Island cutout and functionality will be included on all four models.

The ‘Pro’ and ‘Ultra’ models are also expected to include titanium frames, and thinner bezels. The ‘Ultra’ is the only model that will include a periscope telephoto camera, it seems.

Samsung might launch an FE-series foldable phone in 2024

Samsung might release a low-cost foldable next year. A new rumor says that the company is internally testing the feasibility of an FE-series folding phone with a low entry price. If the plans materialize quickly enough, the first-gen model could arrive in late 2024, following the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Samsung has been making foldable smartphones since 2019. The first-gen Galaxy Fold, which was a book-style foldable, had a price tag of $1,980. In 2020, the company launched a clamshell foldable in the form of the Galaxy Z Flip. It was priced at $1,380. That’s much cheaper than the book-style model, but still quite expensive.

Over the years, Samsung’s foldables have improved in quality while the prices of both the Fold and Flip models have gone down. The latest offerings — Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 — arrived on the market a couple of weeks back with price tags of $1,800 and $1,000, respectively. Despite a price drop of a few hundred dollars, the devices remain premium and not everyone can afford them.

While several other OEMs have entered the foldable scene in recent years, the best options are still quite costly. Samsung seemingly wants to bridge this gap with a Fan Edition (FE) model. Its FE-series devices are known to bring flagship-grade specs at a lower price point by removing some premium extra features. The alleged FE-series Galaxy foldable will probably follow the same philosophy.

Unfortunately, details are scarce at the moment. There’s no telling what this phone will offer in terms of specs and design, or how much it will cost. Perhaps Samsung is still evaluating how to go about this plan, if at all. If the company is serious about a Fan Edition low-cost foldable, we should hear more about it in the coming months. Until then, we advise you to take this information with a pinch of salt.

Samsung has big plans for the foldable technology

While there’s no confirmation that Samsung is working on an FE-series foldable, we do know that the Korean firm has big plans for the foldable technology. After phones, the company is now planning to make foldable tablets. TM Roh, the head of Samsung’s mobile business, recently suggested that foldable Galaxy tablets aren’t too far away.

According to Roh, Samsung is investing “a lot of resources” in foldable tablets and laptops. It’s currently developing the foundational technology for these products. Once the company is assured that “the product is ready to provide meaningful innovation to consumers,” it will introduce them. We will have to wait and see if low-cost foldable smartphones are part of its foldable strategy for the future.

One of Silicon Valley’s largest office tenants, Alphabet Inc.’s Google, is once again attempting to reduce its real estate holdings. Google has listed 182,500 square feet across 4 buildings at the Foothill Research Center in Palo Alto, California for sublease. The brokerage Newmark posted the listings, and CoStar News has reviewed them. This move reflects Google’s ongoing effort to cut expenses by trimming its expansive real estate portfolio.

The buildings available for sublease are located at 4001, 4005, 4009, and 4015 Miranda Ave. Nearly a decade ago, Google initially moved into the office park, and over time, it gradually expanded its presence. As recently as 2020, Google added more than 56,000 square feet through a lease signed with landlord Hudson Pacific Properties. This expansion was part of Google’s strategy leading up to and during the early stages of the pandemic.

Tech giant Google, along with other industry leaders, has been aggressively cutting back on real estate since the start of the year. This marks a significant change from its previous expansion approach driven by high demand for its products and services. However, as revenue growth slowed and economic uncertainties mounted, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, shifted its priorities from expansion to profitability.

Alphabet plans layoffs due to these changes

Alphabet announced plans to lay off 12,000 employees due to these changes, making this the largest workforce reduction in the company’s history. OnePlus’ upcoming devices will include flat sides, and a cover display with really thin bezels. On the back, the device will feature a large camera oreo, which will include three camera sensors.

The phone will feature a wide-angle camera, an ultrawide one, and a periscope telephoto one too. Those could be 50-megapixel, 48-megapixel, and 64-megapixel cameras, respectively. Hasselblad will be a part of the equation too.

A 7.82-inch main display was mentioned in rumors, and a 6.31-inch cover display. A 4,520mAh battery will also be a part of the package, and will support 100W charging, allegedly.

In regards to its cameras, you can expect a 50-megapixel main camera, a 48-megapixel ultrawide unit, and a 64-megapixel periscope telephoto camera. The Find N2 did not offer a periscope telephoto camera at all, so this is quite a boost.

The phone will feature 100W charging, and ship with up to 16GB of RAM

A 4,520mAh battery is tipped to be included, which is not particularly large, though. The phone will support 100W wired charging, though, so you’ll be able to charge it in no time.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is said to fuel the phone, which was to be expected. The Find N2 was fueled by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, and it still performs admirably. Android 13 will likely come pre-installed, along with ColorOS 13.1.

The OPPO Find N3 is also expected to offer up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 flash storage. More than one model will be available, though, of course.

