Laptops are coming with fewer and fewer ports. Apple really started the trend quite some time ago, with launching the MacBook with a single USB-C/Thunderbolt port. Today, Apple has brought back some ports, but only on the “Pro” models that start at $1,999. Other laptop makers have also jumped on this trend, including Dell with its latest XPS products.

The good news is, that you can easily get a USB-C hub, or as many more people call it, a dongle, to bring back some of these ports. However, when you search on Amazon for a USB-C hub, you’re bombarded with so many options. So we are here to help you find the best USB-C dongle for your needs.

Best USB-C Hubs and Dongles

These dongles range from just adding a couple of USB-A ports, to adding just about every port imagineable. And they also range in prices, all the way up to $100.

Google Home Adds Support for Light Groups in Favorites

0
[ad_1]

Google Home has taken some of the feedback from its Public Preview, and rolled out a new feature to the Public Preview (for now). Which will allow users to add groups to favorites, instead of just individual lights. This will make it easier to turn on or off lights in a room, or on an entire floor, with less taps.

The update is now rolling out to those in the Public Preview, and Google’s Anish Kattukaran says that this was one of “the most heavily requested” features.

It’s a very overdue feature for Google Home, and one that should have been added a long time ago. After all, Apple’s Homekit allows users to do this.

If you’re in the Public Preview for Google Home, you should see this update very soon. It’s not quite available for everyone just yet, but that should change over the coming days.

Google Home’s big redesign is still in Public Preview

After announcing it last year, Google Home’s big redesign is still limited to the public preview. Which you can join by going to the Settings in the Google Home app. It could take a bit before you get switched over to the Public Preview, but if you do want to try this out, you can do so by joining the public preview.

With this redesign, Google is making it easier to toggle different things in your home, jump into favorites, and even switch homes that you might have in your Google Home app. It’s a pretty big redesign, and one that we hope rolls out to everyone sooner rather than later.

The new feature announced this week, where you can add groups to favorites, you’ll now see them among individual things. So you could see a group of living room lights on one tile and then an individual ceiling light on another one.

Google Pay & Apple Pay are set to get huge upgrades

0
[ad_1]

NFC, the underlying technology for Google Pay, Samsung Pay and Apple Pay (among other mobile payment solutions), is set for a pretty large upgrade. As the NFC Forum, has revealed its roadmap for NFC technology, which will extend into 2028.

Some of the new features coming to NFC include increased power for NFC wireless charging, and increased range. Below, you’ll see the major updates coming to NFC over the next five years.

  1. Increased Power for NFC Wireless Charging. The current NFC Wireless Charging specification offers up to 1 watt of power and plans are to increase these capabilities up to 3 watts. This change will bring wireless power and charging to new and smaller form factors, disrupting industrial design while defining new markets.
  2. Increased Range. Today, NFC connections are limited to a range of 5mm, but the NFC Forum is in the process of examining ranges that are four to six times the current operating distance. Even a modest increase in range would make contactless transactions and actions faster and easier. It would also improve usability by decreasing the precision needed for antenna alignment.
  3. Multiple Purpose Tap. This feature will further improve the contactless user experience by supporting several actions with a single tap. The use cases driving this work include point-to-point receipt delivery, loyalty identification, and total-journey ticketing.
  4. Modernizing Device-to-Device Communication. Designed to empower NFC-enabled smartphones to have Point-of-Sale functionality (SoftPOS), allowing businesses or individuals to receive payments anywhere.
  5. Expanding NFC’s Ability to Share Data Formats Needed for Sustainability. Enabling NFC to share data on its composition and ways a product can be recycled, helping to meet evolving consumer demands, and regulatory requirements, as well as contributing to a healthy circulatory economy.

It’ll be a while before we see changes

Because this is a roadmap, through 2028, it’s going to be a few years before we really see any changes with NFC. It’ll likely be at least 2025 before we see any big changes on the user-end.

However, the NFC Forum has stated that the work needed for these improvements is already under development, and it could take two to five years before it is launched. It’s also going to require Apple, Google and other smartphone makers to include newer NFC chips into their smartphones to make these new features available. It’s unclear when they will be forced to use new NFC chips, however.

Amazon Sued For Tricking Users to Get Prime Subscriptions

0
[ad_1]
Sued Prime Subscriptions

In the most extreme action taken against the firm by the agency’s chair, Lina Khan, the Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against Amazon on Wednesday, accusing it of illegally pressuring customers to subscribe to its Prime membership and making it difficult for them to quit.

