Match-3 games have come a long way since Bejeweled, and it’s one of the dominant genres on the mobile market. Heroes & Villains is a new match-3 game that will let you play as your favorite DC, well, heroes and villains. It was a pre-registered title for a bit, and now it’s available to download.

This game’s download is around 840MB on the Play Store, with about 40MB of user data created. It’s free to download, but it does have in-app purchases. The Play Store listing says that it contains ads, but we haven’t encountered any so far.

Heroes & Villains: What is this game?

So, the gameplay is pretty straightforward. It’s a battle Match-3 game, so each time you make a match, you’ll launch an attack on the enemies up above. The enemies occupy the top of the screen while the tiles take up the middle. On the bottom of the screen, you’ll see your character portraits.

Match three or more tiles to send attacks. Matching more than three will spawn special tiles, but this is a classic match-3 mechanic. This will spawn tiles that will take out a whole line of tiles and tiles that will inflict extra damage.

You’ll need to be careful where you match the tiles. There are seven columns of tiles, and enemies will stretch across a certain number of columns. In order to land an attack on an enemy, you’ll need to make sure that the tiles you match occupy one or some of the columns that the enemy occupies.

Each character has a certain color, and this color defines who they’re weak/strong against. There are five colors: Blue, Red, Green, Orange, and Purple. Red characters are strong against Green characters, Green’s strong against Blue, and Blue’s strong against Red. Purple and Orange are both strong against each other.

Matching tiles with the same color as a character will gradually fill that character’s special bar. When it’s full, you’ll tap on that character’s portrait to perform a special attack. The special attack will reflect one of the characters’ powers or weapons from the comics.

As you play, you’ll earn in-game currency that you’ll use to summon characters and upgrade the ones you have. It’s your typical mobile gaming fare with currency you earn, currency you buy, crates, and collectible characters.

Apple Maps was something of a mess for a long time, prompting users to download Google Maps instead. Things are finally getting better though and iPhone owners are beginning to appreciate the changes that Apple has made to its maps app, per a Wall Street Journal report.
Google Maps used to be the default mapping app on the iPhone and iPad but that changed after iOS 6 was announced. Apple Maps had many bugs including misplaced labels for landmarks and businesses and missing roads in cities. The user experience was so bad that Apple CEO Tim Cook had to issue an apology for the frustration it caused.
Apple Maps has improved to the point that many people are sticking with it instead of switching to Google Maps.

Changes such as an attractive design, clear public transit direction, faster routes, and better management of the unpredictability of subway outages than Google Maps is making people like Jason Rabinowitz who switched to Android to use Google Maps more easily come back to Apple’s ecosystem.

Jane Natoli, who considers herself a Google Maps power user, says she has started using Apple Maps more after her iPhone prompted her to use the app in an airport. The app was able able to detect that she was at the airport and recommended shops and restaurants in her terminal. Natoli also liked that it had clearer information than Google Maps. She also thinks that it’s easier to read Apple’s find directions when compared to Google Maps.

“It made me kind of revisit and rethink some of my prior assumptions about it. Whatever initial reputational hurdles that Apple Maps faced, I think they’ve jumped over those.” – Jane Natoli

Georgia Tech graduate Angelica Nguyen says that roads are easier to look at on Apple Maps and the view is not cluttered by points of interest.

Even though the iPhone comes preloaded with Apple Maps, most users have downloaded Google Maps as an alternative, according to Canalys. But Apple Maps is more deeply integrated into iOS and services that need direction use Apple Maps.People generally like to use default options, according to user-experience consultant Peter Ramsey. So now that Apple Maps has improved, people have no reason to download Google Maps.

Google Maps is still considered the better option by some when they are driving. And Apple still has a lot of work to do. Costume-design student Laura Pladziewicz says that Apple Maps misguided her when she was in Boston. Law student Noah Abdelaziz said the app suggested a route that lengthened his commute.

As usual, ahead of Unpacked, the head of Samsung’s MX Business, TM Roh, has penned a new blog post hyping up the event. And talking about what to expect at Unpacked in just a week’s time. As a reminder, Unpacked is taking place on July 26, at 7AM ET/4AM PT. This is because it is live from Seoul, Korea this time around.

Roh starts out by talking about how he expanded his responsibilities as head of Samsung’s MX Business and now is the lead of the Corporate Design Center. Roh has spent his career as an engineer and that has taught hime that the most sublime designs are intertwined with technological innovations. That allows him to delve deeper into how the synergy of design, engineering and R&D can yield transformative experiences.

Samsung has three design identities that it uses to create its products. That’s Essential, Innovative and Harmonious.

“Essential design prioritizes clarity of purpose and ease of daily use. Innovative design emphasizes originality, reflecting purpose in a new and distinct ways. Harmonious design ensures all elements work together for a holistic purpose, aligning with societal, environmental and ethical values.”