The Find N3 is actually rumored to launch globally this time around, alongside its ‘Flip’ sibling. Nothing has been confirmed just yet, though.

Keyword of 2023: AI, or artificial intelligence.

Everyone had heard of ChatGPT here and there, but most people only saw it as Cleverbot 2.0. I mean, how much more impressive can the thing that powers those funny talking saltshakers from YouTube be?

Well, as it turns out a lot! Especially the part related to generative AI, where the platform can create something new, yet not entirely original. Like, applying the art style of a given artist to make a portrait based on several of your selfies.

And as it turns out, you all liked it so much that companies like Microsoft and Google started putting heavy emphasis on the technology. So much so that we’re expecting AI-fueled features to pop-up on some of the best phones to come out soon.

But there’s a dark side to this too. Because, doesn’t the artist that you based the art style for your AI-generated portrait deserve some credit? What about singers whose styles AI copies for half-original songs that found themselves on YouTube or Spotify?

Well, given that a huge chunk of Google’s I/O event of 2023 was practically dedicated to AI — besides the reveal of the Pixel 7a and the Pixel Fold — is it any wonder that YouTube — which, as a kind reminder, is also owned by the Big G — laid out its plans to combat AI-fueled plagiarism in this blog post?

And before we move on to said plans, kudos to CEO Neal Mohan for acknowledging AI’s application as a creative tool too!

Okay, so what’s the plan to combat bad AI actors? Well, it’s called YouTube’s Music AI Incubator. The name itself isn’t really descriptive of what it should be doing. Truth be told, details such as the included technology or required process have been left out for “some time in the future” entirely.

What we do know is that YouTube plans to partner with huge musicians from all around the world — starting off with Universal Music Group, a giant that is quite opposed to user-generated songs — in order to conduct experiments related to generative AI… To some sort of end related to the aforementioned incubator. Cool?

There is also mention of planned work, which would expand the way that Content ID works on YouTube — this is the thing that gets you striked for using copyrighted music, by the way. Basically, using AI, the system will be able to distinguish between the original artist and their inclusion in user-generated content, ensuring — in theory — proper distribution of monetization.

And if that sounds difficult, it’s only because it is. But look at it this way: if it all works out and you make an AI song with Drake’s voice, this would mean that Drake can get his share, while you can also get something on the side, if the song blows up.

And then there is a short mention about YouTube’s planned defense against fake news, because — as you’ve probably already seen — AI can also make pretty convincing deep fakes of social and political figures.

The plan there? “We’re working on it”, but explained in about three paragraphs. Neat!

It’s always great to see that a huge platform like YouTube, where a lot of artists from all sorts of calibers are making their living, is concerned about the future. That being said, to me, this post felt a bit “undercooked” and I’m certainly looking forward to checking out the specifics of the plan, when it is in motion.

Three powerful cameras will be included

The tipster also shared some camera info. Three cameras are tipped to be included on the phone. A 50-megapixel main camera will utilize a Sony IMX9xx sensor. There’s a chance OnePlus will use the Sony IMX989.

A 50-megapixel ultrawide camera will also be on offer, as will a 64-megapixel 3x periscope telephoto camera. This will become the first OnePlus flagship to offer a periscope telephoto camera, by the way.

That is basically everything the tipster shared thus far. This comes after another tipster shared the OnePlus 12 specs yesterday. The info is pretty much the same, though Digital Chat Station shared more details.

The phone is expected to arrive in late 2023, or in January next year. It will probably land in China first, and then a global launch will follow.

Google started rolling out the Android 14 Beta 5.0 update less than two weeks ago. Well, another one just landed. Android 14 Beta 5.1 update is here, and it’s another bug-fixing update for Pixel devices. The same was the case with the previous one.

Before we get down to it, Google did say that Beta 5.0 is the “last scheduled update” before a stable release. The company doesn’t consider .1 patches to be proper updates, or milestone updates, so those don’t count basically. 5.X updates are the last ones we’ll get.

In any case, this update is marked as UPB5.230623.005 for Pixel phones, and UPB5.230623.005.A1 for the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. Alright, let’s see what’s changed, shall we?

Google has decided to disable the trademark live wallpaper on the Pixel Fold, for performance reasons. We’re talking about the feather-styled live wallpaper. It will be back, though, so don’t worry.

Now, there are three additional entries in the changelog, and they relate to all devices. Google fixed an issue that cause the system to stop detecting a SIM card, if Fixed Dialing Number (FDN) features were enabled.

Several bug fixes were issued in this update

Another fix was issued that took care of an issue that caused connectivity interruptions for devices with carriers using 5G standalone (SA) mode. Some devices also experienced a blank home screen after unlocking the device, which has also been fixed.

That’s basically everything there is to it. This update is coming with the August 2023 security update. The following devices are eligible to get it: Pixel 4a (5G), 5, 5a, 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, Fold, and Tablet.
