Apple just unveiled its wildly expensive, yet still intriguing Vision Pro augmented reality (and virtual reality) headset this morning, but you might notice that the physical controls were missing.

That’s because the Vision Pro doesn’t come with what you would expect for a traditional controller or set of controllers. Now, the headset isn’t supposed to release until early next year, and Apple doesn’t appear to have let anyone have hands-on use time with it. So you won’t be seeing anyone actually interacting with the interface for quite some time. However, Apple CEO Tim Cook does explain how you’ll control the headset and engage with content.

You’ll use “the most natural and intuitive tools” you have at your disposal. Your hands, eyes, and voice.

Apple’s Vision Pro controls will rely on the user’s own hands

Your hands won’t be the only tool for navigation. But it wouldn’t be surprising if this is what feels most natural to the majority of people who may pick one of these up.

You can flick your wrist to scroll through content and tapping your fingers will allow to select something. Say you’re scrolling through Apple TV+ for something to watch. Like the season 3 finale of Ted Lasso for instance. With Vision Pro, you can scroll through Apple TV+ content either by looking at it or by flicking your wrist in a similar way you might scroll through your feeds on your smartphone or tablet.

Then once you find what you want to watch, you make sure it’s highlighted and then tap your fingers together to select it and hit play. Of course not everyone is going to want to interact with the user interface this way. And that’s fine as you’ll be able to use your voice to dictate navigation too.

Apple doesn’t give too much information on the specifics. But it does show off the technique during the event. Now granted, this probably isn’t going to be the way you play those more than 100 Apple Arcade games coming to the headset at launch. But there will doubt be some developers who take advantage of this new input system eventually.

Atomic Wallet Hit by $35M Theft in Recent Crypto Breach

Reports from affected users indicate that some lost their crypto assets after a recent software update, while others suffered losses despite not having updated to the latest version.

In a recent incident that has sent shockwaves through the crypto community, Atomic Wallet has fallen victim to a substantial theft of various tokens amounting to nearly $35 million. 

The attack, which began on June 2nd 2023, affected less than 1% of Atomic Wallet’s monthly active users, according to the company’s Twitter statement on Monday. The firm, currently conducting investigations, has requested victims to submit relevant information via a Google Docs form to aid in the inquiry.

Reports from affected users indicate that some lost their crypto assets after a recent software update, while others suffered losses despite not having updated to the latest version.

The stolen tokens include popular cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), tether (USDT), dogecoin (DOGE), Litecoin (LTC), BNB coin (BNB), and polygon (MATIC). 

ZachXBT, an independent investigator known for tracking stolen crypto funds, revealed that the largest victim had lost a staggering $7.95 million in Tether (USDT). Based on their findings, ZachXBT expressed concern that the total amount stolen could potentially surpass $50 million. These revelations have left the Atomic Wallet user base on edge, with many fearing for the security of their own assets. 

Atomic Wallet, a noncustodial-decentralized wallet, emphasizes in its Terms of Service that users bear sole responsibility for the assets stored in the application. The terms explicitly state that Atomic Wallet will not be liable for damages exceeding $50, a clause that may complicate matters for affected users seeking restitution.

The investigation into the security breach remains ongoing, with Atomic Wallet collaborating with leading security companies to identify possible attack vectors. The support team has reached out to major exchanges and blockchain analytics firms in an attempt to trace and block the stolen funds. However, the company has been criticized for the limited information shared with users, leaving many in a state of uncertainty and frustration.

On the other hand, it appears that ZachXBT decided to take matters into their own hands to aid the breach victims. On Twitter he wrote:

“A huge shoutout goes to @buffalu__  @brian_smith_0 for helping us successfully rescue $1m from the Atomic Wallet hacker for one of the victims.”

While their efforts are commendable, the responsibility for timely recovery of the funds ultimately falls on Atomic Wallet. 

It should be noted that last week Jimbos Protocol experienced a loss of $7.5 million after hackers exploited a vulnerability resulting from the lack of slippage control on liquidity conversions. Attacks such as these highlight the vulnerabilities which continue to persist in the crypto ecosystem.

You can play 100 Apple Arcade games on Vision Pro at launch

Apple’s Vision Pro headset will have more than 100 games for you to play at launch, the company says. Meaning if you’re buying the headset for gaming more than anything else, it’ll afford you a decent library of titles to choose from straight out of the box.

Vision Pro of course isn’t just for games. It’ll let you browse the web, use apps, watch TV and movies and more. But games will seemingly be a big part of it. So much so that Apple appears to have set up some big titles for the headset’s release.

With the launch of Vision Pro users will be able to play games on a screen that feels 100 feet wide and uses a spatial audio system for an even more immersive experience. The headset even supports various controllers for connectivity including the PS5’s DualSense controller. Which you can see being used in the unveiling segment of the WWDC 2023 livestream from earlier this morning. Now these are more than likely not connected directly to the headset itself. And are instead probably connected to the Apple device that the headset is plugged into.

At launch Vision Pro will feature games like NBA 2K23

Apple doesn’t mention a whole lot about all of the available launch titles. But it does mention at least one big entry. NBA 2K23.

Users may even be able to play games like Death Stranding Director’s Cut. During a short period of the event, Apple announced some new gaming-related features for MacOS Sonoma, including a new ‘Gaming Mode.’ Not long after Hideo Kojima was brought on stage to announce that Death Stranding Director’s Cut was coming to Mac.

So potentially, if the Vision Pro is connected to your new Mac running this game, you could be playing it on a large AR display. The headset isn’t launching until early next year though so it’ll be a while before you can realize those dreams. Apple should announce more of the 100 launch titles by then too.