Roh confirms that new foldables are thinner and lighter

Roh continues on in his blog post, noting that a difference of a millimeter in a device’s thickness may sound small, but it can be a big change. When it comes to a foldable, every millimeter and gram matters. And with that note, Roh mentions that Samsung has innovated to make the latest foldables slimmer and lighter than the previous generations.

He also mentions that the enhanced multi-tasking experience like a PC will also raise the bar for productivity. Allowing you to work, collaborate and game on-the-go.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and Wearables were also designed in the same spirit, says Roh. “They work with each other harmoniously in an ecosystem that opens up a powerful connected experience, serving as a seamless extension of your needs, priorities and unique personality.

Google launched Bard, its AI chatbot, not too long ago, and it’s proven to be a formidable bot. While this is true, Google announced that Bard was going to eventually incorporate extensions to make it more useful. That day will arrive soon, and here’s a look at what to expect (thanks to 9To5Google).

Google Bard has come a long way since it first launched. First, it was merely a “Google-ified” version of ChatGPT with a few drawbacks. Now, it’s much more of a useful tool. It can integrate with services like Google Docs and Gmail. Also, when you Google something, you’ll see AI-generated answers to your search above the search results. There’s a lot that it can do, and you can read here to check it out.

Google Bard is getting extensions

Bard is great on its own, but everything’s better when we reach out. Google announced some new extensions during Google I/O this year, and they’re going to land soon.

Bard will eventually integrate with Adobe Firefly. This is the company’s suite of generative AI models. With this integration, you will be able to use the text-to-image capabilities right from Bard. You’ll also be able to edit those images using Adobe Express.

Next, if you want to turn to Bard to track down plane tickets or check hotel prices, you’ll be able to soon. It will be able to tap into different services and pull information about products and services that constantly change.

Next, and this should come as no surprise. This would have put the nail in ChatGPT’s coffin if the latter wasn’t so popular. Google Bard will be able to integrate with more of Google’s first-party services. We’re talking about integrating seamlessly with popular services like Gmail, Drive, Maps, Docs, and more. We can also expect tight integration with Google Workspace to boost productivity.

There are at least nine extensions down the pipeline

9To5Google’s Dylan Roussel was able to enable an early preview of the extensions that are set to come. He was able to find the extensions menu that will let people enable and disable them. These extensions are Google Flights, Google Hotels, Google Maps, Instacart, Kayak, OpenTable, Redfin, YouTube, and Zillow.

We don’t know exactly when Google is going to bring these extensions to the public, but it shouldn’t be too long. If you’re part of the Google Bard Labs program, you’ll want to keep your eye open for these extensions.

A new campaign leveraging compromised WordPress sites emerges with another fake browser update.

Over 5 years ago, we began tracking a new campaign that we called FakeUpdates (also known as SocGholish) that used compromised websites to trick users into running a fake browser update. Instead, victims would end up infecting their computers with the NetSupport RAT, allowing threat actors to gain remote access and deliver additional payloads. As we have seen over the years, SocGholish is an established player that has managed to compromise countless victims and deliver ransomware after facilitating the installation of tools like Cobalt Strike or Mimikatz.

Now, there is a potential new competitor in the “fake updates” landscape that looks strangely familiar. The new campaign, which we call FakeSG, also relies on hacked WordPress websites to display a custom landing page mimicking the victim’s browser. The threat actors are distributing NetSupport RAT either as a zipped download or via an Internet shortcut. While FakeSG appears to be a newcomer, it uses different layers of obfuscation and delivery techniques that make it a threat to take seriously and which could rival potentially rival with SocGholish.  

Campaign similarities

We first heard of this new campaign thanks to a Mastodon post by Randy McEoin. The tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) are very similar to those of SocGholish and it would be easy to think the two are related. In fact, this chain also leads to NetSupport RAT. However, the template source code is quite different and the payload delivery uses different infrastructure. As a result, we decided to call this variant FakeSG.

FakeSG has different browser templates depending on which browser the victim is running. The themed “updates” look very professional and are more up to date than its SocGholish counterpart.

Compromised websites (WordPress appears to be the top target) are injected with a code snippet that replaces the current webpage with the aforementioned fake updates templates. The source code is loaded from one of several domains impersonating Google (google-analytiks[.]com) or Adobe (updateadobeflash[.]website):

That code contains all the web elements (images, fonts, text) needed to render the fake browser update page. We should note that SocGholish used to retrieve media files from separate web requests until more recently when it started using self-contained Base64 encoded images.

Installation flow

There are different installation flows for this campaign, but we will focus on the one that uses a URL shortcut. The decoy installer (Install%20Updater%20(V104.25.151)-stable.url) is an Internet shortcut downloaded from another compromised WordPress site.