The FTC claimed in its lawsuit that Amazon had “duped millions of consumers” into signing up for Prime by employing “manipulative, coercive, or deceptive” website design techniques known as “dark patterns.”

Additionally, Amazon “knowingly complicated” the cancellation process with burdensome steps when customers wished to cancel.

Lengthy Procedure To Cancel Their Prime Membership

Over 200 million individuals worldwide are Prime subscribers. The subscription service costs $139 a year or $14.99 a month in the US and £95 a year in the UK.

It includes shipping benefits, access to streaming films, and other advantages.

Because “those changes would also negatively affect Amazon’s bottom line,” the agency claimed in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Seattle, the company tried to make it impossible for consumers to opt out of auto-enrolment.

It also claimed that Amazon forced consumers who wanted to cancel through a time-consuming “four-page, six-click, fifteen option” procedure, which the FTC dubbed “Iliad” about the Greek classic about the “long, arduous Trojan War.”

The FTC claimed that although Amazon changed the cancellation procedure soon before the case was filed, the company’s actions violated consumer protection laws.

“Amazon tricked and trapped people into recurring subscriptions without their consent, not only frustrating users but also costing them significant money,” FTC reports.

Amazon was aware that it was signing up customers for Prime without getting their permission and that it was challenging for them to understand the complex canceling process.

The Company neglected to take any significant action to rectify the problems and claimed the lawsuit until they were well aware of the FTC’s inquiry.

The FTC requests a court order requiring Amazon to alter its practices and specific monetary penalties.

Response from Amazon to the Issue

Amazon said that when the case was unexpectedly filed, it had been resolving the problems with the agency.

“The truth is that customers love Prime, and by design, we make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up for or cancel their Prime membership,” the company said.

Amazon and the F.T.C. recently resolved legal disputes. To resolve commission allegations that its Alexa home assistant devices had improperly gathered children’s data, the corporation agreed to pay $25 million last month.

The business also reached a privacy settlement with the F.T.C. involving its Ring home security division.

The Pixel Tablet weather experience is coming to more devices

0
[ad_1]

Google’s Pixel Tablet has its own unique weather experience from other Android devices. While the weather app isn’t drastically different, there are some exclusive little perks you get.

This includes a Material You redesign that updates the visuals. But it also introduces a new Google Nowcast feature. These are available on both the Pixel Tablet and the Pixel Fold. And according to 9To5Google, they’re also changes that will be brought to other devices at some point in the future.

Google doesn’t really mention when, though. So if you want to experience the new design and Google Nowcast for yourself, you’ll need a Pixel Tablet or a Pixel Fold. Of course, that’s an expensive investment just to get some new weather features. So at the very least, you might want to know what Google Nowcast does. Worth noting is that while Nowcast in the Google Weather app only on the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold for now, you can access the information elsewhere.

If you search for weather on mobile, the data can pop up there. It also surfaces when you search for weather on the web. Data through this method is only available in the US though and only in English. Here’s what the feature brings to the party.

Google Nowcast makes the Pixel Tablet weather experience more accurate

Basically, you get more accurate weather details about rain, hail, and snow over a 12-hour period. The data used to surface the weather results using Nowcast is also refreshed a few times an hour. So not only are the weather predictions for these conditions more accurate, they’re also fairly up to date.

Google pulls this data from multiple sources, including Multi-Radar/Multi-Sensor Systems and High-Resolution Rapid Refresh systems from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Nowcast info only pops up if there’s rain, hail, or snow that’s being detected using the data and within that 12-hour forecast. The app also still uses weather.com data for forecasts that are longer than 12 hours.

YouTube TV Subscribers to Lose Access to Mets and Jets Games

0
[ad_1]

YouTube TV is losing SNY, the regional sports network for the New York Mets and New York Jets, as of July 1. This means that YouTube TV subscribers will no longer be able to watch Mets and Jets games on the service.

The loss of SNY is a major blow for YouTube TV, as it is one of the most popular regional sports networks in the country. SNY broadcasts Mets and Jets games, as well as games from other New York teams, such as the Brooklyn Nets and New York Islanders.

YouTube TV subscribers who want to continue watching Mets and Jets games will need to switch to a different streaming service that carries SNY. Some of the other streaming services that carry SNY include Hulu + Live TV, fuboTV, and Sling TV.