As previously rumored, as part of iOS 17’s set of new features that were announced today during today’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple has introduced a new app geared towards journaling. The app is aptly named “Journal” and it is being touted as the “new way to appreciate life’s moments.”
The Journal app for iPhone will use on-device machine learning throughout the day and provide suggestions and ideas to write about. The personalized suggestions will come from recent activity in your contacts, location, music, photos, podcasts, and workout apps, and provide scheduled notifications to remind you when it’s time to write.
Research suggests that journaling can be very beneficial on our mental health, with recent studies suggesting that writing down our experiences can help greatly reduce anxiety and even the amount of sick days we take off work. Additionally expressive writing and gratitude journaling has been known to promote self-acceptance and increase cognitive processing.
Apple is putting more work into releasing health-focused features, particularly with the introduction of a Health app on iPad, so it makes sense that a feature like this would be added as well. My only hope is that this app eventually makes it to MacOS as well without having it necessarily linked to an iPhone.iPhone users will have the ability to lock the app, which will use end-to-end encryption. Because of this Apple states that the app was built to protect the user’s privacy, thus no one except for the user will be able to access their journal entries.

So far, iPhone users have only been able to journal using third party apps, such as Day One, or by using the Notes app. However, because that functionality will now be available natively, we will have to wait and see how that will affect journaling apps currently on the app store.

Apple will also be providing a Journaling Suggestions API so that developers can take advantage of these suggestions within their own apps. Journal will be available on iOS 17 once it rolls out in the fall.

The maxxed out Apple Mac Pro costs just $12,199

After Apple releases new Macs, one of the fun things to do is, going to the Apple Store and seeing what the most is you can spend on the new Mac. And well, the new Mac Pro was announced today, so this should be a fun one.

The new Mac Pro, maxxed out costs just $12,199. That is significantly less than the previous Intel-based model, which would max out at $52,000. Which is pretty insane. So what does this maxxed out version get you? That’s the M2 Ultra with a 24-core CPU, 76-core GPU and 32-core Neural Engine. That also comes with 192GB of unified memory, 8TB of SSD storage, and the wheels. Remember, the wheels do still cost $400.

Compared to the Intel Mac Pro, this has a whole lot less options. And that’s because there’s really only one option for the processor. Even though there are two listed, it’s the same chipset, just binned differently. Also keep in mind that the RAM is unified on the processor, so again, only three options here. And the only other option is for storage.

Most of you don’t need a Mac Pro

Obviously, over $12,000 for a new desktop computer – especially one that doesn’t come with a monitor – is a lot. However, this is a “Pro” computer, and it’s really meant for video editors and audio engineers. And no, that doesn’t mean YouTubers. This means video editors for Hollywood films. For YouTubers, this is a whole lot more power than you really need. You’d be better off with the M2 Pro Mac Mini, which is only about $1,299.

So yeah, keep that in mind. Most of you likely won’t be buying the Mac Pro, and don’t need it either. However, this does show that Apple using its own chipsets is a whole lot cheaper than using Intel. Not to mention a whole lot more powerful.

Apple’s official entry into AR is the Vision Pro headset

Apple today has officially announced Vision Pro, its entry into the AR headset market. Users will “look through, not at” the content they want to engage with using Vision Pro, Apple CEO Tim Cook says.

The headset, which carries some familiar design elements of current Apple products, also looks unapologetically like a pair of snow goggles. It uses a single piece of laminated glass that “seamlessly blends into an aluminum frame.” Apple says it studied “thousands of heads” to ensure the headset provides the perfect comfort for just about any user. It also uses a modular design that allows for swapping of different parts.

For example, Apple worked with Zeiss to create vision correction inserts for users who wear glasses. These magnetically attach to the inside of the headset, making them easy to take in and out to accommodate multiple users for one headset.

Apple Vision Pro is both an AR and a VR headset

Apple is calling this an augmented reality headset, but don’t let that fool you. Vision Pro will be capable of doing full virtual reality with just a twist of the dial that sits on the side. That means you can easily use things like apps in augmented reality while watching movies or playing games in full VR. depending on what suits your needs or preferences best.

This works due to passthrough video that lets you see what’s in front of you. Meanwhile you can also see whatever content you’re engaging with. The headset is powered by VisionOS and will have access to a ton of the apps you already use on your iPhone. Such as the App Store, Apple Music, Safari and more. Even apps like Disney+ will be available day one according to Disney CEO Bob Iger, who debuted some Disney+ experiences for Vision Pro during the event.

Vision Pro launches later this year for $3,499. That’s a significantly higher price than other similar AR and VR hardware. But then again this is a first-generation product and Apple likely wants to limit who buys it right away.

According to Apple, Contact Posters will be a “brand-new way to express yourself.” With this new feature, you will be able to create a poster that will appear every time you call someone on the other person’s phone. You will be able to use a photo or a Memoji as a poster. Your poster will also be part of your contact card.

But the best thing is that you will be able to customize your poster just like you can personalize your lock screen right now. For example, you will be able to change the poster’s image, font, and color.

The new Mac Pro uses the M2 Ultra, so it’s similar to the Mac Studio, but really makes this even more powerful with six open PCIe Gen 4 slots. It also has two HDMI ports, and dual 10GB Ethernet ports available. A lot like the Mac Studio, it can also support up to six Pro Display XDRs.

Now, it’s important to keep in mind that the Mac Pro is not a consumer computer. This is going to be overkill for around 99% of us. This is for the professionals out there. That includes audio engineers, video creators, and more. And no, I don’t mean YouTubers. This computer is more for those that are working on Hollywood movies, like Fast X or Guardians of the Galaxy. For the rest of us, this computer is just insane overkill, and you can get an M2 Ultra for much less in the Mac Studio.

The new Mac Pro is starting at $6,999. That’s the same price as the Intel-based model announced in 2019. But this does also mean that the transition to Apple Silicon Macs is complete.