The NetSupport RAT files are hosted on the same compromised WordPress site used earlier to download the Internet shortcut. The RAT’s main binary is launched from “C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming\BranScale\client32.exe“.

Following a successful infection, callbacks are made to the RAT’s command and control server at 94.158.247[.]27.

Fake browser updates are a very common decoy used by malware authors. In addition to SocGholish, the Domen toolkit was a well-built framework that emerged in 2019 while another campaign known as sczriptzzbn dropped SolarMarker leading to the NetSupport RAT in both cases. Initial access brokers use tools like NetSupport RAT to gather information and perform additional actions on victims of interest. Stolen credentials can be resold to other threat actors tied to ransomware gangs.

It is interesting to see another contender in this relatively small space. While there is a very large number of vulnerable websites, we already see some that have been injected with multiple different malicious code. From a visitor’s point of view, this means there could be more than one redirect but the “winner” will be the one who is able to execute their malicious JavaScript code first.

We will continue to monitor these campaigns and in particular SocGholish to see if the web delivery landscape changes. Malwarebytes customers are protected as we detect the infrastructure and final payload used in these attacks.

A couple of mid-range Samsung smartphones are receiving the July 2023 Android security patch. The company has released the latest security update for the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A52s. The update is rolling out widely for both models, including the 4G and 5G versions of the former.

The July SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy A52 4G comes with the firmware build number A525FXXS6DWG1 in Europe, Asia, and Australia. The rollout has yet to reach Africa and Latin America. It should be the same build number in Africa, but the latter market may get a slightly different one because of the phone’s model number in the region (SM-A525M).

Regardless of the firmware version, the changelog should remain the same. And there isn’t much to talk about that. Samsung confirms that the Galaxy A52 is only getting the latest security fixes and nothing else. It’s the same story for the Galaxy A52 5G as well. Users are getting the update with build numbers A526BXXS4EWG1 (Europe and Latin America) and A526USQSAEWG1 (US carrier-locked units).

Samsung will soon expand the rollout to cover the remaining Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A52 5G units with the July SMR, including the factory-unlocked variants of the latter in the US. Meanwhile, the Galaxy A52s 5G is picking up the latest security update in Europe. The new build number for this phone is A528BXXS4EWG1. The Korean firm didn’t release the device in the US.

If you’re using either of these mid-range Samsung smartphones, the July security patch should be available to you anytime now. Watch out for a notification prompting you to download the OTA (over the air) update in the coming days if you haven’t already received it. Tap on the notification to proceed. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app. Go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install.

These Galaxy devices are getting 90 security fixes with the July update

The July 2023 SMR for Galaxy devices is a pretty big one. Samsung is pushing as many as 90 vulnerability patches to its Android-powered phones and tablets this month. These include 38 Galaxy-specific patches and over 50 Android OS fixes, at least three of which are critical ones. The Korean firm will update more eligible Galaxy devices to the July SMR in the coming days. We will keep you posted with those releases as and when they come.

After Chinese hackers could get access to Microsoft email accounts, the tech giant is still investigating the case to identify holes in its systems. Sources claim hackers had access to the company’s servers for almost a month before getting caught and pushed out.

Last week, Microsoft revealed that some bad actors from China could gain access to over two dozen of their email accounts. The impacted accounts reportedly belonged to some high-profile organizations, including government agencies.

Microsoft’s further investigations revealed that the hacking campaign, dubbed “Storm-0558”, started mid-May this year. And targeted the email accounts of 25 organizations. The company later explained hackers took access to the accounts through Outlook Web Access in Exchange Online (OWA) and Outlook.com by forging authentication tokens to access user email.

Chinese hackers penetrated Microsoft servers and gained access to the US government emails

Microsoft now says the method hackers used to gain server access is still “a matter of ongoing investigation.” According to the company’s explanations, an issue with the Microsoft account consumer signing key (MSA) allowed hackers to compromise the email accounts. The issue has been corrected.

Of course, Microsoft has yet to remain tight-lipped about the scope of damage and the data being stolen. The company added they had contacted the targeted customers to provide them with a proper response. “If you have not been contacted, our investigations indicate that you have not been impacted,” the company said.

Microsoft says nothing to be done by users, and they are taking care of the case to identify the roots. However, some compromised email accounts reportedly belonged to the US government, meaning some highly confidential government information might be taken by Chinese hackers.

Still, there is no clue to confirm Storm-0558’s relationship with the Chinese government. By the way, prior experiences show that most Chinese hacking groups work under government supervision. In recent months, the tensions between the United States and China have reached their peak. Such espionage actions by the Chinese government could add fuel to the fire of tensions between countries.