Par the course for YouTube TV lately

The loss of SNY is the latest in a series of setbacks for YouTube TV. In recent months, YouTube TV has also lost channels such as Bally Sports West and Bally Sports Midwest. These losses have led to some subscribers canceling their YouTube TV subscriptions. Because many signed up for the sports, and the ability to DVR every sport, but now that’s not possible.

It is unclear why YouTube TV is losing SNY. Some have speculated that it is due to a dispute over carriage fees. Others have speculated that it is due to the fact that YouTube TV is not available on certain streaming devices, such as the Amazon Fire TV Stick.

Whatever the reason, the loss of SNY is a major blow for YouTube TV. It is a reminder that even the most popular streaming services are not immune to losing channels. And it’s just the latest blow to YouTube TV’s sports offerings. After having lost Fox Sports RSNs (later renamed to Bally Sports), and a few AT&T SportsNet channels, and now SNY.

New JavaScript-based Dropper Delivers Malware

0
[ad_1]

The latest research unveiled the JavaScript-based droppers, which deliver Bumblebee and IcedID malware instead of PowerShell-based droppers.

These two malware types are significantly related to ransomware attacks.

Bumblebee is a modular loader, distributed primarily through phishing, used to deliver payloads commonly associated with ransomware deployments.

IcedID is a modular banking trojan that targets user financial information and can act as a dropper for other malware. It uses a man-in-the-browser attack to steal financial information, including login credentials for online banking sessions.

The significant change in Bumblebee and IcedId from a PowerShell-based loader to a javascript-based loader and from a banking trojan to a malware loader shows how the threat actors establish their TTPs to evade detection.

PindOS JavaScript Technical Analysis

According to Deep Instinct’s Threat Research Lab report, the dropper contains comments in Russian. It employs the unique user-agent string “PindOS”, which may be a reference to current (and past) anti-American sentiment in Russia.

The dropper consists of a single function, “exec,” which gets four parameters.

  • “UserAgent”: The user-agent string to be used when downloading Bumblebee’s.DLL
  • “URL1”: First address to download from
  • “URL2”: Second address to download from
  • “RunDLL”: Payload DLL-exported function to call

When executed, the dropper will attempt to download the payload initially from URL1 and execute it by calling on the specified export directly via rundll32.exe.

If this fails, the dropper will attempt to download the payload from URL2 and execute it using a combination of PowerShell and rundll32.exe.

The downloaded payload is saved to %appdata%/Microsoft/Templates/<6-char-random-number>.dat

When comparing the old Bumblebee DLL with the new variant, both have the same main function, “set path”.

Additionally, it includes “legitimate-looking” strings taken from the FFmpeg open-source project’s “error.c” file and a few other files from the same project for distraction purposes.

The new variant has four main export functions, unlike the older variant, which had two.

The retrieved payloads are generated pseudo-randomly “on demand,” which results in a new sample hash each time a payload is fetched to reduce the risk of detection.

As Bumblebee and IcedID are known to deliver ransomware, we recommend that security teams take note of these IOCs—updated IOCs from Deep Instinct’s GitHub page.

YouTube is testing multiple thumbnails for content creators

0
[ad_1]

Google-owned YouTube is testing a new feature for content creators that lets them upload and select from multiple thumbnails to add to videos, Android Police reports. The change is intended to allow content creators to figure out which thumbnails work best for their videos.

More specifically which thumbnails engage the viewer more by getting them to click. YouTube is calling this new feature Test & Compare. And has given a breakdown of how it works in a video on the company’s Creator Insider channel.

Creators upload three thumbnails with a video, then after a certain period of time they can choose a “winning thumbnail” to use as the permanent one. Inside of YouTube Studio creators can see which out of the three performed the best. This is based on the highest percentage of watch time. Creators will then be able to choose the winner. They can also choose to do a new test if they feel it’s needed. The feature is already out in the wild. As YouTube confirms it’s been testing it with a small number of creators over the past few months.

YouTube plans to roll out its thumbnails testing to more creators soon

The testing pools is small now, but it won’t be that way for much longer. YouTube says that in the coming months, a few thousand creators will get access to a beta version of this feature.

There’s no timeline here, so “the coming months” is a pretty broad window. But since it’s a beta YouTube is more than likely handpicking creators to add to the testing. So when does everyone get access? YouTube says it’s looking to roll this out more broadly sometime next year. Which means it won’t be available to a much wider audience for quite some time. YouTube does acknowledge though that this is been a top-requested feature so it wanted to let creators know that it’s being worked on.
